JD Design Awards 2026 Celebrates The Future Of Fashion Through Craft And Innovation

The JD Design Awards 2026 – Fashion Edition, held at Sabha, Bengaluru, brought together creativity, craftsmanship, and contemporary design as aspiring designers of JD Institute of Fashion Technology and JD School of Design unveiled collections inspired by traditional craft practices from India and around the world. The showcase celebrated the seamless blend of heritage and innovation, demonstrating how timeless artisan techniques can be reimagined for today's global fashion landscape.

This year's runway featured a diverse range of collections inspired by crafts, including Lambani embroidery, Rogan art, Dokra, Madhubani, Machilipatnam Kalamkari, Nizamabad black pottery, Kolam, Warli, Banaras glass beadwork, Kaudi patchwork, Kandangi weaving, Channapatna craftsmanship, Surpur line art, and basket weaving, alongside global inspirations such as Al Sadu weaving, Moroccan Zellige, Italian corded quilting, Japanese Sashiko and Boro, Zulu beadwork, and Gyotaku. Each designer transformed these traditional art forms into contemporary silhouettes through innovative textile techniques, surface embellishments, sculptural construction, and sustainable material exploration.

The collections reflected months of research, experimentation, and design development, addressing themes of cultural preservation, circular fashion, responsible material usage, craftsmanship, and technological innovation. By combining traditional knowledge with modern design thinking, the young designers presented fashion that is both culturally rooted and globally relevant.

Speaking about this year's showcase, Mr Nealesh Dalal, Managing Trustee of JD Educational Trust, said, "Craft is not something to be preserved behind glass—it is meant to evolve with every generation. At JD, we encourage our students to respect the wisdom of traditional artisans while challenging themselves to reinterpret it through contemporary design. The collections presented today are proof that innovation becomes truly meaningful when it remains connected to culture, craftsmanship, and purpose."
