Building Your Child’s Bone Health From An Early Age Is Essential

Bones are the foundation for a child’s growing body. Strong bone development during childhood lays the foundation for good bone health throughout life. They provide structural support for the body, protect vital organs, and store essential minerals[i].

Today, as foods have become more accessible outside homes -- at malls, restaurants, and through online food delivery, parents’ job of ensuring that their toddler is receiving the right nutrition has become tougher. While this kind of “mall” food may satiate hunger for the short-term, it is typically deficient in essential micronutrients, which in turn leads to undernourished health. Both macronutrients are important for strong bones and a healthy child. Dr. Ganesh Kadhe, Director, Medical and Scientific Affairs, Abbott’s Nutrition business shares how parents can ensure good bone health for their children through right nutrition & habits:

Nutrients for Strong Bones: A simple way of avoiding micronutrient deficiencies is to consider the ingredients, rather than the complete dish. The ingredients must have the right balance of both macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are nutrients that are required in large quantities like protein, carbohydrate, fats – and can be found in foods such as cereals, millets, pulses, milk, oils, meat, fish, poultry. Micronutrients are nutrients that are required in small quantities like iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium, vitamins, and selenium – which can be found in fruits, green leafy vegetables, nuts and oilseeds, milk, meat, fish, poultry). Food combinations of egg sandwich with a side of fresh fruit or adding PediaSure powder in your child’s glass of milk or making a smoothie will meet both macronutrient and micronutrient needs in children.

Adapt high-calcium foods: Calcium is one of the primary building blocks in bone development. It is essential in providing strength and structure to the skeleton and should be consumed in higher amounts during the preteen and teenage years as that time is crucial for bone growth. Good sources of calcium include dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt, as well as green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, and broccoli, calcium-fortified plant-based milks, and calcium-fortified breakfast cereals, bread, and orange juice, combined with a balanced nutritious diet, can support children's growth and development

Exercising frequently: While exercise benefits people of all ages, young bones respond even more to exercise than adult bones. Children and adolescents who exercise regularly have higher bone mass. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children aged 5–17 should accumulate at least 60 minutes of moderate- to vigorous intensity physical activity daily and that additional physical activity would provide additional health benefits.[ii] Ideal exercises include running, jumping, ball games, competitive sports and dancing

Encouraging Outdoor Playtime: With the rise of technology and indoor entertainment options, your child may prefer to spend more time indoors. However, parents must encourage their children to spend time outdoors, as it provides numerous health benefits, including building strong bones. In addition, sunlight exposure is a natural source of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium and supports bone health. Outdoor activities such as running, jumping, and playing sports can help stimulate bone growth and improve bone density. By making outdoor playtime a part of your child's daily routine, you can help support their overall health and well-being[iii]

Ensure proper sleep: Sleep is an essential aspect of overall health and well-being, and it plays a critical role in the development of strong bones in children. Sleep duration of less than 8 hours may impair bone mass accrual, particularly during periods of rapid growth[iv] Parents must ensure their children get proper sleep. Encouraging winding down before bedtime, limiting caffeine and sugar intake, along with promoting physical activity during the day is key.

India’s Residential Demand Increased 14.2%, Supply Grew 1.9% YoY Reveals “Magicbricks PropIndex” Report (Jan-March 2023)

* After recording a marginal decline of 2.5% last quarter, residential demand increased 3.2% QoQ, showing market resilience

* With demand and supply mismatch, pan-India average rate increased 13.9% YoY

Continuing on the path of resilience and overall growth, India’s residential demand increased 14.2% and supply grew 1.9% YoY, observed “Magicbricks’ PropIndex Report” for January-March 2023. According to the report, after recording a marginal decline of 2.5% last quarter, residential demand (searches) increased 3.2% QoQ led by Ahmedabad (21.4%), Bengaluru (10.3%) and Pune (7%).

The report also observed that while the pan India residential supply increased 1.9% YoY, it recorded a marginal decline of 0.9% QoQ as new project launches slowed down, and the focus is on selling existing inventory. However, cities including Noida (20.8%) and Greater Noida (17.6%) demonstrated an increase in residential supply (QoQ). As a result of demand and supply mismatch, the average pan India property rate increased 13.9% YoY and 2.3% QoQ.

Elaborating on the trends, Sudhir Pai, CEO, Magicbricks commented, “Several multilateral agencies have projected that the Indian economy will grow by 6-7% in FY’ 23, despite the global slowdown. The recent Union Budget has also introduced several encouraging initiatives, including substantial allocations to PMAY and UIDF, which have set the wheels in motion for facilitating employment opportunities and infrastructure development. Given the under-served demand for home-ownership in the affordable and mid-range segment, we are optimistic about the growth trajectory for residential demand in the coming quarters as well. We anticipate that the market will stabilise, supplemented by new projects and expedited delivery of under-construction properties, which will open up new avenues for investment and innovation.”

Goa, Portugal Can Build On Historic Links Through Curated Tourism Packages: Turismo de Portugal Official

Goa and Portugal can build on their historic connection and strengthen cooperation between the two regions by curating “special tourism packages for citizens” of both countries, according to Head of Training and Education at Turismo de Portugal, Ana Paula Pais, who was in Goa recently to participate in an international student exchange programme.

Pais, who represents the federal tourism authority in Portugal, also said that the delegation of Portuguese students and faculty got to learn and understand the cultures and traditions of people living in Goa, during their four week-long intensive exchange programme.

“We can improve promotion based on our historical connections, create specific packages and have more information. Initiatives like the one the Indian Minister of Tourism recently had with our government during our national tourism fair in Lisbon are very important to strengthen cooperation between the two countries,” Pais said.

The Portuguese delegation consisting of 12 students, drawn from 12 hospitality institutes in the Portugal, was hosted by the V.M.Salgaocar Institute of International Hospitality Education (VMSIIHE), as part of the ‘Collaborative International Training and Education Program’ with Turismo de Portugal, in order to acquaint them with Goan hospitality, cuisine, and culture. Students from the Raia-based institute would participate in the second leg of the exchange programme, which is scheduled to be held in Portugal soon.

The four-week intensive programme included field trips, demo sessions with in-house faculty and visits to culturally significant Goan sites, including a spice farm, Dudhsagar waterfalls, Bhagwan Mahavir sanctuary, while also enjoying a traditional meal at a local temple in Ponda. The field tours also helped the delegation understand traditional businesses like feni production and baking. Members of the delegation also interacted with native tribal representatives to broaden their understanding of co-existing cultures in Goa.

VMSIIHE also conducted demo classes for the members of the delegation, teaching them skills from making Indian breads to understanding the different meats used in the Goan kitchens.

Speaking on the significant and valuable experiences attained through this cultural exchange  program, Head of training and education at Turismo de Portugal, Ana Paula Pais, says “This is an extraordinary programme, which has provided a unique experience for our students, not only in a professional area, which is very important, but especially from a personal perspective. To be a professional of excellence in today's tourism industry, it is essential to have global knowledge about others, about other values, about other cultures, because we want to build an inclusive industry where respect for others and commitment to the preservation of the planet are the central elements.”

According to Prof. Irfan Mirza, Director and Principal of VMSIIHE, the programme gave the Portuguese delegation a chance to taste the cuisines of the country and respective states and learn and understand the culture of a foreign country.

“The exchange students got to learn and understand the cultures and traditions of people living in India. We also had a chance to understand the culture that they brought with them. Thus after going back to Portugal, the students can share with their families and friends their valuable experiences and a new perspective of Goa's rich heritage and culture,” Mirza said.

BharatPe Group Partners With Women Entrepreneurship Platform To Foster Women Entrepreneurship In India

* The partnership will focus on the development of a first-of-its-kind aggregator platform for women entrepreneurs, with the objective of providing access to peer support, mentorship, networking channels and a wide range of learning resources.

BharatPe Group, one of India’s leading names in fintech industry, today announced its partnership with Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) with the objective of enabling women entrepreneurs across India in their journeys of self-reliance and business growth. The partnership aims to build a robust ecosystem that brings together women entrepreneurs from different parts of India and equips them with the required domain knowledge as well as the financial and technical know-how needed to fulfill their business goals. The core focus area will be facilitating the development of a first-of-its kind aggregator platform that gives access to peer support, mentorship, networking channels and a wide range of learning resources.

Launched under ‘BharatPe Cares’, a corporate social responsibility initiative by BharatPe Group, this partnership is in line with the Group’s brand purpose to empower lives through inclusive, innovative and reliable fintech solutions. This specific initiative rests under the CSR program of PAYBACK, a BharatPe company.

According to the sixth economic census by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, women comprise only 13.76% of the total entrepreneurs in India, which is 8.05 million out of the total 58.5 million entrepreneurs. The figure indicates that women entrepreneurs need to be empowered so they can follow their dreams. With this in mind, the partnership aims to address the constraining barriers faced by women entrepreneurs across the landscape in India and facilitate a level playing field wherein women enjoy equal opportunities for growth.

Speaking on this announcement, Nalin Negi, CFO and interim CEO, BharatPe, said, “While India is a startup and unicorn hub, the share of women entrepreneurs in the country still remains low. I strongly believe that there is a huge untapped potential for unlocking entrepreneurship among women in India. WEP has an impeccable body of work towards driving women entrepreneurship in the country, and we are proud to partner with them on our shared vision of enabling women entrepreneurs to catalyze the growth of their businesses.”

Nalin adds, ‘As a homegrown fintech, our regular engagement with women solopreneurs and small business owners has helped us understand the challenges faced from their lens-  the most important being lack of access to financial know-how, networking channels, mentorship and fundraising opportunities. Also, as per an industry report, women entrepreneurs in India can generate 150-170 million jobs by 2030, which is more than 25% of the new jobs required for the entire working-age population. Thus, driving women entrepreneurship would boost the economy through job creation, and is critical to building India as a US$ 5 trillion economy. Our partnership with WEP is aimed at facilitating the development of a plug-and-play digital infrastructure to address the existing gaps and aid the growth of women entrepreneurs.”

Commenting on the partnership, Anna Roy, Mission Director, WEP, said, “The entrepreneurial ecosystem in India is thriving but women-led businesses still need a lot of support to help scale businesses, and more so due to social biases. Women entrepreneurs across the country face an unfair disadvantage due to exclusion from networking channels and mentorship opportunities. Women entrepreneurship platform is a public private initiative that aims at providing a continuum of support to women entrepreneurs by leveraging the network of various stakeholders who are part of the ecosystem. The idea is to make these connect seamlessly across board, overcome information asymmetry and empower women by giving them the right information at the right time. With the partnership with BharatPe Group, WEP adds another important stakeholder to this vast and growing network of partner organizations that will help combine the effort of both the industry players towards leveling the playing field for women entrepreneurs as well as expanding the funnel to get more women to start their own enterprises.”

BharatPe will also facilitate the development of learning sources curated around specific sectors to support capability development and equip women entrepreneurs with the required domain knowledge to scale their businesses.
