The Land Rover Defender has been named Supreme Winner Women’s World Car of the Year 2021. The triumph is the first time a Land Rover has won the top prize at the awards and is the latest in a series of international honours for the most capable Land Rover ever made.

Defender remains true to the pioneering spirit that has been a Land Rover hallmark for over 70 years and redefines adventure for the 21st century. Iconic in name, shape and capability, it is available in a choice of body designs and can be personalised with a choice of four Accessory Packs to help owners make more of their world.

The Women’s World Car of the Year (WWCOTY) awards are the only car awards in the world with a jury comprised exclusively of woman, with 50 motoring journalists from 38 countries on five continents recognising the best new models available. New Defender was named Best Medium SUV 2021 at the awards before being awarded – to coincide with International Women’s Day – the headline WWCOTY prize.

Nick Collins, Executive Director, Vehicle Programmes, Jaguar Land Rover said: “This is a huge honour for the whole team and a reward for the hard work that has gone into creating such a capable vehicle. Defender has won more than 50 international awards already, which tells us that our original vision for a 21st century Defender was the right one. New Defender combines an unmistakable silhouette with state-of-the-art technology in a design that respects its heritage and delivers authentic Land Rover capability. The result is a family of 4x4s that lives up to the Defender name with durable commercial derivatives, an efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain and our potent new Defender V8.”

Marta GarcĂa, Executive President Women’s World Car of the Year said, “The legend has been updated. The Land Rover Defender is no longer just a SUV to cross the Amazon or go into the desert. Its latest reinvention invites you to travel by road in the same comfort as a luxury saloon. For this reason, and for its technology and comfort it has been chosen as the Best Car of the Year by the Women's World Car of the Year.”

The stripped-back personality of the original Defender has been embraced inside, with the emphasis on simplicity and practicality. Defender 110 offers five, six or 5+2 seating configurations, while the 90 is capable of accommodating six occupants in a vehicle the length of a compact family hatchback.

Defender’s breadth of capability raises the threshold for off-road ruggedness and on-road comfort. Underpinned by Land Rover’s strong D7x aluminium platform – the brand’s stiffest ever body structure – advanced all-terrain technologies and state-of-the-art powertrains deliver unstoppable capability. Its carefully honed handling delivers a rewarding drive and first-class long-haul comfort across all terrains, and the experts at Euro NCAP have given Defender a maximum five-star safety rating.

A choice of advanced Ingenium petrol and cleaner diesel engines ensure Defender has the power, control and efficiency for any environment, while a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) powertrain provides silent EV-only progress of up to 43 kms (27 miles)*. In addition, a powerful supercharged petrol V8 new levels of performance and driver engagement to the Defender family.

State-of-the art technology ensures Defender delivers 21st century connectivity. Its next-generation Electrical Vehicle Architecture (EVA2) works in conjunction with Software Over the Air (SOTA) to ensure Defender is always connected and always up to date. Intuitive Pivi Pro infotainment features a simple menu structure and allows the most commonly used functions to be accessed directly from the home screen, while the easily customised layouts require 50 per cent fewer inputs than before.

The Defender family now encompasses the Defender 90 and Defender 110, as well as the 90 and 110 Hard Top commercial variants, while the new 386 kW (525PS) Defender V8 combines characteristic Land Rover capability with incredible performance and bespoke chassis settings for heightened driver engagement.

Since its launch, Defender has won more than 50 global accolades, including Top Gear’s 2020 Car of the Year, Motortrend’s 2021 SUV of the year and Autocar’s Best SUV 2020.

India’s NCD Screening Programme Attracts South East Asian Countries; Facilitated By Tata Trusts And Dell

* 80 million enrolled as of now in 29 States & UTs, 30 million screened

India’s Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) screening programme, facilitated by Tata Trusts and Dell, has attracted the attention of several South Asian countries.

Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Myanmar have already evinced interest in replicating the programme. This followed the World Health Organisation (WHO) presenting the programme to the 11 member-countries of its South-east Asian Region (SEORA) for population-based screening and its large-scale usability by field-level health workers.

Introduced in 2017, the NCD screening programme, launched by the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), has, thus far, enrolled 80 million people across 29 states and Union Territories, and already screened about 30 million for common NCDs, like diabetes, hypertension and certain types of cancer. About six million have been referred for medical consultations, of whom at least 1.5 million have thus far been treated. The programme, which is one of the modules in Ayushman Bharat’s Comprehensive Primary Healthcare (CPHC) Initiative, is currently being deployed in 503 districts across the country and will be able to track health trends across the country.

The programme has developed a cloud-based mobile, web and analytics solution – an application -- bringing quality health services at people’s doorsteps, enabling increased productivity for health workers and doctors, and facilitating monitoring of delivery of services by state and district administrators. The technology solution is hosted on a government data centre and managed by MoHFW’s Centre for Health Informatics.

The technology solution has been developed by Dell. Tata Trusts supports implementation of the programme in the States through training, and programme management activities to ensure technology adoption amongst health staff and steady progress through continuous monitoring.  Besides the WHO itself, reputed institutions, like NHSRC (National Health Systems Resource Centre), AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research), NICPR (National Institute of Cancer Prevention Research), NIC (National Informatics Centre) and the IndiaStack team at iSPIRT (India Software Product Industry Round Table) have collaborated with the programme.

This advanced solution will also be linked with MoHFW’s other programmes to provide a strong foundation for inclusive health care service under Ayushman Bharat.

Technology Is An Opportunity And Not A Barrier For Indian Women

By Nithya Krishnan, Director, Marketing – India & SAARC, Trend Micro

The aspirational woman of the 21st century has a steep learning and career curve ahead of them. There are varied new areas and fields for them to explore, whether it's across science and technology, banking and finance, management, arts, literature etc. Also, it's a great opportunity for women across rural India to have access to information and knowledge in this digital era.

Women have occupied leadership positions in the past as well. However, much focus and attention weren’t given. In the present times, media and society is much more vocal about such aspects. Yes, certain fields which use to see fewer women occupying senior positions now have more representation, whether be it in - IT, BFSI, real estate etc.

Technology is an opportunity and not a barrier for women, as they are working across the tech spectrum, be it - data scientist, software, hardware engineer, programmer, coder or CXO-level management roles. Some of the best tech R&D centers in India employ women within their ranks.

I believe our company has always been a great place to work for employees, irrespective of gender. We provide an equal opportunity for all, where employees get ample scope to grow both professionally as well as personally. Also, we happen to be one of the rare global tech companies to be helmed by a woman CEO. As an organization, the company also supports women to pursue careers in tech, and we have partnered with Girls in Tech, a non-profit engagement that empowers girls and women who are passionate about technology.

A better work-life balance is something even men seek, without having to forego promotions. Why should that be any different for women? Hence, whether one chooses one over the other, is entirely an individual's choice. And promotion should largely be dependent on what productivity and results one is able to deliver, irrespective of the gender. At one level, functional domain knowledge in the area of their expertise is an important skill that women of today need to look at and acquire, at another level, strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary to thrive.

My advice to women would be to set high goals and benchmarks for themselves and try achieving them, even if they might fail many times. Also, try to find strong mentors early on in your careers, they might help guide you along the way.
