Komatsu Helps Improve Mining Performance with IIoT Platform Powered by Cloudera

Cloudera, Inc., the modern platform for machine learning and analytics, optimized for the cloud, announced that Komatsu, a leading global heavy equipment manufacturer, has implemented a cloud-based Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) analytics platform powered by Cloudera Enterprise and Microsoft Azure. The platform enables Komatsu teams to help mining customers around the world continuously monitor the performance of some of the largest equipment used in surface and underground mining, increase asset utilization and productivity, and deliver essential resources including energy and industrial minerals for the global economy.

Komatsu’s JoySmart Solutions is an IIoT-based service that helps customers optimize machine performance using machine data and analytics. The JoySmart platform ingests, stores and processes a wide variety of data collected from mining equipment operating around the globe, often at very remote locations in harsh conditions. Types of equipment monitored includes longwall mining systems, electric rope shovels, continuous miners and wheel loaders. Their data includes time-series metrics — machine pressures, temperatures, currents, etc. — alarm and event data, and other information from third party systems. A single machine can have hundreds to multiple thousand data metrics and generate 30,000-50,000 unique time-stamped records per minute.

“With increasing customer demand and more connected machines, we were looking at data growth reaching 30 terabytes per month. Our former environment limited our ability to scale, grow and innovate,” said Anthony Reid, senior manager of analytics at Komatsu. “With Cloudera’s modern platform, we use advanced data analytics and machine learning to power our IIoT success. We now provide customers with better recommendations on machine utilization and deliver services faster. In one example, we were able to make recommendations for a large coal mining company that enabled them to double the daily utilization of their Joy longwall system.”

“By deploying Cloudera Enterprise on Microsoft Azure, our teams make the invisible visible, gaining valuable insights to help customers optimize productivity and mining efficiencies. Cloudera delivered the fast performance, data security and customer support that allowed our teams to access machine data analytics and collaborate with different user groups across the world,” said Reid.

Komatsu data scientists can now build and deploy machine learning models faster to understand equipment operation, provide better insights for customers and ultimately influence future mining equipment design. Utilizing components such as Apache Kudu and Apache Spark, Komatsu can drive real-time processing, machine learning, and analytics on all of their IoT data, including data in motion and data at rest.

“Komatsu required a modern data platform that not only delivers next-generation machine learning and advanced analytics capabilities in the cloud, but is also scalable to increases in their customers’ equipment utilization and productivity,” said Dave Shuman, IoT and manufacturing industry leader at Cloudera. “With Cloudera, Komatsu can now use the vast amounts of data to help its mining customers manage increasing pressure to be environmentally smarter and more productive at a lower operation cost.”

Baby Marine Enters Online Retail Market with 'Daily Fish' in Bengaluru

Seafood company Baby Marine Group (BMG) said on Friday it has posted a turnover of Rs 4 crore since starting home delivery in Kerala and will be launching an outlet in Bangalore in October.

"For five decades we were only serving the export markets. It was only in February we started to tap the domestic market for the first time at Kochi and we have already completed a turnover of Rs 4 crore," Alex K. Thomas, Managing Director of Baby Marine Seafood Retail Pvt Ltd, the group's domestic arm.

The Kochi-headquartered company has also launched home delivery of fish and other sea food in state capital Thiruvananthapuram. The buyers can either place online orders at www.dailyfish.in or by downloading the Daily Fish India app.

In a span of six months, the company already has 10,000 online customers in Kochi alone, Thomas said, noting that the household fish market in Kerala is worth Rs 12,000 crore.
He said the company would open its first outlet outside Kerala in Bengaluru in October and follow it up with more outlets in South India before moving north.

The company has proven its mettle by serving the US and European markets for nearly five decades, but still has to get used to the peculiarities of the domestic market, said Thomas.

"Here, we have to dispel the perception that frozen fish is inferior to fresh fish, which it is not. We use one of the best freezing technologies available in the world. Moreover, we can offer seafood at cheaper rates than what's available in the open market," he said.

At 24 kg a year, Kerala has the highest per capita consumption of fish in India.

Baby Marine offers to home-deliver a kg of cleaned and ready to cook seer fish for Rs 760 and a 250 gram of cleaned shrimp for Rs 190.

Also available are white pomfret, red snapper, pearl spot, mackerel, squids, anchovy, crabs and lobsters.

ROHM Foray into Indian Electric Vehicle market, with Low Power and Energy Efficient Solutions - Power Supply IC

In 2014, an R&D center was established in Bengaluru to technical support Indian customers. Combined with the years of experience from the global markets, and a strong local sales and support organization, we are all set to play a vital role in the Indian Electric Vehicle revolution.” Said Nakamura, Managing Director, ROHM Semiconductor India.

“Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is working towards reducing the accidents due to human errors. Indian Automotive consumers will be benefitted from adopting some, if not all of the ADAS systems, like pedestrian avoidance, obstruction detection, automatic parking, etc. Besides, the number of electric motors in an automotive is steadily increasing, along with the electronics needed for the control. ROHM is working with some of the key enablers of some of these technologies to supply highly efficient semiconductor devices.” Said Britto Edward, Head, Design Center, India.

ROHM announced the availability of new power supply IC based on Nano Pulse Control Technology for the Indian market a 2MHz switching regulator with built-in MOSFET that achieves the highest step-down ratio in the industry. This is required for 48V automotive systems such as mild hybrid vehicles.

The latest switching regulator (BD9V100MUF-C) from ROHM, utilizes proprietary technology to reduce the minimum ON time to an unprecedented 9ns which is 10x shorter than the existing technology, thus enabling step-down operation from high input voltages like 60V to around 2.5V, at a constant frequency of 2MHz. It is very much useful in the new Automotive, Industrial & Solar energy segments. In addition, current-mode control provides easy phase compensation and use fewer external parts, while the integrated high-voltage MOSFET expands the input voltage range to 65V enabling wide adoption.

In recent years, mild hybrid vehicles with 48V systems provide better cost performance over full hybrid cars improving fuel efficiency over conventional 12V power supply systems. The automotive sector is experiencing strict emission norms, combined with the environmental awareness is very much focused on saving every single drop of energy.

The Industry always wanted a switching regulator operating at 2MHz operation for Automotive systems. Besides, there has not been a power supply IC capable of stepping down 48V to the 3.3V or 5V needed for low power devices inside the ECU, and typically such a regulator always used 2-stage step down, which this product will enable in a single stage, improving efficiency to a large extent.

Terminology
Nano Pulse Control:
Nano Pulse Control refers to the ultra-fast switching technology that can achieve very high step down ratio. It is a combination of analog circuit design, layout, besides other processes. It utilizes ROHM’s vertically integrated production system to the maximum.
