BMW Is Official Partner Of The Fifth Kochi-Muziris Biennale. At Kochi

* BMW Art Talk “Art in India: From Collecting to Collective Action”.

Since its very first edition in 2012, BMW has been official partner of Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB). The fifth biennale opened on December 12, 2022 with over 200 projects spread across heritage properties and warehouses, galleries and public spaces across Fort Kochi, Mattancherry, and Ernakulam on India’s southwestern coast. The central exhibition “In Our Veins Flow Ink and Fire” curated by Singaporean artist Shubigi Rao will run until April 10, 2023 featuring 90 artists and over 40 new commissions in historic Aspinwall House, Pepper House, and Anand Warehouse in Fort Kochi.

“As we await you in Fort Kochi, for the fifth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, we acknowledge change – a recalibration of our lives post the pandemic as well as at the foundation and Biennale as we gear for another decade, having just turned ten this year. We are optimistic, learning from Shubigi Rao’s vision for 'In Our Veins Flow Ink and Fire’ – of how artists navigate the realities of their conditions and hold hope with their creative intelligence and humour”, notes Bose Krishnamachari, President of Kochi Biennale Foundation.

BMW Art Talk: “Art in India: From Collecting to Collective Action”

To celebrate the fifth edition of Kochi-Muziris Biennale as official partner, the BMW Art Talk was held on the morning of December 13 at 11.30 AM followed by a lunch at Brunton Boatyard. Shubigi Rao (Curator of KMB 2022-23) and Aarti Lohia (Patron and Trustee KBF) were in conversation with Dr Thomas Girst (Head of BMW Group Cultural Engagement) on the topic of “Art in India: From Collecting to Collective Action”.

Programmes and Exhibitions – Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2022-23

Founded in 2010, the Kochi Biennale Foundation (KBF) was started by artists for artists, with the intention to bring contemporary art and ideas from across the world to South Asia. Situated in Fort Kochi, an island not far away from Muziris, the ancient port on the maritime silk route, the site was a nod to both a history of trade and cultural contamination, and a locus for global, cutting-edge contemporary art. This year, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, turns ten. While it is a moment to celebrate, it has also been a time of deep reflection.

Shubigi Rao, curator of KMB 2022-23, statement:

“Returning after a gap of four years, the fifth edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale examines how we survive, through song, materiality, joy, humour, and through language, whether written, verbal, and oral. After the states of fear, trauma and uncertain limbo of the pandemic years, it may seem strange to call for joy. Where is this optimism? Perhaps we can sense it more tangibly in artistic and collective work, especially in regional or particular contexts and forms, of the artists gathered here, in this Biennale. These artists find their counterparts across the world, with work that includes questions like the possibly redemptive and revolutionary power of practice beyond the market. We see this reflected in growing investigative methods in cultural work that directly excavate and implicate the monetisation of everything — whether environment, activism, crisis, knowledge production and access, global capital flows and inequities. Our co-mingled virtual futures are not mere outcomes of the social isolation of the last two years. We are inextricable from the transmission of knowledge, ideas and capital, and so too are we subject to neoliberal infiltration and control. Implicated now is the concept of nation and inviolability of borders, a pernicious myth that denies the diffusion of languages and ideas, of storytelling and sharing. Grief, anger, resistance and story are all present here. We can be messy in our attempts to remake or reshape our world in our struggles for equity, but rather than inchoate, these are nonconformist compositions, songs of new making. In the face of capriciousness and volatility, against all odds, this Biennale thrums with the power of storytelling as strategy, of the transgressive potency of ink, and transformative fire of satire and song.”

BMW Group India Cultural Engagement.

The company has been absorbing a significant portion of the increased costs, but the steep rise in overall input costs has compelled it to pass on some proportion through this minimal price hike.

Kasturba Medical College Holds National-Level Medical Symposium To Lay Out An Action Plan For Comprehensive Medical Care

Kasturba Medical College, Manipal in collaboration with India – Doctors Without Borders/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), the Centre for Clinical and innovative forensics and supported by Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences organized a two-day national-level medical symposium on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

The symposium focused on establishing a survivor-centric model of care across India. Specialists in the field of sexual and gender-based violence, including senior medical faculty (forensic medicine, gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry), lawyers, and women’s rights activists highlighted the need for better policies and practices to mitigate the structural and systemic deterrents which hinder survivors’ access to medical and psychological care. These include issues such as mandatory police reporting for POCSO, lack of holistic medical education and training among healthcare workers, prejudiced media narratives, and deficiencies in health-seeking behavior among survivors due to a lack of knowledge and awareness.

Professor B N Gangadhar, Former Director of NIMHANS, Bangalore, was the Guest of Honour, and also emphasized the need for collaborative care and training of doctors in this area. Dr. Achal Gulati, President of The Ethics and Medical Registration Board of the National Medical Council, was also the Guest of Honour at the inauguration, stressed the fact that Policies have to be formed such that Existing barriers are recognized and overcome.

Senior Advocate from the Supreme court of India, Ms. Vrinda Grover said, “Despite the amendments in the law, the bias and prejudices persist even among medical professionals and police personnel while examining the survivors. In terms of public perception, cognizance is quicker when bodily injuries are significant. However, the majority of cases of sexual and gender-based violence in the country do not involve grave injuries but the trauma and damage still need to be addressed as seriously. A woman or a girl child’s body should not be seen just as a piece of evidence but from a humane perspective of care.”

M.D. Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor, MAHE, Manipal said, “There were several news reports that incidents of sexual and gender-based violence increased manifold during the pandemic. But there is a dearth of proper insight and evidence on the issue as a whole. It is symposia like these that will fill in this gap and will lay out the roadmap for revision of existing national policies.”

Dr Himanshu M., Medical Coordinator, Doctors Without Borders, India said, “According to the National and Family Health Survey of 2015, only 5 among 10,000 survivors of sexual and gender-based violence seek medical care and this happens even though it causes both short and long-term health consequences. We as MSF have been advocating for reforms and we believe these should be led by the health sector and academia.”

The presentations during the symposium emphasized healthcare access barriers faced by women across age groups and economic strata – especially women who are survivors of domestic violence and intimate partner violence. Women’s rights activists also highlighted the access issues in terms of psychological and legal aid for vulnerable populations such as women with disabilities and the LGBTQ community.

Dr Jagdeesh Reddy, Professor, and Head, of the Department of Forensic Medicine, Vydehi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Bangalore said, “Multiple guidelines have been issued by the government of India on the subject of sexual and gender-based violence but there are drawbacks in the implementation thereof. There is a need for in-depth research on the issue so that we can make robust policies based on our evidence and not from western countries.”

Dr. H S Ballal, Pro chancellor, MAHE, opined that awareness needs to be created, especially in rural India about the issue, since the majority of the Indian population is from rural areas and Dr. Sharath K Rao, Dean, Kasturba Medical College Manipal welcomed the gathering, and Dr Vinod Nayak, Professor of forensic medicine proposed the vote of thanks.

The symposium formed multidisciplinary working groups which deliberated and came up with a policy action plan and recommendations, which would be presented to the decision-makers and concerned governmental authorities, to help them understand the existing barriers to providing patient-centric care to SGBV survivors and make the required policy changes.

Adidas Reveals Al Hilm – The Official Match Ball For Semifinals And Final Of The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

·         Al Hilm, which translates as “The Dream” in Arabic and features a unique graphic design, will be the official ball for the semifinals and final and follows on from the Official Match Ball of the group stages, Al Rihla

·         Like Al Rihla, the Al Hilm Official Match Ball being played with on the field of play features ‘Connected Ball’ technology – an unprecedented innovation which has proved a great success in making semi-automated offside decisions faster and more accurate during this

·         World Cup Al Hilm is available on http://www.adidas.co.in/al-hilm-pro-football/HC0437.html as of today, December 11th, 2022

adidas reveals Al Hilm – the Official Match Ball  http://www.adidas.co.in/al-hilm-pro-football/HC0437.html  for the semifinals and final of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. Al Hilm, which translates as “The Dream” in Arabic, follows on from the Official Match Ball of the group stages, Al Rihla, which translates as “The Journey”.

Both balls feature the same technology, engineered to support the highest game speeds as they travel faster in flight than any other World Cup ball. Al Hilm is revealed with a unique graphic design, befitting of an occasion as historic as the final matches of a FIFA World Cup™.

The design is set on a textured gold base color which features a subtle triangular pattern, drawing inspiration from the sparkling deserts of the region that surround the city, the color of the FIFA World Cup™ trophy, and the pattern of the Qatar flag. Bold red accents complement the graphic, reflecting both the generative architecture of Qatar, and once again, the country’s flag.

The ball encapsulates its namesake, Al Hilm – “The Dream”, as it connects to the twilight hours, where the red sky meets the desert sand at dusk – a time when dreams are set to come true under the floodlights of the Lusail Stadium – the stage for the Final.

“Al Hilm represents a beacon of light on the power of sport and football to bring the world together. Millions will tune in from almost every country around the globe, united by their passion for the game. We wish all teams involved in the final stages of the tournament the best of luck as they compete on the largest stage that football has to offer” said Nick Craggs, General Manager – Football, adidas.

Designed from the inside out using data from rigorous testing in adidas labs, wind tunnels, and on-pitch, Al Hilm features the same new panel shape and surface textures introduced for Al Rihla:

·         CTR-CORE: An innovative core within the ball that is tuned to support fast, precise play with maximum shape and air retention

·         SPEEDSHELL: The ball’s polyurethane (PU) skin featuring micro and macro textures and a 20-piece panel shape

Utilizing the latest technological advances in ball design, Al Hilm includes the same unprecedented adidas ‘Connected Ball’ technology as Al Rihla, which has proven invaluable in helping match officials making faster and more accurate decisions during this World Cup.

Combined with player position data, the innovation offers Video Assistant Referees instant data, to help optimize decision-making for a seamless fan experience. By combining the ball tracking data captured by sensors within the ball and applying artificial intelligence, the new technology provides an automated offside alert to the VAR team.

The ball was also designed with the environment at its heart - all components have been carefully considered, and Al Hilm is the first World Cup semifinals and final ball made using only water-based inks and glues.

The adidas Al Hilm drops today, 11th of December and will be exclusively available via adidas.com football balls http://www.adidas.co.in/al-hilm-pro-football/HC0437.html  and adidas retail stores.
