JK Tyre Conferred with the ‘Best Practices Awards’ By United Nation Global Compact Network India


Indian tyre major JK Tyre & Industries Limited has been conferred with the prestigious Best Practices Awards on Sustainable Development Goals by United Nation Global Compact Network, India (UNGCNI).

The Company was awarded for its exemplary Corporate Social Responsibility initiative- enabling access to clean drinking water (SDG- 3), water conservation (SDG-6) and women empowerment (SDG-2) at Kankroli in Rajasthan.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Rajiv Prasad, President (India Operations), JK Tyre & Industries Ltd said, “Being a responsible Corporate, we are committed to give back to the community we operate in. We have been diligently working towards empowering the local communities and providing them with sustainable livelihood solutions. Kankroli is a special project and receiving such a prestigious recognition for our efforts has further motivated us to continue in this path towards development of the nation. Our aim is to become a water positive company and with this, we have taken a step forward in this pursuit of excellence.”

The Company successfully provided sustainable drinking water solutions to 13 hamlets (basti) comprising over 3000 people. Total 13 water tanks ranging from 5,000- 10,000 litres capacity have been constructed, wherein beneficiaries are themselves managing the whole operation and maintenance activities. Furthermore, nine water tanks have been desilted and 10 checkdams constructed under ‘Jal Swavlamban Abhiyan’ of Govt. of Rajasthan bringing a large acreage under irrigation and benefiting more than 4,000 people. A large number of animals are getting round the year availability of drinking water.

To promote women empowerment in the region, JK Tyre has formed 42 self-help groups comprising of over 700 women. The company has also implemented adult literacy and skill development programs on floriculture & tailoring to enable hundreds of women in the region to earn livelihood and support their families.

In Kankroli, JK Tyre has adopted ‘Zero discharge of wastewater’ policy i.e. 100 per cent utilization of water at the plant to prevent contamination of groundwater and reduce damage to the ecology.  JK Tyre has achieved the distinction of being one of the lowest water consuming companies in the country. The Company has established a new benchmark in water consumption by achieving the milestone of 2.83 Ltr/Kg of finished product, an outcome of systematic initiatives over the last five years.
