LC3 - Low-Carbon Alternative to Cement Being Developed by Three Leading IITs and TARA

IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay and TARA have made significant progress in the development of a new cement blend that promises to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 30%. Applied globally, it could help bring down future global CO2 emissions by several notches. Over a hundred and fifty tonnes of the Limestone Calcined Clay Cement have already been produced and used in three buildings including a building of the Swiss Embassy in Delhi. In this regard, a stakeholders meet was organised recently at IIT Bombay.

Advantages of the new blend:
·         Up to 30% lower carbon-dioxide emissions: because only half the amount of Portland cement clinker is used
·         Lower cost: owing to abundantly available substitution materials
·         Lower capital: Existing equipment can be used, with small additional investment (
·         Energy efficient: lesser energy required for manufacture
·         Waste utilization: can use existing mining, overburden and other kaolinitic wastes
·         Conservation: extends the life of limestone reserves
·         High performance: Meets the needs of both industry and users and gives high performance on many benchmarks
·         Responds to the growing global demands for cement in emerging economies
·         Requires no additional training of construction workers

LC3 was developed in close collaboration with industrial partners and designed to integrate into existing cement production lines. Clay and limestone are available en masse in quarries around the world. And consumers will be able to use it the same way they use ordinary Portland cement today. The strength of the combination of calcined clay and ground limestone, which the researchers call LC3 for Limestone CalcinedClay Cement, lies in its chemistry. When used together, the aluminates from the calcined clay interact with the calcium carbonates from the limestone, leading to a less porous, and therefore stronger, cement paste. While in the past, these materials have been used individually to replace a small fraction of the cement, together, they can replace up to half without altering the performance of the final product.

Funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) the project is led by the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, which has partnered with three IITs along with Universidad Central de Las Villas, a university in Cuba. In India, the research groups involved are from IIT Delhi (IITD), IIT Bombay (IITB) and IIT Madras (IITM).  The application of the technology is led by Technology & Action for Rural Advancement (TARA), in association with cement companies advised by Dr.A.K.Chatterjee, ex. Director ACC.

The overall lead for the Indian team are Dr. Shashank Bishnoi of IITD and Dr. Soumen Maity of Tara. The other researchers involved are Prof Biswajit Bhattacharjee from IITD, Dr. Prakash Nanthagopalan from IITB, Prof. Manu Santhanam, Prof. Ravindra Gettu, Dr. Radhakrishna Pillai and Dr. Sivakumar Palaniappan from IITM, and Dr. Arun Kumar, Dr. Soumen Maity and Palas Kr. Haldar from TARA. The results from all partners have demonstrated the feasibility of the cement with field applications and laboratory tests and now the team is involved in further understanding the science that would help in the optimisation of the cement.

Commenting on the collaboration between the IITs, Prof. Manu Santhanam, IITM said “This is one of the few times that three leading IITs have joined hands to work on a project of this magnitude with a lot of challenges and industry interaction. The project is thus expected to open up new possibilities in high quality research collaboration between IITs, in addition to providing new avenues for industry – academia interaction.” The global significance of the project is explained by Dr. Soumen Maity, TARA, “The project showcases the application of science and technology to meet the sustainable developmental needs across the World. Through this research and technology development initiative India is poised to lead the transfer of cutting-edge technologies across the world, thereby becoming the global leader of knowledge application.”

Edge over traditional raw materials
Industrial waste products that are commonly used today – slag from the steel industry or fly ash from coal power plants are two examples – but are not available in large enough quantities at all locations to keep up with demand. Further, fly ash usage as a supplementary cementing material is restricted by its relatively low dosage and also the high variability in quality.

Cement demand in India
The cement production in India doubles every 8 to 12 years and this capacity expansion comes at a huge capital investment. LC3 provides an opportunity for producers to increase the capacity of their existing plants at a fraction of the incremental capital investment. The growth of the cement industry and therefore the infrastructure in India is often projected without considering a possible exhaustion of the natural resources necessary for this growth. For example, cement producers are already importing coal and the industry is already concerned about the quantity and quality of limestone reserves. By utilising low quality raw materials and by reducing processing energy, this cement will support the growth of the India. The trials in India demonstrate that this cement can be produced using technology that is widely available in the country and that the cement can be used by construction workers without any additional training required to handle the material.

Dr. Shashank Bishnoi, IITD explains “The market cost of cement (approximately Rs. 6 per kilogram) is less than a third of the same weight of bottled water. This makes cement appear to be a cheap and boring material not worth studying. But the fact that today we produce around 300 million tonnes of cement every year to support the growth of our nation and that this contributes to 7% of all our CO2emissions highlights the importance of development in the area.”

'Right Recipe Essential for a Successful Mall', Says Mirchandani, CEO of Brigade Retail

By Manu Sharma

High end brands like Hidesign, Jack n Jones, Zara, US Polo, Pepe, Apple, Gap, Vero Moda, and Sketchers bring in the footfalls and keep the malls buzzing with crowds. These brands also bring the much-needed moolah for the malls. With this strategy in mind, the Brigade Group, four years after enthralling Bangaloreans with its Orion Mall at Brigade Gateway has opened its second mall – Orion East – at Banaswadi Main Road, near ITC Factory.

Vishal Mirchandani, CEO Retail and Commercial, Brigade Group says,“Despite tough competition from other malls, high street retail and of course the e-commerce sites that have mushroomed lately, our success rate of our existing mall has been good. We have the right recipe essential for a successful mall. Our team has given great importance to factors like design and layout, the mall’s brand positioning, location and how well they cater to the needs of the target segment.”

“Also, like our existing Orion mall in Brigade Gateway, we shall evolve into family destinations rather than just remaining a shopping centres. Presently a 5 screens Cinepolis has come up that will help roll out award winning films and much more such entertainment will follow,” he said.

Already the mall claims of an 80 percent occupancy rate with most major brands like Apple, Hidesign, Body Shop, Mothercare setting up outlets in the mall. “Over the next 4-6 weeks shall see the whole mall fully operational with all other major brands coming in,” remarks Mirchandani.

Adding that e-commerce sites has been successful mainly for smaller brands. While brands like Sunglass Hut, Levis, Puma, Adidas, Pepe, Arrow, Soch, Global Desi among others have more sales in the brick and mortar stores and they have already taken space in our mall and will move in over the next few weeks.

With an investment of Rs 150 crore, the mall with an build-up area of 2.65 lakh sq.ft., brings 350 odd brands covering more than 70 premium and affordable lifestyle categories. Besides India’s leading multi-brand chains - Shoppers Stop and Westside will be the anchor stores. The mall is five storied high and has amble parking space of about 500 car parks. The management of the Brigade Group have projected a footfall of 15,000-25,000 on weekdays and 30,000-45,000 on weekends.

M.R. Jaishankar, CMD, Brigade Group says, “East of Bangalore is still under served and we have grabbed on the opportunity to open the mall here. Orion East will serve the strong premium catchment of Ulsoor, Frazer Town, Cox Town, Benson Town, HRBR Layout, Kammanahalli, Lingarajapuram, Rammurthy Nagar and other surrounding areas. Though our second mall we have continued to extend our relationship with our retail partners and hope to see optimized results similar to the earlier mall at Brigade Gateway.”

The Brigade Group plans to open two more such high-end malls in Bangalore in the future. “One of our properties on Old Madras Road is getting completed and will be opened shortly.”

Limited Opportunities for Tier II and Tier III Towns

In respect to the opening shopping malls in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns across  the country, “I forsee limited opportunities in such towns. It all depends on the people purchase power (PPP) in such towns. Towns like Surat, Chandigarh, Lucknow have high PPP index but I see potential only in the four metro cities down south. More ever, some high end brands may not find relevance in smaller cities.” concludes Jaishankar.

Winners of the TiE SV Smart Cities Hackathon "Tackling the World’s Urban Social Issues"

TiE Silicon Valley SmartCities Hackathon, powered by Atomiton, enables coders, non-profits and social activists to produce solutions to improve cities across the globe. This year's winning teams have produced technology for some of our most pressing waste management issues, especially for developing countries.

TiE Silicon Valley is proud to announce the winners of the 2016 Smart Cities Hackathon initiative featuring the theme "Tackling the World’s Urban Social Issues". The event featured more than 100 teams who used their coding skills to produce innovative solutions for some of the most pressing environmental problems in the world. Three teams pulled ahead of the rest this year, with Team Culminant walking away with first prize.

Cleaning Up Our World Through Code
Through entrepreneurship and stellar leadership, this year’s technological solutions are on track to put a major dent in the waste that threatens our global environment. The hackathon featured highly talented teams from over 10 countries and 50 cities coming together to brainstorm, code and create in the name of a greater social cause.

Six outstanding projects were shortlisted for more detailed judging — and they did not disappoint. Three key problems were available for teams to address, including parking, waste and water management. However, the three top teams chose to specifically address the waste management issue. After all, the challenge for waste management is huge, with the World Bank estimating that global solid waste is set to increase by 70 percent by 2025, which will generate six million tons of waste per day. This problem will require huge sums of money to manage, which are expected to exceed $375 billion annually by 2025, with developing nations baring the brunt of these costs.

In order to find solutions for the future, the first place Team Culminant produced a brilliant worker routing system. This Internet-of-Things (IoT) solution offers real-time tracking of all the top sites where garbage is accumulating and other waste management trends, and then efficiently reroutes workers according to this data. Their intuitive UI dashboard even helps tracks company balances and revenue to help waste managers as they build a smart and efficient marketplace for waste management. Their solution earned them a $5,000 prize and passes to TiEcon 2016, world’s leading annual conference on entrepreneurship.

A $3,000 second prize plus TiEcon passes went to Team Vermigold, which offered a self-learning waste management collection system that not only maximizes garbage collection in the minimum amount of time, but also grows revenue for waste management companies.

Team Vishwakarma snatched the third place prize of $2,000 plus TiEcon passes by devising a cost-effective trash bin system that uses odor sensors to improve metrics such as trash bin usage, dump sites and company revenue.

The event was made a reality through the tireless support and resources of our partners including BayBrazil, the City of Palo Alto, Outsource Brazil, and the academia.

Outstanding Submissions From Finalists
Vipin Jain, Chair of TiE Smart Cities, stated that, “It was very satisfying to see the quality of work produced by the finalists. They approached the problem differently making various observations about the environment, available resources, costs and resident behavior. Team Culminant stood out in terms of their approach to problem-solving, attention to detail, design, implementation and visualization, all leading to an optimized solution that delivered an impressive business and functional outcome. TiE congratulates all of the winning teams for a job well done.”

Submissions were evaluated based on key criteria, including meeting the business goals, functionality, usability, originality and articulation.
