The Role Exercise Plays To Manage Type 1 Diabetes Better

Parenting is a journey filled with joys, challenges, and boundless opportunities for growth. When your child is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, this adventure takes on a unique twist. Type 1 diabetes, characterized by the immune system's impact on the pancreas's insulin-producing cells, demands constant attention to blood sugar levels. However, it's crucial to recognize that your youngster can live a full, healthy life with Type 1 diabetes. The key lies in focusing on aspects of managing the condition that ensure your child’s overall well-being, such as by prioritizing daily exercise.

Dr. Kavita Bhat, Lead Consultant Pediatric Endocrinology, Aster CMI Hospitals, Bangalore  commented, “Incorporating physical activity into the daily routine of a child with Type 1 diabetes is important for their health and well-being. For parents, integrating a structured exercise regimen of 30 minutes will not only positively impact their child’s blood sugar control, but also enhance their insulin sensitivity and support a healthier lifestyle. Helping a child navigate their diabetes journey can also be made hassle-free by embracing advancements that simplify diabetes management. For instance, parents can utilize continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, measuring glucose levels all day and night. These offer real-time data on how blood sugar levels respond to factors like meals, physical activity, and insulin doses.”

Dr. Prashanth Subramanian, Head of Medical Affairs, Emerging Asia & India, Diabetes Care, Abbott added, “Managing diabetes can be challenging for anyone – and in the case of children, parents play an important role to take care of their kid’s health. To empower them and help make the process of diabetes management less complicated, tech-led developments in the form of CGM devices prove useful. These are minimally invasive and painlessly track a child’s glucose levels. More so, through seamless integration with smartphones, they create a digital connection so that parents can effortlessly monitor and stay up-to-date on information in real-time, through data and visual graphs on sudden blood sugar spikes or lows. This is a valuable tool, empowering parents to calculate precise insulin doses for elevated glucose levels, while easing concerns and prompting greater confidence.”

In today's plugged-in world, physical activity can be tough to incorporate into your child's life. Luckily, the following game plan – with four simple steps – may make it easier to ensure your child is both healthy and moving:

Check blood sugar regularly

First, even before putting on your running shoes, check your glucose levels. Monitoring helps in determining the next dosage of insulin to be taken. You can do this easily with continuous glucose monitoring devices like FreeStyle Libre. Such devices also link to mobile phone apps, which give you access to your readings. This can let you observe any impact of stress or other lifestyle behaviours on your child’s health, which can lead to them making healthier decisions and spending more time in range (70–180 mg/dL).

Find fun activities to help you stay active

The easiest way to keep kids active is to find exercises that interest them. Establishing a routine by signing them up for a team sport helps. Activities could also include riding bicycles, dancing, playing cricket, or enjoying games like kho kho or kabaddi with friends or family.

To avoid letting kids feel singled out and like they need to exercise because of their illness, make it a family affair. It's a fun way to bond, and it keeps everyone in shape. Also, make sure that any activity is paired with adequate sleep, because rest is important for children with Type 1 diabetes.

3. Always have snacks on standby

To prepare for exercise, people are recommended to have roughly 15 grams of carbohydrates (such as in the form of a ground nut, chikki, fruits like bananas) before being active if their blood glucose levels are lower than 100 mg/dl — especially if your child plans to be moving around for 30 minutes or more.

However, sometimes, the pre-workout snack isn't enough to keep sugar levels from dropping. It's smart to have a snack kit on hand even when not exercising, especially as you never know when the need to be active may strike.

4. Keep a diabetes journal

You won't get it right every time — and that's fine. The important thing is to learn from each experience, such as understanding how your child's sugar levels react to different foods and activities. Especially when your child is first starting a new exercise routine, you should be checking frequently. Document their blood glucose levels, the food they eat, and the exercises they engage in, with time stamps. This way, you'll be able to adapt your game plan based on what's working and what's not, whether that means switching up snack time or rescheduling a morning jog or an evening walk. Always consult a doctor before making changes to your child's regimen or in case you have questions.

Remember, kids with diabetes aren’t limited by their condition. With tips like these, you can easily incorporate activity into their lives while their blood sugar levels are at bay – and get the whole family moving at the same time.

Emcure Pharma Teams Up With Moms To Normalise Breastfeeding In Public

*   (Public Awareness Campaign to Mark World Breastfeeding Week)

*   Normalize breastfeeding in public spaces, dispel related taboos, and spark meaningful conversation

*   Partnering with mom to promote the message of breastfeeding acceptance

*   Moms will hold “Breastfeeding Zones” signs at various public locations

*   Create a ripple effect, encouraging more people to support breastfeeding mothers

*   Activity in 9 cities - Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Coimbatore, Kolkata, Siliguri, Vadodara, Mumbai and Delhi

Emcure Pharmaceuticals, an Indian pharma company with a strong focus on women’s healthcare segment, initiated a public awareness campaign during World Breastfeeding Week. Through this activity, Emcure aims to normalize breastfeeding in public spaces, dispel related taboos, and spark conversations to support mothers in feeling secure and at ease when nursing their kids in public.

WHO and UNICEF recommend breastfeeding for infants within the first hour of birth and exclusively for the first 6 months of their life. Breastmilk is the ideal food for infants. It is safe, clean and contains antibodies, which help protect against many common childhood illnesses. Breastfeeding is one of the most natural aspects of a woman's life, but many mothers face significant challenges when nursing their children in public. Social stigma and a lack of supportive environment often discourage mothers from breastfeeding outside their homes.

As part of the of World Breastfeeding Week activities, Emcure will collaborate with moms who will share their perspectives on public breastfeeding and the importance of normalizing it. The campaign will feature videos capturing intimate and loving moments between mothers and their babies while breastfeeding in public spaces such as malls, cafes, parks, and streets. Additionally, it will involve moms holding "Breastfeeding Zone" signs in various public locations, making a statement that every place should be a safe breastfeeding zone. The activity will be undertaken in 9 different locations across India.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Namita Thapar, Whole-time Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals Ltd, said, “Breastfeeding in public places is often frowned upon even in urban areas. The unwanted and constant stare makes women feel unsafe and uncomfortable. We hope to sensitize people to create a comfortable and welcoming environment for mothers to nourish their babies without hesitation. Our goal is to promote a culture of acceptance and support for nursing mothers. We believe that every mother deserves the right to breastfeed whenever and wherever her baby needs, and we are committed to making this a reality."

This activity highlights Emcure’s long-standing commitment to women’s healthcare and community well-being. By addressing an important societal issue, Emcure continues to demonstrate its dedication to improving the lives of women and families.

Doctors at Apollo Cancer Centre Perform Robotic -Assisted Surgery To Remove 1.13 kg Adrenal Tumour From Middle Aged Man

Apollo Cancer Centre, one of the top super speciality hospitals in India, performed a robot-assisted surgery to remove an extremely large adrenal myelolipoma (a non-cancerous tumour of the adrenal gland) measuring 18 cm and weighing over a kilogram to save a 49-year-old male patient. This complex robot-assisted surgery was performed by Dr. Ragavan N, Senior Consultant in Uro-Oncology, and his team from Apollo Cancer Centre using the da Vinci Xi robotic platform by Intuitive.

The patient was diagnosed with a large adrenal tumour, 18 cm in size, significantly larger than the average tumour, which typically measures 5 to 7 cm. Unlike standard cases, where an adrenal tumour sits on top of the kidney, this tumour encroached behind the right kidney, compressing the IVC (Inferior Vena Cava), as well as a significant part of the liver. The pre-operative workup indicated that the tumour was likely a myelolipoma. The doctors at Apollo Cancer Centre decided to proceed with robot-assisted adrenalectomy due to the significant risks posed by the size and position of the tumour.

Commenting on the complexity of this case, Dr. Ragavan N, Senior Consultant in Uro-Oncology at Apollo Cancer Centre, said, “In open surgery, handling such a large tumour can pose significant challenges. The soft and fragile nature of adrenal tumours, especially myelolipoma, which is composed of fat cells, can increase the risk of rupturing the tumour during manipulation. Even though the pre-operative evaluation suggested a myelolipoma, we were concerned about the probability of malignancy. Any rupture of the tumour (especially if it was malignant) could have led to metastasis (spread of cancer cells). Therefore, the decision to perform robotic-assisted surgery with the da Vinci system was crucial because of the dexterity, precision, and stability offered by the robotic arms, which enhanced our ability to lift and remove the tumour safely without causing any rupture.”

Expressing his gratitude, the 49-year-old patient said, “I’m extremely thankful to Dr. Ragavan N and the medical team at Apollo Cancer Centre who assisted him during the surgery. They counselled me about the benefits and risks of undergoing robot-assisted surgery and executed the surgery to remove the tumour safely without any complications. Without their support and care, I would not have recovered so quickly and returned to my normal life sooner than I expected.”

Dr. Ragavan N further elaborated, “Considering how obese the patient was (110 kg), the complex position and large size of the tumour, open surgery would have posed immense challenges. Removing such a large tumour would have required a 25 - 30 cm incision, which would have significantly impacted wound healing and recovery time, increasing the risk of developing a hernia. Locating the adrenal vein, a very critical yet extremely small structure, would have been extremely difficult in this case owing to the enormous size of the tumour. The minimally invasive nature of robot-assisted surgery with its 3D vision and dexterity made it easier for us to navigate through the challenges and perform the surgery. The enhanced precision and control offered by robot-assisted surgery minimize the risk and improve patient outcomes.”
