IIHM Celebrates Dr. Suborno Bose's Vision Through Bhartiya Sahas Divas And Nil Waste Kitchen Initiative

* One Man Dared, Thousands Now Dream

On Chairman Dr. Suborno Bose's birthday, IIHM honours courage, entrepreneurship and sustainability with nationwide student-led initiatives

Celebrating the transformative power of courage, vision and innovation, the International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) observed Bhartiya Sahas Divas across its campuses, commemorating the birthday of its Founder and Chairman, Dr. Suborno Bose. More than a celebration of an individual, the occasion honoured a philosophy that has inspired thousands of students to dream fearlessly, embrace entrepreneurship and create meaningful impact through hospitality education.

Built around the powerful message ‘One Man Dared. Now Dare with Him,’ this year's Bhartiya Sahas Divas paid tribute to Dr. Bose's remarkable journey in establishing one of the world's leading hospitality education institutions at a time when hotel management was far from being considered a mainstream career choice.

The celebration reflected IIHM's larger philosophy- ‘Sahas Se Srijan. Srijan Se Samriddhi’ From courage comes creation. From creation comes India's future.

A Legacy that Inspires Every Student

As part of the celebrations, IIHM campuses organised activities highlighting innovation, entrepreneurship and leadership, encouraging students to believe that courage is the first step towards creating opportunities.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Suborno Bose, Chairman, IIHM, said, "At IIHM, we believe that the greatest qualification is not a degree but the courage to imagine, create and lead. When young minds are empowered to take bold steps with integrity and purpose, they become the architects of tomorrow's India."

Ms. Sanchari Chowdhury, Director - IIHM Bangalore and Head - South Operations, IIHM, said, "Bhartiya Sahas Divas is not merely a celebration of Dr. Suborno Bose's birthday; it is a celebration of a mindset. Dr. Bose demonstrated that one courageous decision can transform an entire industry and create opportunities for generations of young people. Through initiatives such as Bhartiya Sahas, we encourage every student to believe in their own ideas, challenge conventions and become creators of India's future. Hospitality today is no longer just about jobs instead it is about leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation."

Empowering Future Entrepreneurs

One of the key highlights of Bhartiya Sahas Divas was the Bhartiya Sahas initiative, a unique platform that encourages students to transform innovative business ideas into viable entrepreneurial ventures.

Inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, the initiative provides students an opportunity to conceptualise original hospitality businesses from innovative food concepts and sustainable products to food trucks and technology-enabled ventures. Students pitch their ideas before mentors and prospective investors, much like an entrepreneurial showcase, with promising concepts receiving guidance and financial support.

IIHM campuses pan India participated in the initiative, with IIHM Bangalore securing the First Runner-up position, reflecting the institution's growing culture of innovation and enterprise.

Nil Waste Kitchen: Sustainability Begins in the Kitchen

In keeping with Dr. Bose's vision of responsible hospitality, IIHM also organised the ‘Nil Waste Kitchen’ initiative during World Environment Week (June 1-5), promoting sustainable culinary practices and responsible consumption across all its campuses.

The week-long programme included a sustainability exposure visit to an award-winning hotel, a Nil Waste Mocktail Competition, a Best Out of Waste challenge, AI-assisted sustainable menu presentations and culminated in the Nil Waste Kitchen Competition on World Environment Day.

Students demonstrated how commonly discarded food components including potato peels, apple peels, onion skins, papaya seeds, coriander stems and roots, lemon zest and other kitchen by-products can be transformed into nutritious and innovative dishes, significantly reducing food waste while enhancing culinary creativity.

The competition witnessed participation from IIHM campuses across India, while nearly10 international countries joined virtually, making it a global celebration of sustainable gastronomy.

Future Leaders Driving Sustainable Hospitality

The Nil Waste Kitchen initiative was led by IIHM's Future Leader inductees pan India. Explaining the significance of the initiative, Ms. Ayushi Sanyal, Rooms Division Faculty, Future Leader Inductee IIHM Bangalore, said, "Nil Waste Kitchen demonstrates that sustainability begins with everyday choices in our kitchens. Every peel, stem, seed and root have value if we choose to look at it differently. By teaching students to maximise every ingredient, we are nurturing chefs who are not only creative but also environmentally responsible. Our objective is to build a culture where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand."

The initiative also serves as a precursor to the sustainability themes that IIHM plans to further strengthen during future editions of the Young Chef Olympiad (YCO).

Carrying Forward a Vision

Through Bhartiya Sahas Divas and Nil Waste Kitchen, IIHM has reinforced its commitment to nurturing professionals who are courageous enough to innovate, responsible enough to lead sustainably and confident enough to create opportunities for themselves and society.
