250 Million More Woman Became Mobile Owners in Low and Middle-Income Countries Since 2014: GSMA Study

A new GSMA study reveals that 80 per cent of women in low- and middle-income countries are now mobile owners. According to the GSMA’s 2019 Mobile Gender Gap Report released today, mobile is the primary means of internet access in these markets, where 48 per cent of women use mobile to get online.

However, despite the growth in connectivity, the gender gap in mobile ownership is not closing. Women remain 10 per cent less likely than men to own a mobile phone in low- and middle-income countries, and 23 per cent less likely than men to use mobile internet. The mobile gender gap varies by region and country but is widest in South Asia where women are 28 per cent less likely than men to own a mobile device and 58 per cent less likely to use the mobile internet.

“We are seeing significantly increased mobile access for women, however in an increasingly connected world, women are still being left behind,” said Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA. “While mobile connectivity is spreading quickly, it is not spreading equally. Unequal access to mobile technology threatens to exacerbate the inequalities women already experience.”

Taking Action to Address the Mobile Gender Gap

Mobile operators are taking action to address the mobile gender gap and leading an effort to drive digital and financial inclusion for women. As part of the GSMA Connected Women Programme’s Commitment Initiative, nearly 37 mobile operators from 27 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America have committed to reducing the gender gap in their mobile money or mobile internet customer base by 2020. These operators have provided over 16 million additional women with access to digital and financial services since 2016.

“Ensuring digital and financial inclusion for women is critically important, as we know that when women thrive, societies, businesses and economies thrive,” added Granryd. “Reaching the 432 million women in these countries who are still unconnected will require concerted effort and coordination from the mobile industry, as well as policy makers and the international community.”

Women highlighted affordability, literacy and digital skills, a perceived lack of relevance, and safety and security concerns as the top barriers needing to be addressed in order to further decrease the mobile gender gap.

Opportunity for Significant Economic and Commercial Growth

The GSMA found that closing the gender gaps in mobile ownership and usage represents a substantial commercial opportunity for the mobile industry. Over the next five years, low- and middle-income countries could gain an estimated additional $140 billion in mobile industry revenue if operators could close these gender gaps by 2023. The GSMA also found that closing the mobile gender gap could be an important driver of economic growth. These markets could also add an additional $700 billion in GDP growth by 2023.

Voyants Solutions Industrializes BIM Workflows to Design Iconic Station for Indian Railways

Voyants Solutions Private Limited was selected to design an iconic new Gwalior Railway Station that would complement the existing station and attract tourism. The firm used BIM models and workflows to optimize building design and incorporate existing structures. Voyants Solutions designed a structure and development plan that specifically accommodated the challenging requirement of keeping the existing station fully operational during construction.

Like the city of Gwalior, the railway station will be a combination of new and old. The station sits between the old city of Gwalior to the west and the new settlement to the east. The proposed design embraces the old heritage station, which remains a focal point, and adds a light-weight shell structure based on the arch of the existing building. These new modular three-dimensional arches will bring light and new life to the complex. The project designers faced unique constraints to their design since the station will remain fully operational with all platforms open during construction. Voyants Solutions determined that it could meet these specifications with a framed structure, where multiple components could be fabricated off-site and placed in position with the help of cranes. The construction team would cast the pile foundations in-situ, using auger boring and self-compacting concrete.

Voyants Solutions constructed a complete BIM model using Bentley software. They designed the structure in MicroStation and STAAD.Pro, then created a digital engineering model in OpenBuildings Designer. The design required parametric modeling, 3D modeling, and animation. Given the parametrically controlled model, a base component was generated and informed based on site constraints. The complete BIM model made it easy to understand design requirements and optimize project results. Sustainability was a key feature of the design. The team used building energy modeling technology to optimize natural light and minimize the heat gain of the building. By incorporating large overhangs, shading features, and natural ventilation, the firm reduced the heat gain of the building by 40 percent.

A team of five designers at Voyants Solutions prepared the plan set and 3D model for this project in one month. Voyants Solutions estimated labor-hour savings of 30 percent for this proposal and a 500 percent ROI for the project. Bentley software helped the organization industrialize its BIM workflows to quickly deliver a high-quality design with a cohesive scheme.

Upendar Rao Kollu, managing director at Voyants Solutions, said, “Innovative designs need innovative applications. Bentley applications have allowed the multidiscipline team to work on a single platform and create iconic designs.” The Voyants Solutions team succeeded in creating a visually stunning and functional design for the Gwalior Railway Station that will improve passenger-related amenities, serve as a community hub, and contribute to the economic development of the local community.

NPCI is Driving Digital Payments to Deliver a Simple, Secure and Seamless Experience

National Payments Corporation of India is at the forefront of driving digital payments to deliver a simple, secure and seamless experience for consumers. With the widespread acceptance and growth of Digital payments it is paramount that consumers also learn safety aspects of any new ecosystem. NPCI started the process of consumer safety within the apps with various security controls.

RBI has recently issued Advisory (Alert 1/2019) dated 14th Feb’19 pertaining to new modus operandi to commit fraud in Digital Payment Ecosystem using Remote screen access apps. NPCI is committed to consumer safety and reiterates its commitment to support the cause stated by RBI in letter and spirit. Recently, this new type of fraud has been identified by NPCI only and proactively informed to the regulator and other authorities.

Modus Operandi (Remote Screen Access)

·         Fraudster would lure the victim on some pretext to download an app called ‘AnyDesk’ from Playstore or Appstore.

·         The app code (9-digit number) would be generated on victim’s device which the fraudster would ask the victim to share.

·         Once fraudster inserts this app code (9-digit number) on his device, he would ask the victim to grant certain permissions which are similar to what are required while using other apps.

·         Post this, fraudster will gain access to victim’s device.

·         Further the mobile app credential is vished from the customer and the fraudster then can carry out transactions through the mobile app already installed on the customer’s device.

Notably the threat of this modus operandi applies to all applications (Payment/Banking/Wallets/Social Media) installed on the victim’s mobile device. Once access is granted by the victim, fraudster can not only initiate financial transactions but can also place online shopping orders or book rail/air tickets, etc. using the apps available on the victim’s phone or even steal any information stored in the mobile phone. While number of such fraud cases are few (5 cases reported so far), we are vigilant and urge consumers to be careful.

Bharat Panchal, Head of Risk Management, NPCI says, “While NPCI is continuously working towards enhancing security of its products & services from such attacks, this type of frauds can be better prevented by consumer education. The entire ecosystem including Banks & Fintech companies have to work collectively towards creating awareness & educating customers to refrain from sharing their account/card credentials, OTP/PIN and/or giving access to their mobile handsets to unscrupulous persons through such remote screen access apps. UPI platform is fully secure and is also 2FA enabled. NPCI in its endeavour to safeguard the UPI ecosystem will continue to proactively monitor the fraud space and help implement control measures wherever required.”

Taking this ahead, NPCI started with the Consumer Safety & Awareness program leveraging the mass media vehicles like newspapers and radio. Last week, NPCI started a consumer content sourcing initiative STOP. THINK. ACT on twitter to gather creative ideas from consumers to educate them. This is one of the kind initiative to co create content along with consumers, in true sense “for the consumers, by the consumers.”

Accenture Helps Metro de Madrid Balance Energy Efficiency and Passenger Comfort with AI

Accenture has helped Metro de Madrid develop and implement a self-learning AI-based ventilation system that minimizes energy costs and emissions and ensures high air quality in metro stations and commuters’ comfort.

The artificial intelligence (AI)-based system has enabled Metro de Madrid to reduce its energy costs for ventilation by 25 percent and cut CO2 emissions by 1,800 tons annually. Accenture will present the system at this year’s MWC (formerly known as Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona, Feb. 25-28.

On average, 2.3 million commuters use Metro de Madrid’s network of 294 kilometers of track and 301 stations every day. To help passengers stay cool inside stations, particularly during the hot summer months, Metro de Madrid operates 891 ventilation fans, which were consuming as much as 80 gigawatt hours of energy annually.

The Madrid Metro Ventilation experts worked with Accenture Applied Intelligence to develop a system that took inspiration from an unusual source: the coordinated foraging behavior of a bee colony. The system deploys an optimization algorithm that leverages vast amounts of data to explore every possible combination of air temperature, station architecture, train frequency, passenger load and electricity price throughout the day. The algorithm uses both historic and simulated data, factoring in outside and below-ground temperatures over the next 72 hours. Because the algorithm uses machine learning, the system gets better at predicting the optimal balance for each station on the network over time.

The system also includes a simulation engine and maintenance module, which allows for, among other things, tracking for failures in the fans’ operation. This enables Metro de Madrid to easily monitor and manage energy consumption, identify and respond to system deficiencies, and proactively conduct equipment maintenance.

“With the help from Accenture, the innovative ventilation system has enabled us to achieve the dual benefits of lower energy costs and a reduced environment impact,” said Isaac Centellas, Head of Engineering and Maintenance Division at Metro de Madrid. “Ensuring the comfort of our passengers while being highly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly is a true win-win outcome.”

Isabel Fernández, managing director for Accenture Applied Intelligence in Spain, said, “Our self-learning ventilation system shows how organizations and society can benefit from intelligent technologies. It’s an important milestone in our work for Metro de Madrid, and we’re excited to present it to the public at this year’s MWC, where applied AI will play a bigger role than ever.”
