India’s leading feminine-care brand Whisper, from the house of Procter & Gamble, is raising awareness about— the early onset of menstruation among young girls — as part of the fifth edition of its #KeepGirlsInSchool (KGIS) movement. With girls starting periods as early as 8 years of age, the need to create awareness early on is crucial, as 26 million girls can be at the risk of dropping out of school without period education and access to period products.* Studies have found that one out of five girls could be dropping out of school due to lack of period education and access to period products.** In Karnataka sanitary napkin penetration is around 47%, implying that around 53% of households haven’t used a sanitary napkin in the past 12 months. In rural Karnataka, the penetration is just about 30%^

In India today, girls as young as 8 years of age are beginning their menstrual cycle, as per several reports, and so are at a higher risk of dropping out from school due to lack of period education. This could lead to escalation in absenteeism and increased drop out rate if they do not learn and are made aware at the right time. Whisper is at the forefront of educating girls across the country about the importance of menstrual hygiene, normalising any mthys and taboos about periods, with an aim to decrease dropout rates caused by insufficient information and lack of access to period products. To date, Whisper’s Keep Girls In School program has taught over 100 million schoolgirls and mothers about periods and period products, and provided free sanitary napkins to girls.

Whisper’s new emotional film features young 8-year-old girls who know nothing about menstruation and think up the worst possible scenarios as the cause of unexpected bleeding in one of their friends. The film aims to normalise this natural biological change in their body by educating young girls in school about the early onset of periods with a fun, catchy jingle that reiterates, “periods ka matlab healthy hai aap (periods means you are healthy)".

ONDC And WinZO Collaborate To Boost Digital Commerce In India


* WinZO enables ONDC to access its over 175 million paying users to connect buyers and sellers to facilitate digital commerce.

In a move aimed at democratizing access to digital commerce and fostering transparent and fair market access, WinZO is collaborating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). Epson Brand Recognized As A Well-Known Trademark In India


* Seiko Epson Corporation has announced that India has recognized the Epson brand as a well-known trademark in February 2024.

To prevent consumer confusion caused by the unauthorized use or registration of well-known or famous trademarks, certain countries, and regions, including China, India, Türkiye, and Taiwan, have established systems to recognize these trademarks. In India, the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks recognizes trademarks that are widely recognized in the country as "well-known trademarks." As of May 2024, a total of 281 well-known trademarks have been recognized in this way.

Recognition will broaden the scope of protection for the Epson trademark in India. It will avoid customer confusion and enhance brand protection of the brand in India by preventing unauthorized use and registration of the trademark by third parties, even in product and service areas where the company does not hold trademark rights.

Epson has gained protection for the Epson trademark globally in countries and regions that, like India, recognize well-known and famous trademarks. Recognition as a famous trademark or the equivalent was gained in Taiwan in 2004, China in 2007, and Türkiye in 2011. OTPless Raises $3.5M To Revolutionize Mobile Authentication


OTPless, an innovative customer identity and access management startup, has raised $3.5 million in its pre-series A funding round. The investment was led by Sidbi, with participation from Venture Highway, FJ Labs, and Piper Serica. This funding marks a significant milestone for the Surat, Gujarat based startup, which aims to disrupt the traditional methods of user authentication and set new standards in the industry. The proceeds bring OTPless’ total raised to $6.5 million. OTPless says that they’ll be put toward expanding the presence globally and service beyond authentication and into authorization — that is, determining the permissions a user has versus simply identifying who they are.

Led by Bhavik Koladiya, Satyam Nathani and Tanmay Sagar, a founding team of fintech unicorn BharatPe, OTPless is transforming the authentication landscape with its unique approach that eliminates the need for One-Time Passwords (OTPs). Instead, OTPless enables users to sign up and sign in on websites and apps via WhatsApp and other methods, offering a seamless and secure authentication experience. Organizations lose millions of dollars every year due to “inherently unsafe” OTP-based authentication, according to the startup; not only do weak OTPs account for more than 80% of all account breaches, but the average help desk labor cost to reset a single password stands at more than $70. 

OTPless says its web-based authenticator is the first natively passwordless identity and risk management solution, which currently handles more than 9,000 authentication requests per second, can reduce account resets by 96%, the company says, and reduces customer authentication from 1 minute to 2 seconds. 

“OTPs are not only the leading cause of security breaches, but are also known to cause friction throughout a user journey — leading to churn and a negative experience for end customers,” Satyam said. “The proliferation of cybersecurity attacks due to poor identity and authentication practices such as man-in-middle attacks, bot attacks, session hijacking, brute force attacks and other types of social engineering compromise. Authentication and user management are critical parts of any digital application.”

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das recently emphasized the Reserve Bank's commitment to enhancing digital payment security, highlighting the need for additional authentication factors (AFA). While SMS-based OTPs have been the standard, new technologies offer more secure alternatives. The RBI's principle-based framework aims to support these innovations, facilitating their adoption for digital security.

"Over the years, the Reserve Bank has prioritized the security of digital payments, particularly the requirement for Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA). Though RBI has not prescribed any particular AFA, the payments ecosystem has largely adopted SMS-based OTPs. With innovations in technology, alternative authentication mechanisms have emerged in recent years. To facilitate the use of such mechanisms for digital security, it is proposed to adopt a principle-based Framework for the authentication of digital payment transactions," said Governor Shaktikanta Das in a recent announcement.

As per industry estimates, billions of OTPs are consumed daily in India alone, with OTP sharing being a major contributor to fraud through social engineering. Traditional OTP-based systems are vulnerable to various types of attacks, including phishing, SIM swapping, and man-in-the-middle attacks. These vulnerabilities have highlighted the need for more secure and user-friendly authentication methods, driving the demand for solutions like OTPless.

JGRCHRI Plans To Set-Up 250-Bed Multi-Specialty Hospital In Belgaum


The Shri Jagadguru Gurusidda Rajayogindra Co-operative Hospital and Research Institute (SJGRCHRI) in Belgaum District, established in 1951 as India's first-ever cooperative hospital, is planning a significant expansion of its services with the construction of a new 250-bed multi-specialty hospital.

This ambitious project marks a major step forward for the institution, which currently operates a 10-bed facility specializing in Unani medicine, a traditional Indian system of medicine. 

Over the past 70 years, SJGRCHRI has grown from its humble beginnings to become a respected center for medical care, education, and research.  It has also played a pivotal role in establishing strong medical and nursing education programs.

The proposed multi-specialty hospital will allow SJGRCHRI to offer a wider range of medical services.  This will be a boon for the Ghataprabha and surrounding areas, who currently have limited access to specialized healthcare.

40 Indian Startups Have Come Out Strongly In Support Of Draft Digital Competition Bill


These startups which include prominent names like Matrimony.com, TrulyMadly, Innov8, QuackQuack, Magicbricks, Hoichoi, Medibuddy etc. have written to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs saying that the Bill is a step in the right direction and it will address long-standing concerns of Indian startups to rein in practices which stifle innovation, limit consumer choice, and hinder the growth of young businesses.

While requesting that the government move forward with the Bill at the earliest and not give in delay tactics, the startups have also asked for an upward revision of the thresholds for designating Systematically Significant Digital Enterprises (SSDEs). They have argued that the Bill should only target the real gatekeepers of the internet - firms that have long enjoyed dominant positions, accumulating extensive resources, and influence to shape the rules of the digital ecosystem. By narrowly targeting the new law, the government can rein in monopolistic practices while making sure that Indian startups have the space to grow within India and beyond Indian borders, to compete globally.  

More Context: The Committee on Digital Competition Law (CDCL) published its report (https://shorturl.at/jwBM6) in March this year outlining the challenges associated with anti-competitive practices of digital enterprises such as anti-steering, self-preferencing, tying and bundling in the digital markets in India. The report proposed a Digital Competition Bill providing for ex-ante regulations to curb these anti-competitive practices. The Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration (WGSHA), Manipal, celebrated a significant milestone with the inauguration of its Centre of Excellence for Skill Training on May 15th. The Centre was inaugurated by Mr. Rajan Bahadur, CEO of the Tourism and Hospitality Skill Council (THSC). Successful candidates will receive a joint certificate from THSC and WGSHA, validating their proficiency in hospitality skills.

This launch comes at a crucial time, as the demand for skilled professionals in India’s travel and tourism sector is expected to rise. Projections indicate a need for 19.4 million new jobs by 2033, with a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 8.4%. Initiatives like the one undertaken by WGSHA and its partners are vital in addressing this skill gap.
