Cummins To Power “GAIL’s Green Hydrogen Ambitions In Collaboration With Maire Tecnimont”

Cummins, a global power solutions provider, will provide technology in collaboration with the EPC player Tecnimont Private Limited (TCMPL), the Indian subsidiary of Maire Tecnimont Group, - to build one of India’s largest proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer for GAIL.

Cummins will leverage its proprietary PEM electrolysis technology, one of the most advanced and efficient technologies available today, to manufacture electrolyzers for the GAIL project. This project is anticipated to produce 4.3 tons of green hydrogen per day (equivalent to ~10 MW of electrical power input).

At the commencement of this flagship project, Ashwath Ram, MD of Cummins India, said,  “At Cummins, our approach to sustainability aligns with the company’s mission to make people’s lives better by powering a more prosperous world. We are deeply aligned with India’s National Hydrogen Mission to pave the path toward zero emissions and support the transition to decarbonized power. The GAIL Green Hydrogen production project based on our PEM Electrolyzer technology is a first of its kind and will pave the way for many such projects in the future. Cummins has a long history of advanced technology and engineering capabilities to innovate across a broad portfolio of market-leading renewable hydrogen technologies and has been a part of many of the world’s hydrogen ‘firsts.’ Despite a challenging timeline, we are excited about the commencement of this project and strongly believe that decarbonization is a growth opportunity for Cummins.”

As the lightest and most abundant element in the universe, hydrogen is rarely found in nature in its elemental form and is always extracted from other hydrogen-containing compounds. Thus, how well hydrogen contributes to decarbonization is determined by its production method. Brown or grey hydrogen is produced via coal gasification or steam methane reforming; green hydrogen is produced using water electrolysis with electricity generated by renewable sources. Cummins has its proprietary PEM electrolysis technology which is used to manufacture PEM electrolyzers globally. The R&D team at Cummins continues to work on other advanced technologies of electrolysis as well.

Cummins has supplied and commissioned more than 600 electrolyzers worldwide with PEM and alkaline technologies. These electrolyzers operate successfully in leading hydrogen use cases such as hydrogen refueling stations, industrial applications, gas grids, and energy storage projects.

WinZO Becomes India’s First Interactive Entertainment Platform To Be Featured On “mSeva”

* mSeva is offering listing and distribution of apps without any charge

* More than 1000 apps-based services including news, social media, payments etc are available on mSeva app store

* WinZO is the first gaming application to be available on mSeva

* This follows Google’s implementation of “arbitrary classification” of online gaming that allows only fantasy gaming and rummy apps on Play Store for a year

India’s largest interactive entertainment platform, WinZO, is selected to be featured on the government-owned and developed mobile app storemSeva. WinZO is the first gaming & interactive entertainment platform to be available on mSeva, India’s only indigenously built app store launched by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The partnership with mSeva is to further the government’s mission of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ as WinZO is available in 12 vernacular languages with over 100 million users from Tier 2 to Tier 5 parts of Bharat. 20% users make their first ever digital payment on WinZO.

Speaking about the partnership, Saumya Singh Rathore, Co-founder of WinZO said, “We are elated to partner with mSeva, an app store under the aegis of MeiTY, for the Indians by the Indians. This partnership is in sync with WinZO’s mission to build a world class game tech product to serve every household in Bharat. mSeva will help us increase our reach multiple folds and give India the gaming experience it deserves.”

The move is also aimed at breaking Google’s monopoly over selection and distribution of applications and high commission charges. Today, the Indian mobile market is heavily dominated by android with 95% market share and this leaves developers with only Google Play Store as an option to publish and distribute their apps. It levies a commission in the range of 30% for in-app purchases. This negatively impacts the revenue of the developers and has long term implications on IP/ content creation in the country because of lack of viable revenue models.

mSeva, on other hand, does not have any distribution charge for not just delivering government and other public services but also for private players in health, education, agriculture, financial, online payments, social welfare, food, transport, energy, among others. It has created the digital infrastructure to help businesses set up low-cost and quick-to-build apps that can be built using scalable technology. More than 1000 apps-based services including news, social media, payments etc are available on mSeva app store. These include MyGov, Paytm etc. WinZO is also among the early private adopters of the app store and plans to promote mSeva as a way to download the app among its potential users.

WinZO hosts over 100 games from third party game developers from all across the country. It has a unique micro-transaction based business model that lets game developers and studios generate 100X revenues through its 100 million user base clocking over 3.5 billion microtransactions per month. The social gaming pioneer also created employment opportunities for a diverse set of sections which includes over 500 translators who are mainly stay-at-home housewives, college students, retired government employees, and 75,000 regional micro- influencers who distribute the app in every corner of the country.

AI In 2023: What To Expect In The Coming Year? IBM Report

IBM hosted its AI Day on 08th December 2022 to reinforce IBM’s commitment to helping clients leverage the power of AI and Automation in the new world. Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India/South Asia, inaugurated the event, where he was joined by Viswanath Ramaswamy, Vice President, Technology, IBM India/ South Asia to drive conversations on how IBM’s AI approach and offerings are creating opportunities for the economy, businesses, and societies in India. As part of AI Day, Rahul Deshpande, Global Practice Delivery Head and Business Solutions Head for AI Solutions Practice, Wipro Limited, discussed ‘Unlocking Business Drivers for AI Adoption’ at a Fireside Chat with Siddhesh Naik, Country Leader, Data, AI & Automation software, Technology Sales, IBM India/South Asia. The event also featured discussions on technology trends that will power India's AI Charter in 2023.

While the pandemic has brought uncertainty to all facets of society, one thing is certain: the importance of technology in daily life has never been greater. Over the past two years, artificial intelligence has helped businesses ease the strain of workforce dislocation, supply chain challenges, IT incidents, customer service interruptions, etc. That is why AI adoption is steadily on the rise. According to IBM’s Global AI Adoption Index 2022, 57% of IT professionals in India report that their organization has actively deployed AI in their business, and over a quarter (27%) indicate that their organization is exploring the use of AI. Going into 2023, there are 7 key areas where we’ll see AI adoption accelerate, leading to more meaningful applications in different industries.

AI Powered Intelligent Automation: With the right AI Powered Automation processes and team in place, intelligent automation will optimize business and IT processes across all industries and combat the growing skills gap to create a deeper focus on higher value work.

Rise of Cyber Assistants: Skilled AI systems or Cyber Assistants are adept at identifying abnormal behaviours, assessing vulnerabilities dynamically and flagging anomalous activity that can indicate new threats. AI will also improve its knowledge over time to better understand cybersecurity threats and cyber risk by consuming billions of data artifacts.

Creating Reusable AI through Foundation Models: The next wave in AI, called foundation models, will replace the task-specific models that have dominated the AI landscape to date by introducing systems that are trained on a broad set of unlabeled data and can be used and re-used for different tasks, with minimal fine-tuning.

Synthetic Data: Data (e.g., financial information, healthcare records and consumer analysis) come with significant hurdles such as privacy, ethics, and copyright laws. Data these days is also often expensive and comes with baked-in vulnerabilities like bias. Synthetic data will offer a work-around because they are computer-generated examples that can augment or replace real data to speed up the training of AI models, protect sensitive data, improve accuracy, or find and mitigate bias and security weaknesses.

Energizing a Carbon-Neutral Future: Today, environmental risks are business risks, but technology can help companies mitigate them by deploying strategies that decarbonize and digitize businesses across industries. By applying AI technology, companies will establish more transparent, traceable, and decarbonized supply chains. AI and automation will help organizations to collect data, identify risk, validate documentation, and provide audit trails, even in high inflationary periods, while also managing their carbon, waste, energy, water consumption and material utility.

Personalization in Multiple Dimensions: In 2023, AI will continue its impact on the consumer care journey with more personalized and fully realized interactions. Conversational AI with expressions and emotions along with the voice of choice will bring in the personalization needed for making digital transformation possible.

Trustworthy AI implemented at Enterprise Scale: According to IBM’s Global AI Adoption Index 2022, four out of five businesses believe it is important to be able to describe how their AI made a decision. As organizations continue to leverage AI to improve processes, there will be an increased focus on trust, transparency, and governance of AI systems to realize it’s true potential.  Unboxing data to do meaningful EDA (Exploratory data analysis) coupled with platforms to identify bias, data quality and explainability in order to inform customers and regulatory bodies about how specific decisions were made and what factors will change those decisions.

For India to achieve its $5 trillion GDP target by FY27, businesses must draw a significant correlation between AI maturity and its growth trajectory. As the country moves forward on its economic growth path, further enhancing data and AI capabilities at scale are critical. This revolution will not only boost industrial productivity but also transform India's socio-economic situation, powering India’s digital dream.

Supporting Quotes

Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India/ South Asia said, “As digitization in India continues to deepen, companies are eager to deploy AI and automation capabilities at scale to drive innovation and competitiveness. As one of the fastest-growing economies, the world’s largest community of developers and a large start-up ecosystem, India is well poised to lead the AI revolution and establish itself as an AI innovation garage of the world.”

Viswanath Ramaswamy, Vice President, Technology, IBM India/ South Asia said, “AI has truly come into its own in the past few years, especially with self-driving cars, chatbots, and digital assistants. A robust ecosystem for AI is being built in India, and it is a matter of pride to be part of this revolution. When deployed appropriately, AI and Automation can transform government services, education, healthcare, and business interactions with customers in the upcoming techade. AI will scale and move from an operational 'benefit' to an essential element in business growth and modernization. I am excited to see how India@100 could serve as a global laboratory for developing AI technologies in India, for India and the world.”

Rahul Deshpande, Global Practice Delivery Head and Business Solutions Head for AI Solutions Practice, Wipro Limited said, “AI is no longer a thing of the future- we are living in a world where enterprises are infusing intelligence in their core businesses and flourishing even in a disruptive market. These intelligent enterprises are realising their ambitions with never-seen-before revenue growth and we ourselves as consumers are experiencing the effects. To harness the power of AI and data, we need to measure the E-IQ (Enterprise Intelligence Quotient) of a business. E-IQ assesses an enterprise's current intelligence infusion level and provides capabilities for stepping up its intelligence quotient. At Wipro AI Solutions, we envision AI to be the core of the intelligence fabric that incrementally builds capabilities to address pan enterprise use-cases making AI available across the entire value chain. AI is a diverse and endlessly fascinating area that continues to transform our lives as the engine of productivity and economic growth. ”
