Tips For Indian Women To Stay Healthy With Menopause

Menopause affects every woman differently. For many, this transition is marked by symptoms like irregular periods, hot flashes, sweating, sleep disturbances, mood swings, irritability, joint and back pain and more.

“Indian women typically go through menopause early, at the average age of 46.2 years, five years earlier than in western nations.[i] Hormonal changes begin even earlier during perimenopause or the time around menopause, which lasts four years or even up to a decade.[ii] During this period, 80% of women are affected by menopausal symptoms. A holistic approach to managing this phase can help women relieve the discomfort and stay healthy,” said Dr. Jaideep Malhotra, past president of the Indian Menopause Society & South Asian Federation of Menopause Societies.

Preparing for this phase – like we do for important milestones in our lives, from job interviews to parenthood – is the key to a healthier life. Here are 4 broad steps you can follow to manage menopause better:

Maintain a balanced diet

Good nutrition is a game changer for managing menopause symptoms from hot flashes to bloating. Foods to include and to avoid in your diet are:

Include

Fruits and vegetables: These are full of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants your body needs. You cannot go wrong with seasonal vegetables and fresh fruits.

Fibre-rich foods and foods rich in calcium & vitamin D: High-fibre foods like leafy greens, kidney beans, and whole grains can also support better health. Dairy products and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids are good sources of nutrition.

Avoid

Fatty meats & processed foods: Fast or fried foods, processed snacks and meats are high in sodium, making you feel bloated. These foods can also affect cholesterol levels or increase your risk of heart disease.  Also, spicy food may trigger symptoms like hot flashes.

Alcohol: Moderation is key. Regular alcohol consumption can lead to amplified menopausal symptoms, problems sleeping, and heightened mental health issues.

Caffeine: A caffeine kick makes you more likely to have hot flashes. Resorting to alternative warm drinks is suggested.

Stay active

As your body changes, regular movement can help you stay healthy and strengthen your bones, boost your mood, and counter symptoms such as weight gain. Some activities you can try include:

Cardio: Aerobic activities or cardio include endurance activities that encourage you to use your large muscles. You can start with 10 minutes a day of brisk walking, jogging, swimming, running, cycling, or even dancing, and build up the intensity as you go.[iii]

Strength training: Lifting dumbbells or using weight machines can help strengthen your muscles and bones, while also reducing body fat.[iv]

Yoga: Yoga poses – from restorative and supportive to power yoga – are also a good source of targeted symptom relief, helping relax the body. Paired with meditation or breathing exercises, these can also prompt relaxation and mindfulness.

Mental Health

Hormonal changes during perimenopause or menopause can impact emotional and mental health. Women going through this phase may experience symptoms such as lack of sleep, anxiety, lack of motivation, fatigue stress or depression. Most of the symptoms can be managed through lifestyle changes. Exercise, healthy food habits, staying hydrated, relaxation techniques for sound sleep may help ease these symptoms. Find what works for you and set realistic, attainable goals.

Consult with a doctor

Good health helps avoid co-morbid conditions, which menopausal women are at greater risk of developing, such as osteoporosis and heart disease. There are also many treatment options available to ease menopausal symptoms, including menopausal hormonal therapy, which can help maintain your body’s estrogen levels and manage symptoms.[v] It’s always advisable to consult your doctor in case you have symptoms that are affecting you.

“Menopause is a time of transition for women, which can prove challenging. At Abbott, believe it is vital to raise awareness on the physical, mental and overall emotional aspects of menopause, so that women can seek the help they may need and live this life stage fully. At the same time, we partner with healthcare professionals to share therapy best practices and change how we address women experiencing menopause, to support women holistically, beyond physical symptoms,” said Dr. Jejoe Karankumar, Medical Director, Abbott India.

Consult your doctor to find out what can help alleviate your symptoms so you can sail through this phase with ease.

HDBFS Celebrates World Physiotherapy Day With India’s Truckers’ Community Between September 8-12, 2022

World Physiotherapy Day is annually observed on September 8 to raise awareness about the contribution physiotherapists make to society. To make this day more meaningful, HDB Financial Services (HDBFS) is organizing exclusive physiotherapy camps for the trucker community under its CSR initiative Transport Aarogyam Kendra (TAK).

Truck drivers often drive long-haul routes in confined spaces. Other factors like rough terrain, ergonomic dysfunctioning, vibrations during driving, urgency of deliveries, etc. add to their physical and emotional woes.

With an aim to focus on the truck driver’s health and wellbeing, HDBFS is conducting free physiotherapy camps from 8th September to 12th September across the states of Karnataka, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Telangana, Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha, Assam and Madhya Pradesh, in thirty cities. The locations have been strategically planned in and around transport hubs to benefit maximum number of truck drivers. The camps have been organized in collaboration with local medical practitioners, transporters and industry associations. Experienced therapists and state-of-the-art medical equipment are used at the camps to provide quality healthcare services to truck drivers.

Commenting on the camp organization, Ajay Thakur – National Head, Commercial Vehicle Business said, “Over time, truck drivers can develop serious muscular imbalances which leads to bone and nerve problems leading to various aches. With an objective to focus on their overall health, HDB Financial Services has set up physiotherapy camps as across India to reach out to more number of drivers and mitigate the health challenges they experience through expert counselling sessions.”

About Transport Aarogyam Kendra

HDB Financial Services (HDBFS) initiated “Transport Aarogyam Kendra” – a physiotherapy program offered to the community at no cost, as a part of its CSR initiative for truck drivers.

HDB’s Transport Aarogyam Kendras offer preventive and curative care for occupation-related health disorders experienced by most truck drivers owing to their strenuous working conditions such as driving for very long hours with fixed seating posture, repetitive twisting of neck and back, working and sleeping in tight spaces, inadequate rest and poor diet. The primary objective of HDB’s Transport Aarogyam Kendra initiative is to improve the physical health condition of truck drivers in India.

TAK is being implemented in two formats; Mobile Camp Model and Static Clinic. Mobile Camps are short duration physio camps organized in transport hubs to create awareness on preventive care available in the form of physiotherapy, whereas Static Clinics offer preventive and therapeutic physio-care at the Kendras within the transport hubs.

In 2021, around World Physiotherapy Day, HDB Financial Services launched its first static Transport Aarogyam Kendra in Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar, followed by a Kendra launch in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu and Kalamboli, Maharashtra. The locations are strategically selected in and around major transport hubs to ensure easy access and reach to drivers. Until date, TAK initiative has benefitted over 35,000 truck drivers in India.

HDFC ERGO Announces The Launch Of The 7th Edition Of Insurance Awareness Award Junior Quiz

-          Targeted at school students, the initiative is aimed at driving insurance awareness among young minds in India

-          Over 3 lakh students reached from 1,500+ schools across 110+ cities in India

HDFC ERGO General Insurance Company, India’s leading private sector general insurance company, announced the launch of the 7th edition of HDFC ERGO Insurance Awareness Award Junior - Quiz 2022. This initiative is an awareness platform aimed at driving insurance literacy amongst students to educate them on the importance of financial security at an early age.

Considering the importance of spreading insurance awareness among students, HDFC ERGO came up with the concept of the insurance quiz in 2016 to help students to proactively learn about insurance at an early age and educate them on the need to secure their financial future. This year, the insurance quiz gets bigger with a reach of over 3 lakh students in 1,500+ schools from 110+ cities. 2,600 students from Classes VIII and IX are participating in this nationwide quiz, starting September 2, 2022.

Speaking about the quiz competition, Mr. Ritesh Kumar, MD & CEO, HDFC ERGO General Insurance said, “The insurance penetration for India is pegged at 4.2% in 2021, which is lower than the global average of 7.0%. One of the reasons for low insurance penetration is low awareness about insurance. We started the Insurance quiz with a view to improve insurance awareness. At a young age, students can be groomed and taught the importance of insurance to safeguard their future. We believe that this platform educates the future generation of our nation about insurance and thus contributes towards building a secure nation.”

This unique initiative has so far ignited more than 6 lakh young minds with the concept of insurance. In 2016, the quiz started in just one city of Mumbai, and has now spread its wings across more than 110 cities in the country. The quiz has been layered into three rounds – City, Zonal, and Finals. The City round winners qualify for the Zonal rounds, and the winners of the latter battle it out to secure a place in the Grand Finale. There are prizes worth Rs. 7.5 lakh to be won across the different levels of the quiz contest. The grand finale will be hosted on September 27, 2022, which also marks the 20th anniversary of the company.
