Indian Institute of Science Hosts The Springer Nature India Research Tour Team On campus

* The role of open science discussed to make research more accessible

Springer Nature Group CEO Frank Vrancken Peeters emphasises on the need for collaboration between the research community, publishers and policymakers to strengthen the country’s research landscape and to promote the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru hosted the 9th research summit as part of Springer Nature’s India Research Tour, being conducted in collaboration with the Indian Ministry of Education on Monday, 9 October 2023. The event focused on the role of open science and transformative agreements to make research more accessible for all.

Under a transformative agreement subscription access and OA publishing are brought together into one reading and publishing contract across a consortium of institutions. This means that researchers in those institutions can publish under the “gold” open access model, while also gaining access to research in subscription journals.

Speaking at the event, Frank Vrancken Peeters, CEO of Springer Nature Group said: “India is one of the fastest growing research markets in the world, second only to China. While the Indian government with its recent National Research Fund Act has reaffirmed its commitment towards research in the country, it is important that researchers, publishers and the policymakers work together to make research more accessible globally. Open Access publishing and Transformative Agreements are instrumental in enabling sustainable country-level transition to Open Access, which will make research more visible across geographies.”

The Springer Nature India Research Tour was flagged off at the Indian Ministry of Education’s office at Shastri Bhavan on 27 September. It is set to cover 15 institutes across 10 states in India over 20 days, of which its 9th stop was IISc Bengaluru.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Govindan Rangarajan, Director of IISC Bengaluru said: “Research is the underlying theme of this tour, and research is what we concentrate on at IISc. Going forward, research will play a more important role, given all the challenges we face. We saw these huge challenges posed by the pandemic, and now we are facing the challenge posed by climate change, stress on water resources etc. all these are challenges that need to be addressed collectively. I am sure we can provide better exposure to young researchers through such initiatives.”

The India Research Tour’s primary objective is to fortify the Indian research landscape by nurturing the talents of young researchers and creating an inclusive environment for knowledge dissemination. One of the tour’s fundamental principles is to democratise research, fostering conversations that revolve around ensuring access for all and promoting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

TKM Showcases Its Special-Purpose Hilux At The East Tech, Organised Under The Aegis Of Eastern Command Of The Indian Army

Basis comprehensive market survey, TKM displayed special-purpose Hilux (two vehicles) modified with the support of an authorized external vendor, that can fulfil specific customer requirements, suiting the varied needs, and apt for army usage

Bengaluru, 10th October 2023: Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) today showcased two special purpose iconic Hilux, modified with the support of an authorised external vendor, at the East Tech 2023 (ET2023), a technology-showcase annual event conducted by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army in association with Government of Assam. This event aims to promote state-of-the-art indigenous development and production of defence technological capabilities and attain “Atmanirbharta” (self-reliance) in defence sector. Further, this year reflects a bigger leap in reinforcing the Indian army’s endeavours in the areas of Synergy & Research Development and Innovation for modernization of the Indian army.

Having conducted comprehensive market survey to understand the different mobility requirements of the specific consumers which includes the Indian Army, TKM through its authorised external vendor has made certain modifications on the versatile Hilux (two units displayed), to suit the varied needs which can also aptly meet the Indian army requirements. These curated vehicles signify TKM’s commitment to identify unique solutions to meet special customers’ requirements including army usage, and thus support the evolving mobility needs across markets and verticals, thereby providing ‘Mobility for All’.

Further to such market survey, TKM has applied two distinct modifications through an authorised external vendor, to the Toyota Hilux namely the Field Diagnosis Vehicle (FDV) and the Forest Patrolling Vehicle (FPV), to serve specific army needs and other special consumer requirements. Given the operational and logistic challenges of Indian army, owing to diverse terrain and climatic conditions, it necessitates more customisation and dedicated solutions to significantly overcome the on-ground necessities of the troops. In this direction, the FDV is designed to provide essential vehicle servicing in remote locations, supporting the Army at defence sites. On the other hand, the FPV helps Indian army for patrolling movement, surveillance and is equipped with fog lamps for better vision at night, digital video for recording and winch for rescue operations during emergency situations.

In addition to these modified versions, the general-purpose Hilux (catering to the general customers’ personal and business uses) was also on display at the Expo being held during Oct 10-11th at the Mani Ram Dewan Trade Centre, Guwahati. Earlier in July 2023, TKM handed over a fleet of Toyota Hilux, marking the company’s first-ever delivery of its Hilux to the Indian Army. Further, in Sep 2023, Toyota displayed two modified (with the support of an authorised external vendor) Hilux vehicles - Field Diagnosis Vehicle (FDV) and Rapid Intervention Vehicle (RIV) at the North Tech Symposium organised by Northern Command of Indian Army.

Commenting on the occasion, Mr. Varinder Kumar Wadhwa, General Manager – Strategic Business Unit (East) of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “We, at TKM, take great pride and are deeply honoured to have the opportunity to present the customized variants of the iconic Hilux, at the East Tech 2023. This has enabled Toyota to demonstrate the distinctive features of special purpose Hilux (modified through our authorized external vendor) that can cater to the specific needs of the Indian army to enhance the operational efficiency at defence sites. Looking ahead, we remain steadfast to extend necessary support to defence sector in achieving self-reliance.”

Forensic Sciences, CCTNS, ICJS & Legal Reforms: Milestones In India's Justice System

Addressing the 49th All India Police Science Congress, Amit Shah, the Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation, said, "Forensic Science, the role of CCTNS and ICJS, and changes in the IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act are proving to be a milestone in India's criminal justice system in the modern era."

The 49th All India Police Science Congress is important not only because it addresses topics like policing in the 5G era, narcotics as a game-changer, challenges of social media, community policing, internal security coordination, and security along borders, but also because it is the first police science congress of the modern era.

The IPC, CrPC, and Evidence Act were all established by the British. From 1860 to 2023, there have been no changes. However, as times change, society changes, and the methods and scales of crime also change. So, it becomes crucial to make amendments in law with changing times.

The new name for the Indian Penal Code will be the Indian Justice Code, the new name for the Criminal Procedure Code will be the Indian Civil Security Code, and the Indian Evidence Act will be replaced by Bharatiya Sakshya Bill. With these changes, there will be revolutionary transformations in the country's criminal justice system.

While the laws established by the British aimed at giving 'punishment or penalty', the new laws being formulated by Modi-Shah will aim at delivering 'justice'. It can be seen that the amendments in the laws established by the British are a way to break free from the mentality of subjugation.

Thanks to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the expert guidance of Minister of Home Affairs and Cooperation Amit Shah, after these three laws are passed the citizens of the country will heave a sigh of relief vis-à-vis the problem of delayed justice. The first condition for the development of any country is that the law and order situation is sound. Over the past nine years, several important steps have been taken to improve law and order.

In the modern era, during Amritkaal, law and order significantly improved in the three terror hotspots of Jammu and Kashmir, Northeast, and Left-Wing Extremist regions. Unprecedented work is also being done to strengthen internal security and border security. Shah emphasized that in the field of internal security, India is on the path to become self-reliant.

Based on the achievements of the past nine years, it is undeniable that Shah's claim in the political arena is credible that when India celebrates its 100th year of independence, it will undoubtedly stand tall in every field.

Godrej & Boyce Increases Energy Savings And Reduces Carbon Emissions With An Innovative Waste Heat Recovery System

~ Godrej's Waste Heat Recovery System Saves 1700 kWh Daily and Reduces CO2 Emissions by 465 Tons Annually

Amidst rising energy costs and an urgent global imperative to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy efficiency, industrial facilities are undergoing a remarkable transformation to maintain a competitive edge and achieve cost savings in the long run. In line with this, Godrej Electricals & Electronics, a business unit of Godrej & Boyce, is paving the way for sustainable industrial practices through the innovative technology of 'Godrej Waste Heat Recovery System' unit, recently installed at a leading beverage manufacturer’s plant in India. With a resolute commitment to pioneer sustainable manufacturing practices, Godrej & Boyce aims to reduce CO2 Emissions by 100,000 tons from similar processes by the next 5 years.

Industrial processes often produce copious amounts of heat, which traditionally dissipates into the atmosphere. Waste Heat Recovery involves the process of capturing and repurposing heat energy from waste heat sources within industrial plants. Instead of allowing this valuable resource to dissipate into the environment, it is now transformed into additional heat or converted into electrical and mechanical power. By harnessing this surplus heat, industries can now dramatically improve their overall energy efficiency, resulting in reduced energy costs and significantly lowered carbon emissions. Godrej Electricals & Electronics has successfully installed the Godrej Waste Heat Recovery System unit for a prominent global beverage manufacturer in India.

The outcomes of the innovative technology installed for the leading beverage manufacturer by Godrej Electricals & Electronics include achieving actual energy savings of 1750 kWh per day, the recovery of 370 MWh of energy since installation, a substantial reduction of 465 tons of CO2 emissions annually, and an impressive payback period of less than 1.5 years.

Commenting on this innovation, Raghavendra Mirji, Senior Vice President & Business Head, Godrej Electricals & Electronics said, “Our commitment to sustainable industrial practices through innovative solutions like the Godrej Waste Heat Recovery System reflects our larger vision of pioneering environmental stewardship within the industrial landscape. By harnessing waste heat to enhance energy efficiency, we not only drive down operational costs but also set a powerful example for industries worldwide. Our mission is to lead the way towards a greener, more sustainable future, where reducing carbon emissions is not just a necessity but a shared responsibility, and where every watt of energy saved is a step towards a brighter tomorrow.”

About Godrej Electricals & Electronics
