The plant was inaugurated by Shri Bhupesh Bhagel, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. The entire event was commemorated through video conferencing. The ceremony was also addressed by Hon’ble Minister for Urban Development Department, Govt of Chhattisgarh’s Shri Shiv Kumar Daharia,   Hon’ble Mayor Mr. Aijaz Dhebar and Mr. Saurabh Kumar, Municipal Commissioner of Raipur.

As per a 15-year contract between the Municipal Corporation of Raipur and Delhi MSW Solution Limited (A Ramky Company), the treatment plant has been set up in Sakri, a district located at 15 km North of Raipur city. The plant is spread across 67 acres of land. The company has also built a processing plant and scientific landfill at the location and Ramky is currently operating as per PPP (Public Private Partnership) model. The total project cost is INR 197 crores, of which INR 127 crores has been used in setting up the processing plant.

Raipur being the capital of Chhattisgarh has a diverse population of 17 Lakhs and experienced immense growth in recent times. This growth, in turn, has created room for the establishment of a centralized mechanism that would enable a door to door waste collection and Solid Waste Management. Additionally, in the ongoing event of the global pandemic, waste management holds the utmost significance. It is highly imperative that bio-medical waste is being handled by professionals especially in today’s times where the nation is battling COVID-19, a highly contagious viral disease. Ramky Enviro, a stalwart in waste management services is facilitating the same by providing state-of-the-art facilities PAN India. The company is also actively and effectively handling bio-medical waste that is generated by hospitals which further helps to slow down the spread of COVID-19.

Commenting on the inauguration of the new venture, Mr. Masood Mallick, Joint Managing Director of REEL, said, “We are extremely pleased to announce the launch of Ramky’s largest plant in the State of Chhattisgarh that has the capacity of managing 700 to 1000 tons of waste per day. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Shri Bhupesh Bhagel, Hon’ble CM of Chhattisgarh, The Hon’ble Minister for Urban Development Shri Shiv Kumar Daharia and the Hon’ble Mayor Shri Ajaz Dhebar and the Commissioner Shri Sourabh Kumar, other officials and non-officials of Municipal Corporation of Raipur for their continuous guidance and cooperation in our mission of providing a clean environment to the citizens of our nation.” “This facility marks as a milestone in the progress trajectory of Chhattisgarh as it holds the potential to be the state’s first waste-to-power generation plant.” He further added.

Speaking about the launch of the new plant, Mr Aijaz Dhebar, Mayor of Raipur said, “We are delighted to have witnessed the inauguration of Chhattisgarh’s largest solid waste management plant, particularly when the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread and its impact on human health plus the economy is intensifying with every passing day. Companies like Ramky Enviro play a key role in ensuring maximum hygiene. We look forward to a successful collaboration that not only provides us with a state-of-the-art solid waste management plant but also holds the potential to enable power generation that can further be utilized for the city of Raipur.”

As per the terms of the agreement, as of today, door to door waste collection, transportation is being done by Ramky Enviro from all 70 wards. In the process, 220 Tata ace vehicles, 29 portable compactors, 6 hook lifters, 4 refuse compactors, 6 tippers, and 2 JCBs have been in use. All door to door waste arrives at the 16 transfer stations and empty the vehicle in a portable compactor located there. Which are then transported to the processing plant with the help of large hook lifters.

Huawei Ranks No. 6 Among World’s Most Innovative Companies 2020

Global leading ICT infrastructure provider Huawei has ranked No. 6 in BCG’s recent released list of the 50 Most Innovative Companies in 2020, moved up by 42 places. This is the highest ranking for the tech giant since it first made the list in 2012. According to the report by Boston Consulting Group, Apple, Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Huawei occupy the top 6 spots in the new ranking, followed by Alibaba, IBM, Sony and Facebook.

The ranking is based on a survey of 2,500 global innovation executives and assesses companies’ performance on four dimensions of Global “Mindshare”, Industry Disruption, Industry Peer View and Value Creation. This year, BCG also added a new scoring dimension that captures each company’s variety and intensity of boundary breaking, by assessing its ability to breach established industry entry barriers and play in an array of markets outside its own.

As the world’s largest supplier of telecommunications equipment, Huawei has continuously invested over 10% of its annual revenue back into R&D. In 2019, the company’s R&D expenditure totalled CNY131,659 million, accounting for 15.3% of its total revenue.

In terms of 5G, Huawei invested 4 billion USD in the past decade, which makes it the global leader in this next-generation technology. To further commercial adoption and promote new innovation in 5G applications, the company has established 5G joint innovation centers together with carriers worldwide.

According to its annual report, the tech giant is shifting itself from an innovation 1.0 model to Innovation 2.0, which means breakthroughs in basic theory and developing new basic technologies, driven by shared vision for the future.

In the global fight against COVID-19, Huawei doubled down its innovation efforts and launched the Anti-COVID-19 Partner Program that focuses on AI, remote office, smart healthcare and online education, to support the fight against the pandemic. Its AI-assisted diagnosis, for example, could output CT quantification results in seconds and help frontline medical staff detect COVID-19 cases.

“When we began the research for this 14th edition of BCG’s Most Innovative Companies report, COVID-19 had not yet emerged. As we explored the data and interacted with clients, however, it became clear that this year’s core findings—about the advantages of scale and the imperative for serial innovation—may be even more relevant today as innovation leaders need to adapt to rapidly shifting patterns of supply, demand, consumer behavior, and ways of doing business,” wrote the author of the BCG report.

Caregivers Caught Between COVID and Cancer Patients in India

By Dr. V. Satya Suresh Attili, Head Medical affairs, EON

It’s a double jolt for the cancer patients. While they are coming in terms with the fact that “they have cancer” and accepting- Covid pandemic started gripping them to suffocate.

The scientific dilemma and Oncology body recommendations

The initial approach of deprioritised, delayed, and discontinued oncology management is slowly getting better. Thanks to various global bodies, which worked relentlessly to come up with guidelines in short possible time (with more logic and moderate evidence- whatever they can gather), the oncologists today are in much better informed to take therapeutic decisions. The majority consensus is “Official advice is that urgent cancer care can continue, but other treatments should be rationed and adapted”

Social/logistic factors

The “lockdown” too have impacted the logistics of cancer medications and mobility of the patient’s to seek timely treatment. The redeployment of personnel, beds, and equipment to COVID-19 wards in few regions also contributed to the scarcity of the “quality Oncology care” on occasions.

The Oncologist Dilemma

As most of the recommendations as quoted in “The lancet Oncology” are “inconsistent, and not evidence-based—multidisciplinary teams are being put in the unenviable position of making best guesses for each patient.” In my practice at least few dozens of “operable cases have become “inoperable” with inferior disease outcome- It pains. With resource constraints “risk of delayed cancer treatment with disease progression” vs “Contracting COVID due to immunosuppression” is extremely challenging. There is no “best course of action” for any oncologist and these decisions are not easy to make

TESTING FOR COVID-19: What information is available on testing for COVID-19?

The corporates insist on ”test everyone” – and its more of a paranoid reaction- I believe which can potentially waste the limited testing resources and the ones in real need may suffer. While few of the governments say “test only if symptomatic” – which is more into “dismissive behaviour” that leads to undertesting and faster viral spread. Having said that “it is difficult to draw a line” and balance. The only hope is to enhance the “testing capabilities”
Where does cancer screening stand

Well - I feel its bit easier to answer. If low risk of disease/ conventional screening- its best to wait. If its high risk screening – well you may still wait based on the ”level of risk”. But for sure “there should not be any community camps” that can potentially spread the COVID like wildfire- and the  lives you save by early detection are mathematically lesser compared to the risk of viral spread.

Are the rules Same
What are the recommendations for general care of patients with cancer?
ASCO encourages anyone caring for patients with cancer to follow the existing CDC guidance where possible:
General health care facility and health care professional guidance
Clinical care guidance
Home care guidance
High-risk subpopulation guidance- details can be found https://www.asco.org/asco-coronavirus-information/care-individuals-cancer-during-covid-19

IS the same rule true for surgery/chemotherapy/radiation/BMT etc
Definitely not. There are matured and logical guidelines available from various reputed bodies and the detailed discussion on this is beyond the scope of this article- which can be browsed trhough various links ex- https://www.esmo.org/guidelines/cancer-patient-management-during-the-covid-19-pandemic

Where does technology help
Things like wearables for remote health monitoring, telemedicine, POC testing, AI driven screening tools and what not – have surely helped the oncologists in this pandemic and paved the “way to future”

What about palliative care and home care
Probably these are worst affected. Stress is more disturbing than cancer itself- They are already counting the days and trying to put their best to sustain the quality of life. But the logistics of medications, and nursing care had impacted them as I see in my practice. The impact is worse in rural regions from where two thirds of my patients come from.

Cancer vs Covid deaths- extract from “The lancer Oncology”
A 5–10% decrease in survival in high-income countries has been predicted, which will account for hundreds of thousands of excess deaths, dwarfing those caused by COVID-19—but we are missing precise data on mortality that can be used to anticipate future cancer care needs.
