Emerald Jewellery Unveils AI Enabled Mobile Application Platform for Jewellery B2B Business in Collaboration with IBM

IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Emerald Jewel Industry India Limited (Emerald Jewellery), one of  India's largest jewellery manufacturers, today unveiled the "Tej" mobile app, a first-of-its-kind Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled mobile application platform powering the B2B business of Emerald Jewellery in India. The app connects Emerald Jewellery with its ~200 dealers, enabling them to search through a growing catalogue of over 500,000 jewellery designs quickly and navigate the complex ordering process easily.

As a part of the multi-year engagement, Emerald Jewellery selected IBM iX, the business design arm of IBM Services, to design, build and deploy Tej, which runs on iOS and Android operating systems. Utilizing the IBM Garage Methodology and IBM Research Labs India, a team of IBM technology and mobile design experts developed the Visual Browse and Visual Search APIs which is hosted on IBM Public Cloud and secured with the IBM Security MaaS360 with Watson Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) platform.

The collaboration with IBM has enabled Emerald Jewellery to redesign the buying process for their dealers, from jewellery design selection to placing a purchase order, using a zero-touch engagement model. Tej App integrates with Visual Browse and Visual Search from IBM Research labs developed for enhanced cognitive search capabilities. IBM India Research Labs developed the vision APIs to help Emerald Jewellery dealers search for specific design elements more easily.

“Our business model is B2B sales where we sell to wholesalers, dealers and large retail chains. With an in-house design team of 170 manual and computer-aided designers based out of Bombay, Delhi, Kolkata and Coimbatore, we have built a design bank of more than 500,000 designs. We introduce more than 2000 new designs across categories every month. This is one of our greatest strengths and there is a need to showcase this to our customers and expand the design range for jewellery retail in India," said Mr. K Srinivasan, Managing Director, Emerald Jewel Industry India Limited.

He added, "Tej will help us showcase our designs seamlessly and allow our customers across the country to order the latest trends in jewellery design, at the click of a button. I am also happy to share that the Tej mobile app enabled us to reach out to our dealers in spite of the restrictions laid down by the COVID-19 lockdown."

Emerald Jewellery aspires to be the world's largest jewellery manufacturer. The company plans to bring on-board hundreds of new dealers, in the next one year, as they now have the capacity to scale resource requirements on-demand using IBM Cloud. Also, using Tej means that any authorized dealer can start doing business with Emerald Jewellery, using a smart tablet. This BYOD (bring your own device) model takes advantage of IBM Security MaaS360 UEM software to securely deploy the Tej mobile app on any device, whether it be a smartphone or a tablet. Before using UEM, dealers had to be issued with a pre-loaded tablet and updates to inventory and designs would take time.

Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India/South Asia, said, "We are proud to partner with Emerald Jewel Industry India Limited, one of India's largest jewellery manufacturers. As their strategic transformation partner, we were able to deliver to a challenging and complex requirement of a B2B ordering system. Each order having multiple configurations of jewellery designs in various caratage, size and weight, was a complex CPQ (Configure Price and Quote) system that was built for Emerald Jewellery on a hybrid mobile app architecture hosted on IBM Cloud.”

"We also ensured that the customer ordering process is directly integrated into their ERP system by developing consumable API's on their ERP platform and integrating it with the 'Tej' app. 'Tej' mobile app is a truly “born-on-the-cloud” solution, developed and hosted on IBM Cloud," reiterated Sandip Patel, Managing Director, IBM India/South Asia.

The initial success of Tej has been encouraging. The IBM iX team collaborated virtually with the Emerald Jewellery team using the IBM Garage Methodology to upgrade and fast-track the deployment of the Tej mobile app in April 2020 during the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Also, thanks to a support system operated by IBM and Emerald Jewellery team, customer and sales teams benefit from quicker response times to queries and other requests for assistance.

Indian Organizations with Culture of Innovation Fuelling Business Resilience and Economic Recovery: Microsoft-IDC Study

*  77% of Indian organizations have found innovation to be critical or important to their performance and resilience

* 78% of organizations in India are accelerating the pace of digitalization in response to the crisis

* 64% of respondents say innovation in products and services has become easier in the post-COVID-19 era, as compared to 32.5% prior to the pandemic

* Paisabazaar.com reimagines the loan application and disbursal process during the pandemic with Paisabazaar Stack, leveraging Microsoft Azure and Azure AI

As organizations across the world and India continue to deal with disruptions resulting from the pandemic, 77% of businesses in India consider that innovation is now a ‘must’ for them to respond quickly to market challenges and opportunities, and ensure business resilience, said a recent Microsoft and IDC report. Released today, the India findings of the study ‘Culture of Innovation: Foundation for business resilience and economic recovery in Asia Pacific’ highlighted that a large majority of business decision makers agree that innovation is a necessity to staying resilient in a crisis. The findings were released by Rajiv Sodhi, Chief Operating Officer, Microsoft India and Vasant Rao, Managing Director – India and South Asia, IDC, in the presence of Mukesh Sharma, Chief Technology Officer, Paisabazaar.com and Gaurav Aggarwal, Director and Head of Unsecured Loans, Paisabazaar.com.

The study found that in a short span of six months, organizations in India have increased their ability to innovate by 4% by maturing their Culture of Innovation. The study also showed that close to 78% of India organizations are speeding up digitalization in a variety of ways to adapt to the new reality. This included launching digital products and introducing digital payments to embracing ecommerce and automation. As a result, Indian companies are aiming at increasing their revenue from digital products and services to 50% in the next 3 years from 36% at present. According to the survey, 64% of respondents acknowledged that innovation has become easier in the post-COVID-19 era. Prior to the pandemic, only 32.5% of Indian business found innovation in their products and services easy.

The study introduced the culture of innovation framework, which spans the dimensions of people, process, data, and technology, to assess organizations’ approach to innovation. It surveyed 439 business decision makers and 438 workers in India within a 6-month period, before and since COVID-19. The India study was part of a broader survey among 3,312 business decision makers and 3,495 workers across 15 markets in Asia Pacific region.  Through the research, organizations’ maturity was mapped and as a result, organizations were grouped in four stages – traditionalist (stage 1), novice (stage 2), adaptor (stage 3) and leaders (stage 4). Leaders comprise of organizations that are the most mature in building a culture of innovation[1].

“Innovation is no longer an option, but a necessity. We have seen how the recent crisis has spurred the need for transformation; for organizations to adapt and innovate in order to emerge stronger,” said Rajiv Sodhi, COO, Microsoft India. “We commissioned this research to gain better understanding of the relationship between having a culture of innovation and an organization’s growth. But now, more than achieving growth, we see that having a mature culture of innovation translates to resilience, and strength to withstand economic crises to recover,” he added.

“We see amongst leaders a constant appetite for growth and evolution. During COVID-19, 31% of firms in India said they think their business model will lose competitiveness in five years’ time. This desire and urgency for continuous improvement through agility and adaptation to change will determine the success of businesses in this new normal,” said Vasant Rao, Managing Director – India and South Asia, IDC.

Focus on technology and skilling

When asked about their priorities for the next 12 months ahead, organizations in India (45%) indicated that they will focus on Technology as most essential for business resilience and recovery. According to the report, some best practices will include developing a culture that promotes investing in disruptive technologies and leveraging data to differentiate and enhance products and services.

The other area of focus is People.  In the coming year, 18.5% businesses in India plan to focus on embracing risks and driving innovation through ongoing learning, and the right talent and skills. Supported by technological transformation, organization also need to focus on encouraging new and breakthrough ideas among its employees as well as hiring a diverse workforce.

“Organizations in India understand that they need to improve across all dimensions of culture of innovation, especially technology. It is encouraging to see business leaders recognize this, and plan to focus on technology to drive sustained innovation and realize their digital transformation ambition. Achieving success in digital transformation requires both the adoption of tools and technologies as well as enhancing own people’s capabilities – what we term as tech intensity – a critical component of the culture of innovation. Our goal is to realize an inclusive future where all organizations in India are dynamic and resilient – to recover well and thrive despite the crisis. At Microsoft, we are committed to working with organizations in India to make this happen, together,” said Sodhi.

Showcasing a new technology feature that deploys Microsoft Azure and Azure AI to enable extensive digital solutions for loans & credit cards, Mukesh Sharma, Chief Technology Officer, Paisabazaar.com, said, “Most large lenders and Fintechs were unprepared due to the lack of digital processes and infrastructure. We all had to wake up to a new reality and adapt to it. We recognised the potential of AI and Cognitive Services to make end-to-end digital loan disbursals a reality with our Digital Stack.  As the market leader with partnerships with most large banks and new-age lenders - and a culture of innovation since inception - we are well placed to accelerate this critical shift towards the much-needed digitization of the entire ecosystem.”

Crypto Staking Services Provider, Stakefish Simplifies Staking with the Launch of Eth2 Staking Platform

The leading global validator for Proof of Stake blockchains, stakefish today announced the launch of their non custodial staking platform, Eth2, to enable anyone to stake ETH while maintaining full control.

The Ethereum staking platform, Eth2,  provides the crypto community with an attractive option to stake without needing to personally run validators. stakefish also announced an “early-bird” offer of a one-time flat fee of 0.1 ETH for each validator until withdrawals are enabled. This is a limited period offer for the initial adopters of the Ethereum staking platform, Eth2 and is subject to change over the coming months. Anyone who stakes with stakefish during this “early-bird” fee period will lock in this price and will not be required to pay any additional fees until withdrawals are enabled.

Eth2 is being rolled out in Phases. Phase 0 starts off with staking during which the stakers do not have an option to withdraw or transfer. The number one priority of Ethereum 2.0 developers is the stability of the network. Withdrawals are not planned until at least Phase 1.5.

Once the stakers sign up, the platform generates the validator signing keys and spins up the requested validators. stakefish’s infrastructure team has a strong industry record of running validators on other blockchain protocols without any slashing incidents. The team applies the same rigorous security approach to the validators deployed for Ethereum 2.0.

Mr. Chun Wang, CEO, stakefish said, “Ethereum, with a market value of $25.3 billion and a daily trading volume standing at about $5.9billion, is the second-most valuable cryptocurrency by market capitalization and staking can play a major role in augmenting adoption. The Eth2 staking platform makes Ethereum staking easy and accessible to everyone. Staking reward rates will vary from 2% to 20% depending on how much ETH is staked overall. This is a step towards creating more awareness and enabling mass adoption of crypto globally and we are excited to see how our users respond to the same.”

By staking Ethereum 2.0 with stakefish, you can enjoy a one-time flat fee of 0.1 ETH for each validator until withdrawals are enabled.

Hiring Recovers by 18% to Climb 30% Year-On-Year in September: LinkedIn

LinkedIn, the world’s largest online professional network, today announced findings for the September edition of the ‘Labour Market Update’, a monthly update on hiring trends and insights based on LinkedIn's Economic Graph, a digital representation of the Indian economy built by conducting a close analysis of actions of 71+ million members in India. Findings from the latest edition show that hiring continues to improve, competition for jobs is easing, and the digital divide is narrowing, suggesting a recovery in hiring for the non-tech sectors.

Hiring recovery in India reaches 30% year-on-year in September

Earlier in the year, hiring declines reached a low of below -50% year-on-year in April, before starting to slowly recover. In late July, it crossed the 0% mark and continued increasing, reaching 12% in August and 30% year-on-year at the end of September. Hiring in September witnessed an 18 percentage points climb as compared to August 2020.

As businesses and companies continue reopening, we expect recovery to continue as well.

Competition for jobs is lower compared to several months ago, but still 30% higher compared to a year ago

Competition for jobs remains the same as August 2020, at 30% higher as compared to last year. However, after nearly doubling in the middle of 2020, the applications per job dropped down 1.3x in August and stayed at a similar level in September.

Job seekers continue seeking opportunities in other industries, but under less pressure compared to June 2020

Compared to pre-COVID, we still see that job seekers who are currently in the badly affected sectors (such as Recreation & Travel) are 4.2 times more likely to look for jobs in a different sector, compared to pre-COVID. But this stress has abated from June 2020, where the likelihood was as high as 6.8 times. Similarly, the stress for the Retail sector has reduced from 2.4 times to 1.1 times. There is not much change in the other sectors.

Digital divide narrows by 18 percentage points from April to September 2020

Earlier this year during the height of COVID-19 lockdowns, those without digital skills were more affected by the hiring dips compared to those with disruptive digital skills (such as AI and Robotics). Recovery was also faster for disruptive digital talent, but in recent months, this gap has started to narrow from over 20 percentage points difference in April and May, to 2 percentage points difference in September. This possibly reflects the recovery of non-tech sectors.
