40% Indians From Tier 3 Cities Say Language Is A Key Motivator As They Plan Their 2023 Travel: Duolingo Language Report 2022

~Indian travellers prefer to learn native language of the destination to indulge in authentic socio-cultural experiences of the country~

Exploring how important a role does the local language of a destination play for Indian travellers while building their travel itineraries, Duolingo (Nasdaq: DUOL) – the world’s most popular language learning app – today released the 2022 Duolingo Language Report in the country.

After 2 years of pandemic induced hiatus, the world is up and running again – this time with extraordinary zeal and passion! Keeping the travel spirits high, the world’s #1 online learning platform, this week launched the ‘Duolingo Language Report’. Embracing YOLO in its truest sense, Indian travellers are once again ready to put on their globetrotting shoes to tick experiences off their bucket list. They no longer seek just touristy experiences and want to travel like a local. Language and culture are interlinked, and you cannot learn one of these without having a clear understanding of the other. Knowing the local language of your destination results in a more personal and richer experience with the native culture!

It is also interesting to note that in a survey conducted by Duolingo, majority of the respondents (40%) belong to tier-3 cities which indicates that language learning is gaining more traction in these cities. Given the huge increase in the discretionary spending capabilities of tier-3 markets across the country, they look at investing more in experiences. Duolingo has also witnessed a huge influx of consumers from tier-2 and tier-3 markets who wish to learn new languages to broaden their horizons.

Commenting on the 2022 edition of the Duolingo Language Report, Country Marketing Manager in India, Karandeep Singh Kapany said, "To help Indian travellers seeking authentic local experiences, wanting to connect with locals in their native, Duolingo has travel specific easy and basic modules. Duolingo enables a smooth and fun language learning process across several languages, and it is encouraging to see Indians willing to invest time and energy in delving deeper and mastering the art of language learning when planning their next trip. We look at promoting language learning as a culture which opens a whole new door of experiences for all our uses.”

Language is an important requisite for making travel plans

Cultural essence of any place is significantly coded in its language. Indian travellers understand this and are becoming more conscious and mindful of their travel choices – of the impact that they leave on the destination and its people. During the survey by Duolingo, about 50% respondents agreed that the primary language of the destination is an important consideration factor for them while making travel decisions. Majority of the respondents (76%) said that relaxation and exploring new cultures act as the primary motivators for international travel in 2023. What can be a better way to experience the cultural diversity of a place than in its local language!

Say Bon Voyage! French tops the charts as the most preferred language for Indian travellers

Being spoken in more than 40 different countries across the globe, it is no surprise that the majority of the respondents (23%) plan to practise and brush up their French speaking skills followed by German, Arabic and Spanish before they venture out to an international travel destination. Most of these respondents (46%) are Gen Z and millennials.

French is the fifth-most spoken language in the world after English, Mandarin, Hindi, and Spanish. It holds the official language status in about 30 countries. Popularly known as the language of culture, knowledge of French enables you to access great works in global art and literature. A little research on the culture of the destination before the trip helps one to be more respectful towards local communities and people.

Time spent on learning a new language is time well spent

47% of the respondents are ready to spend a few days to several weeks’ time to practise a new language before travelling. 20% respondents also said that in the past, they had practised French followed by German and Arabic ahead of their travelling plans. Learning the native language of the destination not only makes travel easier but also is one of the best ways to show respect to the people and local communities there.

Last year, Duolingo’s language report indicated that most of the Indians were keen towards learning Korean due to the influence of pop culture trendsetters including movies, OTT shows and web series.

Shotgun! Language takes a front seat for authentic travel experiences

Indicating that travellers are ready to put in that extra effort at the travel planning stage – 62% of the respondents said that they have practised at least one foreign language ahead of their travelling plans. It is interesting to note that for their future international trips, travellers don’t want to stop at learning just a few basic words and greetings in the destination's language but have an appetite for learning enough to have a simple conversation in the destination's primary language! This contrasts with their past behaviour where they were satisfied with knowing a few keywords and phrases to get around the destination. This change indicates that Indian travellers are leaning towards conscious travel. They want to indulge into socio-cultural experiences of a place in the most authentic way possible.

During the survey by Duolingo, the majority of the respondents (51%) said that they prefer accidentally saying something embarrassing in a new language rather than not interacting with any locals during the trip. And they very well understand that to interact with the natives, knowing their language is extremely important.

Travellers also hold a great amount of respect for the native culture of a place they are travelling to and prefer to show it through their efforts and actions. 71% of them would prefer losing their luggage rather than getting their pronunciation corrected by a local. This indicates that they are ready to spend some extra time on refining their dialect and pronunciation to maintain the decorum of the foreign language.

They also understand that for exploring the depths of the culture and not merely ‘getting by’ the destination, no number of guidebooks and online research can compensate for the basic understanding of the local language. Therefore, during the survey 54% of the respondents said that they would prefer ordering food in a new language rather than going through the pain of relying on printed maps to get around the city.

59% of the respondents said that they would rather travel somewhere where no one speaks their language than getting their flight delayed. This indicates that experiencing new destinations by travellers is preferred over getting stranded at an airport from where they have limited access to the outer world.

Vedanta Group Inks MoUs With 30 Japanese Technology Firms

-         Provides global thrust to India’s Semiconductor & Display Glass Mission

Vedanta Group has signed Memoranda of Understanding with 30 Japanese technology companies for development of the Indian semiconductor and glass display manufacturing ecosystem. The signing was done at the Vedanta-Avanstrate Business Partners Summit 2022 held last week at Tokyo, Japan and was attended by more than 200 delegates from over 100 global companies.

The summit witnessed active interests from a host of companies keen to be part of the ecosystem for India’s semiconductor mission. Many partners were also felicitated for outstanding contribution to Vedanta Avanstrate business in the previous years.

The supplier conference also saw the unveiling of a “comprehensive manufacturing plan” (CMP) by Mr. Akarsh K. Hebbar, Global MD, Display and Semiconductor Business, Vedanta along with Dr. Alan Tsai, CEO, Avanstrate Inc. and Mr. Pranav Komerwar, India Head, Electronics Business. Sharing the Group’s vision and global plans of Indian display, semiconductor and Taiwan glass foray, Mr. Hebbar said, “We are committed to making India a hub for electronics manufacturing. Vedanta is focussed on taking the lead in creating the electronics industry ecosystem rather than just technology transfers. We are excited as this comprehensive plan has potential to generate business opportunities of over $40 Bn for our partners in the coming years.”

The event was also attended by representatives from Indian Embassy at Japan and Government of Gujarat led by Mr. Vijay Nehra, IAS, Director Technology Mission, Gujarat. Mr. Nehra emphasized, “Dholera region in Gujarat shall be developed along the lines of global science parks and has all required infrastructure in place. With Vedanta acting as an anchor unit, the region will be developed for 1000+ MSMEs to create a sustainable economic environment for hi-tech SCM. World class social infrastructure will be available for use in less than one year’s timeframe.”

Mr. Nehra added, “The initiative was led initially by our current honourable Prime Minister to develop Dholera as India’s Silicon Valley and has now started taking shape. Followed by individual company meetings with Govt. of Gujarat, the ecosystem partners pledged their willingness and requested reservation of facilities at the park.”

Global markets have been heavily reliant on the supply of semiconductors and display-fab on a handful of countries. The adverse effects of such dependence were glaringly visible during the supply-chain breakdown in the pandemic. To mitigate these global risks and make India self-reliant, the Government of India, under Hon. Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has formulated the strategy for Aatmanirbhar Bharat and push for manufacturing of critical semiconductors in the country. The PLI scheme for semiconductors, the EMC 2.0 scheme and many other such initiatives have been brought by the Government to establish an ecosystem of high-end tech manufacturing in India. The PLI scheme approvals by the centre are expected in a month’s time.

Earlier this year, Vedanta-Foxconn announced MoUs with Government of Gujarat for setting up the semiconductor fab unit, a display fab unit, a semiconductor assembling and a testing unit in the state. The project envisaging total investment of USD 20 Bn with employment potential of over 100,000 people aims to provide affordable electronics for Indians and is attracting global players across the value chain entailing manufacturers of highly sophisticated and sensitive equipment, materials (high purity Gases, chemicals, wafers, photomasks), equipment service providers etc.

The success of the Tokyo Summit bolters India vision for self-reliance in key futuristic technologies. In the light of supply chain diversification, partners expressed that this is a timely opportunity for India to create a sustainable ecosystem for electronics development.

Highest Increase In FDI Employment Ever – IDA Ireland

IDA Ireland, the inward investment promotion and development agency of the Irish Government, today reported strong annual results for 2022 with a substantial increase in growth in FDI employment on 2021.

Total employment in IDA client companies in Ireland now stands at 301,4751, a 9% increase on 2021. 103 of the 242 investments won in 2022 were new name investments.

Job losses remained at historically low levels with 8,407 recorded in the past year giving a net jobs total of 24,019 for 2022.

Total employment in IDA client companies in core sectors grew in 2022, up 9% to 116,192 in Information and Communications Services, up 8% 105,199 in modern manufacturing, 5.6% in traditional manufacturing to 23,658 and up 9% to 56,426 in business, financial and other services.

The strong growth in regions continued this year with 127 - or 52% of the investments won going to regional locations and employment growth recorded in every region of the country. Employment growth was highest in the Mid-East region; up 13.1% to 21,861. The Midlands Region was up 10.5% to 7,665, Dublin was also up 10.5% to 137,822, the Border up 6.3% to 8.885, the South West was up 7.5% to 52,228, the West region was up 7.3% to 31,490 the Mid-West recorded a growth increase of 3.6% to 26,004 and there was growth of 3% in the South East, to 15,520.

With sustainability one of five pillars of our strategy, IDA’s strong focus was evident in the number of sustainability project approvals in 2022 with 21 investments secured, the majority of them focused on climate change mitigation. A focus on transformation is more important than ever if companies are to remain competitive amid an accelerating shift towards a low carbon and high-tech economy. The resilience and longevity of MNCs in Ireland reflects their ability to constantly transform in response to change.  IDA is engaging with clients on RD&I, training, digitisation and sustainability related investments to ensure the FDI base is positioned for continued success in the future.

The 2022 figures continue the pattern of sustained, robust growth in FDI investment and FDI-related employment that has been achieved over a continuous period of more than ten years. However, at the announcement of our mid-year results in July, we pointed to serious global challenges and uncertainties. It is now evident that the global economy faces serious headwinds in 2023 with the continuing Russia-Ukraine war, inflation, monetary policy and geo-political developments.

IDA continues to monitor the situation in the global technology sector and continues to actively engage with its technology client base. The layoffs announced in recent weeks are regrettable and our thoughts are with those who have lost, or are in the process of, losing their jobs. The companies that have announced job losses in recent days will continue to operate in Ireland and are important companies in the global and Irish ecosystem. IDA’s focus is on the continued partnership with these companies to continue to grow their presence in Ireland and deepen their impact on the Irish economy. The technology base in Ireland has been building for over 60 years and will continue to grow in the future, despite current challenges. The underlying strength in the technology sector is driven by a number of factors, including the pace of digitalisation (across all sectors) and the associated need for new digital infrastructure and services.

1 The Annual Employment Survey shows employment in client companies on October 31st 2022. The results are preliminary, and any changes made post October 31st will be picked up in the following years survey.

An Tánaiste & Minister for Enterprise, Trade & Employment Leo Varadkar T.D. said: “Ireland has not been immune to the challenges created by global events of recent months, and we expect those to continue into 2023. However, these figures show that Ireland continues to be seen as a location of choice for new investors and long-established companies who chose to reinvest in substantial expansions of their operations here.

These are the best ever FDI employment figures in a single year – 24,019 net new jobs represent a 43% increase on 2021, which itself was a record year. The numbers directly employed in the multinational sector have also surpassed the 300,000 mark for the first time.

It is extremely positive to see the growth in investment outside of Dublin continue in 2022, with a good nationwide spread achieved. I know it’s a difficult time for people working in Tech companies as we enter the Christmas and New Year period. My office is in close contact with the companies involved and we are working with them to minimise the impact on people’s livelihoods and the wider economy.

While I am concerned about the job losses in Tech, there is a good pipeline of new investments coming from the multinationals and Irish-owned corporations in a range of sectors including Life Sciences, Food and Beverages, Manufacturing and Aviation.  We expect many positive announcements in the coming months. The economy is well diversified.  Ireland continues to maintain a reputation as an excellent location for investment.

Last week I launched a new White Paper on Enterprise which sets out the Government’s enterprise policies in the period to 2030. Foreign Direct Investment will remain central to our economic model. The White Paper seeks to advance Ireland’s FDI and trade value proposition and includes the targets of a 20% increase in IDA client expenditure in Ireland by 2024; and at least half of all FDI investments between 2021 and 2024 to be located outside of Dublin.”

Tanaz Buhariwalla, India Director IDA Ireland said: “In 2022, despite the turbulent geopolitical landscape and after-effects of the pandemic, Ireland continues to stand tall. IDA Ireland’s results for 2022 are an accomplishment we are proud of and we are happy that Indian companies have continued to support us in our growth journey. Ireland remains a preferred destination for Lifesciences, Manufacturing, CAV, ICT/Technology sectors. Undoubtedly, Ireland will retain its pro-business environment and continue to attract investments and talent.

This year also saw an increasing number of Indian workers and students opting for Ireland for work and study opportunities. In FY23, we expect growth in collaboration with Indian companies and further strengthening of the Indo-Irish relationship.”

Mary Buckley, Interim CEO IDA Ireland said: “The challenging and volatile international environment that we saw in 2021 escalated this year. In light of that, these annual results are most encouraging and show that investors’ commitment to Ireland remains strong and Ireland’s value proposition as a place to do business remains a compelling one. That said, the now evident severe headwinds facing the global economy in 2023 means we will have to work harder than ever in the year ahead to win new investment. Our FDI base of companies is also subject to these headwinds. IDA will remain close to our clients at this time of uncertainty and support them as companies review their global cost base to remain competitive.

In the face of such uncertainty, we are likely to see companies adopt a cautious approach, so slower growth is likely in 2023 with less clarity in H2 of next year.

We continue to see opportunities across and within our sectors of focus, which we believe remain well aligned to the global economy of today and well positioned to succeed in the transformed economy of the future. At the same time, we will continue to seek out and exploit opportunities in new and emerging growth areas in an evolving investment landscape.”

The forthcoming ABSEI2 survey will show that expenditure within the economy by FDI companies increased during 2021 despite the prevailing challenging conditions. Payroll was up 9.8% to €19.6bn, Irish services and materials spend increased by 10% to €11.1bn and capital expenditure was up 8% to €9.2bn. Exports of €315.5bn represented an increase of 8.7% year on year. This resilience and growth from FDI has been an important contributor to our economy and the national finances.

The altered political and economic landscape and its immediate future implications for FDI is a key focus of IDA’s current mid-term review of its strategy (Driving Recovery & Sustainable Growth – 2021-2024). The review is considering FDI implications arising from the global trends including the rise of industrial policy, open strategic autonomy, global tax reform, the future of work, the sustainability imperative and the increased prominence of geopolitics as a factor in the economic outlook.

“Considering the many changes we have seen over the last few years and the changes facing us in the years ahead, it is an opportune time for us to set a renewed medium-term vision for our strategy” the Interim CEO said. IDA also proactively engaged with Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment on the newly launched White Paper on Enterprise as IDA’s strategic objectives are strongly aligned on the two dominant trends of the 21st century, decarbonisation and technological change.

Mary Buckley: “We have experienced much change in recent years from the national recession from 2008 to the global pandemic, and considerable global economic and political upheaval. Responding proactively to change has been the hallmark of Ireland and IDA’s success and we will continue to be agile, resourceful and committed in our aim to continue to attract FDI to Ireland.

To remain successful in the years ahead we need to accelerate the carrying capacity of the economy with regard to housing, energy, water, planning, infrastructure and also with talent policies. Continued action at speed and scale to address these issues is essential if we are to successfully move to an internationally competitive low carbon, high tech economy.

Client companies remain positive about the business environment in Ireland and our attractiveness relative to key competitor locations for FDI. This is borne out by a good pipeline of investments for H1 2023. Ireland’s strengths continue to include our skilled and diverse talent base, high quality education and training ecosystem, stable and consistent policymaking, and competitive corporate tax regime.”

2 The Annual Employment Survey provides an analysis of employment levels in Industrial (including Primary Production) and Services companies under the remit of IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and Údarás na Gaeltachta. The results show employment in client companies on October 31st 2022. The results are preliminary, and any changes made post October 31st will be picked up in the following years survey.
