The highlight of the event was the Interschool Recycling Championship (ISRC), ITC WOW’s flagship programme designed to instil the habit of source segregation and responsible waste management among future citizens. Implemented across all major cities in southern India, the programme encourages students and schools to actively participate in waste management practices, thereby fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental responsibility.

It is heartening to see that our future generation is actively coming forward to manage and recycle waste and create widespread awareness on the subject.”

The 2024-25 edition of the Championship witnessed an overwhelming response with nearly 75000 students actively participating and collectively contributing approximately 500 metric tons of dry waste for recycling. The Championship also saw 2482 schools from across southern India take part, involving 9.31 lakh students in raising awareness about waste segregation. The programme brought together government and private schools from various boards, including ICSE, CBSE, and SSC, fostering a culture of sustainability among young changemakers.

Beyond recognizing the winners, the event also served as a platform to strengthen the collaboration among various stakeholders, including the waste handler community, schools, and government, in promoting responsible waste management practices and driving the message of a cleaner, healthier India.

ITC’s flagship WOW programme is a collaborative model involving multiple stakeholders that is turning neighbourhoods into clean and healthy environments. Since its inception in 2007, ITC WOW has emerged as one of India’s largest awareness programmes on solid waste management.  The initiative actively promotes source segregation, maximizes resource recovery and supports sustainable livelihoods for waste handlers. To date, ITC WOW has:

·         Engaged 69 lakh households and 67 lakh students across six states in its mission for responsible waste management.

·         Benefitted over 17,844 waste collectors and ragpickers.

·         Recovered 65,000 metric tons of dry recyclable waste annually.

In Karnataka alone, the programme has covered over 21 lakh households across 180 wards, amplifying its impact on responsible waste management.

The initiative underscores ITC’s commitment to encouraging sustainable practices and fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment among the younger generation.  It is aligned with the broader goal of advancing a circular economy. As a global sustainability leader, ITC has achieved the distinction of being the only company in the world to be solid waste recycling positive for 17 consecutive years and has been plastic neutral since FY2022. Adopting a circular approach and reducing its environmental footprint, ITC aims for 100 percent of its packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable/bio-degradable by 2028.

Its Russian Su-57 Felon & U.S.-Made F-35 Stealth Fighter Steal Show At The Aero India 2025

Russian Su-57 Felon next-generation fighter share the tarmac with a U.S.-made F-35 stealth fighter is a truly unusual sight, and it has quickly become a signature image of the Aero India 2025 international airshow. With the Indian Air Force looking for new fighters, and with a complex path toward fielding its own fifth-generation combat aircraft, the rival jets have both been pitched, to some degree or another, toward emerging Indian requirements. However, it’s far from clear whether either of these advanced combat aircraft will be suitable, for varied reasons.

The first-ever such meeting on the ground between Su-57 and F-35A (two of which were sent to the airshow) occurred at Aero India over the weekend. The airshow is taking place at Air Force Station Yelahanka in Bengaluru and is open to the public between Feb. 10-14.

A Russian Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft is pictured after it lands during the inaugural day of the 15th edition of 'Aero India 2025', a military aviation exhibition at the Yelahanka Air Force Station in Bengaluru on February 10, 2025.

The U.S. government has still not technically cleared the F-35 for offer to India, although, as in the case of the United Arab Emirates, where the same was true, this didn’t stop the previous Trump administration from pitching the aircraft to the Gulf country.

It’s notable, too, that in the past Lockheed Martin hinted that India choosing its F-21 (essentially an advanced F-16, rebranded) might pave the way for the country to eventually join the F-35 program, as per official sources.

At the opening of the show, the Indian Ministry of Defense published a statement that made a fairly direct reference to the presence of the rival fighters. “Aero India 2025 will provide a rare side-by-side comparison of Eastern and Western fifth-generation fighter technology, offering defense analysts, military personnel, and aviation enthusiasts valuable insights into their respective capabilities,” the sourcen added.

HAL's Hindustan Jet Trainer-36 Is Now Yashas; This Announcement Made At Aero India 2025 Event

In a significant development for India’s aerospace and defense sectors, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has unveiled the revamped version of their flagship jet training aircraft, formerly known as the Hindustan Jet Trainer HJT-36, now christened as ‘Yashas’. This announcement was made during the Aero India 2025 event, which is currently being held in Bengaluru.

HAL has officially renamed its flagship jet training aircraft, the Hindustan Jet Trainer (HJT-36), as ‘Yashas’ following extensive modifications aimed at improving its flight characteristics. The renaming event, held at Aero India 2025, marks a significant milestone for HAL, showcasing the evolution of the aircraft and its readiness for the next phase of pilot training and operational use.

Upgrades and Modifications to Enhance Performance

The HJT-36 has undergone several upgrades to improve its performance, particularly in departure characteristics and spin resistance. These modifications ensure that the aircraft can handle a wider flight envelope, providing safer and more effective training for future pilots.

The Secretary (Defence Production), Sanjeev Kumar, unveiled the newly renamed ‘Yashas’ in the presence of Dr. D K Sunil, the Chairman & Managing Director of HAL, and senior officials at the event. The upgraded aircraft now features state-of-the-art avionics and an ultra-modern cockpit, designed to boost training effectiveness and operational efficiency.

Indigenous Enhancements and Reduction in Weight

One of the key goals of this upgrade was to reduce the aircraft’s weight while enhancing its overall functionality. To achieve this, obsolete imported components have been replaced with indigenous Line Replaceable Units (LRUs). These locally developed units are crucial for supporting India’s growing defense self-reliance, making the ‘Yashas’ a more cost-effective and sustainable solution for the Indian Air Force.

Training and Operational Capabilities

The ‘Yashas’ is specifically designed for Stage II pilot training, which includes complex maneuvering and counter-insurgency operations. The aircraft is capable of conducting counter-surface force operations, armament training, and aerobatics. With these features, it is an ideal choice for advanced training, allowing pilots to gain crucial skills that will prepare them for more challenging missions.

‘Yashas’ is powered by a FADEC-controlled AL-55I jet engine, providing an optimal thrust-to-weight ratio for better performance. The engine offers improved thrust management, ensuring that the aircraft remains highly reliable in a variety of training conditions.

Enhanced Cockpit and Situational Awareness

The aircraft’s stepped-up rear cockpit and drooped nose provide excellent all-around visibility, which is vital for enhanced situational awareness during training and operational missions. The upgraded cockpit features a glass cockpit with Multi-Function Displays (MFDs) and a Head-Up Display (HUD), providing instructors and trainees with critical flight data and situational information in real-time.

Key Capabilities of ‘Yashas’

Stall and Spin Recovery: The aircraft has been enhanced for stall and spin recovery, an essential feature for training pilots to recover from dangerous flight situations.

Aerobatics: The ‘Yashas’ is designed for advanced aerobatics, offering a versatile platform for pilots to perfect their flying skills.

Armament Carriage: With the ability to carry up to 1,000 kg of armament, the aircraft can also serve operational roles in counter-insurgency and counter-surface operations.

Single-Point Ground Refueling: The aircraft is equipped with a single-point refueling and defueling system, ensuring quicker turnaround times for flight operations.

 Improved Operational Efficiency

The combination of advanced training systems, lightweight structure, and modern avionics makes ‘Yashas’ a highly efficient and effective aircraft for Indian Air Force training schools. The aircraft’s multi-role capabilities, enhanced by modern design and indigenous components, ensure that ‘Yashas’ will play a key role in developing the next generation of Indian Air Force pilots.
