Manipal Institute of Technology Signs MoUs With International Universities; Technical Institutes And Corporates

One of India’s leading academic institution of eminence, Manipal Institute of Technology, has today announced their partnerships with Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) in Malaysia, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) in Japan, and Institute of Defence Scientists and Technologists (IDST) and Elcom Innovation. The MoUs are aimed to encourage skilled based learning as well as create a robust platform for international knowledge exchange. 

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Malaysia Pahang and National Agriculture and Food Research Organization – Japan, will enable students and faculty at MIT to collaborate on research projects, redefine pedagogies and enhance knowledge exchange. On the other hand, the partnership with Institute of Defence Scientists and Technologists and Elcom Innovation will integrate work-based learning into the curriculum. 

Sharing his view on the recent collaborations, Dr. (Cdr). Anil Rana, Director MIT, said, “At MAHE/MIT, our undivided focus has been to create an enriched learning experience for both our students and faculty. Internationalization of education, especially post the COVID-19 pandemic, is a crucial element globally. In fact, it is one of the key themes for MAHE this academic year. Over the last 10 years, we have partnered with 80+ international institutions across practices. This association with NARO and UMP is an extension of our efforts to build strong research capabilities and to develop joint learning programs.” 

“Strengthening India’s defence technology is a key instrument in our Make in India vision. Over the last few years, the demand for engineers in this domain has significantly increased. At MIT, we place a strong emphasis on understanding the market dynamics and curating relevant courses for our students. The alliance with IDST and Elcom is an extension of this commitment and we are optimistic that it will create avenues for skill-based learning for our students”, added Dr. Rana, Director MIT. 

With NARO, a primary institute in Japan focused on R&D in agriculture and food, students of MIT Manipal will be get enhanced opportunities for agricultural research and exchange of bio specimens. This collaboration with NARO would also pave the way for a closer relationship with Japan, a country known for its agricultural, farming, and fishing expertise.

On the other hand, the MoUs with academic institutes such as Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and Institute of Defence Scientists and Technologists (IDST), and with industry player like Elcom Innovation (which specializes in the fields of technology), will not only foster technical knowledge among faculty and students but will also lead to innovative M Tech courses focused on electronics, communications and defence technology.

These partnership marks MIT’s 05th MoU in FY 22-23. Over the course of the last year, the university has made many strategic partnerships with domestic and international universities, industry bodies, international research organizations and many more to accelerate skill based and research oriented enhanced learning for the students.

HCL Foundation Top Winners Focused On Tech-Led Teacher Training, Tuberculosis Care And Water Body Conservation


* Selected NGOs to receive ?16.5 crore (appx. $2 million) to positively impact environment, health and education across rural India 

HCL Foundation announced the NGOs selected for the 2023 edition of its flagship program HCL Grant - which supports pioneering work in sustainable rural development in India.  HCL Foundation delivers the corporate social responsibility agenda of HCLTech.  

Three NGOs—Planatearth, Innovators in Health (IIH) India and Meghshala Trust will receive ?5 crore (appx. $620,000) each for their projects under the HCL Grant endowment. This year’s winners were chosen from submissions from more than 15,000 entities, an increase of 80% versus last year.  

According to Ms. Robin Ann Abrams, Chairperson of the HCL Grant Jury and Board Member, HCLTech: “These organizations and their projects – aligned to the HCL Foundation’s core areas of focus in environment, health and education - will bring a visible and inclusive change to the ‘last mile.’ We believe their work will provide an important lifeline to rural communities by bridging inequality in healthcare, helping in freshwater conservation and more readily bringing education to underserved populations.” 

In addition, six NGO finalists will receive grants of ?25 lakh (appx. $30,000) each in the following categories: 

Environment: Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune (IISER); North-East Initiative Development Agency (NEIDA) 

Education: MAHAN; Sri Sri Rural Development Programme Trust (SSRDPT) 

Health: Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS); Guria Swayam Sevi Sansthan (GSSS) 

HCL Foundation has funded more than ?130 crore (appx. $16 million) to NGOs since the HCL Grant program’s onset eight years ago, reaching over 1.8 million beneficiaries in more than 25,000 villages in remote districts across 19 states and two Union Territories of India.  

Dr. Nidhi Pundhir, Vice President, Global CSR, HCL Foundation, bestowed the recipients with their awards in a virtual ceremony attended by representatives of NGOs, HCL, HCLTech and the media fraternity. The ceremony was the culmination of a thorough, Grant Thornton-audited process, which earlier in the year involved a series of pan-India symposiums bringing together more than 2,000 representatives from NGOs, government and corporates. 

“We are delighted at the volume of applications received for this year’s selection process. HCL Grant partners with these NGOs to strengthen their governance and help scale their innovative ideas for sustainable rural development. We look forward to working with this year’s selected NGO partners to scale innovative interventions that will supercharge progress for rural communities,” Dr. Pundhir said. 

She also announced the release of the seventh volume of the compendium ‘Fifth Estate – NGOs Transforming Rural India in Environment, Health and Education,’ which chronicles the work done by past HCL Grant recipients. The book will be available in all national libraries and through international affiliates. 

Planatearth was awarded HCL Grant in the environment category for its project on conservation of water bodies by cleaning plastics from oceans and invasive species like water hyacinth from ponds and backwaters. It is expected to directly benefit at least 170,000 fishermen across 45 villages in Kerala. The project aims to improve quality of water bodies along with positive impact on the livelihood of fisherfolk. 

“The oceans of the world, and the coastal waters of Kerala in particular, are polluted by plastic, which seriously affects the livelihood of marine fishermen. The HCL Grant is the only way we could realize our goals of helping the rural fishermen of Kerala and conserving the planet,” said Sooraj Abraham, Founder, Planatearth. 

Innovators in Health (IIH) India received the HCL Grant in the health category for a project on universal tuberculosis care in rural Bihar. The project aims to reduce tuberculosis burden through enabling public health system, improving diagnostics and treatment outcomes. It will reach out to more than 10,500 households in 1,260 villages in the Samastipur district of Bihar.  

“I am deeply humbled by HCL Foundation’s trust in us. This grant will help us extend the services we are already providing to a wider audience and community and make Samastipur a unique district in tuberculosis care in India,” said Dr Manish Kumar, CEO, Innovators in Health (IIH) India. 

Meghshala was awarded the HCL Grant in the education category for a project on technology-enabled teacher capacity building, with focus on local languages. It will directly benefit 2,700 primary and secondary teachers of government schools and 63,000 students from Grades 1-8 in 460 villages of Sikkim. The project will help in promoting digital literacy and encouraging the use of local languages among younger generation.  

“We continue to keep languages at the center of all our development work and HCL Grant’s support will help us extend our services to more classrooms across the nation, especially those that teach local languages, where our intervention is most required,” said Jyoti Thyagarajan, Founder and CEO, Meghshala Trust.

Sanofi Reaffirms Commitment To Rare Diseases In Indian Market


* Receives Subject Expert Committee recommendation to bring new therapies of Pompe, ASMD to India

Sanofi Speciality Care today reaffirmed its commitment to rare diseases in India on the occasion of Rare Disease Day, stating that it will continue with its efforts in empowering the lives of patients with rare diseases by offering transformative healthcare options.

Treatment & Diagnosis

• Diagnostic Program “Disha”, a formal national level testing program offering free-of-cost testing of samples of suspected cases. Over 6000 samples have been tested under this program since its inception in 2013. The samples are tested at the genetics laboratory of Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi and MedGenome, Bengaluru.

• Pratigya, Patient Support Program: Offer free of cost home infusion option for patients on treatment, initiated in 2021.

Training

• Three month’s fellowship programmes in Genetics offered at 8 key centres since 2013, in collaboration with the Society for Indian Academy of Medical Genetics. 

Rare Disease Day is the globally-coordinated movement on rare diseases, working towards equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease. Sanofi has been supporting the rare disease day event commemoration in India for 13 years now, ever since the first event was commemorated in 2010 at the Sir Gangaram Hospital, Delhi.

Anil Raina, General Manager, Sanofi Speciality Care (India) said, “Over the past 40 years, Sanofi has launched different therapies for the treatment of many rare diseases, namely Gaucher disease, Fabry disease, Pompe disease, Mucopolysaccharidosis I (MPS I) and Acid Sphingomyelinase deficiency (ASMD). Since its incorporation in India in 2007, we have been working not only towards enhancing awareness of rare diseases, providing free diagnostic support, but also building capacity of the clinicians, and supporting Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in public and private institutions.”

According to Mr Raina, “The company also has a global humanitarian program aimed at providing free life-saving treatment to patients in India diagnosed with Lysosomal Storage Disorders (LSDs). Under our India Charitable Access Program (INCAP), we have been supporting patients for Gaucher disease, Pompe disease, Fabry disease and MPS I disease with life-saving Enzyme Replacement Therapy. Many of the children receiving therapy under this programme are now in their teens and adulthood, and are able to lead near-normal lives.”More than 1000 patients in over 70 countries are in the company’s global Humanitarian Program today, out of which over 170 patients are from India.

With the largest portfolio of rare disease therapies, the company has also received a recommendation from the Subject Expert Committee to import and market two new products in India -- Nexviazyme® (Avalglucosidase alfa powder) and Xenpozyme™ (Olipudase alfa powder) for Pompe disease and Niemann-Pick disease (ASMD) respectively. “We are hoping to launch these therapies in India by end of 2023 or beginning of next year, subject to completion of all further regulatory steps.”

Both these products have been granted orphan drug status and approval in several countries including the US, Australia, EU, UK and Japan, to name a few.

According to Dr Shalini Menon, Country Medical Lead Sanofi, “Xenpozyme is the first therapy indicated specifically for the treatment of ASMD, and is currently the only approved treatment for this disease. This is a devastating and extremely rare disease that affects both children and adults. The approval of Xenpozyme represents the culmination of bold work done in research and development, and Sanofi’s unwavering commitment to this historically overlooked community.” She said Nexviazyme is for both infantile and late-onset Pompe disease, and showed improvements in respiratory function and walking distance measures.”
