wienerberger India Is Commited Towards Building A Sustainable Future: Mr. Monnanda Appaiah

Wienerberger India is a company that manufactures clay building materials in India. They also import specialty products from other factories. Wienerberger India's goal is to provide sustainable, high-quality building materials for Indian consumers. 

The Vienna-headquartered company has its India's manufacturing facility is located in Kunigal, Karnataka, 70 km west of Bangalore. The facility is highly automated and uses robots for material handling. The facility uses locally available raw materials and energy to produce bricks. Some of the products include Porotherm Smart bricks, Aspect Clay Ventilated Façade tiles, and more. Infact, Porotherm Smart bricks are lightweight, durable, and have good thermal and sound insulation and their products are rated by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) and the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA) by TERI.

An Exclusive Conversation with Mr. Monnanda Appaiah, Managing Director, wienerberger India talks on the company's growth, expansion plans and also its commitment to create sustainable building solutions, its recent CSR initiative, and its plans for expansion."

Q 1. Manu Sharma: wienerberger India has recently completed the Yediyur CSR project, which provided 19 eco-friendly homes to underprivileged families. Can you tell us more about this initiative?

Monnanda Appaiah: We're proud of this project, which showcases our commitment to sustainable living and giving back to society. We used our state-of-the-art walling material, Porotherm Smart Bricks, to build these homes, ensuring superior thermal insulation and comfortable living spaces. We used the product to show that Porotherm can be used to build affordable homes as well. These load- bearing hollow bricks ensure huge overall saving in construction cost as you don't need beams, plastering or painting. 

Q 2.  Manu Sharma: That's impressive. What inspired wienerberger India to take up this project?

Monnanda Appaiah: As a responsible corporate citizen, we believe in contributing to the betterment of society. We identified a need for homes for a group of people below poverty line in Yediyur and decided to take action. This project is a testament to our values and vision.

Q 3. Manu Sharma: wienerberger India has received two awards for sustainable practices. Can you elaborate on your sustainability initiatives?

Monnanda Appaiah: Sustainability is at the core of our business. We're committed to reducing our ecological footprint through innovative building solutions, energy-efficient manufacturing processes, and waste reduction initiatives.

Q 4. Manu Sharma: Can you tell us about your state-of-the-art factory in Kunigal?


Monnanda Appaiah:
Our factory in Kunigal is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability. With an investment of around ?300 crores from our parent company in Austria, we've established a world-class manufacturing facility that produces high-quality building materials. Our factory is equipped with cutting-edge technology and employs over 250 people.

Q 5. Manu Sharma: Who are some of your prominent customers?

Monnanda Appaiah: We're proud to have worked with some of the leading builders and developers in South India, including Prestige Group, Brigade Group and Sattva among others. Our products, particularly Porotherm Smart Bricks, have been well-received by the market, and we're committed to continuing to innovate and meet the evolving needs of our customers.

Q 6. Manu Sharma: What are wienerberger India's expansion plans, and how do you see the company growing in the next few years?

Monnanda Appaiah: We're planning to increase our production capacity and expand our presence in markets beyond South India. We're also exploring new product lines and innovations to stay ahead in the market.

Genpact Joins Forces With WWF-India And WOTR To Drive Climate Action In India

Genpact (NYSE: G), a global advanced technology services and solutions company, today announced a collaboration with two leading non-profit organizations in India, the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) India and the Watershed Organization Trust (WOTR), to address the pressing challenges of climate change and support sustainable development initiatives across the country.

With WWF-India, Genpact aims to restore the ecological health of the Chambal-Yamuna River system, enhance biodiversity, and support conservation efforts. In addition, the collaboration with WOTR focuses on strengthening climate resilience in Rajasthan. Genpact’s project with WWF-India is centered on revitalizing the Chambal-Yamuna River basin, a critical freshwater ecosystem that supports 77% of the global breeding gharial population and is home to India’s national aquatic animal - the Ganga River dolphin. This project is expected to:

Benefit around 50,000 farmers by improving water security

Improve the population of river dolphins and gharials (crocodiles) along an 80-km stretch of the river

Conserve 5000 square km landscape, safeguarding biodiversity

Develop a multi-stakeholder framework for long-term conservation.

“The Chambal River, being a unique and critical freshwater ecosystem, holds an immense potential to realize the vision of a healthy Ganga, said Ravi Singh, Secretary General & CEO, WWF-India. “Through this initiative, WWF-India will work with key stakeholders, including local communities, the Governments of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, and the National Mission for Clean Ganga, to enhance understanding of the river—its hydrology, morphology, ecology, and governance to develop valuable insights and pave the way for long-term conservation of one of India’s important perennial rivers.”

With Genpact’s support, WOTR will work in the drought-prone region of Karauli, Rajasthan. Over the next three years, the project is expected to:

Create and restore water harvesting structures capable of saving 128 million litres of water

Introduce resilient farming techniques to help over 1600 farmers increase their crop productivity by up to 30%

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Inspires Young Innovators With 24-Hour Toyota Hackathon 2025 In Bangalore


Reinforcing its commitment to fostering innovation in road safety and celebrating ‘Road Safety Month’ (January 18 – February 17, 2025), Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today announced the successful completion of the 24-Hour Toyota Hackathon 2025 at R V Institute of Technology & Management, JP Nagar, Bangalore. This event marked the third and final chapter of TKM’s hackathon series for the year, following its successful editions in Delhi and Mumbai.

The Bangalore hackathon brought together over 400 young innovators from grades 9 to 11, representing nearly 100 schools. Participants showcased their creativity and technical acumen in developing practical solutions to critical road safety issues, aligning with TKM’s broader vision of achieving zero traffic fatalities. Graced by the presence of the Chief Guest Mr. S. Girish IPS Deputy Commissioner of Police, West along with TKM’s senior leadership, including Mr. Sudeep Dalvi, Chief Communication Officer, Senior Vice President & Head of State Affairs highlighted Toyota’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of changemakers.

India records the highest number of annual road crash fatalities globally. Each year, the country witnesses over 1,50,000 fatalities due to road accidents, with road traffic injuries being the leading cause of death for people aged 5-29 years. Recognizing this, TKM’s hackathon series across Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore has engaged students in the 2024-25 academic year, generating over 400 innovative concepts from Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore aimed at addressing these challenges. By fostering critical thinking and solution-oriented approaches, the initiative equips young minds to tackle modern road safety challenges. It serves as a platform that not only unlocks the potential of these innovators but also transforms them into ‘Change Agents,’ driving positive behavioural changes within their communities and contributing significantly to advancing road safety.

Participants tackled themes such as Road Safety Awareness and Education, School Zone Safety, Traffic Management, and IoT Integration in Road Safety. They were encouraged to develop both digital and policy-driven solutions capable of reducing road accidents and saving lives. Each hackathon followed a structured five-phase journey: Team Selection and Idea Submission, Boot Camp Shortlisting, the 24-Hour Hackathon, and Incubation Support for the top teams. Out of 100 initial teams, 33 teams advanced to the final phase, with three winning teams receiving continued mentorship to refine and implement their solutions.

England Wins IIHM’s Young Chef Olympiad; India-UAE Lift Dr. Suborno Bose Challenge Trophy


* World’s largest collaborative competition for young chefs concludes with a grand closing ceremony in Kolkata

Kamran Taylor, a young chef from England, was crowned champion at the world’s largest competition for young chefs, the IIHM International Young Chef Olympiad, which featured participants from 50 countries.

In a glittering Grand Finale of the 11th edition of YCO, contested by the top ten teams after the first two rounds, Armenia’s Arsen Armenakyan secured the Silver, while Yves Gabriel Cabrera Po from the Philippines won the Bronze Trophy.

The 11th edition of the Young Chef Olympiad was organized by the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) in partnership with the International Hospitality Council (IHC), London.

The host country, India, made the nation proud as Chef Aliakbar Mustafa Rampurawala from IIHM Bangalore won the prestigious Dr. Suborno Bose Culinary International Challenge Prize, along with UAE’s Jasmin Ali Maher Lutfi Jarrar. This unique category featured 28 teams, which were not placed in either the Grand Finale or the Plate rounds. They were divided into 14 pairs, representing two countries each, in a spirit of culinary collaboration.

The Plate Trophy, contested by teams ranked between 11 and 20 after the first round, was proudly lifted by South Korea’s Shi-Hyun An.

The YCO Champion, Plate Trophy winner, and Dr. Suborno Bose International Culinary Challenge recipients were chosen after two rounds of intense competition showcasing the best culinary talents from around the world.

Dr. Suborno Bose, Chairman of the Young Chef Olympiad, said, “The world of culinary arts is united under the grand Kolkata sky. Culinary diplomacy means this. In a united world of young chefs, it’s the best way to make the world happy and sustainable through food. Only in India can you achieve something like this. This year, YCO felt like a family, and we had a new venue for the opening ceremony in Goa, on the banks of the Arabian Sea.”

Prof David Foskett OBE, Chairman of the Jury for YCO said, “YCO is a grand celebration of friendship, Unity and Passion. It depicts the unifying power of food in a world of conflict. YCO can happen only in India, under the visionary leadership of Dr Bose, who does again and again and again.

Padmashri Chef Sanjeev Kapoor remarked, “YCO is surely about compassion. But when you do it for 11 years, you multiply the compassion. YCO is also about competition with collaboration. Dr Bose is not only a lovable madman with a golden jacket, but he is a man of steel.” 

Dr. Bose also highlighted IIHM’s efforts in integrating AI into hospitality and hospitality education. He announced IIHM’s Global Knowledge Sharing Declaration on AI in Hospitality with 50 countries, promoting inclusivity, human touch, and sustainability.

On a magical night in Kolkata, everyone emerged as winners, as the united world of young chefs celebrated their roles as ambassadors of culinary diplomacy, dancing into the night amidst a swirl of colours and cultures.

University Of Glasgow Announces New Postgraduate Study With Biocon Work Placement During Delegation Visit To India


University of Glasgow has launched an innovative and exciting new postgraduate study programme with Indian biopharmaceutical giant Biocon.

Postgraduates studying for a new MSc in Industrial Biotechnology will benefit from a six-week work placement at Biocon facilities in Bengaluru.

Starting in September 2025, six students will receive industry training at the sites of Biocon and its contract research and development subsidiary, Syngene. Students’ travel costs will be covered within the degree, and a stipend will be provided by Biocon. India is a major strategic partner for the University of Glasgow and students from the country are the institution’s second largest international population.

The announcement comes as a delegation from the University travelled to Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi to engage with potential students and meet key partners and stakeholders to discuss current and future collaborations across teaching and research.

During their visit, members of the University of Glasgow delegation also agreed on an ongoing collaboration with the Science Gallery Bengaluru (SGB). With SRB the University has developed a 60 credit Post Graduate Certificate. This is the first step in a long-term partnership with the final aim being the development of a full Masters Programme for staff at the SGB and for students at Glasgow.

While in India, leading members of the University also held meetings to discuss and agree increased collaborations with Shrimad Rajchandra Mission in Dharampur and OPJindal Global University (JGU), Delhi.

Vedanta IOK’s Multi-Specialty Mega Health Camp Benefits 25 Villages


Vedanta IOK’s, in collaboration with, Basaveshwara Medical College & Hospital, Chitradurga, Community Health Centre, Sirigere & Medihelp Foundation organized a ‘Multi-specialty Mega Health Camp’, at Community Health Centre, Sirigere.The health camp benefitted community members from around 25 villages.

The health camp, organised under Sesa Goa’s Project ‘Aarogya’, provided specialty services including Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, ENT, Dental, General Medicine, Paediatrics, and Gynaecologist. BP & Sugar Tests were also carried out for the visiting community members. Advise pertaining to medical conditions and lifestyle diseases such as Anaemia, Hypertension, Diabetes, knee and body pain, varicose veins, thyroid etc.

Manjappa, an 83-year-old person, hailing from Muthugduru village, Chitradurga, said, “I have been suffering from knee pain and body ache, and so I decided to visit the Multi-specialty Mega Health camp, organised by Vedanta – Iron Ore Karnataka at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Sirigere. The doctors from Basaveshwara Medical College & Hospital provided me with very good treatment and gave me the required medications. The camp was very beneficial for all the community members including me, for whom it is difficult to travel to Chitradurga city for treatment. The health camp was easily accessible to us, as it was organised in a nearby location. Thank you, Vedanta IOK, for the health camp!”

Dr Pavithra, MBBS, Community Health Centre (CHC), Sirigere, said, “Vedanta IOK has been constantly helping CHC, Sirigere, by conducting Multi-specialty Mega Health Camps, once in three months, in collaboration with the Basaveshwara Medical College & Hospital, Chitradurga. The company has provided us a lot of assistance, during the COVID times. They conduct regular health awareness sessions on diseases such as Malaria, Tuberculosis, Cervical cancer, Menstrual health awareness session, and so on. Home Affairs Delivers On Commitment To Supercharge Tourism As Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) Digital Platform Goes Live


The Department of Home Affairs’ ground-breaking digital platform for the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS), goes live for the first time.

This platform will drive increased tourism from the major source markets of India and China by enabling vetted and approved tour operators to submit group applications for large tour groups from these two countries. This addresses a long-standing obstacle to tourism growth, whereby long queues, red tape and the inability to process group applications timeously led to inefficiency in the issuing of visas for tourists from these countries.

To illustrate the scale of the change: before TTOS was created, there were only two South African missions in China, and only two missions in India, to serve the 2.8 billion people living in those two countries who wanted to come as tourists to South Africa. But under the new TTOS digital-first system, tourists from India and China who use approved tour operators will no longer have to visit a mission, will no longer fill in a single form, will not need to stand in a single queue, and will receive their visas digitally within three days.

In 2023, South Africa only received 37 000 tourists from China and only 79 000 from India. By enhancing visa efficiency and security through TTOS, Home Affairs looks forward to enabling much faster tourism growth from these two burgeoning source markets.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, said: “The fact that Home Affairs took the TTOS from conceptualisation to implementation in less than six months demonstrates our commitment to embracing digital transformation and to playing our role as an economic enabler to create jobs. Research has shown that for every twelve new tourists attracted by TTOS, we can create one new job in South Africa. This demonstrates the power of Home Affairs’ digital transformation agenda to create jobs.”

Minister Schreiber added: “I want to acknowledge our in-house team of developers who built this system. I also want to thank the Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshaveni, as well as the Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, for their support in rolling out this innovative new system in record time. This shows the power of collaboration through the Government of National Unity as we pursue our apex priority to grow the economy and create jobs.”

MAHE Creates A Landmark In Digital Education By Conducting First Convocation For Online Graduates


Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) hosted the very first convocation for online graduates on 8th February celebrating the achievements of 426 students who successfully completed postgraduate programs., including MBA (Master of Business Administration), Master of Science (MSc) in Business Analytics, MSc in Data Science, Post Graduate Certificate (PGCP) in Business Analytics, and PGCP in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, through a fully online learning experience.

Students from 22 different countries around the globe attended online and including South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Uganda, attended in person to receive their degrees, highlighting the far-reaching impact of MAHE’s online education programs. Reinforcing the credibility of online education, the UGC guidelines affirm, “The online degree is recognized as equivalent to the conventional degrees offered on campuses, and students can apply for all job opportunities and higher education as per their eligibility.” MAHE pioneered its online degree programs in September 2022, envisioning a future where learning transcends geographical boundaries

The Government of Karnataka has posthumously honoured Late Mr. Vikram S. Kirloskar, former Vice Chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) with the ‘Industrial Legacy’ Award for his visionary leadership, pioneering contributions, and transformative role in shaping Karnataka’s industrial, economic, and social landscape. The felicitation, presented at the Invest Karnataka 2025 Global Investors Meet (GIM), acknowledges his lifelong commitment to industrialization, job creation, skill development, and strengthening local supplier ecosystem all of which have significantly contributed to Karnataka’s emergence as a global manufacturing hub. Further solidifying his legacy, Toyota Kirloskar Motor was also honoured with the ‘Sunrise Sector Pioneer Award’ in the Automotive Division at the event, recognizing the company’s leadership in innovation, sustainability, and economic growth in Karnataka—a testament to the strong foundation laid by Late Mr. Vikram S. New Shine 125: Vibrant Design and Hi-tech Features

The design of the Shine 125 retains its elegant and stylish appeal, now complemented by a new colour scheme for a refreshed look. It is offered in six colour options – Pearl Igneous Black, Geny Gray Metallic, Matte Axis Gray Metallic, Rebel Red Metallic, Decent Blue Metallic, and Pearl Siren Blue. Additionally, the motorcycle now gets a 90mm wider rear tyre, enhancing both visual appeal and road stability.

The new Shine 125 now features a Fully Digital instrument cluster, which provides a host of information including real-time mileage, Range (distance to empty), service due indicator, gear position indicator and Eco indicator. Additionally, it comes equipped with a USB Type-C charging port, ensuring convenience for riders to charge their devices on the go.

At the heart of the Shine 125 is a 123.94cc, single-cylinder PGM-Fi engine that is now OBD2B compliant and develops 7.93 kW of power at 7500 RPM and 11 Nm of peak torque at 6000 RPM. It is also equipped with an Idling stop system which enhances fuel efficiency, aligning with Honda’s sustainable philosophy.

Epsilon Group To Invest Rs. 15,350 Crores, Signs MoU With Government Of Karnataka

Epsilon Group, a leading industrial conglomerate driving the global carbon black and advanced battery materials industry, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka (GoK) to invest Rs. 15,350 crores in developing state-of-the-art manufacturing and research facility for EV battery testing & advanced materials. This strategic investment, planned over the next 10 years, will bolster India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, creating thousands of jobs, and strengthen India’s position as a hub for advanced battery technology.

As part of the MoU, Epsilon Group, along with its subsidiaries Epsilon Advanced Materials and Epsilon CAM Pvt. Ltd. will manufacture sustainable and high-performance Graphite Anode and Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Cathode battery materials while Inspire Energy Research Center Pvt. Ltd. will focus on R&D, testing & training for EV battery materials and battery manufacturers. The plan includes an investment of Rs. 9,000 crores to set up a Graphite Anode manufacturing plant, Rs. 6,000 crores for a LFP Cathode manufacturing plant, and Rs. 350 crores for battery materials and battery testing R&D and training center.

This initiative supports Karnataka’s ambition to become India’s energy transition hub, making the state a key destination for battery materials production. Epsilon Group will cater to Indian battery manufacturers, enabling them to access locally produced, high-performance materials to enhance supply chain resilience and support India's growing EV market. The state government will facilitate necessary approvals, incentives, and infrastructure support for Epsilon Group’s projects, in line with its policies to promote industrial development.

To meet the rising demand for EVs in India, Epsilon Group will act as a sustainable and reliable manufacturer of Graphite Anode and LFP Cathode materials, reducing dependence on imports and supporting Indian cell manufacturers in achieving higher Domestic Value Addition (DVA). Epsilon can deliver 100% DVA for anode materials, while cathode materials achieve 60% DVA, significantly enhancing local value creation and supply chain localization.
