Reliance General Insurance Introduces a Dedicated "Livelihood Protection Insurance Policy" for Daily Income Earners

Reliance General Insurance, a 100% subsidiary of Reliance Capital, introduced first of its kind “Livelihood Protection Insurance Cover” dedicated for Daily-income earners from the grievous impact of weather vagaries on their income and livelihood.

This IRDAI approved product under Sandbox guidelines has been designed in a way where the weather risk is monitored from Automated weather stationsfrom Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) or by private Independent third parties involved in supply of weather data and claim is automatically calculated using this procured weather data. Hence, the claims will be derived comparing the actual weather from defined benchmark. In case, if the actual weather goes above the defined benchmark the insured would be eligible for claims. The policy will be offered for weather related risks triggered due to – wind (cyclone, dust / sand storms), temperature (cold & heat waves), rainfall (floods / excess rainfall), and Air Quality Index (AQI).

The best feature of this insurance policy is that it will provide the immediate assistance to insured in case of weather vagaries as it covers the weather-based risk particular to a geographical location during a time-period that’s most affected. In the pilot phase, the policy is being launched for only 10,000 customers in India, and the premium is kept extremely low and affordable.

Commenting on the recent development, Rakesh Jain, ED & CEO, Reliance General Insurance, said, “In the last few years, India has witnessed multiple weather related catastrophes that pose a serious threat to the normal lives and livelihoods of the daily earners. Therefore, prioritizing the financial resilience of the self-employed and daily waged individuals takes top priority for us. The Livelihood Protection policy has been introduced in line with our vision to provide insurance to the next-billion Indians.”

As a traditionally underinsured and one of the most acutely vulnerable countries to natural disasters, Reliance General Insurance aims to expand the blanket of financial security for the ones who need it the most, through the Livelihood Protection Insurance Cover.

IndiaFirst Life Partners with InsureNearby to Offer Insurance Khata Plan to Low-Income Brackets

InsureNearby, the insurance arm of PayNearby, India’s largest hyperlocal fintech network, partners with IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company Limited (IndiaFirst Life), promoted by Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India, to endorse a unique insurance product called “Insurance Khata Plan”. Specifically designed to serve the low-income bracket, the product not only secures the insured and their family's needs in case of an untimely demise, but also provides a flexible deposit plan that allows them to save and fulfil their dreams. The plan allows complete flexibility to the buyers in choosing the frequency and tenure besides allowing them to pay the premiums as per their convenience. It also functions as an excellent saving product as the beneficiary gets the entire money back at the maturity of the policy.

With more than 82% of India's workforce engaged in the unorganised sector, over 39 crore workers and their families live under the constant threat of financial setbacks. Lack of a constant income source plays a huge hindrance in paying fixed annual or monthly premiums regularly. This results in an insufficient or non-existent insurance coverage, which often prods them into an inevitable poverty cycle. This set of economically weaker population has unique insurance needs and hence require a customised product that offers flexibility, ease of access and a frequency that adapts to their erratic earnings while providing the security of an insurance cover.

IndiaFirst Life’s Insurance Khata Plan is a non-linked, non-participating, term assurance with return of premium plan. The product has been designed to offer financial protection in the form of a life cover to the family besides offering the provision of returning more than the premium paid in total when unclaimed at the end of the policy term.

Comprising of 72% of total population of the country, rural India is largely uninsured and unprotected. Through InsureNearby’s 45,000 POS agents, the product will now be made easily available to the country’s masses. InsureNearby will embark on a journey to train their vast network of 8.5+ lakh retail agents, registered under its sister organization PayNearby, to upscale them as credible POS agents. The geographical reach of these last mile retail outlets will enable the company to provide insurance to marginalized customers in the most far flung towns and villages across the country. The unique offering thus creates a force multiplier, where people who have never sold insurance are trained to sell to people who have never before bought the product. The objective is to insure India and make protection available for all.

Commenting on the association, Anand Kumar Bajaj, Founder, MD & CEO, PayNearby said, “With around 3% insurance penetration, Indians have largely been left unprotected to life’s vagaries. Our motto has always been to make safe and secure financial solutions available to our masses and help them move ahead in life. In accordance with our motto, Zidd Surakshit Aage Badhne Ki, this partnership with IndiaFirst allows us to provide a unique life insurance policy to our customers, that not only protects their families in case of a demise, but also provides them the flexibility to gradually plan and build their savings to meet their evolving life goals. We are excited about this partnership and am confident that our distribution capability along with their product innovation will create a force multiplier that will help bridge the huge gap in protection coverage for our citizens. A unique life insurance policy that not only protects their families in case of demise, but also provides a flexible deposit platform for fulfilling their dreams.”

Commenting on the strategic alliance, Rushabh Gandhi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, IndiaFirst Life Insurance Co Ltd said, “Our alliance, with a like-minded and dynamic institution as, InsureNearby is a strategic leap in line with IndiaFirst Life’s vision to provide life insurance cover at affordable rates to last mile customers in India. Aditya Birla Capital’s Subsidiaries Record Over Four Million Customer Interactions on Digital Service Platforms

Aditya Birla Capital Limited (ABCL), the holding company of the financial services businesses of the Aditya Birla Group, recorded a significant rise in customer interactions on the digital channels of its subsidiaries. These interactions on platforms such as WhatsApp, Chatbots, Websites and Apps crossed the four million mark in the past three months during the Covid-19 lockdown, witnessing an almost 2X jump when compared to the same period last year. ABCL’s subsidiaries have been at the forefront of adopting new technologies for customer convenience. Several services like change of address on the website for the stock broking business or using WhatsApp for renewal of Health Insurance policies or registering SIPs for Mutual fund were introduced for the first time in the industry. The Mutual Fund business recently introduced Google Assistant based voice bot for the top customer queries. The Lending business and Mutual Fund business have developed a machine learning (ML) based email bot for automated servicing of over 30,000 customer queries a month

Over the last one year, ABCL’s subsidiaries have significantly ramped up their digital services across Websites, Chatbot and WhatsApp to ensure availability of over 94 per cent of their services online, as compared to about 71 per cent last year. This has been a huge advantage during the lockdown when customer and distributor onboarding and purchase journeys have been enabled digitally. The WhatsApp/Chatbot channel is now one of the most comprehensive in the financial services industry, offering over 180 services across the mutual fund, lending, housing finance, life insurance and health insurance businesses. The businesses witnessed WhatsApp emerging as one of the most preferred channels, with almost a million customer interactions since March’ 20.

Ajay Srinivasan, Chief Executive, Aditya Birla Capital, said, “Digital enablement to create a superior customer experience throughout the customer journey has been a key part of our agenda. This enabled us to proactively transform our customer journeys to being 100% digital during the period of lockdown. These capabilities held us in good stead when COVID hit the world and helped us to service our customers without any interruptions. We will continue to leverage new technologies to make our customer and distributor experience best in class.”

Owing to the ongoing lockdown, there has been a shift in demand for zero contact and paperless purchase options. Last year ABCL’s subsidiaries had worked on developing non-contact, paperless, seamless purchase journeys across product lines through mobile apps and tabs. Many technologies such as biometrics, intelligent OCR, Video KYC, e-contracts were used for the first time in the industry. The NBFC and Mutual Fund businesses have been one of the first in the industry to launch video KYC for its customers. Over 90 per cent customers were on-boarded through digital channels alone in FY20, as compared to 72 per cent in FY19. The businesses deployed over 200 robotic processes (RPA) to automate mid-office and back office work.
