TKM Expands Flagship ABCD Program In Ramanagara District To Enhance Sanitation And Hygiene Education In Government Schools


In a renewed commitment to fostering sanitation and hygiene education in schools, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today proudly announced the expansion of its flagship ABCD (A Behavioural Change Demonstration) program in Ramanagara district. Originally launched in 2015, the ABCD program made a substantial impact by reaching over 58,000 students and 400,000 community members by 2019. Post-pandemic, the program was revitalized in August 2023 to continue its mission of fostering better hygiene practices.

As the world’s most populous country, India is making remarkable strides in improving sanitation facilities, with government initiatives like the "Swachh Bharat Abhiyan" playing a pivotal role. In support of this national mission, TKM's ABCD Program has been a driving force in promoting hygiene education, positively impacting over 1,004 government schools in the Ramanagara District since its inception.

In the fiscal year 2023-24, TKM successfully reintroduced the ABCD refresher program in 250 government schools, positively impacting an additional 12,000 students. As a result, students' knowledge of sanitation improved significantly, from 26.8% to 96.5%. The program also developed classroom champions to sustain proper sanitation practices and train new students. Furthermore, washroom repairs—such as tap replacements and deep cleaning—were completed, ensuring the facilities remained fully functional. Building on this success,the program aims to expand further in FY 2024-25, with plans to reach 550 more schools and benefit over 28,000 students.

Recognizing the program's transformative effect on society, it has been featured in the Harvard Business Review and is included in the prestigious collection of case studies at Harvard Business School. Beyond being a noteworthy accomplishment in empowering students and fostering behavioural shifts toward better hygiene and sanitation, the ABCD Program has nurtured young ambassadors who advocate for these practices within their schools and communities.

This significant expansion is designed to deepen the impact of the ABCD program by implementing several key activities. Headmasters and headmistresses from participating schools will undergo specialized orientation programs, focusing on the importance of sanitation and hygiene, ensuring that school leaders are well-equipped to foster a culture of cleanliness. Additionally, students will receive comprehensive training, which includes both practical and theoretical aspects of sanitation and hygiene, Water management, Waste segregation and safe disposal etc., helping them acquire essential life skills that contribute to their overall well-being.

The initiative also aims to empower School Cabinets and School Development and Monitoring Committees (SDMCs), encouraging them to take an active role in sustaining and monitoring hygiene practices within their schools. To facilitate the smooth implementation of these activities, TKM will provide the necessary consumables to the participating schools. Furthermore, regular school-level knowledge assessments will be conducted to evaluate the program’s effectiveness and measure improvements in students' understanding and practices related to hygiene and sanitation.

Attendees were also able to network with leading cardiologists, familiarise themselves with the latest advances, and receive CPR training. The day concluded with a stand-up performance.

Shri Dinesh Gundu Rao, Honourable Minister For Health & Family Welfare, Govt Of Karnataka, spoke on the need for preventive care and the government’s initiatives in screening people for early detection. The minister said, “Under the ‘Puneet Rajkumar Hrudaya Jyoti’ scheme, we’ve connected 82 hospitals with a centre in Bangalore. People who come in complaining of issues in the chest get ECGs done, each of which is connected to the Bangalore centre. AI reads the ECG and points out discrepancies, which are referred to a doctor. We’ve been able to save about 75 people through this intervention, helping to get them emergency care on time. With the usage of technology, we’re trying to address problems by preventing and detecting them in advance.”

Dr Vivek spoke on the dangers of smoking on the heart, saying, “Smoking one puff or two–three full packs is the same. It absolutely accelerates the heart rate and the speed of heart diseases. It will reduce the good cholesterol, increase the bad cholesterol and triglycerides, increase BP by vasoconstriction, and ensure your response to hypertension medication is blunted. You’re either a smoker or a non-smoker—there is no in-between.”

A panel discussion, ‘Diet for the Heart’, featured Dr Ranjan Shetty, HOD & consultant - interventional cardiology, Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, Dr Deepak Krishnamurthy, HOD - interventional cardiology, Kauvery Hospital, Bengaluru, and Dr Manjunath N K, vice chancellor, Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (S-VYASA) Bengaluru. The session focussed on diet practices that can help protect the heart from disease and stress.

Another panel discussion titled Her Heart Matters involved Dr Alben Sigamani, founding partner and chief scientific officer of Numen Health, Dr K S Ravindranath, director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research (SJICR), and Dr Anupama V Hegde, a cardiologist at Ramaiah Memorial hospital, Bengaluru. CPR can be a critical intervention when the heart stops beating or is unable to circulate blood to vital organs. It can also be crucial in other life-threatening situations, such as heart attacks or near-drowning incidents.

However, despite its potential to save lives, less than 2% of India’s population is aware of CPR, which can make the difference between life and death. This significant gap in awareness prompted HDFC Life to launch the campaign ‘The Missing Beat’, coinciding with the World Heart Day.

At the core of this campaign is a moving short film that traces the emotional journeys of four individuals, showcasing their dreams, relationships, and vulnerabilities. Each story emphasises the critical importance of being prepared in moments that matter, demonstrating the lifesaving potential of CPR in cardiac emergencies. Through this film, HDFC Life aims to connect with audiences on a personal level, underscoring the message that being CPR-ready can enable one to save lives.

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh has once again made its mark on the national tourism stage. The Central Ministry of Tourism has announced that the state's Pranpur, Sabarvani, and Ladpura Khas have been declared the best tourism villages in the country. Pranpur has been selected in the craft category, while Sabarvani and Ladpura Khas have been recognized for responsible tourism. These villages were honoured at a ceremony in New Delhi on September 27th, which coincides with World Tourism Day. The Additional Managing Director Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board Ms Bidisha Mukherjee received this honour along with rural representatives. The Union Ministry of Tourism organizes the Best Tourism Village Competition with the aim of promoting community-based values and lifestyle while preserving cultural and natural resources.

COMMANDING THE URBAN SPACE

Since the first client deliveries, Cullinan fulfilled its purpose as a supremely accomplished off-road motor car, capable of taking its owner into locations never previously explored in a Rolls-Royce. However, versatility and the effortless everywhere essence of the model also made Cullinan a ‘daily driver’ for many owners; indeed, numerous clients have told Rolls-Royce that no other SUV offers the same effortless performance as Cullinan’s 6.75-litre V12 engine, from what is often a substantial and diverse collection. These were all significant considerations in conceiving Cullinan Series II.

It was noted by the marque’s intelligence specialists that an increasing number of Rolls-Royce clients were concentrated in urban areas – from great world metropolises to fast-growth cities in emerging regions. To that end, Cullinan increasingly serves as a super-luxury product in which clients wish to be seen and project their character – albeit with the capacity to vanish into nature at will. Specialists also observed a shift towards owners driving their motor cars themselves. When Cullinan was first launched, less than 70% were self-driven: today, almost every Cullinan is driven by its owner, with less than 10% of clients retaining the services of a chauffeur. Together with the rejuvenation of the brand and the ever-increasing Bespoke offering, Cullinan contributed to a fall in the average age of Rolls-Royce clients from 56 in 2010 to just 43 today.

An increasingly urban focus, a youthful cadre of clients and a decisive shift towards self-driving informs the surface treatment and detail of Cullinan Series II’s exterior. A key theme is verticality, which echoes illuminated skyscrapers in the megacities where Cullinan is increasingly at home. This is most apparent in the new lamp treatment, where tall daytime running light graphics ensure Cullinan Series II is easily identified, day and night.

Reflecting many clients’ desires for bolder forms of self-expression, innovative decoration and detail have been added throughout the interior of Cullinan Series II. The most substantive change to the motor car’s geometry is the pillar-to-pillar glass-panel fascia in the upper portion of the dashboard – an elegant and versatile design element that stages both digital and physical craftsmanship.

Connectivity has been refined throughout the motor car, especially for those in the rear of Cullinan Series II. Clients are able to connect up to two streaming devices to the rear screens, which now incorporate a Bespoke interface for streaming car management and seating functions such as massage, heating and cooling.

The installation of internet connectivity allows clients to enjoy a Wi-Fi hot spot connection and independent streaming for each screen. For the first time in Cullinan, Bluetooth headphones of any type can be paired with the rear seat infotainment system, or clients can enjoy the marque’s exceptional 18-speaker Bespoke Audio system, which benefits from the latest generation 18-channel 1400-watt amplifier. Cullinan Series II retains the brand’s celebrated speaker architecture wherein cavities within the motor car’s aluminium sill sections are used as resonance chambers for low frequency speakers, effectively transforming the entire motor car into a subwoofer.

Directly in front of the passenger is an Illuminated Fascia panel — a remarkable expression of modern craft that debuted with Ghost before appearing in Spectre and now, for the first time, is available within the Cullinan family. In this guise, it features an illuminated Cullinan wordmark and a unique Cityscape graphic inspired by the skyscrapers of the world’s megacities at night. This is created using a specially-developed technique whereby 7,000 dots are laser-etched onto the rear of the darkened and toughened security glass, each at minutely differing angles and dimensions to create the perception of depth. In addition to this prêt-à-porter design, clients are also able to create their own Illuminated Fascia motif in collaboration with the marque’s Bespoke designers.

Incorporating the Spirit of Ecstasy into the interior of the motor car was the product of four years of development, and a unique partnership between analogue and digital craftspeople to create a dramatic and meticulously orchestrated flow of light. This sequence begins with the illumination of the driver’s display upon entering the motor car, followed by the Central Information Display, then the Illuminated Fascia, where light sweeps inwards towards the vitrine, lighting the timepiece. The Spirit of Ecstasy is illuminated from below initially, reminiscent of a spotlight on a debut performance, before her stage lighting settles to a soft glow.

Information Technology: Accenture Q4FY24: In-Line Performance; Guides 3-6% Growth In FY25


In-line performance: Accenture (ACN) reported revenue of USD16.4bn, up 2.6% YoY (5% LC) in Q4. Revenue growth was above the mid-point of the company̢۪s guidance of 2-6% in LC. For FY24, revenue grew 1.2% YoY to USD64.9bn (2% LC) and was at the mid-point of the guided range of 1.5-2.5% growth in LC. Seven of the 13 industries, including public service, industrial, software and platforms, health, high-tech, energy, and life sciences, grew in a mid-single digit or higher in Q4. Consulting revenue grew 0.7% YoY to USD8.3bn (3% LC), whereas revenue from Managed Services/Outsourcing grew 4.6% YoY to USD8.2bn (7% LC). Organic revenue improved, showing a slightly positive growth in Q4. ACN posted fairly strong double-digit growth in Security, double-digit growth in Industry X, and high single-digit growth in Cloud and Song, during Q4. Strategy and Consulting, and Technology reported mid-single-digit growth, while Operations grew in a low single-digit in Q4. New bookings stood at USD20.1bn (21.1% YoY; book-to-bill: 1.2x). Consulting bookings stood at USD8.6bn (up 1.2% YoY; book-to-bill: 1x), and Managed Services bookings stood at USD11.6bn (up 41.5% YoY; book-to-bill: 1.4x). The company reported USD1bn worth of new bookings in Gen AI in Q4 (total USD3bn in FY24 vs. USD300mn YoY) and achieved USD900mn in revenue in FY24 (vs USD100mn in FY23). Adj OPM increased by 10bps YoY to 15% in Q4. Quarterly annualized voluntary attrition stood at 14% in Q4, similar to the QoQ/YoY attrition. Total headcount increased by 24,103 QoQ to 774,303 (3.2% QoQ/5.7% YoY).

Weakness in Financial Services persists: Q4 revenue growth was led by Health and Public Services (11% in LC YoY), Products (6%), CMT (5%), and Resources (3%), whereas Financial Services declined 2% YoY LC. Geography-wise, North America grew 6% YoY in LC, driven by growth in Public Services and Industrial; EMEA grew 2% on the back of growth in Public Services and Life sciences, partially offset by decline in Banking and Capital Markets; and Growth markets grew 9% led by growth in Banking and Capital Market, Software and platforms, and Industrials.   

Guides to 3-6% LC revenue growth in FY25: ACN has guided to LC revenue growth of 3-6% in FY25 (includes inorganic contribution of slightly more than 3%). The guidance assumes positive 1.5% forex impact on reported USD revenue. It expects GAAP operating margin to expand by 80-110bps to 15.6-15.8%. Adjusted operating margin, which excludes USD438mn of business optimization costs in FY24, is expected to expand by 10-30bps to 15.6-15.8%. It expects Q1FY25 revenue at USD16.85-17.45bn (2-6% LC range), assuming a positive 1.5% forex impact. The company expects OCF and FCF at USD9.4-10.1bn and USD8.8-9.5bn, respectively, in FY25.

Earnings Call KTAs: i) Management highlighted that the demand environment has not seen much change, and remains cautious. ACN is well positioned to capitalize on growth opportunities when market conditions improve. ii) Consulting and Managed Services are expected to grow in a low-to-mid single-digit in FY25. iii) Management highlighted that organic revenue saw an improvement in Q4 with slightly positive growth, and the trend is expected to continue in FY25. Management indicated that the top end of the guidance assumes more of the same discretionary spending environment, while the lower-end assumes further deterioration in discretionary spending over what is observed in FY24. iv) With USD1bn in new Gen AI bookings in Q4, the company has closed USD3bn bookings in FY24 and achieved USD900mn in revenue in FY24. Bookings and revenue from Gen AI are expected to register healthy growth, as clients execute large implementations. v) It has invested USD6.6bn on 46 acquisitions in FY24. It is investing into capital projects (USD440bn TAM, growing at 5%), Health (USD70bn TAM, growing at 6%), and Europe public services (USD46bn TAM, growing at 5% annually) through M&As for the next wave of growth. It plans to invest USD3bn on M&As in FY25. vi) ACN has ~57,000 skilled data and AI practitioners as against its goal of doubling its data and AI workforce, from 40,000 to 80,000 by the end of FY26. vii) It has 33/125 clients with quarterly bookings greater than USD100mn in Q4FY24/FY24, respectively.

Fortis Bannerghatta Road Performs Complex Bilateral Hip Replacement Surgery On 38-Year-Old Visually Impaired Man


-         The patient suffered from multiple co-morbidities - Diabetes, Visual Impairment, Renal Failure and was awaiting a potential kidney transplant-

Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road successfully treated a 38-Year-Old visually impaired man who had sustained severe injuries, including multiple complex fractures in both hips and his shoulder, following a fall from chair while at his shop. The team of doctors’ led by Dr Mohan K. Puttaswamy, Senior Consultant Orthopaedics, Fortis Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru performed an intricate bilateral hip replacement surgery, and the patient was discharged in stable condition after a 12-day hospital stay.

The patient, Rakesh (name changed), was visually impaired and facing challenges in performing daily tasks, suffered additional complications following the accident. The fall resulted in bilateral hip fractures and a shoulder fracture, leaving him completely immobile. Initially admitted to a local hospital after the accident, he was transferred overnight to Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road for advanced treatment.

Thorough medical evaluation indicated that he had sustained severe injuries to his both hip joints and a fracture in his left shoulder. Given the patient’s multiple co-morbidities, including diabetes, renal failure, and visual impairment, a multidisciplinary team of doctors—including anaesthetists, intensivists, nephrologists, and orthopaedic surgeon—decided to proceed with a staged bilateral hip replacement surgery. The goal was to restore mobility, alleviate pain, and ensure a quicker recovery through meticulous management of his injuries.

Giving details of the surgery, Dr Mohan K Puttaswamy, Senior Consultant-Orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, Bengaluru said, “This case was highly complex owing to the multiple co-morbidities suffered by the patient. These factors significantly increased the surgical risks. The patient presented with fractures in both hips and the left shoulder, necessitating a carefully planned approach. To address the bilateral hip fractures, we opted for a staged bilateral hip replacement due to the complexity and inherent risks of performing both replacements simultaneously.”

“We first replaced one hip, allowing the patient to stabilize and regain some mobility. A week later, we performed the second hip replacement. This phased approach was critical to minimizing surgical stress and ensuring the patient’s stability throughout the process. After successfully addressing the hip fractures, we then treated the shoulder fracture. Given the patient’s renal failure, we employed a conservative blood management strategy during the surgeries to reduce transfusion needs and minimize strain on the kidneys, which was essential considering his potential need for a kidney transplant in the future.” Dr Puttaswamy added

IMS Rollout Could Curtail Festive Sales Opportunity For Retailers: Empower India


* Seeks 12 months extension before implementation to account for the upcoming festive season

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has proposed to launch the Invoice Management System (IMS) with effect from October 1, 2024. While the objective of IMS is to streamline the input tax credit (ITC) claim process, but lack of preparation will not only increase the compliance burden but also impede the efficient deployment of capital. Under the new system, the recipient taxpayer will be required to accept or reject every invoice or credit note or keep as pending instead of the current system where businesses can simply claim ITC on their own. Post its rollout, theoretically, IMS will allow registered recipients to match their records with invoices issued by suppliers in their GSTR-1 however, lack of legal backing for the IMS proposal is a major concern, as taxpayers are currently doing self-assessment and claiming ITC in their GST returns.

K. Giri, Director General, Empower India said, “It is prudent to defer the introduction of IMS as it could impact the retail ecosystem during the festive season when they conclude 30-35% of their yearly sales. Also, for the retail ecosystem, a new guideline to be followed in middle of a busy sales period is an unwarranted distraction. The lack of a functional supplier dashboard, which would provide visibility on recipient actions, further complicates the implementation.”

Areas of improvement:

Stakeholders have identified the need for improvements in the IMS, such as the inclusion of GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B filing status for suppliers, as well as the ability to validate data at the invoice level rather than the rate level.

The treatment of credit notes when rejected by customers is a major concern as it would add up to the tax liability of the supplier.

Consultation with small businesses and with the last retailer is critical for success of such an initiative which is all pervasive.

Allowing credit notes to be kept pending, providing sufficient time for alignment before automatic addition of tax liability, and enabling suppliers to issue debit notes to offset rejected credit notes are some of the recommendations from taxpayers.

The current proposal lacks clear mechanism for suppliers to dispute any incorrect or mischievous rejection of credit notes by their customers.

As the government continues to refine the IMS, it is crucial that policymakers engage closely with businesses to address these pressing concerns and ensure a smooth transition to the new compliance regime. The companies are already handling a major GST change by way of Input Service distribution becoming mandatory from the next financial year, and this unannounced change further complicates the compliance process. A collaborative approach between the government and the business community is essential to address the complexities of the new Invoice Management System. Business should be allowed at least 12 months to prepare for the implementation of IMS.

Marking the World Environment Health Day, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability. Over the years, TKM has consciously adopted sustainable business practices and transforming from a carmaker to a mobility company. Keeping with its principle of ‘Respect for the Planet’, Toyota globally announced the ‘Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050’ (TEC 2050) in October 2015, comprising six environmental challenges. The first set of 3 challenges focuses on achieving carbon neutrality from our products, and its entire value chain including the manufacturing activities. The latter 3 challenges aim to create a net positive impact.

Aligning with the TEC 2050, TKM’s multi-faceted strategy continues to deliver innovative solutions that go beyond product and service offerings, with significant achievements in the areas of nature conservation (e.g. afforestation, cultivating native biodiversity, etc.), resource efficiency (water, materials and energy management), and advancing recycling & reuse initiatives and more. Through these, 89.3% of the water requirement for production is met through recycled and rainwater. The company has also witnessed a remarkable rise in groundwater level over the years, as a result of rainwater harvesting and 18 recharge pits across the campus, which is now at 27 feet, an average of pre-monsoon and post-monsoon season (from 90ft in 2009).

Waste to Value (Recycling): By rigorously implementing “segregation of waste at source and responsibly handling”, TKM is promoting a recycling-based society. With the goal of becoming a ‘zero waste to landfill’ company, over 96% of the waste is recycled.

Efficient Energy Usage & Adoption of Renewable Energy: TKM has made continuous improvements in energy efficiency by installing renewable energy and implementing energy-saving technologies. TKM has been using 100% renewable energy in grid electricity since June 2021. This transition has resulted in 95,082 tons of CO2 reduction in FY 23-24. By April 2023, the company had fully implemented 100% PNG usage across its operations. This initiative has resulted in a 33% reduction in CO2 emissions per vehicle, contributing to an overall reduction of 2,051 tons of CO2. Technologies like heat pump with solar reflector, dry booth implementation, etc. and optimized manufacturing processes led to 5000+ tons of reduction in carbon emissions in the same period.

Nature conservation and enriching biodiversity: As stewards of the environment, the company has taken significant steps towards nature conservation. Over the years, TKM has planted over 328,000 trees across 112 acres within its factory premises using the Miyawaki/native concept. This focuses towards restoring and reconstructing the forests based on the concept of “Potential Natural Vegetation”, and this very application has helped in creating a ‘Natural Forest’, within the premises of TKM, by planting native species to enhance biodiversity and aid food chain and ecology. In addition, TKM has created widespread awareness and promotes greenery in the community through its employee engagement by distributing saplings and conducting plantation drives (this year, 8000+ saplings were distributed and planted outside TKM premises).

To further amplify the efforts in restoring the native biodiversity, TKM has established a state-of-the-art ‘Ecozone’, an experiential learning centre with 17 theme parks located at TKM’s manufacturing, which continues to contribute through knowledge-sharing, enabling eco consciousness, on various aspects of nature conservation including climate change, waste-to-value, ecological balance, water resource management and so forth.
