New Land Rover Defender Reaches 1.2 Millions Kilometre Test and Development Milestone

To celebrate World Land Rover Day, Land Rover has announced plans for the new Defender to complete a final phase of field testing with the Tusk Trust, on location in Kenya.

A Defender prototype wearing a unique camouflage will experience life at the Borana Conservancy as part of Land Rover’s 15-year partnership with the Tusk Trust.

The prototype will tow heavy loads, wade through rivers and carry supplies across unforgiving terrain in a series of real-world trials at the 14 000 hectare reserve.

By the time the new Defender makes its public debut later this year, it will have passed more than 45 000 individual tests in some of the most extreme environments on earth. Land Rover engineers have taken the test fleet to the 50-degree heat of the desert, the sub 40-degree cold of the Arctic, as well as up to 10 000 ft altitude of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado to ensure the new Defender will take everyday life in its stride, for even its most adventurous customers.

Nick Rogers, Director Group Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “In addition to the extensive simulation and rig testing, we’ve driven new Defender 1.2 million km across all terrains and in extreme climates to ensure that it is the toughest and most capable Land Rover ever made. The incredible opportunity to put it to the test in the field, supporting operations at the Borana Conservancy in Kenya, with Tusk, will allow our engineers to verify that we are meeting this target as we enter the final phase of our development programme.”

With on-road dynamics honed at the Nürburgring facility in Germany and all-terrain credentials tested on the muddy roads of Eastnor, UK, the rocky trails of Moab in Utah, and the sand dunes of Dubai, the new 4x4 promises to bring unparalleled breadth of capability and new levels of comfort and driveability to the Defender family.

The new Defender has been designed and developed in the UK, at Gaydon, home to Land Rover’s world-class design, engineering and testing facilities. The new home of global Defender production will be Land Rover’s recently opened state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Nitra, Slovakia.

Land Rover has been an official partner of the Tusk Trust wildlife conservation charity for 15 years, helping to reach some of the world’s most remote locations. News of the testing initiative has been announced to mark World Land Rover Day, which is celebrated on 30 April every year to mark the world premiere of the original Land Rover at the Amsterdam Motor Show on this day in 1948.

TVS Motor Company's Revenue Grew by 19.3%, Operating EBITDA Grew by 22%, Total Sales Grew by 12.9% in FY 2018-19


TVS Motor Company, today reported its financial results for the year 2018-19.   With total sales of 39.14 Lakh units for the year, the Company’s total revenue excluding Excise Duty / GST grew by 19.3% to Rs. 18,217.5 Crores. During the year, the Company strengthened its presence in the commuter motorcycle segment with the successful launch of TVS Radeon.

Q4 PERFORMANCE (January 2019 – March 2019):

TVS Motor Company reported a growth of 9.2% with total revenue excluding Excise Duty / GST going up from Rs. 4,016.8 Crores in the fourth quarter of 2017-18 to Rs. 4,387.6 Crores in the fourth quarter of 2018-19. The Company reported Profit Before Tax (PBT) of Rs. 183.9 Crores and Profit After Tax of Rs. 134.3 Crores for the quarter under review.

EBITDA for the Quarter ended March 2019 is Rs. 308.1 Crores compared to Rs. 295.2 Crores for the quarter ended March 2018, a growth of 4.4% .  EBITDA for the quarter is at 7.0%.

The Company’s Profit Before Tax (PBT) for the quarter ended March 2019 is Rs. 183.9 Crores as against Rs. 192.1 Crores for the quarter ended March 2018.

Profit After Tax (PAT) for the quarter ended March 2019 is Rs. 133.8 Crores as against Rs. 165.6 Crores reported for the quarter ended March 2018.

During the quarter ended March 2019, the overall two-wheeler and three-wheeler sales including exports grew from 8.89 Lakh units in the quarter ended March 2018 to 9.07 Lakh units.   Motorcycle sales grew by 8.4% from 3.46 Lakh units in the quarter ended March 2018 to 3.75 Lakh units in fourth quarter of 2018 - 19.  Scooter sales for the quarter ended 31st March 2019 is 2.71 Lakh units against the sale of 2.80 Lakh units in the fourth quarter of 2017-18. The Company’s total export of two-wheelers and three-wheelers is 1.96 Lakh units in the quarter under review against 1.61 Lakh units in the quarter ended March 2018 registering a growth of 21.7%.  Three-wheeler sales grew by 44.8 % from 0.29 Lakh units in the fourth quarter of 2017-18 to 0.42 Lakh units in the quarter under review.

FULL YEAR PERFORMANCE (April 2018 to March 2019):

FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE:

Total revenue excluding Excise Duty for the year recorded a growth of 19.3% increasing from     Rs. 15,274.4 Crores in the year ended March 2018 to Rs. 18,217.5 Crores in the year ended   March 2019.

Operating EBITDA increased from Rs. 1,175.0 Crores during the year ended March 2018 to   Rs. 1,433.3 Crores in the year ended March 2019 registering a growth of 22.0%.

Profit before tax (PBT) for the year ended March 2019 is Rs.  961.0 Crores as against Rs. 878.6 Crores for the year ended March 2018, which included notional fair valuation gain of Rs. 68.3 Crores and one-time GST discount of Rs. 16.5 Crores.  Hence the current year PBT of Rs. 961.0 Crores when compared with operating PBT of Rs. 826.8 Crores for the year ended March 2018 after adjusting the above item represents an increase of 16.2 %.

Profit after tax (PAT) for the year ended March 2019 is Rs. 670.1 Crores as against Rs. 662.6 Crores registered in the year ended March 2018.  Operating PAT for the year ended March 2018 prior to consideration of fair valuation gains and one-time GST discount (net of tax) is Rs. 606.7 Crores. The growth in operating PAT for the year ended March 2019 is 10.5%.

SALES:
During the year ended March 2019, the overall two-wheeler sales of TVS Motor Company, including exports grew by 11.6% increasing from 33.67 Lakh units registered in the year 2017-18 to 37.57 Lakh units in the year 2018-19. Motorcycle sales during the fiscal year grew by 15.0% increasing from 13.56 Lakh units in the year ended March 2018 to 15.59 Lakh units in the year ended March 2019. Scooter sales grew by 14.6% increasing from 11.35 Lakh units in the year ended March 2018 to 13.01 Lakh units in the year ended March 2019. Three-wheeler sales increased by 57.6% from 0.99 Lakh units in the year ended March 2018 to 1.56 Lakh units in the year ended March 2019. The total export of the Company recorded a growth of 32.8% increasing from 5.74 Lakh units in the year ended March 2018 to 7.62 Lakh units in the year ended   March 2019.

INTERIM DIVIDENDS:

The Board of Directors of the Company declared two interim dividends for the year 2018-19. The total dividend paid for the year ended March 2019 aggregated to Rs. 3.50 per share (350%) on 47,50,87,114 equity shares of Re.1/- each. The Board does not recommend any further dividend for the year under consideration.

AWARDS:
TVS Motor Company won the Two-Wheeler Manufacturer of the Year Award at Car and Bike India Awards 2019 and Excellence in Business Performance at The Economic Times Awards, Tamil Nadu 2019.  During the year, TVS NTORQ 125, swept the prestigious Scooter of the Year 2019 awards from leading publication houses including Autocar, Bike India and Times Auto Awards. TVS Radeon won multiple awards - namely Bike of the Year upto 125cc Commuter Bike of the Year at Motor Vikatan Award 2019 and Bike of the Year up to 125cc at Exhibit Auto Tech Awards 2019. TVS Apache RR 310 won Bike of the Year up to 400cc at Car and Bike India Awards 2019.

The Company bagged the prestigious awards for Corporate Excellence and Corporate Social Responsibility at the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2018.  It was also awarded Green Era Award for Sustainability & Quality and Business Excellence Award at the International Awards by Otherways Management & Consulting, France, along with Best CSR initiative (Two-Wheeler) at Autocar India Awards 2019.

What is the future of technology? Will it create or destroy value for society?

Technology and AI are being embraced like the Holy Grail. Every manager is gravitating towards it. You ask why, and people will say:

It will make us more proficient; give us more leisure time,
It will replace inefficient, highly paid workers,
It will increase profits,
We will be able to serve our customers and employees better,
It will help us become healthier.
It will allow us to do much more with less.
The list is much bigger and growing.

Customer Value Foundation is co-hosting The International Conference on Creating Value for the Future of AI and Society in Kobe, Japan on October 15-17, 2019 along with the University of Kobe and japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. On the other hand, digital addresses give an identity to homeless people. Credit ratings can now be done for the bottom of the pyramid people through their mobile interaction analysis, to see if they fit the mode to give a loan to.

Manufacturing, jobs and people, labour, leisure time

Jobs and Manufacturing: Great advances in productivity and cost reduction is seen.

We see a short term reduction in costs when robots replace humans. Less complaining, less downtime and coffee breaks. However, we soon find people who are without jobs and unable to buy, reducing sales.

As robotisation happens, more and more leisure time will be available, spawning new industries for using leisure time and entertainment. Labour customisation will happen. Choices will be limited by people who define what you should be.

As jobs are lost, our economic thinking might change. Human beings will have to redefine ‘worth’ and humanness when they cannot earn. Will such changes force us to re-think what it means to be a human?

The brain’s ability to analyse problems reduces due to under usage, when analytical tools available start doing the brain’s work. This even happens with convenience tools. When we cannot find someone’s email address, we often stop instead of sending a snail mail or a courier to the land address, or even make a phone call. The brain will need more exercise as technology takes over the brain’s functions.

Society, its regulation and control, its readiness to absorb technology and reaction to technology are all issues to be tackled. Aging and managing humans will be impacted by technology.

Customers, their wellbeing, their buying and selling, retail etc. will change and the control will pass on to machines. Will there be a world of exchange with new technology?

Value recuperation by better collaboration of technology and society is another important factor. This is one of the most important positive aspects of technology. It enables, even empowers human beings to be more with less.

Transport and Travel: Teleporting, drones, individual travel pods, less waiting, faster movement. What do we do with our extra time? What happens to our concept of enjoying transport and travel, if we can see and experience everything with VR?

Healthcare: The future will bring in more testing of humans as medical science advances. Testing for microbe distribution in the intestines, to cancer screening, to genetic defects and so on will become possible. Eventually, nanobots will put energy into the body, and food will become passé, making us intestine and stomach free. Oxygen will go into our cells through nanobots, making the heart redundant. We will be a skeleton supported by muscles.

Privacy: We are all facing this issue, and are now afraid to use Alexa, or give information, and are shocked when our private information is gathered by Google et al, like our trip pictures, itineraries, etc. and worse still shared with others. Technology incursion into our homes and daily chores is an issue.

Stores know all about us, and can try to manipulate us.

Our privacy can be saved by ‘Safe Pod’ (by Berners Lee, founder of the internet) or the HAT project discussed by Irene Ng at the 1st Global Conference on Creating Value.

Quality of Human Interaction: Texting and chats are replacing face to face meetings. The number of your Facebook friends is no sign of true friends you have. Industrialization, urbanization and mass media have undermined the communal basis of society. More and more personalization is seen and this is as an evil because it makes consumption nuclear, recognizes and values the individuality in each of us. Technology (Big Data, algorithm) leverages individuality at the detriment of collectivity, says Pierre Nicholas Schwab. How do we change this before technology redefines our humanness? Technology also leads to loss of control for each of us. Will this mean individuality will be accompanied by mass cloning ideas?

The net is making us disconnected and single and lonely, just as it makes us more connected!

Unintended and unforeseen consequences: such as killer and evil robots. Or the monkey with the human brain put in by Chinese scientists? Or cloning?

Humans do not have to take responsibility for their actions: Systems that can use machine learning to predict and help solve problems can also be used to purposely control and act in ways that will make people redundant. The danger happens when machine intelligence exceeds our ability to understand it, or it becomes superior intelligence, we should take care to not blindly follow its recommendation and absolve ourselves of all responsibility, says Chris Kirby, Voices.com

We cannot forget cyber-attacks, weapons of mass destruction (such as star war weapons) with new technology. We also have to be wary of technology poacher’s intent on making money for themselves or destroying value for others.

There are many more subjects. The reader can imagine the wider canvas and how we and society can move forward in tandem with technology.

Technology has so many positive ramifications for the future of humankind, from health to travel, to time management to convenience. There is much constructive power of technology, too.

Technology can be very helpful and positive for us and at the same time, a weapon of destruction. For a more balanced view of technology, watch two TED talks: Kevin Kelly ‘How AI can bring on a second Industrial Revolution’ and Kai-Fu Lee ‘How AI can save our humanity’.

We need to regulate technology. Who should do so? Governments, People or Corporate and technology leaders. This has to happen in a slow analog situation to avoid the knee jerk quick (what Kahnemann calls the instinctual portion of the brain) reaction, to prevent those only exposed to the digital world (the youngest people) to think only technology, to prevent Governments and corporates to look only at their interests. This is a tall order but must be done. What is the meaning of ethics in an evolving technological world, or should we live by our current ethics?

Technology regulations formed democratically are the first step. It requires listening and introspection. Perhaps we should have advanced courses on controlling AI and AI safety! Perhaps we should not become lazy with all these conveniences, and use our brains to be vigilant and be able to go to authorities overseeing the dominance of humans over technology for corrective action.

We should remember technology does not ruin our lives, we do.

Technology is NOT the source of all evils, but has to be managed to be the source of our positive future. Martijn Rademakers of University of Amsterdam said: ‘Tech’ nowadays is sometimes like a speed boat without a rudder: it moves fast forward but not necessarily into the direction we want. When it hits the reef it will be too late. We need a helmsman – i.e., thinking leadership. Let us balance the good with the potential bad, and use the good and manage the bad. Gartner Identifies Trends in PaaS & Platform Architecture for 2019


Gartner, Inc. has identified the key trends impacting platform as a service (PaaS) technologies and platform architecture in 2019 and beyond.

“The trends we see in PaaS both reflect and drive the trends in the continuous transformation of cloud computing and digital business,” said Yefim Natis, distinguished research vice president at Gartner. “As organizations embrace cloud platforms, they find themselves facing a variety of changes.”

In order to provide guidance in the fast-growing market for cloud platform services, Gartner has highlighted the key trends that application leaders should consider as they make decisions on technology, budget and organization.

Trend No.1: A Booming PaaS Market

As of 2019, the total PaaS market contains more than 360 vendors, offering more than 550 cloud platform services in 21 categories. Gartner expects that, from 2018 to 2022, the market will double in size and that PaaS will be the prevailing platform delivery model moving forward.

“All PaaS segments show healthy growth rates. However, the market remains short on standardization, established practices and sustained leadership. Vendors need to address those issues in a timely manner to encourage adoption by more risk-averse organizations,” Mr. Natis said.

Trend No.2: The Cloud Platform Continuum

PaaS capabilities aim to support the role of a cloud platform. However, all cloud services including infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and software as a service (SaaS) can be key factors for a platform. Together, those services constitute the cloud platform continuum. To look for and recognize the opportunities for platform-based innovation across the entire spectrum of cloud services will soon be part of every cloud strategy.

“Organizations that embrace the potential roles and unique differentiators of IaaS, PaaS and instrumented SaaS in the spectrum of cloud platform capabilities stand to extract the greatest value from their cloud investments,” Mr. Natis said.

Trend No.3: Cloud-Native Design

New technology architectures arise, designed to natively reflect the essentials of the cloud experience: agility, continuous innovation, fast delivery. Recent examples of cloud-native technologies include serverless platforms, microvirtual machines and low-code offerings. “‘Cloud computing’ is evolving to become just ‘computing,’ and cloud-native design in new investments is becoming pervasive across organizations, use cases and deployment models,” Mr. Natis added.

Trend No. 4: Enterprise IT Becomes a Service Provider to the Business Organization

“What we see is that central IT starts to provide the business organization with enablement services such as platforms, training, consulting and support. They are also in charge of overall governance,” said Mr. Natis. This development is driven by the combined impact of innovations such as low-code tools, machine-learning-assisted development and self-service consumption models, which lead to a redefinition of the role of central IT — away from a “factory” delivery and towards a “service provider” approach.

The First of the Class of 05 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), named “ICGS- Priyadarshini”


The First of the Class of 05 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), named “ICGS- Priyadarshini” built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), Kolkata was commissioned at Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh today by Additional Director-General Kripa Ram Nautiyal, PTM, TM, CGC (ES), in the gracious presence of Inspector General Sivamani Paramesh, PTM, TM, COMCG (East), Commandant (JG) Mahavir Singh, Commanding Officer, ICGS Priyadarshini. The ceremony was attended by Rear Admiral VK Saxena, IN (Retd), Chairman & Managing Director, GRSE and other senior officials of the Indian Coast Guard and GRSE.

The ship ICGS Priyadarshini is the first in the series. The remaining four ships are in advanced stages of construction. The FPV is a medium range surface vessel capable of operations in the maritime zones of India. These powerful, fuel-efficient platforms are designed to perform multipurpose operations like patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching and rescue operations. The entire design of these FPVs has been developed in-house by GRSE as per requirements specified by Indian Coast Guard. The ship is 50 meters long, 7.5 meters wide with a displacement of around 308 tonnes. It is designed for a maximum speed of 34 knots with an endurance of more than 1500 nautical miles, and is equipped with 3 main engines with advanced control systems, water jet units and an integrated bridge system integrating all communication and navigation systems. The ships are also fitted with 40/60 gun as main armament and will also have improved habitability features with fully air-conditioned modular accommodation for 35 personnel.

The FPV designs which are exclusive to GRSE are an improvisation on the Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPVs) built by the Shipyard for the Indian Coast Guard, few years ago. Over the years, GRSE has established capabilities for in-house design and shipbuilding and has made significant contributions to the indigenous warship construction program in India. The Design R&D Unit of GRSE, has been recognised by Dept. of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India.

Having hit the 100 warship delivery mark in Mar 19, GRSE currently has a strong order book of around Rs. 22,000Crores equipping the shipyard with a deep pool of revenue-generating projects.14 shipswhich include03 P17A, 01 ASWC, 04 Nos. Survey Vessels (Large), 02 LCUs, 04 FPVs are in various stages of construction and are expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard accordingly. Three ships of Project P17A Advanced Stealth Frigates are being constructed using Integrated Construction Technology, 3D Modelling concepts and latest software like Aveva Marine and NAPA.GRSE has also been declared successful bidder in competitive bidding for another 08 ASW- SWC ships for the Indian Navy, the Contract for which is expected to be signed shortly.
