VMware Report Warns Of Deepfake Attacks And Cyber Extortion

* Burned out security teams fight back against geopolitically motivated attacks and lateral movement inside networks

At Black Hat USA 2022, VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) released its eighth annual Global Incident Response Threat Report, which takes a deep dive into the challenges faced by security teams amid pandemic disruptions, burnout, and geopolitically motivated cyberattacks. Sixty-five percent of defenders state that cyberattacks have increased since Russia invaded Ukraine, according to report findings. The report also shines a light on emerging threats such as deepfakes, attacks on APIs, and cybercriminals targeting incident responders themselves.

“Cybercriminals are now incorporating deepfakes into their attack methods to evade security controls,” said Rick McElroy, principal cybersecurity strategist at VMware. “Two out of three respondents in our report saw malicious deepfakes used as part of an attack, a 13% increase from last year, with email as the top delivery method. Cybercriminals have evolved beyond using synthetic video and audio simply for influence operations or disinformation campaigns. Their new goal is to use deepfake technology to compromise organizations and gain access to their environment.”

Additional key findings from the report include:

Cyber pro burnout remains a critical issue. Forty-seven percent of incident responders said they experienced burnout or extreme stress in the past 12 months, down slightly from 51% last year. Of this group, 69% (versus 65% in 2021) of respondents have considered leaving their job as a result. Organizations are working to combat this, however, with more than two-thirds of respondents stating their workplaces have implemented wellness programs to address burnout.

Ransomware actors incorporate cyber extortion strategies. The predominance of ransomware attacks, often buttressed by e-crime groups’ collaborations on the dark web, has yet to let up. Fifty-seven percent of respondents have encountered such attacks in the past 12 months, and two-thirds (66%) have encountered affiliate programs and/or partnerships between ransomware groups as prominent cyber cartels continue to extort organizations through double extortion techniques, data auctions, and blackmail.

APIs are the new endpoint, representing the next frontier for attackers. As workloads and applications proliferate,23% of attacks now compromise API security. The top types of API attacks include data exposure (encountered by 42% of respondents in the past year), SQL and API injection attacks (37% and 34%, respectively), and distributed Denial-of-Service attacks (33%).

Lateral movement is the new battleground. Lateral movement was seen in 25% of all attacks, with cybercriminals leveraging everything from script hosts (49%) and file storage (46%) to PowerShell (45%), business communications platforms (41%), and .NET (39%) to rummage around inside networks. An analysis of the telemetry within VMware Contexa, a full-fidelity threat intelligence cloud that’s built into VMware security products, discovered that in April and May of 2022 alone, nearly half of intrusions contained a lateral movement event.

“In order to defend against the broadening attack surface, security teams need an adequate level of visibility across workloads, devices, users and networks to detect, protect, and respond to cyber threats,” said Chad Skipper, global security technologist at VMware. “When security teams are making decisions based on incomplete and inaccurate data, it inhibits their ability to implement a granular security strategy, while their efforts to detect and stop lateral movement of attacks are stymied due to the limited context of their systems.”

Despite the turbulent threat landscape and rising threats detailed in the report, incident responders are fighting back with 87% saying that they are able to disrupt a cybercriminal’s activities sometimes (50%) or very often (37%). They’re also using new techniques to do so. Three-quarters of respondents (75%) say they are now deploying virtual patching as an emergency mechanism. In every case, the more visibility defenders have across today’s widening attack surface, the better equipped they’ll be to weather the storm.

Methodology

VMware conducted an online survey about trends in the incident response landscape in June 2022, and 125 cybersecurity and incident response professionals from around the world participated. Percentages in certain questions exceed 100 percent because respondents were asked to check all that apply. Due to rounding, percentages in all questions may not add up to 100 percent. * TVS Emerald Aaranya located near Medavakkam, Chennai

* Project spread across 15.60 acres of green canopy

TVS Emerald launched its flagship villa property ‘TVS Emerald AARANYA’, Chennai’s first ever resort style villas in Vengaivasal, near Medavakkam. The company has registered a booking value of 100 crores with 60% inventory sold at the launch.

TVS Emerald AARANYA has been conceptualised based on the growing demand for exclusive premium villas and consumer insights which advocated the need for homes away from the hustle-bustle of the city. AARANYA—which means "lush green forest" in Sanskrit—offers luxury resort type villas in 2, 3 and 3.5 bedroom configurations that are nestled in nature.

An architectural design approach inspired by the biophilic aesthetic, the project has 62 % open space, a 15,000 square foot clubhouse, man-made pond and world class amenities. The community is in close proximity to the city’s largest shopping malls, hospitals, schools, IT & business hubs in OMR, and the upcoming metro route in Medavakkam.

Mr. Sriram Iyer, President & CEO, TVS Emerald, said, “Homebuyers today are looking for larger homes with quick access to open green spaces and the promise of a balanced lifestyle. Covid has catalysed a trend where people have started to migrate towards lower-density suburbs. This lifestyle shift prompted us to launch TVS Emerald AARANYA, a luxury villa development with independent ownership of land and villa, by taking cognizance of the inherent need of urban homebuyers.

He further added: “The industry is witnessing an increase in demand for properties and this is a welcome sign for the Real Estate sector. In the upcoming quarters, TVS Emerald has multiple launches lined up in Bangalore and Chennai. The success of TVS Emerald Aaranya truly validates our confidence in expanding business in the coming years”

Meesho App Now Available In Kannada And Other Indian Languages

* Millions of Meesho customers can now shop conveniently in languages like Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia

Meesho, India’s fastest-growing internet commerce company, today announced the addition of eight new vernacular languages to its platform in line with its mission to democratize internet commerce for everyone. The move comes just ahead of the festive season, when millions of users from all corners of the country are expected to transact on the platform. These additional languages are Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and Odia. Meesho customers can now select their preferred language for accessing account and product information, placing and tracking orders, and making payments on Android phones.

Last year, Meesho introduced Hindi as a language option on the platform, which has seen a high adoption rate of 20% so far. Majority of Meesho customers come from tier 2+ cities like Ahmedabad, Vadodara & Jamshedpur and non-Hindi speaking states, where English or Hindi may not always be the language of choice. This latest initiative will boost Meesho’s adoption in these areas and further simplify online shopping experience for millions of customers.

To ensure an accurate and authentic experience in these new languages, Meesho derived key insights from user research and worked closely with expert linguists. The team chose commonly used words over full translation to mirror everyday language and make the shopping experience seamless. For example - literal translation for the word ‘required’ in Hindi is ‘anivarya’ but ‘zaroori’ is more widely understood. In total, around 33,000 English words were translated into each of these eight languages.

"It is important to note that ~50% of our users are new to e-commerce and have probably never transacted on such platforms before. By introducing vernacular languages on the platform, Meesho aims to eliminate language barriers. This is a natural step in our journey of becoming the single shopping destination for the next billion users in India. Our teams have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that the platform is 100% accurate and relevant in all these 8 vernacular languages,” said Sanjeev Barnwal, Founder & CTO, Meesho.

Recently, Meesho became India’s fastest e-commerce company to reach 100 million transacting users. Since March 2021, the transacting user base on the platform has surged ~5.5X,while the assortment has grown 9X to ~72 million during the same period. Customers from tier 2+ markets have been key drivers of this growth, accounting for ~80% of all shoppers.

About Meesho:

Meesho is India’s fastest growing internet commerce platform. Meesho is democratizing internet commerce and bringing a range of products and new customers online. The Meesho marketplace provides small businesses, which includes SMBs, MSMEs and individual entrepreneurs, access to millions of customers, selection from over 700+ categories, pan-India logistics, payment services and customer support capabilities to efficiently run their businesses on the Meesho ecosystem.

The partnership under the project— Capacity Building by MSDE in Microsoft Digital Productivity Skills aims to enhance the functional computer literacy of nearly 2.5 million civil servants of Government of India (GoI). The project will digitally empower them to provide efficient and effective citizen centric services to the vulnerable and underprivileged sections of the society. It will enable them to deliver last mile social welfare services.

The MoU was signed and exchanged in the august presence of Shri Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary MSDE; Shri Adil Zainulbhai, Chairman, CBC; Shri Praveen Pardeshi, Member Admin, CBC and Mr. Ashutosh Chadha, Group Head & Director, Government Affairs, Microsoft India.

Within the project, the training will include job roles such as Section Officers, Assistant Section Officers, Clerks, Upper Division Clerks, Lower Division Clerks, Under Secretaries, Deputy Secretaries, and equivalent officers at senior, junior and supporting levels in the central government entities.  CBC has undertaken the capacity building plans for the ministries of Defence, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Expenditure, Finance, Social Justice, Civil Aviation, Ports and Shipping, and Labour. One of the major competency gaps identified among these job roles was the lack of digital productivity application skills needed while working on Microsoft Office tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint presentation, at a professional level. Therefore, training programs under the partnership will be enabled for the officials to upgrade their digital productivity skills, so that they can fulfil their roles effectively in various ministries.

Lauding the partnership, Shri Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary, MSDE, expressed “Today’s collaboration is in line with the initiative envisioned by our Hon’ble Prime Minister- Mission Karmayogi, it is aligned towards the development of our civil servants. By emphasising on programmes that drive digital literacy, we will be able to provide hassle free services to our citizens and bring transparency into day-to-day business. Our aim is to develop citizen-friendly and business-friendly policies. Technology has become an integral part of our everyday lives, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are now an essential component of our work life. Therefore, it is imperative that our workforce is trained in these programmes, and I am certain that with this alliance, we will be able to make Mission Karmayogi, a successful scheme.”

Shri Adil Zainulbhai, Chairman, CBC stated, “Honorable PMs vision of Mission Karmayogi is to strengthen the capability of each and every civil servant. One of the key capabilities is being competent in various digital technologies for day-to-day work. The collaboration with MSDE and Microsoft will allow civil servants to be trained digitally at a time of their own choosing. It will enhance their capabilities and allow them to be more effective”

Shri Ashutosh Chadha, Group Head & Director, Government Affairs, Microsoft India, said, “Every job will increasingly require digital skills and we are committed to creating more skilling opportunities in the country. We are privileged to partner with Capacity Building Commission (CBC) and Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE). Through this programme, we are aiming to empower central government employees on key digital skills and amplify the vision of Digital India. This initiative will not only drive more productivity but will also enable ease of doing business with more digital solutions.”

As part of the collaboration, Microsoft will develop an online, self-paced learning course on Microsoft Office 365 digital productivity suite offerings for MSDE, that would enable MSDE to provide digital skills training to the officials in central government ministries and departments. The courses will be created under two categories - Beginners and Advanced courses of 12 hours duration each and the learners would be enabled with access to Advanced course after receiving the certificate of completion in Beginners course. Microsoft would host the course content on Microsoft Community Training portal (MCT) which the learner can easily access.

MSDE and CBC would enable free access to the developed course content from Microsoft to officials from various central government organisations and departments in collaboration with CBC through MCT. MSDE would play a vital role in cooperation and collaboration between the parties towards successful deployment of the online self-paced training program for the government officers through MCT. In addition, MSDE would monitor the project progress and keep track on the training outcomes.

It would also encourage all the Ministries, Departments and Organisations (MDOs) to make it mandatory for all the Section Officers and Assistant Section Officers to be certified in digital productivity skills from the project for their career progression, as per the National Training Policy.
