10 Successful Teams Get Smart Farm Grant Challenge (SFGC) - Grant


Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) distributed Rs. 5 Lakhs each to 10 shortlisted Teams under the Smart Farm Grant Challenge Programme. The grant distribution and the award ceremony were held at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, New Delhi, where Sh. Alkesh Kumar Sharma (Secretary, MeitY) handed over the cheques to the winning teams. The award ceremony was attended by Sh. Arvind Kumar (DG, STPI), Dr Saurabh Srivastava (Chairman Emeritus TiE Delhi-NCR and former Chairman NASSCOM), Sh. Roshan Lal Tamak (Executive Director, DCM Sriram) and senior officials from the Ministry and STPI.

The 10 shortlisted teams were A2P Energy Solution Private Limited, Ag Automate Private Limited, Aigret Innovations India Pvt. Ltd, ARMS  4 AI Pvt. Ltd, Bharat Rohan Airborne Innovations Private Limited, Plaksha University, G B Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Innosapien Agro Technologies Pvt Ltd, Satyukt Analytics Pvt Ltd and TFBOT PRIVATE LIMITED.

“Last-mile innovations focused on smallholder farmers are key for India's Agri & allied ecosystem and Agri #startups should develop their products keeping smallholder farmers in mind,” said Sh. Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary, MeitY.

“Agriculture is one of the key economic sectors of the country & #innovation through ICT enablement for this sector will help in achieving the target of $5 trillion economy by 2025,”mentioned Sh. Arvind Kumar, DG, STPI on the occasion.

“Increasing productivity of Agriculture is a critical requirement of our farmers. Iam delighted that MeitY has come up with the SFGC which focusses on their problem statement and invite Start-ups to find solution in an innovative way and financially support them,” accentuated Dr Saurabh Srivastava, Chairman, Emeritus, TiE Delhi-NCR (former Chairman NASSCOM).

“Optimum time of Sugarcane Harvest can be predicted using technologies like AI & ML etc,” said Sh. Roshan Lal Tamak, Executive Director &CEO, DCM Shriram.

The Smart Farm Grant Challenge (SFGC) programme was launched on 9th May 2022 by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) with grant-in-aid of Rs. 2.54 Cr. STPI is the designated implementation agency with Neuron CoE at Mohali as the anchor CoE. The challenge programme was launched to identify path-breaking solutions from startups, Innovators, Entrepreneurs etc. to address the problem statements identified for sugarcane harvest. Sugarcane is an important commodity for human consumption as well as trade. Information and communication technology in agriculture (ICT in agriculture) has the potential to significantly impact the agriculture sector by utilizing ICT tools.

The programme received an overwhelming response and received a total of 474 applications.  108 applications found suitable were further screened and 25 selected were pitched before the Jury committee of members from Industry, Academia, Domain experts and stakeholders.

The Jury’s recommendation of the 10 best proposals that have shown innovation and technological acumen to predict the optimum time of sugarcane harvest in a given plot area with reasonable accuracy are being provided financial support of INR 5 Lakhs each to develop a working prototype of the proposed solution within three months duration

These 10 teams will now have to develop a working prototype of the proposed solution within three months and compete again to enter the next critical phases of the Smart-farm Grant Challenge. As part of the next phases, they will demonstrate the prototype, get selected for Stage-2, receive Rs. 20 lakh support, develop the final product and compete again for the grand award of Rs 50 lakh along-with support of INR 10 lakhs per year for next 2 years towards Operations & Maintenance. Teams having innovative approaches, solutions which are reliable, having accuracy in percentage, correlation with the real time data etc. and can cater to scalability, usability, ease of deployment & roll-out, have a great chance to progress further.

Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations Released Vehicle Retail Data For August’22


On YoY basis, total vehicle retail for the month of August’22 saw a growth of 8%.

Except tractors which decreased by -32%, all the other categories were in green. 2W, 3W, PV and CV were up by 8.5%, 83%, 6.5% and 24% respectively.

When compared with August’19, a pre-covid month, total vehicle retails continued to fall by -7%. While PV showed a double-digit healthy growth of 41%, growth in CV also turned positive by 6%. All the other categories were in red with 2W, 3W and Tractors falling by -16%, -1% and -7% respectively.

Good monsoon fails to ignite festive spirits thus impacting Ganpati festive demand.

As semi-conductor supply continues to ease, Auto Retail and PV segment especially, geared up to have the best festive season in a decade.

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) released Vehicle Retail Data for August’22.

Commenting on how August’22 performed, FADA President, Mr. Manish Raj Singhania said, “Auto Retail for the month of August’22 saw an overall growth of 8%. August opens the door for festival season to kick in. While Dealers anticipated good Ganesh Chaturthi in August, the results thus far has not been encouraging. In spite of good monsoons, festive season began with a dampener during Ganpati.

When compared with August’19, a pre-covid month, total vehicle retails fell by -7%. While PV outperformed handsomely by growing 41%, CV also turned positive by growing 6% and thus came out of the covid blues. All the other segments were in red with 2W, 3W and Tractors falling by -16%, -1% and -7% respectively.

While the 2W segment has grown by 8.5% YoY, it continues to face covid blues due to underperformance of Bharat and is still not above 2019 levels. This coupled with price hikes has made the 2W product out of reach for most entry level customers. With erratic monsoon, the crop realisation has been low and flood like situation has restricted customer movement.

The 3W space continues its healthy double digit growth (grows 83% YoY) when compared YoY. It has now also equalled 2019 sales for the first time. Electrification is also the highest in this category as e-Rickshaw leading the way. There is a clear indication that customers are now preferring electric vehicles over ICE vehicles as ICE 3W continues to see double digit de-growth when compared to pre-covid levels.

The CV segment continues to witness an upswing in economic activities post monsoon and saw a growth of 24% YoY. This along with government’s infrastructure push, new launches by OEMs and better conversion in fleet operations has kept the segment in green. Apart from this, the Passenger Carrier segment is also showing good demand due to increased buying from Educational Institutions.

The PV segment continues to be on a bull run (grows 6.5% YoY) as demand for all sub categories of vehicles except entry level remained strong. This is also aided by new feature rich launches which OEMs are doing since last few months. With semi-conductor shortage slowly becoming a passe, vehicle availability has definitely improved but waiting period continues to remain due to high demand in higher feature rich variants.”

Near Term Outlook

While the month of September brings with itself Onam and Navratri, it also brings the 15-days period of Shraadh, generally considered as an inauspicious period for buying vehicles. With easing of supply, PV segment will definitely see the best ever festivities (Navratri and Diwali) in last 1 decade. Along with this, if vehicle prices continue to remain stable and there is no more health related threats, we may see an uptick in the much awaited 2W space which has not shown the required growth since last festivals.

With Government’s continuous push in infrastructure spending, we will also see an uptick in CV space.

Overall, FADA changes its stance from ‘cautiously optimistic’ to ‘optimistic’ as it enters the festive period.

Union Bank of India has launched 705 new “Union Gold Loan Points”to further strengthen the Gold Loan business and customer service enrichment. Union Bank of India, now has 1221 Union Gold Loan Points across the country.

Manimekhalai stressed the need to explore the untapped Gold Loan business opportunity as it is secured and hassle-free mode of lending with minimum time engaged. Union Bank of India had announced the formation of New Gold Loan Vertical as a part of new initiative in the quarter of June 2022. This vertical has been conceptualized with a view to tap the market share under gold loan portfolio. 

The Bank had also launched their first specialized and dedicated branches “UNION GOLD LOAN POINT (UGLP)” in the year 2020. It was launched to focus on business growth in selected potential branches across the country and has 516 exclusively designed Union Gold Loan Point branches which are equipped to extend specialized Gold Loan services to the customers.

The layout of the warehouse is designed with a height of 46 ft at the center efficiently utilizing the space. The side walls of the warehouse are smart insulated with ventilation for the flow of natural light & air. The warehouse is inserted with a central roof monitoring system to keep the internal temperature and to have air chances. The facility has expansive peripheral access on all four sides for fire tendering and another vehicle movement. The facility holds space of 26ft and 20ft wide canopy throughout on both sides for all weather-smooth operations. The facility has a seamless and automated dock-to-rack movement with an articulated forklift, battery-operated forklift, battery-operated pallet truck, and a hydraulic pallet truck.    

To avoid pollution by spillage of disposal from the warehouse, there is a separate containment pit with a dedicated tank of 4 Lakh litres to manage storage and spilling of disposals. The warehouse has instilled a sewage treatment plant to make it fit for safe disposal, agricultural use, or domestic use in toilets. It has a different pump room designed to utilize the natural pressure and provide a water supply with the backup motor. It has a system that provides a curtain of water for protection against internal and external “exposure” to fire, and protection of large openings. Considering the storage of chemical products, the entire periphery of the site is equipped with the Drencher. The store is infused with VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection Apparatus) system for the best possible safety standards.

IIITB Hosts Automotive Workshop For Over 50 Participants


Automotive software has currently reached astounding levels of complexity prompting automotive OEMs and their suppliers to manage a complex supply chain of semiconductors, electronics, software and systems. Entering this space and ushering in digital transformation of the automotive industry is SIG Automotive, a special interest group in IIIT Bangalore that focuses on issues of software engineering, e-mobility and sustainability in automobiles of tomorrow. The research initiated by the Group focuses on creating processes, operations, tools to develop safe cyber secure adaptive automotive grade software-intensive systems.

Given that sustainability is a key factor in any system and more so in software solutions, SIG Automotive hosted a workshop on Automotive Software and Sustainability, bringing together leading players from academia and industry on a platform to exchange ideas and thoughts on the above topics. The workshop, hosted at International Institute of Information Technology (IIITB), focused on software, E/E, e-mobility and sustainability, with presentations and panel discussions on a range of topics veering around software and sustainability. This workshop was co-convened by Prof. Roland Erik Haas and Prof. Sujit Kumar Chakrabarti, who are leading SIG Automotive at IIITB.

The workshop also included breakout sessions on education, technology transfer, the trends and challenges involved. With over 50 participants, the free workshop had leading industry presence starting from Daimler, Ashok Leyland and MathWorks. The conference was sponsored by Infineon Technologies, a world leader in semiconductors.

Emerging SaaS Firm Kovai.co Appoints Andrew Cloke As New COO

Having graduated from Westminister University in 1989 with a degree in Urban Estate Management, Cloke started his career as a Chartered Surveyor in Real Estate. In 1996, he joined British Telecommunications (BT plc) for commercial contract support. In the latter three years, he managed a global outsourcing contract based in Belgium, after which he travelled throughout Central and Eastern Europe and Brazil meeting BT staff and their customers until 2007.

In 2008, he joined Fidelity International, where he met the Founder and CEO of Kovai.co, Saravana Kumar, who was also working with Fidelity Investments then. Though Cloke was in the IT department, most of his work was with Finance (budgeting, forecasting, cost control) Tax (R&D Tax Credit Claims, Transfer Pricing, VAT, Corporate Tax compliance) and Commercial (para legal, commercial disputes, procurement, and supplier management).

Covishield Vaccine Is Not Detrimental To Male Fertility Potential


* For the first time, in a pilot study, a team of Indian fertility experts at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, looked into changes in sperm quality in men who received CovishieldTM vaccines.

* Research was published on 5th September 2022 in the official journal of UK-based Society for Reproduction and Fertility.

* Semen quality such as sperm number, motility characteristics, and structure (morphology) which are required to establish a successful pregnancy in partners were not impacted by Covishield vaccine.

* None of the subjects who received the vaccines developed abnormalities such as azoospermia (complete absence of sperm), asthenozoospermia (lack of motility) or teratozoospermia (structural defects).

A team of Indian fertility researchers at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal who looked into changes in sperm quality in vaccinated individuals found that their fertility was unaffected.  

Concern about fertility impairment after vaccination is one of the reasons for vaccine hesitancy in the population. Some men have delayed taking the COVID vaccine thinking that it would have a negative impact on their fertility and the quality of their sperm.

The research team managed to recruit 53 men who provided semen samples prior to receiving the first dose of their vaccine, after observing 2 to 7 days of abstinence. After about two months of vaccination, sperm quality was again assessed. Those who had tested positive for COVID-19 or had symptoms of the same were not included in the study. The study was reported in the official journal of UK-based Society for Reproduction and Fertility.

Of the 53 subjects who received two doses of vaccine, about half of them had semen quality below the WHO recommended value prior to vaccination which did not alter significantly post-vaccination. No significant changes in the semen characteristics were observed between baseline and follow-up samples in men who received two doses of the vaccine.

Speaking about the study Lt. Gen. (Dr) M.D Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education said “This is a significant step forward towards reassuring the safety of COVID vaccines which is commonly used in India. It will help in dispelling any myths associated and remove any apprehensions men may have regarding the vaccine safety”

Professor Sharath Rao, the Dean of Kasturba Medical College echoed the sentiments saying “It is obviously a wise option to get vaccinated than suffer from the complications of a COVID-19 infection. A study like this can help in reassuring people and remove any doubts they may have on whether to get vaccinated’’

“Our initial observation has demonstrated that Covishield is not detrimental to sperm fertility potential. Importantly, no true semen abnormalities such as azoospermia (complete lack of sperm), absolute asthenozoospermia (loss of motility), and teratozoospermia (altered sperm structure) were found even in a single study subject who received the vaccine’’ said Professor Satish Adiga, who lead the team that included Huidrom Yaiphaba Meitei, Shubhashree Uppangala, Vani Lakshmi and Guruprasad Kalthur. 

“Myths and unproven reports on potentially damaging effects of Covid vaccinations on male fertility have spread globally and generated fears and hesitance to accept vaccinations. It is of utmost importance that valid clinical studies are available to generate evidence-based data on site effects of the vaccines. This study is the first to report clinical outcomes on sperm parameters in men before and after receiving Covishield vaccine. The results highlight no negative effect and no reason for concern. The study presents a milestone to disprove that vaccinations have negative impact on male fertility” said Professor Stefan Schlatt, a member of WHO team which formulated the guidelines for semen analysis and the Director of the Centre of Reproductive Medicine and Andrology in Germany.

“This study provides prima facie evidence that vaccines against COVID19 do not adversely affect the semen quality. The study is really important, especially in the Indian context and also in terms of generating much-needed evidence to demonstrate that non-mRNA-based vaccines are also safe as these vaccines don’t adversely affect the reproductive potential of men.  This evidence should dispel any fears among those men who are still hesitant to get vaccinated” said Dr Geetanjali Sachdeva, Director of NIRRCH, which is the top organization for research in reproductive and child health of Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR).

SAP And CleaVision Use Machine Learning To Reduce The Risk of Preventable Blindness In Premature Babies


SAP and CleaVision have today announced an innovative new program aimed at reducing the risk of preventable blindness as a result of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in pre-term babies. Using the power of machine learning and data analytics, the CleaVision solution helps time-pressed doctors to arrive at a more accurate diagnosis while focusing on what’s most important – treating at risk babies. Developed in India, the program is being piloted at Narayana Nethralaya Eye Institute in Bengaluru. It’s estimated that the screening program can be scaled up to further outreach and low-resource settings, minimizing time to diagnosis and maximizing the potential for treatment.

One-fifth of the world’s 15 million pre-term babies are born in India. It is estimated that, of the 3.5 million live births annually, over 200,000 infants are likely to suffer from the advanced stage of ROP, where abnormal growth of blood vessels inside the baby’s eyes can cause bleeding, scarring, and retinal detachment. Failure of timely intervention and treatment can lead to irreversible blindness.

“Early diagnosis is essential as most babies will recover completely if they get timely treatment for ROP,” said Chirag Gupta and Narayan V K, co-founders of CleaVision. “With India having the highest number of pre-mature pregnancies and the fact that there are relatively few qualified ROP practitioners, the more we can digitize and automate pre-screening, the more time those practitioners can spend on actual treatment.”

The CleaVision solution integrates image data processing with SAP Business Technology Platform, SAP AI Platform, and SAP Analytics Cloud to automate the identification of retina and blood vessel features and to make a recommendation on plus disease – a severe manifestation of ROP in premature babies. The screening data is then served to hospitals and can be reviewed by qualified medical professionals in the KIDROP (Karnataka Internet Assisted Diagnosis of ROP) telemedicine network.

“The diagnosis of plus disease is germane to ROP treatment decisions,” said Dr Anand Vinekar, Head, Pediatric Retina Department at Narayana Nethralaya Eye Institute. “The CleaVision deep learning automatic ROP Plus disease detection app has shown the ability to differentiate between plus and no plus disease, which is very likely to aid technicians and ROP specialists in arriving at a more accurate triaging diagnosis. That, in turn would help treat these babies on time, giving a better outcome which prevents blindness from ROP. We are piloting the software through the KIDROP program, which performs up to 2,500 imaging sessions each month from 135 neonatal units across Karnataka.”
