Four Effective Ways To Manage Low Blood Glucose Levels Globally

Diabetes contributes greatly to the health burden of India. As per the recent study undertaken by Indian Council of Medical Research, India is home to the world’s second-largest adult diabetes population and every sixth person with diabetes in the world is an Indian. The past three decades witnessed a 150% increase in the number of people with diabetes in the country.

While the issue of diabetes is widely talked about, the problem of hypoglycemia, appears to be a neglected entity. It is a condition in which blood glucose level fall lower than the standard range. Low blood glucose may also be referred to as an insulin reaction, or insulin shock.

While each person's reaction to low blood glucose is different, the common indicators of low blood glucose include being nervous or anxious, sweating, chills and clamminess, irritability or impatience, fast heartbeat, feeling lightheaded or dizzy, among others. In severe cases, patients can feel disoriented, numb, drowsy and have blurry vision, or difficulty in speaking.

Dr. Suhas Erande, Consultant Diabetologist, Pune, adds, “Hypoglycemia is a condition in which your blood sugar (glucose) level is lower than the standard range. Every individual has different symptoms when his or her glucose levels go down. Therefore, it is important that you monitor your glucose continuously, to know whether you are experiencing low blood glucose trends. Today there are prick free painless continuous glucose monitoring devices that present real-time information on glucose trends, visualizing the 24-hour roadmap of the individual’s glycemic variations.”

Some people with diabetes may not show symptoms, but many others do not even notice them, which is when managing low blood glucose levels becomes challenging. It can lead to severe episodes and medical emergencies. Here are some tips to manage hypoglycaemia effectively:

The 15-15 rule: This rule includes consuming 15 grams of carbohydrate to raise blood glucose levels and check it after 15 minutes. One can have fruits, sugary foods, or drinks such as regular soda, honey lemon water to bring glucose levels to the normal range. If your blood sugar levels are not improving, seek emergency medical help immediately.

Do not skip meals: The most common situation where hypoglycemia is developed is when a meal is missed. Therefore, it’s important to consume meals at the right time that would prevent episodes of hypoglycemia. Additionally, according to a study undertaken in India, women were at a higher risk of developing hypoglycemia, owing to different meal timings due to busy schedules, therefore, it is important to educate patients as well as family members regarding timely meals in diabetic elderly women, which would help in preventing hypoglycemia.

Continuous glucose monitoring: Disciplined diabetes management includes regular glucose monitoring, which has become easier with technology. There are sensor-based CGM devices that show the directional trend of the glucose levels, thus alarming the patient in case of low blood glucose levels. Monitoring blood glucose levels also aids in managing diets, workout regimes, and rebuilding lifestyle around diabetes for effective management.

Do not forget your Diabetologist: Regular consultation for hypoglycemia is non-negotiable. Keep your doctor updated, even if your blood sugar levels are going back to normal. People with diabetes can experience changes that may compel diabetologists to reconsider the standard blood sugar level. Treatment varies from patient to patient and may also vary with the intensity of the condition.

Diabetes is a chronic disease and requires lifelong care and with technology advancements today, monitoring glucose levels has become simple and accessible. All one needs to do is keep the doctor in loop. With few simple steps, one can truly live fully with diabetes.

The Akshaya Patra Foundation has collaborated with FedEx Express, the world's largest express transportation company, to further its ‘Go Green Initiatives.’ FedEx Express has donated solar panels to Akshaya Patra’s kitchen in Panvel, Maharashtra, and electric bikes (e-bikes), at Bellary, Karnataka. Their support will help the Foundation generate 25 kW power, adopt an environment friendly mode of transportation and reduce its carbon footprint. The savings in transportation costs as a result of the adoption of the e-bikes as a replacement for fuel-powered vehicles will enable Akshaya Patra to provide meals to more than 2,800 children for an entire academic year.

Since 2000, Akshaya Patra has been serving hot, nutritious mid-day meals to children every school day. The Foundation is conscious of its responsibility towards the children and communities it serves, and its responsibility towards the planet. The organization has strived to reduce its carbon footprint by adopting various green initiatives, including the use of biogas plants to convert organic waste into energy which generates 120-150 cubic metres of biogas. These plants reduce the dependency on LPG while also producing organic manure, which is a more sustainable alternative to chemical fertilizers. The Foundation also has Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) to treat, dispose, and recycle kitchen waste and prevent environmental pollution.

Akshaya Patra kitchens has also installed solar panels that use photovoltaic (PV) cells to convert sunlight into electricity. The organisation has also added e-bikes to ensure sustainable practices to and from its kitchens to further reduce its carbon footprint. The solar panels in Panvel and e-bikes in Bellary donated by FedEx Express, will accelerate Akshaya Patra’s efforts to adopt green energy across its operations.

Suvendu Choudhury, Managing Director, International Operations for FedEx Express said, “At FedEx we are committed to connect the world responsibly and resourcefully, and we’re delighted to collaborate with Akshaya Patra to make a sustainable change in the way they work. As part of our FedEx Cares program, we’re working with communities across the globe to help them move people and goods more sustainably. The ` and solar panel contribution to Akshaya Patra will positively impact the environment, resulting in more meals for school children.”

Anant Arora, Chief Sustainability and Communication Officer, The Akshaya Patra Foundation lauded the partnership and said, “While we work towards our endeavour to erase childhood hunger and malnutrition at the grassroots level, we are also striving to fulfil another goal – to give back to the environment. FedEx Express efforts to encourage and support the Go-Green initiative by donating e-bikes to the School-Relationship officers and Solar Power Plant at Panvel are deeply appreciated. I am confident that this partnership will help us adopt more sustainable practices into our daily operations and ensure our carbon footprint gets smaller with time. We are deeply grateful for FedEx’s philanthropy as it will take us one step closer to our green goals. I also want to thank the Central Government and the Government of Karnataka for providing us this opportunity to serve children and communities during the pandemic, and supporting and encouraging our efforts all along.”

Wipro GE Healthcare Launches Its First ‘Made In India – AI Enabled Cath Lab’ To Address Cardiovascular Disease Burden In India

* The Intelligent AI - AutoRight technology powered by Edison, enables precision healthcare delivery

* To enable minimally invasive procedures with the objective of risk minimization

GE Healthcare, a leading global medical technology, diagnostics and digital solutions innovator today announced the launch of its first ‘Made in India’, ‘AI-powered’ Cath lab - Optima IGS 320 to advance cardiac care in India. Built at Wipro GE Healthcare’s new factory launched under the PLI (production linked incentive) scheme in Bengaluru, the Cath lab leverages the GE proprietary AutoRight technology.[1] Powered by Edison, AutoRight, is the first neural network-based interventional image chain.[2] AutoRight features Artificial Intelligence that automatically optimizes image and dose parameters in real time, enabling clinicians to focus their attention and expertise on patients.

In India, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) still contribute to 60% of all deaths, of which, 82% occur due to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), chronic respiratory diseases, cancer, and diabetes.[3] It is also noted that the younger generation, below 40 years of age, is increasingly affected by CVDs. While interventional cardiology is a promising solution, there are gaps in terms of access to reliable and intelligent technologies that can support precise and rapid decision-making given the critical nature of the procedures. There is also a growing shift in preference among patients for minimally invasive procedures, that limit the size and number of incisions. This new generation of interventional imaging software in Optima IGS 320 enables clinical versatility to guide sophisticated non-invasive procedures with greater precision. Automating the typically complex process with AutoRight helps reduce the burden on interventionalists and may increase their attention on the procedure.

Dr. Shravan Subramanyam, Managing Director, Wipro GE Healthcare said, “At Wipro GE Healthcare our mission is to move from health care to healthy ageing and that can be accomplished with predictive, preventative, personalized medicine. The rising complexity of patient profiles and shifting disease patterns is making the need of personalized care even more vital and Artificial Intelligence solutions have the potential to transform the patient care pathway. With our ‘Made in India’ AI-enabled Cath lab, we aim to drive intelligent imaging to support cardiologists and patients with customized treatment protocols and therapies and enable access to quality healthcare across all of India.”

Srikanth Suryanarayanan, Head – Imaging, GE Healthcare South Asia said, “With Optima IGS320, we bring to market an imaging innovation that reflects the future of healthcare. This ‘industry-first’ Cath lab has a new generation of interventional imaging software that enables clinical versatility to guide sophisticated, non-invasive procedures with greater precision and reduced risk. Our aim is to reduce the burden on interventionalists, increasing their attention on procedures, so that they can utilize every second to bring their clinical expertise to treating patients.”

Padma Shri Dr. CN Manjunath, Professor of Cardiology & Director, Jayadeva Institute of Cardiac Sciences & Research, Bangalore said, "Coronary disease is highly prevalent, affecting roughly 8% of the population. Addressing this, cost effective and quality cardiac care is critical. However, it is only possible when the healthcare industry manufactures innovative medical equipment. Cardiac cath labs form the heart of a hospital and are evolving in line with disease prevalence. For instance, 50 to 60% of cardiac procedures which were previously treated by surgery can today be treated by non-surgical methods in the Cath lab. With its Cath lab, Wipro GE Healthcare is helping less invasive heart care solutions reach the last mile."

Designed for cardiac and electrophysiology procedures, Optima IGS320 advances visualization across imaging to support intelligent and precision healthcare delivery. It enables flexibility during operations by enabling friendly gantry movement. Moreover, with intuitive and advanced features like the PCI ASSIST, the Cath lab also enhances image quality that may guide stent placement with increased accuracy. This may reduce complications and empower physicians to conduct complex procedures with confidence.

Earlier this year, Wipro GE Healthcare launched its next-generation Revolution Aspire CT (Computed Tomography) scanner – the first product that was designed and manufactured end-to-end in India, at the newly launched Wipro GE Healthcare Medical Devices Manufacturing plant. Optima IGS320 is the second product being launched at the new factory. Wipro GE Healthcare continues to deepen its commitment to cardiac care in India and advance patient centricity with precision health.
