Empowering Young Innovators: Hack To The Future 2025 Sparks Creativity And Solutions

·       Held from January 27 to 31 at the Quest Learning Observatory (QLO) in Bengaluru,

Quest Alliance proudly concluded its groundbreaking five-day hackathon, Hack to the Future: Innovating for Participatory Futures. This year's event empowered over 57 young innovators from five states—Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, and Odisha—to develop scalable solutions for real-world challenges.

Held from January 27 to 31 at the Quest Learning Observatory (QLO) in Bengaluru, the hackathon fostered creativity, technological expertise, and problem-solving skills. Participants from diverse socio-economic backgrounds overcame language barriers to collaborate, explore new technologies, and engage with industry mentors. They developed prototypes integrating advancements in AI, IoT, and sustainable technologies.

The event concluded with a grand showcase where students presented their solutions to a distinguished jury. The platform illustrated their capacities as agents of change in the fast-paced digital world and aimed to bridge societal gaps by empowering students from underprivileged and government school backgrounds.

Participants gained not only technical skills but also improved communication and storytelling abilities—essential for rallying support and scaling their projects. Inclusivity was emphasized, with special priority given to girls and marginalized community members. In this way, Hack to the Future prepares young innovators for meaningful contributions to the economy and society by equipping them with skills, mentorship, and exposure to emerging technologies.

Another student, Bhagyashree, a Class IX learner from Government High School Garudacharpalya, Bengaluru, Karnataka, said, "The hackathon process enabled me to foster collaboration with other state students with the activities given. I also learned new words and made new friends. Earlier, we depended on our Mentor for prototype building but now we engrossed ourselves independently in creating applications, coding, etc. My presentation skills have improved in this process. Overall, the experience was fun and engaging. Every surprise from here is learning."

The positive impact was felt across the board. Aardhya Panigrahi, a Class IX student from AP Model School, Mattam, Sariyapalli, Andhra Pradesh, shared her excitement: “Our mentors guided us in selecting the right materials and refining our prototypes. This experience has been life-changing! Beyond working on our project, the most thrilling part was traveling outside our village, flying on a plane, and meeting people from across India.”

Tracing the growth of the students she mentored, Sumeeta Srivastava, an educator from CM SOE Girls School, Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, observed, “The hackathon was a truly unique experience for our students, especially in a government school setting. It bridged the gap between what they had only read about in textbooks and the real-world applications of those concepts. Watching them engage with sensors, circuits, and other hands-on projects was inspiring. Beyond the technical skills, I saw our students grow in so many ways. They became more empathetic team players, stronger communicators, and better problem solvers. The students from the minorities were initially hesitant to speak up but eventually found the confidence to present their prototypes to their peers and judges. It was heartwarming to see them blossom, encouraged by their peers and mentors.”

Emphasizing the far-reaching impact of hackathons, Shiji Abraham, State Lead, Gujarat, Quest Alliance, stated, “Hackathons provide students with a comprehensive learning experience, enhancing not just their technical abilities but also their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. They introduce hands-on applications of scientific concepts, enabling students to create real-world solutions. Moreover, these events foster collaboration and broaden perspectives, making them a powerful gateway into STEM careers. This is why integrating hackathons into school curricula is crucial.”

Underscoring the important link between academics and real-world application, Sameera, Senior Program Manager at Quest Alliance, commented, “One of the Andhra Pradesh teams initially identified water pollution as their problem statement. Using their chemistry lessons, they tested the pH levels of a local lake to validate their concerns. Hackathons like these bring textbook knowledge to life and show students how theoretical concepts translate into real-world impact. This is the reason why hackathons, both national and local, are core to the work we are doing in Andhra, especially in the space of responsible and ethical usage of AI.”

Neha Parti, Director of Schools at Quest Alliance, emphasized the broader impact of such initiatives: “For many students, this hackathon was filled with first-time experiences—boarding a flight, meeting peers from different states, and experimenting with cutting-edge technology like AI and 3D printing. Exposure to such environments gives them an opportunity to understand their own potential better and broadens their horizon. We need more such opportunities created for our government school learners and teachers to build a more positive narrative around the potential children have in these schools. Given the right kind of opportunity, they can thrive and bring their ideas to life.” The five-day Hack to the Future was not just a hackathon; it was a celebration of collaboration and innovation among all the participants. Students came from diverse backgrounds to create experiences that unlocked the cultural richness they brought. The initiative celebrated the power of youth to imagine and design solutions that make a difference.

TKM Signs MoU With Watershed Organisation Trust For Launch Of ‘Project Jeevan Dhara’ For Development In Aurad Taluk, Karnataka

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable development and community upliftment by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR) to implement Project Jeevan Dhara, an initiative to transform rural lives though integrated watershed management. This marks TKM's first such initiative, aiming to revitalize the drought-prone Aurad Taluk in Bidar District, Karnataka, by addressing critical socio-economic and environmental challenges.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Sudeep Dalvi, Chief Communication Officer, Senior Vice President & Head of State Affairs, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, and Mr. Roshan, General Manager, representing TKM’s management, during a formal ceremony held in Aurad Taluk. Spanning 9 villages and 5,322.34 hectares, the initiative will directly benefit 11,026 community members across 2,063 households, addressing pressing socio-economic and environmental challenges in the region.

Aurad Taluk faces recurring drought conditions due to its average rainfall of only 800 mm annually. Over 80% of the land is degraded, with declining groundwater levels and less than 7% of the area under irrigation. These factors have led to widespread reliance on rain-fed, single-crop agriculture, forcing many families to migrate in search of better livelihoods.

Project Jeevan Dhara adopts a ridge-to-valley approach to soil and water conservation, focusing on ecological rejuvenation, agricultural sustainability, and livelihood enhancement. Key objectives include:

Improve soil moisture and year-round water availability for drinking, domestic, and irrigation purposes.

Promote climate-resilient agricultural practices to ensure sustainable crop production.

Introduce need-based livelihood activities to support marginalized and asset-less families.

Strengthen community-based institutions to ensure the long-term sustainability of resources.

The project involves:

Construction of check dams, gabions, and other water resources to recharge groundwater and create additional irrigation potential.

Implementing measures to reduce soil erosion and enhance in-situ moisture conservation.

Promoting both farm-based activities such as dairy, poultry, goat-rearing, and nurseries, as well as non-farm activities like tailoring to provide alternative livelihoods.

Active engagement with Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Village Development Committees (VDCs) will ensure that the local community is involved throughout the program, fostering a sense of ownership and ensuring the project’s success and sustainability.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sudeep Dalvi, Chief Communication Officer, Senior Vice President & Head State Affairs - Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “At Toyota Kirloskar Motor, we are deeply committed to driving sustainable change that aligns with our global philosophy of ‘Creating Sustainable Societies.’ Project Jeevan Dhara is a significant step towards addressing the pressing challenges in Aurad Taluk, where water scarcity and soil degradation have severely impacted livelihoods. By partnering with WOTR Trust and engaging local communities, we aim to implement holistic solutions that not only improve water availability and agricultural resilience but also empower families with sustainable livelihood opportunities. We firmly believe that collaborative efforts like these can create long-term value, transforming the lives of over 11,000 community members and setting a benchmark for sustainable rural transformation. At Toyota Kirloskar Motor, we are proud to be a part of this journey toward building a more resilient and inclusive future for all."

Project Jeevan Dhara is expected to rejuvenate the region’s ecosystem, improve agricultural resilience, and significantly enhance the quality of life for the local community. By integrating environmental stewardship with socio-economic development, TKM continues to set benchmarks for sustainable rural transformation and reaffirms its dedication to creating long-term value for society.

PolyCycl Launches ‘Generation VI’ Chemical Recycling Technology To Address India’s Plastic Pollution Crisis

·         Patented ContiFlow Cracker™ technology enables the conversion of single-use and other hard-to-recycle waste plastics into new, food-grade quality polymers and other low-carbon materials.

·         Developed 100% in India over 10+ years of R&D, the technology provides the critical 'missing link' towards building a true plastic-to-plastic circular economy and enhancing rates of plastic recycling both in India and globally.

·         Highly cost-effective, modular and continuous design (15-100 TPD per line) ensures project EBITDAs exceeding 50%.

·         Technology supports India’s ambitious EPR targets, including the generation of virgin-quality recycled content for food-contact packaging applications.

PolyCycl, a circular economy technology startup based in Chandigarh, India, today announced the launch of its patented Contiflow Cracker™ Generation VI chemical recycling pyrolysis technology. This fully indigenous innovation addresses India’s escalating plastic waste problem by enabling the conversion of hard-to-recycle plastics —such as single-use grocery bags and food-contaminated packaging— into food-grade polymers, renewable chemicals and sustainable fuels.

The launch is the result of over a decade of focused R&D, involving 150+ man-years of effort. The Generation VI technology is protected by multiple international patents and facilitates the creation of a plastic-to-plastic circular economy, where commonly used plastics (e.g. polyolefin packaging) no longer need to be down-cycled, incinerated or landfilled at the end of their life. Instead, they can be continuously recycled in a closed-loop, without any loss of quality.

PolyCycl’s Generation VI technology combines Contiflow Cracker™ - the company’s fully-continuous thermo-chemical pyrolysis process with its proprietary PyOilClean™ refining technology. This combination transforms low-grade plastics into liquified hydrocarbon oils, which are then purified to remove contaminants like halogens and hetero-atoms. The resulting chemical feedstocks are versatile raw materials used by the petrochemical and hydrocarbon industries to produce a wide range of premium low-carbon materials, including circular polymers. The technology, in essence, turns such low-grade waste plastics into a resource for manufacturing new materials.

“India generates over 10.2 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with more than 40% of this being single-use plastics like grocery bags and flexible packaging. Traditional recycling methods struggle to handle this waste, which often ends up clogging drains, littering streets, or polluting waterways” says Amit Tandon, Founder and CEO of PolyCycl. “PolyCycl’s technology offers a novel solution for recycling such plastics by thermally breaking them down to their molecular building blocks (oligomers), which can then be re-constituted to create new virgin-quality materials. Our technology, honed over a decade of R&D, delivers high conversion yields of 65-75% and generates chemical feedstocks that have been qualified for the circular economy by multiple petrochemical companies globally.”

The technology’s patented fully-continuous process architecture provides ease-of-scale and development of modular lines each capable of processing between 15 and 100 tons per day (TPD) of plastics. Importantly, the patented design offers significant cost efficiencies, with capital costs up to one-half to one-fourth of competitive technologies in Europe and the US, while delivering project EBITDA exceeding 50%.

India’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules mandate 10% recycled content in flexible packaging and 30% in rigid plastic packaging by 2025–26. PolyCycl’s technology supports these targets, enabling production of recycled virgin polymers that meet stringent requirements for contact-sensitive applications, including for food and pharmaceutical packaging.

With three out of four FMCG products in India packaged in flexible formats, single-use plastics pose a key challenge in the nation’s journey toward building a sustainable economy for plastics. “The plastic waste problem is complex and requires multiple solutions,” says Mr. Tandon. “From better design for recyclability to stronger EPR mechanisms and innovative recycling technologies, each step plays a role. Chemical recycling is one piece of the puzzle, and we hope our work helps advance the adoption of circular economy practices across industries.”

About PolyCycl

PolyCycl is a circular economy technology company tackling one of the most critical environmental challenges of our times - plastic waste. Its advanced chemical recycling technology enables a true plastic-to-plastic circular economy, converting hard-to-recycle plastics, such as single-use polythene bags and packaging films, into circular feedstocks for manufacturing of new food-grade quality plastics, sustainable fuels and renewable chemicals. The company’s fully-continuous conversion technology enables scalability and economic efficiencies, with a capital cost that is 1/2 to 1/4th of global counterparts, while simultaneously facilitating low operational costs and project EBITDA exceeding 50%.

Developed over a decade of R&D spanning 150,000+ man-hours, the technology is protected by multiple international patents.  In addition to the planetary benefits of combating plastic pollution, the technology holds the potential to reduce the usage of fossil resources in manufacturing of new plastics by up to 75-90%, while also reducing associated greenhouse gas emissions by 40%.

These topics are delivered through deeply interactive and experiential sessions, blending cognitive and energy practices to provide students with practical tools for emotional resilience.

The program aims to equip students with higher self-awareness and emotional intelligence (EI), which are increasingly sought after by employers. Many organizations actively assess EI during their recruitment processes, and completing this program will serve as a tangible testament to these skills. By investing in students’ emotional intelligence, MAHE positions itself as a forward-thinking institution that prepares its graduates to excel in today’s workplace.

Prof. (Dr.) Madhu Veeraraghavan, Pro Vice Chancellor, MAHE, Bengaluru, highlighting the pioneering nature of the initiative and its alignment with Global best practices, said, “At Mahe, we wanted to create a safe space where students could openly express themselves and find the support they need. To truly understand their concerns, we conducted surveys and engaged in meaningful conversations with students. This is how Manam was born—a platform designed to offer practical solutions while making the experience engaging and enjoyable.

What makes Manam special is its scale and accessibility. MAHE is the first institute in the country to implement such an initiative at this level, ensuring that every student has access to the program. We recognize that mental well-being is just as important as academic success, and through Manam, we are committed to fostering a culture of support, awareness, and growth and mental wellness .”

Our goal is simple: to equip students with the right tools, create a judgment-free environment, and encourage them to prioritize their well-being. This isn’t just about addressing challenges—it’s about empowering students to navigate life with confidence. At MAHE, we believe that change begins with understanding, and Manam is a step toward building a stronger, more resilient student community".

Maheima Kapur, Core Facilitator. Manam, said, “Manam was created to normalize conversations around mental health, breaking the stigma that often prevents students from seeking help with counsellors. Through extensive student input, we designed a program that fosters self-awareness and empowers individuals to recognize when they need support.

With more than 7,000 students today and even more tomorrow, we know that counseling services alone aren't enough. That’s why Manam lays a foundation for self-learning, helping students navigate their emotions while ensuring expert help is available when needed. From its name to its design, Manam speaks the language of Gen Z—making mental well-being accessible, engaging, and truly relevant to this generation".

Dr. Raghavendra Prabhu, Deputy Registrar, MAHE Bengaluru Campus, focusing on the unique aspects of the program and its relevance to students, commented,” The key objective of Manam is to normalize conversations around mental and emotional well-being on campus and strip away the taboo and stigma associated with openly sharing and reaching out for support during difficult phases.

Manam is created to normalize conversations around mental and emotional well-being, breaking the stigma around being open about the low phases in life. Through extensive student input, MAHE dragged a program that builds self-awareness and empowers individuals.

The inaugural batch is expected to commence in on Jan 31st, 2025. A dedicated website has been created https://manam.manipal.edu/ for an experiential course on Emotional well-being.
