Youth Of Bangalore, Karnataka Take The Lead In Changing Road Behavior

Engaged over 2400 school students & staff members to encourage a shift in mindset towards road safety

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) brought a wave of awareness in Bangalore, Karnataka through road safety awareness campaign organized in PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya – IISC (Yeswanthpur) and PM Shri Kendriya Vidyalaya -2 (Jalahalli East) where participants turned into road safety champions, steering conversations around mindful riding, smart choices and shared responsibility. The campaign engaged over 2400 participants led by HMSI’s trained road safety instructors.

While India continues to make rapid strides in mobility and infrastructure, the growing traffic density has amplified the need for not just skilled riders, but also responsible ones.

Designed to be as dynamic as the youth it engaged, the campaign featured interactive learning through games, quizzes, sessions on two-wheeler safety, traffic rules and responsible road behaviour. From trying on helmet and the right way to understanding blind spots, all the participants got a hands-on taste of what it means to ride safe and stay alert. The message was simple and clear: Safety begins with a mindset change.

Road safety was discussed beyond rules and penalties. It was presented as a life skill- one that could protect not just themselves, but everyone around them.

This initiative is a part of HMSI’s broader effort to instill road safety behaviour early. By focusing on changing mindset, HMSI hopes to create a ripple effect- where everyone becomes an ambassador for change, influencing their families, peers and communities. This mission goes beyond an event. It’s about planting the idea that road safety isn’t a one-time lesson- it’s a lifelong habit and when that habit takes root early, the roads tomorrow look a lot different from the roads today.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India’s CSR commitment towards Road Safety:

In 2021, Honda announced its global vision statement for the year 2050 where it will strive for zero traffic collision fatalities involving Honda motorcycles and automobiles. In India HMSI is working in line with this vision and the Government of India direction of reducing fatalities to half by 2030.

One critical aspect of achieving this goal is developing a positive mindset towards road safety in our children by the year 2030 and continuing to educate them thereafter. Road safety education at schools and colleges is not only to create awareness but to introduce a safety culture in young minds and transform them to be the road safety ambassadors. It empowers future generations to become responsible and significantly contribute to a safer society.

HMSI wants to be a company that Society wants to exist and is strongly focusing on spreading Road safety awareness to all sections of society with unique ideas catering to each segment from school kids to corporates and society at large.

HMSI’s set of skilled safety instructors conduct daily programs at our 10 adopted traffic training parks (TTP) across India and 6 Safety Driving Education Centers (SDEC) to make road safety education accessible to every part of society, and the initiative has already reached over 10 million Indians. HMSI’s National Road Safety Awareness program made learning fun yet scientific through:

SCIENTIFICALLY DEVISED LEARNING MODULE: Honda’s skilled instructors set the foundation with theory sessions on road signs & markings, driver’s duties on road, riding gear & posture explanation and safe riding etiquettes.

  1. PRACTICAL LEARNING: A special training activity on Honda’s virtual riding simulator was executed for all to experience over 100 possible dangers on road before actual riding.

  2. INTERACTIVE SESSION: Participants were given danger prediction training known as Kiken Yosoku Training (KYT) which helps in enhancing rider/driver’s sensitivity to danger and ensures safe driving behaviour on roads.

  3. EXISTING DRIVERS HONING RIDING SKILLS: Students & school staff members who are already existing riders tested & honed their riding skills through slow riding activities and riding on narrow planks.

HMSI also recently launched its innovative digital road safety learning platform, E-Gurukul, this E-Gurukul platform offers training modules tailored for three specific age groups from 5 years till 18 years ensuring a comprehensive approach towards road safety. Currently the modules are available in multiple languages like Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and English—to ensure inclusivity and regional relevance and E-Gurukul can be accessed at egurukul.honda.hmsi.in. The platform supports live streaming or downloading, and multilingual modules to ensure accessibility across diverse regions. The launch of E-Gurukul is part of HMSI’s ongoing efforts to empower children, educators, and dealers to champion safe road practices. The initiative will expand to cover schools in every state, promoting road safety education tailored to different age groups. Any school interested in accessing this information can contact Safety.riding@honda.hmsi.in.

Rationalise GST On Air Conditioners & Televisions - ICEA Calls For Reduction From 28% To 18% To Unlock Scale, Affordability

India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), representing India’s premier electronics and mobile manufacturers, has urged the Government of India to rationalise GST on air conditioners and televisions from the current 28% to 18%. ICEA GST correction in these categories is vital to stimulate domestic demand, affordability, and global competitiveness.

In his Independence Day address, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced next generation GST reforms focused on rate rationalisation and relief for everyday items. ICEA urges that AC and televisions be treated as essential durables (common-man items) in this exercise.

“Air conditioners and televisions are no longer luxury goods, they are essential consumer durables that define modern quality of life. Keeping them in the highest GST slab alongside sin goods is inconsistent and counterproductive. Rationalising GST to 18% will make them affordable for millions, expand domestic demand, and create the foundation for scale-led global competitiveness,” said Mr. Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman, ICEA.

Why Correction is Urgent

  • Air Conditioners: India’s penetration is barely ~8%, among the lowest globally. Despite this vast untapped demand, ACs continue to face a 28% GST – far higher than the 8–15% range seen internationally. This makes ACs costlier by 8–10%, constraining adoption. Correcting GST to 18% will unlock domestic demand and establish India as a competitive hub for global exports.

  • Televisions: India shipped 12.1 million TVs in 2024, with smart TVs forming 91% of sales. The average household preference has shifted to 43–50 inches, yet these sizes are penalised with 28% GST. This fuels grey markets, discourages scale production, and slows formal adoption. A uniform 18% rate for all TVs would directly curb grey channels, boost formal sales, and incentivise domestic display manufacturing.

A National Priority

Correcting GST on these products will deliver a double dividend: it will ease the burden on consumers while directly sustaining India’s manufacturing base. Affordable ACs and TVs will broaden access for households and rural users, while rising domestic demand will anchor production growth. This step is vital for scaling towards the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s reform agenda, achieving the USD 500 billion electronics manufacturing vision by FY31, and advancing Digital India through universal access to modern consumer appliances.

Broader Impact

  • Affordability & Inclusion: Lowering GST will directly benefit middle- and lower-income households.

  • Parity with Other Durables: Refrigerators, washing machines, and microwaves – all taxed at 18% – are comparable essentials.

  • Boost to Manufacturing & Exports: Higher demand drives economies of scale, the foundation of global competitiveness.

  • Alignment with Reforms: Supports GST rationalisation, slab reduction, and long-term sustainability.

“GST rationalisation for air conditioners, and televisions is essential to sustain affordability, stimulate domestic demand, and drive the next phase of India’s electronics revolution. Just as supportive policies made mobiles a global success story, correcting GST across these key categories will anchor India’s $500 billion electronics manufacturing vision by FY31,” added Mr. Mohindroo.
