AMD Subsidiary Building $4.2 billion on New York Facility

AMD's manufacturing subsidiary -- Global Foundries is building a $4.2 billion chip manufacturing facility in upstate New York. With its new facility, the AMD spin-off will now be able to directly compete with archrivals Intel and other semiconductor manufacturers.
According to AMD semiconductor manufacturing remains expensive, and hence outsourcing will increase. However, analysts said it will be difficult for the New York chip foundry arm business (fab) to compete with Taiwanese industry leaders.

Chip manufacturers have posted significant losses in recent quarters because they have been unable to run at capacity.

AMD had launched Globalfoundries as a JV with Abu Dhabi-backed Advanced Technology Investment Company in May, a move that led to Intel accusing it of breaching a 2001 patent cross-license agreement.

The U.S. Company holds a 34.2% stake in the venture and ATIC holds the remaining 65.8%. Their New York foundry is scheduled to begin production in 2012, said the company.

Intel will launch two CPUs under the Celeron E3000 series

Chipmaker Intel Inc during the third Quarter of year 2009 is likely to replace the current Celeron E1000 series and is lining up production of its new 45nm Celeron E3000 series CPUs.

In a report said that the company will launch two CPUs under the Celeron E3000 series – christened the Celeron E3200 and E3300 – during the third quarter. The company has said that the two CPUs will boast of core frequencies of 2.4GHz, and 2.5GHz, respectively. They would also feature 1MB L2 cache, 800MHz FSB, and 65W TDP. Celeron E3000 series CPUs will support VT-x virtualization.

By Quarter 4, the company is also likely to come out with a new Core i7 CPU. The Core i7 960 CPU will debut with a core frequency of 3.2GHz.

It is expected that the Celeron E3000 CPUs will touch the 10% mark in the fourth quarter overall entry-level CPU shipments.

Meanwhile, the 65nm Celeron E1000s stand the chance of plummeting from 20% in the third quarter to 10% in the fourth. It has been forecast that Intel's Celeron 400 series will account for 18% of shipments in the fourth quarter, Atom D510 around 2%, Atom 330 around 50% and Atom 230 around 10%.

It is also foreseen that Celeron E3000 will jump to 21% during the first quarter of 2010, while Celeron E1000s might get wiped away from the market. The Celeron 400 series will account for around 15%, Atom D510 25%, Atom 330 27% and both Atom D410 and Atom 230 6% each, it is expected.

Continuing with its launches, Intel might also unveil its dual-core Atom D510 CPU for net tops. This is also expected during the fourth quarter, while a single-core Atom D410 CPU will be rolled out during the first quarter of 2010.

Intel invests big in US; Just as others cut costs

Chip giant Intel is swimming against the tide. At a time when most of the companies are cutting back on their expenses in the U.S., Intel is investing massively in that country. The company on February 10 announced plans to invest $7 billion over the next two years to expand and transform three U.S. manufacturing plants. With this initiative, Intel aims to outpace rival Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in its core PC business, reported BusinessWeek.

The company plans to begin shipping in volume the world's first microprocessors created at the atomic 32-nanometer level-transistors so small that 4 million of them could fit on the period at the end of this sentence, as early as this fall. Intel plans to begin retooling chipmaking plants in Arizona, New Mexico, and Oregon, where a total of 7,000 people will be employed.

By shifting to a more efficient manufacturing process, Intel hopes to sell chips to consumer electronics, cell phones, and other Internet-connected devices. Such chips could substantially lower development costs for Nokia (NOK), Samsung, Sony (SNE), and other manufacturers struggling to outdo each other with cutting-edge TVs, phones, and other devices.
"We're investing in America to keep Intel and our nation at the forefront of innovation," said Intel CEO Paul S. Otellini. "The chips that the new fabs produce will become the basic building blocks of the digital world, generating economic returns far beyond our industry," he added.

Intel executives had been signaling for weeks that the chipmaker remained on track to spend $5.2 billion, or roughly the same as it spent on capital improvements in 2008, to move to the 32-nanometer manufacturing process.

Indian techie accused in $1-bn Intel data theft

An Indian software engineer working with AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) has been charged with stealing sensitive documents from his former employer Intel, said court reports on Tuesday.

Intel has filed a criminal complaint against Biswamohan Pani, former design engineer for chipmaker Intel, in the US district court in Boston. The case is that Pani made off with information valued by Intel at more than $1 billion. He is due to appear in Boston federal court today.

Intel filed the complaint formally, after the FBI sleuths searched his house in Worcester in July, which recovered some top-secret files with details of future Intel chip designs, said a report.

Pani had resigned from Intel in May but he said the company that he could continue to work at Intel till June 11. But he started working with AMD on June 2 while he still continued with Intel.
During this period he allegedly remote-accessed the secret files with an intention to pass it on to AMD. But FBI has ruled out AMD's involvement in Pani's conduct.

On the other hand, Pani pleaded innocence in the incident and said that the design files were meant to help his wife who still works with Intel and were not intended for sale. Networking major Cisco in its recent report on data leakage had pointed to the 'insider threat' to corporate information.
