Emeritus Partners With Vahani To Provide Education And Upskilling Opportunities To Young Women Through INR 1 Crore In Scholarships

* Scholarships to programmes from world class universities will teach women future skills to create career opportunities

Emeritus, the global leader in making high-quality education accessible and affordable to individuals, companies, and governments worldwide, has announced a scholarship programme for young women through Vahani, an NGO dedicated to educating talented students from less privileged socio-economic backgrounds. Through this programme, INR 1 crore in scholarships will be provided to Vahani Alumnae to access Emeritus’ education programmes offered in partnership with world-class universities across technology, data analytics and digital marketing fields, as a gateway for women to enter into various industries of the economy.

According to the World Economic Forum, due to the lack of opportunities, 45% of women in India aged 15-29 years are not engaged in any education, employment, or training. This contrasts with only 6.5% of men. Access to upskilling and education programmes are critical to providing young women with the tools and skills to succeed in the workforce, opening up career and employment possibilities. Women’s education, training and upskilling is critical to the growth, society and economy of India as a whole. The increasing interest to undertake upskilling programmes to create future job opportunities is evident at Emeritus where over 40% of the learners across programmes are women and the company believes this number will continue to grow year-on-year.

Speaking about the scholarships for girl students, Ashwin Damera, Co-Founder and CEO, Emeritus said, “At Emeritus, we believe that education is transformational and we are on a mission to make it more accessible. We are proud to partner with Vahani, to help women across India learn new skills to unlock career opportunities and bridge gender gaps in skill training.”

The scholarship programme is an extension of Emeritus’ commitment to increasing access to education to marginalized and underserved communities. In 2021, Emeritus launched a partnership with Vahani which included individual scholarships and one-on-one mentorship for Vahani Alumni. Through this tie-up, Emeritus team members have been on boarded as Vahani Mentors, who provide one-on-one guidance to their mentees twice a month, thereby helping them choose better career paths.

Ms. Reeva Misra, Founder and Chairperson of Vahani Scholarship, started the NGO with a vision to create an India where the most gifted children could flourish, especially children from underserved socioeconomic backgrounds, religion or gender. Identifying a gap in the accessibility to quality higher education, Misra founded Vahani Scholarship to support the underserved. Vahani’ s mission is to build future leaders of change, fund the education of deserving women and children, and mentor and nurture them towards their holistic development. Vahani also conducts skill-building workshops, provides one-on-one mentorship, psychological counselling, English classes and assistance in procuring summer internships.

Air India Group Set To Fly Over 90 All-Women Crew Flights To Celebrate International Women’s Day

In the run-up to International Women’s Day, Air India along with Air India Express and AirAsia India has scheduled a staggering total of over 90 all-women crew flights as a tribute to the spirit of the power of women.  The number is also significant in relation to the 90th Anniversary of Bharat Ratna JRD Tata’s first commercial flight.

The Air India group has been operating these all-women crew flights on international and domestic routes since 1st March 2023. In tune with this year’s theme ‘DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality’, it exemplifies the myriad ways in which women have contributed to the aviation sector and enriched it and emphasises the diversity and inclusion of the airlines’ women workforce.

The sheer volume of the number of flights, the cabin and cockpit crew covering 12 international destinations besides most of the domestic destinations this year reiterates the organisation’s rich legacy of having women employees excelling in every area of its functioning.

Women constitute over 40% of Air India’s workforce, with 275 of its 1825 pilots being women, representing 15% of the cockpit crew strength and making it an airline having one of the largest number of female pilots.

Speaking on the occasion, Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director of Air India, said: “India has the largest number of commercial women pilots in the world and with more Indian women pursuing careers in aviation, we are achieving gender equality in the workforce. We are proud of the women workforce with us at Air India today, and we thank each of them for sending out a powerful message that women can excel in any field.”

Besides, the cockpit and cabin crew most of these flights will be served by women dispatchers, safety and quality auditors, loaders, engineers, security as well.

Air India has traditionally been operating all-women crew flights for four decades now to various international and domestic operations. It has also operated the world's first all-women crew flight across the globe from Delhi to SFO, besides flying a similar flight charting the polar route.

In Air India Express and AirAsia India, the low-cost subsidiaries of Air India, over a third of the workforce comprises women. More importantly, several women play a key role in various departments—including in the domains of finance, commercial, human resources, customer happiness, flight training, technology, flight dispatch, engineering, safety, and operations control. The two airlines have a total of 97 women pilots.

Aloke Singh, CEO, Air India Express and President, AirAsia India said: “We strive for an equitable representation of women in our workforce and especially in our leadership. We are particularly proud to have women in key positions in roles that have traditionally been considered male bastions in aviation. We truly believe that diversity is a strength for us, driving collaboration and efficiency. This Women’s Day, we are grateful to all those who challenge gender stereotypes. We will continue to encourage gender diversity and will provide a platform for professional growth for our women colleagues. We urge more women to come forward and join us on our exciting journey as we transform Aviation in the country.”

Of the 90+ flights operated by all-women cockpit and cabin crew, Air India is flying 40 flights across domestic and international locations, whereas AI Express is operating 10 all-international flights to the Gulf route and AirAsia India is operating over 40 flights within India. Air India group would be operating across multiple international destinations, including Abu Dhabi, Birmingham, Dubai, Damman, Jeddah, Male, Muscat, Melbourne, Toronto, Paris, New York and London – indeed a crest in the annals of India’s civil aviation!

To commemorate International Women’s Day, Air India has also organised programmes aiming to celebrate, empower and inspire all. There would be sessions on financial decision-making, being an “Ally at Work”, and many inspiring engagements with women achievers and employees across the network at the workplace. Breast cancer screenings, using AI-led technology, are also being offered.  Air India Express has organised events at the Kochi International Airport. There would be an evening dedicated to the magnificence of art, where artist GS Smitha would be felicitated — a woman painter’s work imprinted as the airline’s tail art has literally been taken to the skies. Air India Express will also participate in an “All Women Bike Rally” organised by Thiruvananthapuram International Airport. AirAsia India will be giving all women travellers the opportunity to reserve complimentary Red Carpet Priority Services (Priority Check-in, Baggage and Boarding), for any bookings or check-in done on the AirAsia India website or mobile app between 8th and 15th March.

IIHM Hosts Global Conference On Women In Hospitality To Celebrate International Women's Day

The International Institute of Hotel Management (IIHM) organised the first-ever IIHM Global Conference on Women in Hospitality to celebrate International Women's Day. The event brought together women leaders and experts in the hospitality industry to share their experiences, insights and challenges. The event aimed to inspire and empower women to take up leadership roles in the hospitality industry and overcome gender barriers and challenges.

The IIHM Global Conference for Women in Hospitality 2023 was IIHM’s way of putting the spotlight on the United Nations’ SDG Goal No. 5 — Gender Equality.

The global conference consisted of six sessions, each focusing on a different aspect of women’s leadership in hospitality. The topics of the sessions were as follows:

·Women Leaders in the Hospitality Industry: Overcoming Gender Barriers and Challenges

·Female Entrepreneurship in Developing Countries

·Women Chefs of Today: Breaking the Male Bastion

·Diversity and Inclusion in the Hospitality Industry: Creating a Gender-Neutral Workplace

·Role of Women in Promoting Sustainability in Hospitality

·Women’s Leadership and Career Progression in the Hospitality Industry

A stellar cast of speakers from around the world shared its views on the riveting and highly relevant topics.

The first session featured women leaders in the hospitality industry who had broken barriers and overcome challenges to reach the top of their organisations. The session highlighted their journey and provided insights on how women can navigate the hospitality industry’s male-dominated environment. Participants included Ms Vita Whitaker, CEO, Whitco Catering and Bakery Equipment Ltd; TV Chef Rakhee Vaswani; Ankita Sheth, Founder, StayVista; and Christine Debouzy, Présidente de l'association Française des Femmes Pilotes. Ms Whitaker said: “Equality stems from within a person. The easiest would be to surround yourself with people who give you confidence and respect, like this powerful panel.” Speaking about the way forward, Ms Debouzy said: “Youth is filled with new ideas. There is a lot of work that is required for having a society which is truly equal. It is the ideas of the youth that can shape the society of the future.”

The second session focussed on female entrepreneurship in developing countries. Women entrepreneurs often face challenges in starting and running their businesses, and the hospitality industry is no exception. The session discussed ways to support and promote women entrepreneurs in the hospitality industry. Speakers included Aditi Handa, Co-Founder, The Baker’s Dozen; Shabnam Haldar, Director, IIHM Ahmedabad Campus; and award-winning chef and cookbook author Abhilasha Chandak. Ms Jyoti Mayal, President, Travel Agents Association of India pointed out, “Sustainability is equitable distribution of resources, for today and for the future. This cannot be achieved without Gender Equality.”

The third session featured women chefs who had broken the glass ceiling in hotel and restaurant kitchens, which have traditionally been dominated by men, and challenged conventional stereotypes. The session highlighted the challenges faced by women chefs and their contributions to the culinary world. “Everybody has to be mindful of the impact of what you say,” internationally renowned pastry chef Sarah Hartnett said during the session, “In any of the best kitchens that I have worked in, we have always had a balance of men and women. Once I don a chef’s coat, I am a chef, not a woman or a man.” Chef Naureen Shaikh, International Young Chef Olympiad 2023 Bronze Medallist, who was also part of the session, said, “I have always been supported by IIHM and through that, I have learnt that gender bias is actually just in the mind. Workwise, a bias cannot exist. If you work hard, you will succeed.” Truly inspiring words those!

Other sessions brought up a host of interesting subjects. If one session focused on the role of women in promoting sustainability in hospitality, another examined the challenges women face in career progression in the hospitality industry. Prominent participants included Mrs Sanjukta Bose, Director and Co-Founder of IIHM and Dr Madhu Chandok, Founder of PIP 2020. Kate Nicholls OBE, CEO, UKHospitality had a progressive and positive take: “Hospitality is a futureproof industry. As a sector there is a tremendous growth in opportunity. The jobs in the industry will evolve with the technology, as the industry is experience-centric. Therefore, it is important that hospitality degrees today teach the skills of the future.”

On the occasion of the conference, legendary hospitality educationist Professor David Foskett said: “Women enrich the workforce. We need to celebrate the role of women in the world of hospitality, and I thank IIHM for organising this conference which in a true sense celebrates the Power of Women.”

Dr Suborno Bose, Founder, IIHM and the force behind the pathbreaking global conference said, “The speakers today included the most illustrious and successful women of international repute in the hospitality industry. Following the United Nations’ theme of International Women's Day of DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality, IIHM has focused on Sustainability and Technology for providing a strong platform, where women can choose a career off the beaten path and join the world of International Hospitality.”

The IIHM Global Conference on Women in Hospitality 2023 emerged as an excellent platform for women leaders, experts, and aspiring professionals in the hospitality industry to come together, share their experiences, and learn from each other. The event was attended by several prominent personalities in the hospitality industry, including chefs, hoteliers, and entrepreneurs. Going forward, the event will inspire and empower women to take up leadership roles in the hospitality industry and break gender barriers.

The IIHM Global Conference on Women in Hospitality is a significant step towards promoting gender diversity and inclusion in the hospitality industry. The conference will help create awareness and highlight the contributions of women in the hospitality industry, as well as inspire more women to take up leadership roles.

Bharatmatrimony Creates A Compelling Film About Woman's Safety on Holi Festival

~’Some colours don’t wash away easy’ – India’s leading online matrimonial service’s poignant message carries profound truth this Holi and International Women’s Day~

With Holi & Women’s Day falling so close to each other, Matrimony.com highlighted the perfect message for this season – take a woman’s consent before playing Holi with her. On the occasion of International Women’s Day and Holi, India’s matrimony giant seeks to spotlight this issue through the campaign.

The video shows a woman washing her face which is full of Holi colours. As the colours fade, we see another face, radiating pain and unsettled anger – in reaction to misbehaviour and harassment meted out in the name of festivity. The campaign spotlights a disturbing statistic from Times of India – 34% of women who have faced harassment during Holi have stopped playing it. This video seeks to emphasise the need to make Holi safer for women by seeking their consent before celebrating with them and not use it as an excuse for any kind of physical assault.

Created in partnership with Wondrlab, the visual execution was inspired to bring to life this heart-wrenching reality behind the festival of colours. Bhavesh Kosambia and Rahul Chandwani, Content Leads at Wondrlab said, “We were shocked to realize that so many women had in fact stopped playing Holi due to this behaviour.”

Commenting on the underlying message, Arjun Bhatia, Chief Marketing Officer, Matrimony.com, said, “As a brand and platform, we have always focused on creating safer spaces for women. So when misbehaviour, assault and harassment are on the rise during a popular festival like Holi, we knew we had to urge the public to take notice and make a change especially when it’s falling on Women’s day. We hope this campaign stirs conversations and action towards making Holi safer, more colourful for Indian women, too”.
