Scaling India’s Renewables Beyond 1,500 GW Will Face Considerable Land, Water, Population, And Climate Challenges: CEEW

-India’s unconstrained RE potential exceeds 24,000 GW, but not all of it is achievable

-Odisha and Madhya Pradesh emerge as new states that can bolster India’s RE ambitions

-Green hydrogen production could reach 40 MTPA by 2050, but water management is critical

India has a renewable energy (RE) potential of over 24,000 GW, but even reaching the ~7,000 GW required to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 will require a holistic approach to addressing challenges such as land access, climate risks, land conflicts, and population density, according to a new independent study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW). India currently has an installed RE capacity of 150 GW, and up to 1,500 GW, the constraints are relatively manageable.

The study, ‘Unlocking India’s RE and Green Hydrogen Potential: An Assessment of Land, Water, and Climate Nexus’, highlights that deployment beyond 1,500 GW could face critical challenges as multiple constraints intensify, narrowing the runway to reach the net-zero target. Renewable energy, including solar, wind, and green hydrogen, is crucial to realise India’s climate goals, but scaling up these technologies will require strategic land use, improved water management, and resilient power grid infrastructure.

The CEEW study is the first-of-its-kind to map India’s RE and green hydrogen potential by analysing the entire country’s landmass and applying real-world constraints. It does this by using detailed 5x5 km grid cells, which offer a more practical assessment of what can actually be developed and where. The CEEW study finds that population density significantly limits the realisation of India’s RE potential, with only 29 per cent of onshore wind potential and 27 per cent of solar potential located in areas with a population density lower than 250 people/km2. Land conflicts further restrict deployment, with only about 35 per cent of onshore wind potential and 41 per cent of solar potential located in areas free from historical land conflicts. However, earthquakes are less of a concern, as 83 per cent of onshore wind and 77 per cent of solar potential are located in low to moderate seismic zones.

The CEEW study also identifies states with high unconstrained RE potential such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Ladakh. Rajasthan (6,464 GW), Madhya Pradesh (2,978 GW), Maharashtra (2,409 GW) and Ladakh (625 GW) have significant low-cost solar potential, while Karnataka (293 GW), Gujarat (212 GW), and Maharashtra (184 GW) offer considerable wind potential.

Dr Arunabha Ghosh, CEO, CEEW, said, “India stands at a pivotal juncture in its energy transition. It has set out to do the near impossible: provide energy access to millions of people, clean up one of the world’s largest energy systems, and become a green industrial powerhouse. While our RE potential is vast, the road to net zero is fraught with challenges. From land conflicts and population density to the unpredictable but undeniable impact of climate change, every step forward will demand resilience and innovation. The CEEW study, for the first time, goes into granular details of the county’s landmass to map out where we can build out renewable energy and green hydrogen projects while addressing the challenges of land, people, and compounding, non-linear climate risks. The scale of the task ahead is monumental, yet it is precisely this challenge that will define India’s legacy as a trailblazer for the Global South—a country that charts a low-carbon pathway to prosperity against all odds.”

Notably, the CEEW study highlighted that Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, with high RE potential backed by land banks and infrastructure to evacuate renewable power and manage seasonality, could emerge as key players in meeting India’s renewable energy ambitions in the coming decades. Further, a considerable portion of India’s RE potential is in high-climate-risk and high-land-price areas—only 18 per cent of onshore wind potential and 22 per cent of solar potential are located in areas with low climate risks and low land prices, when looked at in isolation. However, the challenges to realising this potential increase too when other constraints such as population density, land conflicts and seasonality of solar power are factored in.

Hemant Mallya, Fellow, CEEW, said, “Land and water are critical resources for scaling up RE and green hydrogen in India. Prevention of desertification and innovative solutions to address land availability, such as agro-voltaics in horticulture and rooftop solar in dense Indian cities, will be essential. Moreover, as RE projects move into areas with higher climate risks, insurance companies could increasingly hesitate to provide coverage. Involving all stakeholders in the early stage of renewable project development and addressing climate risks will help ensure projects are commercially viable in the long run.”

Green hydrogen could also become very important to India’s clean energy transition. The CEEW study estimates that the country could produce around 40 MTPA at a cost lower than USD 3.5/kg. Water availability and management impact the cost of green hydrogen projects. This cost is expected to decrease further with advancements in electrolyser technology and more efficient RE systems. Low-cost green hydrogen could be produced in western and southern India, with Gujarat leading the production with an estimated potential of 8.8 MTPA at less than USD 3.5/kg, followed by Karnataka and Maharashtra with 5 MTPA each.

Finally, the CEEW study recommends a comprehensive approach that includes all stakeholders to ensure that India’s ambitious RE and green hydrogen targets are met sustainably and equitably. First, validating potential using higher-quality data and on-ground assessments is crucial, as current data may not fully reflect real conditions. States should establish graded land banks that consider RE quality, water availability, and proximity to infrastructure to ensure rapid project development. Evaluating and enhancing grid infrastructure and resilience are essential, particularly in regions with high RE seasonality, to support large-scale deployment. Additionally, revising water management policies to prioritise energy production and assessing the need for surface water storage will be vital to sustaining green hydrogen production and mitigating resource challenges.

Limitations: The accuracy of CEEW’s analysis is limited by certain constraints – circle rates usage for estimating market price, lack of data on social and cultural aspects related to land, lack of power grid mapping to determine RE evacuation potential, and use-modeling to estimate levelised cost of electricity and green hydrogen.

HUBNER India’s “Namma Factory” Achieves Significant Milestones Within 18 Months Of Commissioning

·         HUBNER India successfully completes two major orders, delivering a total of 540 gangway systems for the Vande Bharat Express (Train 18).

·         HUBNER India has commenced production of gangway systems for metro projects in São Paulo, Brazil, and Cairo, Egypt.

·         With increased demand, HUBNER India has expanded its workforce from 125 to nearly 200 employees.

·         Among the significant ongoing projects is an order from BEML for 800 gangway systems for the Mumbai Metro – one of the largest orders in HÃœBNER Group's history.

·         The plant was commissioned at the beginning of 2023

HÃœBNER Group has today announced that its “Namma Factory” in Bengaluru has achieved a significant milestone of the production and delivery of 2,000 gangways since the factory was commissioned at the beginning of 2023. In addition, HUBNER India has started production of gangway systems for metro projects to serve the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo and the Egyptian capital Cairo, from the plant.

The Namma Factory is developing into a major success story for the HÃœBNER Group with its achievements within such a short time frame. The Indian subsidiary HUBNER Interface Systems India Pvt. Ltd. (HIN) manufactures products and components in a particularly resource-efficient manner thanks to high-performance sustainability technologies.

Production levels raised with resource-saving manufacturing methods

“Our plan in India to meet the requirements of our local customers quickly and flexibly with a modern plant and a growing, high-performance team is working out just as we hoped,” says Kai Mentel, Managing Director of the HÃœBNER Group. “With the Namma Factory facility we are proving that it is possible to both raise our production capacities for India and Asia as a whole while at the same time manufacturing with especially sustainable and resource-conserving methods.”

With the production and delivery of 2,000 gangways, the Namma Factory team has also achieved other important milestones: Two major orders for a total of 540 gangway systems for the Vande Bharat Express (Train 18) have now been completed. In addition, HUBNER India has started production of gangway systems for metro projects to serve the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo and the Egyptian capital Cairo.

Handling major projects with increased production capacities

With a positive order situation, HUBNER India has increased its staff from 125 to nearly 200 employees. Among the major projects being handled by the growing team is an order from the Indian train manufacturer BEML for 800 gangway systems to serve the Mumbai Metro. This is one of the largest orders in the history of the HÃœBNER Group.

With the commissioning of the new factory, the HÃœBNER Group has significantly increased its production capacities for mobility markets in the Asia-Pacific region. The HÃœBNER Group has been the global market leader for gangway systems for many years. It is now using the added production capacities in India to undertake major projects for leading mobility providers such as BEML, as well as Alstom and Indian Railways.

Focus on sustainability: Half a million kilowatt hours of solar power

When designing the new Namma Factory, the HÃœBNER Group placed a special focus on sustainability. The bulk of the energy required to run the factory is generated by a photovoltaic system, which produced 587,055 kilowatt hours (KWh) of electricity in its first year of operation alone. Around 72 percent of this was fed into the local power grid. “To generate the same amount of electricity, 32 tons of coal would have had to be burned for the Namma Factory’s first year of operation,” explains Uwe Sperber, Location Head of HUBNER India. “This has saved us the equivalent of 60 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.”

The plant’s in-house wastewater treatment plant is also paying for itself – with a daily capacity of 15 cubic meters for wastewater treatment and a capacity of 60 cubic meters for storing and using rainwater. Through the use of this treated water for landscaping work and sanitary facilities, approximately 350 cubic meters of water have already been recycled in the first year. “We are proud of these successes in the operation of the Namma Factory and see them as an incentive to manage our processes with even greater resource efficiency in the future,” says Uwe Sperber.

In India for India: Developing local engineering expertise

It has been possible to develop local engineering expertise in the Namma Factory in connection with the Metro Cairo project for HÃœBNER’s customer Alstom. The train manufacturer has been mandated to make Egypt’s largest metro line more energy efficient and to design it for larger numbers of passengers – up to 2,580 people in a single train. For the development of the necessary gangway systems, the HÃœBNER Group is pooling its expertise at its locations in Kassel, Germany, and Bengaluru. The aim is to make it possible for the entire product development process for future projects to take place in India by the end of 2025.

“We have launched a real lighthouse project in the growing market of India with our Namma Factory,” points out Managing Director Kai Mentel. “This also sends a strong signal to our customers. The HÃœBNER Group is a high- performance partner that is acting on a global scale and is continually improving in the area of sustainability.”

UST Launches 'UST Retail GenAI Platform' - Transforming Retail Operations With Generative AI-Driven Solutions

·         Designed for the retail sector, the UST Retail GenAI Platform empowers businesses with end-to-end operational enhancements, driving efficiency and growth.

·         Purpose-built for retailers, the UST Retail GenAI Platform delivers comprehensive tools to optimize every facet of retail operations, from logistics to customer experience.

UST, a leading digital transformation solutions company, has unveiled its 'UST Retail GenAI platform' at the London Innovation Lab. Steve Rempel, SVP & International CIO at Walgreens Boots Alliance, inaugurated this pioneering platform to transform retail operations through the power of Generative AI. Steve shared valuable insights on critical success factors to enable GenAI adoption, including the need to appreciate the trust cycle while planning various investments. Prior to the inauguration, UST’s CEO, Krishna Sudheendra, shared the focus with which UST is championing the adoption of Generative AI, including the in-house program to train 25,000 employees on GenAI.

AI has the potential to unlock between $400B and $660B in economic value for the retail industry, according to research. However, few companies have fully realized the potential of new technologies. Developed in-house by UST’s technology and industry sector experts, the platform combines established business models with key GenAI capabilities such as search, summarization, automation, and creation to revolutionize retail practices.

This state-of-the-art platform enables larger business teams to have an out-of-box experience for scenarios in the retail enterprise that would benefit from GenAI-led investments. The platform maps the alignment between GenAI and business capabilities, allowing for more effective decision-making. The UST Retail GenAI platform enables retailers to safely and swiftly pilot GenAI-driven solutions, test various scenarios and outcomes, accelerate innovation, and optimize operations. Retailers can conceptualize and plan their AI strategies with the help of scenario cards, which integrate the 'Enterprise knowhow' to address specific challenges.

"At UST, we've partnered with six of the world's top ten retailers, transforming their businesses. While AI is already transforming retail operations, we still need to unlock its full potential. The UST Retail GenAI Platform offers a structured approach for exploring generative AI scenarios, marking a significant milestone in our mission to revolutionize retail operations through the power of generative AI. This is aligned to our focus on building platforms that can help scale the adoption of GenAI-led ways of working,” said Krishna Sudheendra, Chief Executive Officer, UST.

The benefits of investing in digital transformation and specifically AI were echoed in a recent survey commissioned by UST, where respondents cited building resilience to cope with future disruption the highest, increasing profitability, and improving sustainability as key outcomes of technological advancements within their business. UST AlphaAI consolidates the company’s AI offerings to enhance business agility, streamline operations, and accelerate digital transformation journeys.
