Tata Motors Charts A Green Course For The Future Of Transportation

In the midst of India's urbanisation and a growing focus on sustainable mobility, the shift towards cleaner transportation options has become crucial. With the country moving towards electric and hydrogen cell-based vehicles, there's a pressing need for an interim solution to reduce emissions. Natural gas, recognised as a 'transition fuel,' serves as an ideal bridge. Tata Motors, India’s leading automobile company, is actively contributing to the development of natural gas-powered vehicles. Leveraging their expertise and commitment to innovation, Tata Motors is playing a pivotal role in shaping the transition to sustainable transportation in India.

A Niti Aayog report projects a fourfold increase in trucks on Indian roads by 2050, emphasising the need for a transition to natural gas-based fuels. This shift is critical for environmental, public health and economic sustainability in the Commercial Vehicle industry. India, dedicated to emission reduction and energy security, actively promotes Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). CNG offers economic advantages, potentially reducing India's crude oil import bill. Dedicated to innovation and sustainable transportation solutions, Tata Motors plays a crucial role in promoting the adoption of CNG in the commercial vehicle sector, in line with India's aspirations for a more environmentally friendly and efficient transportation system. As per reports, Karnataka has more than 250 CNG stations, contributing to the widespread accessibility of cleaner fuel options.

India strategically invests in its natural gas infrastructure to support this transition, with plans for 17,000 operational CNG stations by 2030. National initiatives like the gas grid, additional LNG terminals and the SATAT scheme for bio-CNG aim to broaden natural gas access. Incentives such as tax credits and subsidies encourage the adoption of gas-based vehicles. The Government's approval of a new natural gas pricing mechanism further enhances CNG affordability compared to petrol and diesel, marking a significant step in India's sustainable transportation journey.

Mr. Rajesh Kaul, Vice President & Business Head – Trucks, Tata Motors stated that "At Tata Motors, we are at the forefront of the transition to sustainable fuels. With our wide range of CNG-powered commercial vehicles and our commitment to achieving Net Zero Emissions by 2045, we are leading the charge in sustainable logistics. Our showcase of natural gas, electric and hydrogen options at Auto Expo 2023 demonstrates our dedication to shaping the future of transportation. As the demand for CNG-powered vehicles rises, driven by favorable operating economics and increasing availability, we are confident that natural gas will play a crucial role in the industry's journey towards zero-emission vehicles. Together, we are driving towards a greener and more efficient future."

Air India Receives India’s First Airbus A350-900 Aircraft Sporting, New Brand Livery

Air India, India’s leading global airline, today welcomed the first of 20 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, registered VT-JRA, in the airline’s bold new livery, marking a turning point in its ongoing transformation story.

The aircraft arrived at New Delhi at 13:46 Hrs (local time) today from the Airbus facility in Toulouse, France. The delivery flight, operated using a special call sign AI350, was welcomed by Air India representatives. Air India’s Senior Commander Capt. Monika Batra Vaidya, who is among the first few Indian pilots to be trained on A350, was on board as an observer.

Air India leads the way in catalysing the renaissance of Indian aviation, inducting the first new widebody fleet type in India in more than a decade, and thus, becoming the first Indian airline to fly the A350. Air India was also the first Indian airline to have inducted the Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet type in 2012.

Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Air India, said: “This moment marks a red-letter day for all of us at Air India. The A350 is not just metal and engines; it’s the flying embodiment of the relentless efforts of all Air India employees towards our airline’s continuing transformation and of our commitment to setting new benchmarks. It is also, in many ways, a declaration of Indian aviation’s resurgence on the world stage.”

“As a symbol of the new age of flying, the A350 promises a world-class, long-haul travel experience on our non-stop routes, providing an unparallelled level of comfort. Its excellent flight economics and state-of-the-art technology underscore our dedication to commercially successful operations and to achieving our sustainability goals,” Wilson added.

Air India’s A350 will enter commercial service in January 2024, initially operating domestically for crew familiarisation, followed by longer-haul flying to destinations across continents. The schedule of commercial operations with the A350 will be announced in the coming weeks.

Air India’s A350-900 aircraft come in a three-class cabin configuration with 316 seats designed by Collins Aerospace: 28 private Business Class suites with full-flat beds, 24 Premium Economy seats with extra legroom and multiple other differentiating features, and 264 spacious Economy Class seats. All seats on the aircraft feature the latest-generation Panasonic eX3 in-flight entertainment system and HD screens to provide superior flying experience.

The aircraft is first of Air India’s 20 Airbus A350-900 on order, with five more scheduled for deliveries through March 2024. Air India’s firm orders for 250 new aircraft with Airbus include 20 A350-1000.

Earlier this week, the airline started the rollout of its new global brand identity across guest touchpoints, having launched a new consumer-facing website and mobile app. Last week, the airline unveiled its much-anticipated new collection of uniforms for cabin and cockpit crew designed by Indian celebrity couturier, Manish Malhotra. Air India’s cabin crew and pilots will be seen in the new uniforms starting with the entry of service of the A350.
