Vitesco Technologies Wins “LEED Gold Award” For Leadership In Energy And Environment Design

* Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a system for classifying ecological constructions

* With this gold award the company meets globally recognized sustainability design and construction standards

* Vitesco Technologies contributes with energy-efficient engineering solutions, energy-saving lighting fixtures, electric car chargers and significant use of recycled materials

Vitesco Technologies, a leading supplier of modern drive technologies and electrification solutions for sustainable mobility, received GOLD certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v4.1 Operations and Maintenance (O+M) for its manufacturing facility in Talegaon, Pune from Green Business Certification Inc (GBCI).  It now become the largest Industrial Manufacturing project in India to be certified under the category. GBCI is India’s foremost authority on sustainability in building design, construction, and operation and is part of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) that provides independent oversight of professional credentialing and project certification under ‘LEED’ green building rating system.

LEED certification is awarded to buildings that reduce their climate impact; enhance human health; protect and restore water resources; protect and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services; promote sustainable and regenerative material cycles; and enhance the overall quality of life for the community. LEED helps companies meet their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals and provides investors with a robust and globally recognized green building framework to measure and manage real-estate performance. LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (EBOM) measures the performance of a building on five parameters: energy, water, waste, transportation, and human experience.

Vitesco Technologies has earned this coveted certification for the various green initiatives it has implemented. The facility has invested in a rainwater harvesting system to capture the rainwater runoff using green infrastructure techniques. They have conducted a detailed energy analysis and walk-through audit to evaluate the energy performance of the building and have further planned various energy conservation measures that can be implemented to optimize energy usage of the site. They recently commissioned a 2.6 MW solar rooftop project generating 3 MW of solar energy with the aim of increasing it further. Moreover, regular assessment of key air parameters including carbon dioxide (CO2) & total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) is being conducted to enhance indoor air quality, and surveys are underway to understand the thermal & overall user experience to help take informed decisions in the future.

“Vitesco Technologies is honoured to receive the acclaimed LEED Gold award and LEED v4.1 Operations and Maintenance (O+M): Existing Buildings (EB) Gold certification for Leadership in Energy and Environment Design. We are proud that our Talegaon, Pune plant is the second in Vitesco Technologies to receive the LEED Gold Certification, following Debrecen, Hungary. With innovative and efficient solutions, we aim to reduce the environmental impact of the automotive industry globally and promote emission-free mobility in the long run. We are committed to our mission of Powering Clean Mobility. We built a futuristic plant in Talegaon, that is intelligent, sustainable, and predictive. This facility completely meets its grid demand with renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the facility generates sustainable electricity, and we are now operating at a carbon-neutral level, with the goal of reaching 100% carbon neutral production by 2030. It is our constant vision at Vitesco Technologies to address technological, geopolitical, sociological, and climatic change challenges that affect not just the automobile industry but also our society,” said Anurag Garg, Managing Director, and Country Head of Vitesco Technologies India.

“Vitesco Technologies has set a worthy example of how an Industrial Manufacturing project can also opt for sustainable solutions. We congratulate Vitesco Technologies on achieving this certification for its project in Talegaon and encourage other Industrial facilities to similarly step up their green initiatives,” said Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, Managing Director – Southeast Asia & Middle East of GBCI India

Consumers See Health And Well-Being As “Essential” Spend Category; Accenture Survey

* Research highlights consumer-facing companies need to respond to redefined consumer priorities

Despite financial uncertainty, consumers are not willing to reduce the amount they spend on health and well-being, according to the latest in a series of consumer surveys that Accenture (NYSE: ACN) has been conducting to test the pulse of consumer outlook and sentiment since the start of the pandemic.

The survey — of more than 11,000 consumers in 16 countries including India — found that even in the face of widespread uncertainty and personal financial strains, consumers are considering health and fitness to be an “essential,” alongside groceries and household cleaning products. Even though two-thirds (66%) of survey respondents said they feel squeezed financially, 80% also said they intend to maintain or increase their spend on areas related to health and fitness — such as exercise classes or vitamins and supplements — in the next year.

“While the mindshare for health and wellness as a category in India is growing at a rapid pace, the market size is relatively lower. We believe there is a huge opportunity for consumer goods companies in India to really listen to evolving consumer needs and accordingly reimagine their product strategy and portfolio, explore adjacencies in their business models and focus on building more trust and credibility with consumers,” said Anurag Gupta, managing director and lead – strategy & consulting, Accenture in India.

The survey also found that respondents seem to be taking a more holistic view of wellness, reframing it as much more of a consumer staple. In addition to more than four in 10 respondents (42%) saying they are increasing the amount of physical activity, one-third (33%) of respondents said that they’re more focused on self-care — such as indulging in a bath or beauty treatment — than they were a year ago.

Manish Gupta, managing director and lead – products, Accenture in India said, “With growing consumer focus on preventive healthcare and holistic well-being, it will be crucial for companies to use data and analytics to better understand consumption patterns, innovate to come up with new products, services and collaborations. We are already witnessing cross-industry partnerships across consumer electronics, wearable devices, healthcare, insurance, consumer goods, auto among others. To succeed in the post-pandemic economy, consumer-facing companies need to further assess their existing offerings, push the boundaries in terms of ecosystem partnerships and make bold moves to grow their business.”

Even with rising travel costs, the survey found that half (51%) of consumers also plan to maintain or increase their spend on leisure travel in the next year — perhaps not surprising considering the widely recognized well-being benefits associated with a vacation. Furthermore, two in five (39%) high-income respondents have booked a luxury trip or wellness retreat for some time in the next 12 months. Among millennials, one in five (21%) booked to go away to a wellness retreat this year. In addition, one-third (33%) of all survey respondents said they are willing to sacrifice spending on non-essential household products or electronics so that they can afford to travel.

While the survey identified where and how consumers are prioritizing spend, it is important that businesses understand the context in which those purchasing decisions are made. According to a recent Accenture report, “The Human Paradox: From Customer Centricity to Life Centricity,” it is becoming increasingly difficult for consumers to balance purpose and practicality in their purchases, with nearly two-thirds (64%) wishing that companies would respond faster with new offerings to meet their changing needs. Only by understanding the context will businesses have the right strategy to offer the most relevant brands, products or services.

About the Research

Accenture’s Consumer Pulse Survey 2022 offers insights into consumer outlook, sentiment and behaviors. This year’s survey is relevant to all consumer industries but is focused on consumer goods, retail, travel and health. Accenture surveyed a representative sample of 11,311 consumers from 16 countries: Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, the U.K., the U.S. and Vietnam. The survey was conducted online and targeted consumers who have made purchases for their household in the past six months. Respondents were split evenly across gender and age group. The survey was conducted between Feb. 7 and 15. This was supplemented with an additional consumer survey, conducted between April 7 and 25, which included 10,085 respondents from eight countries in the original survey: Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, the U.K. and the U.S.

Findings of the survey are presented in an Accenture report for the retail industry.

From Cell Phones To Siri – Most Of Your Favourite Tech Can Be Traced Back To ISI

* USC’s Information Sciences Institute, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, has played a pivotal role in the development of most of the tech you use every day.

In 1972, just as USC’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI) was being established, scientists around the country were connecting remote computers from different organizations, forming what would eventually become “the Internet.” This put the researchers at ISI in the perfect position to jump right into the wild new world of networked computers. Establishing the internet’s inner workings with Request for Comments (RFCs); creating the “phonebook” of the internet with the Domain Naming System (DNS); building out the system of “dots” to divide the internet into .com, .edu, org, and more; developing the rules of the road with internet protocols (IPs) – these are just some of the dizzying array of internet developments made at ISI that are still used today.

Laptops

A portable computing device that connects to a network – sound familiar? In 1974 laptops didn’t exist, but researchers at ISI were working on something that would eventually lead to them: the first portable remote-access terminal. The terminal developed at ISI was so innovative and handy, that it was used by the director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) – the agency shepherding the burgeoning ARPAnet (forerunner of the internet).

Smartphones

Back in 1979 there were no smartphones, however thanks to ISI, there was the first packet radio terminal. This was a portable system for communicating by radio with the help of a keyboard and display screen. Sounds a little bit like a smartphone! Tom Ellis, one of the founders of ISI, led a team in the development of the first packet radio terminal which would, in fact, be a precursor of the smartphone.

Zoom, Skype, Webcasts and More

In 1974, decades before the world would come to rely on real-time communications over the internet (Zoom, anyone?), ISI’s Danny Cohen was the first to implement online voice communications. Two years later, Cohen and his team would conduct the first teleconference over ARPAnet – check out this 1978 video to see how it went. A notable participant was Robert “Bob” Parker who, soon after this groundbreaking teleconference, came to ISI where he would spend over 25 years. This technology, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), is fundamental to webcasts, conference calls, Skype, Zoom and more.

Online Videos

The internet without silly cat videos?! That was the case until 1985 when video came online thanks to the work of Cohen and and ISI researcher Stephen Casner. Packet video was first transmitted by a satellite on ISI’s roof in Marina del Rey, California. Casner went on to standardize the protocols for carrying audio and video on the internet – protocols that are still used today to provide us with online videos of, among other things, cats playing the piano.

Multimedia Livestreaming

Furthering the technology of real-time online communications, in 1986, Cohen and Casner held the first real-time multimedia teleconference using packet video over the internet, communicating with each other using voice, video, text and graphics all at the same time. Casner followed that up in 1992 when he helped to create multicast internet multimedia – the ability to stream voice and video over the internet to hundreds or thousands of people at once, rather than just two or three. In 1994, this breakthrough idea was used to stream a Rolling Stones concert worldwide, an early foreshadowing of Netflix, Disney+ and Apple TVs. As the song goes: You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get… the whole future of online entertainment!

Alexa, Siri, Chatbots and More

In order to ask Alexa for the daily weather forecast, Alexa must be able to understand your words – this is natural language processing (NLP) in action. A huge step in NLP research was taken in 1988, when ISI artificial intelligence researcher William Mann invented Rhetorical Structure Theory, the theory that explains what makes written texts coherent. His work became the basis for a large body of NLP research, which eventually gets us to where we are now: Alexa reporting back that it will again be sunny and 75 degrees Fahrenheit at the ISI offices.

Online Shopping

Buy anything online lately? You can thank Clifford Neuman and his pioneering ISI team who, in 1993, created two of the earliest electronic payment systems suitable for micropayments on the World Wide Web: NetCash and NetCheque. Originally developed to pay for information online, they enabled new types of services on the internet that were previously impractical because of the lack of secure and efficient payment methods. The next year, Danny Cohen created the FastXchange brokering system, a pioneering online business.

Virtual Reality

Some technology sounds like science fiction; other technology creates science fiction. In 1999, ISI spun off the USC Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT), a pioneer in virtual reality and other immersive technologies for military and civilian uses. Ten years later, the work of ICT – including groundbreaking 3D special effects – could be seen on the big screen in the Academy Award-winning science fiction film Avatar.
