MIT-WPU’s NSRTC 2025 Ends On A High Note With Insights And A Call For Global Collaboration In AI, Sustainability, And Science-Driven Policy

MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) successfully hosted the 2nd National Scientists’ Round Table Conference (NSRTC 2025) in Pune, gathering over 70 of India’s most distinguished scientists, researchers, and thought leaders including a total of 36 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Awardee and Padma awardee scientists. The three-day conference created a fertile ground for interdisciplinary collaboration, intellectual exchange, and policy-shaping dialogue.

The conference revolved around four transformative themes—Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Materials and Processing, Digital Transformation and Sustainability, and Healthcare, Pharma and Biotechnology—each critically linked to India's developmental aspirations. These discussions were further enriched by thought sessions exploring the “Premise of Nobel Prize–Inspired Research” and the convergence of science and spirituality.

The Artificial Intelligence track featured discussions on AI’s convergence with cryptography, quantum science, astronomy, and education. Experts debated the possibility of AI generating disruptive scientific theories and explored its future in 6G networks and multilingual applications.

The Advanced Materials and Processing sessions emphasized self-reliance through nanotechnology, solar energy, 2D materials, and metal circularity. Notable research on “Black Gold” nanomaterials for CO₂ reduction and calls to move beyond lithium-ion batteries underscored India’s push for energy sustainability.

In the Healthcare, Pharma, and Biotechnology theme, global experts explored AI-driven drug discovery, pandemic preparedness through the One Health approach, and strategies to reverse Type 2 diabetes via lifestyle interventions. Discussions also touched on brain drain, biomaterials, regenerative medicine, and diagnostics for diseases such as cancer, HIV, and tuberculosis.

Sessions under Digital Transformation and Sustainability included talks on green chemistry, innovations in chemical manufacturing, and India’s nuclear energy potential. Discussions also covered agricultural resilience through salt-tolerant rice, and the correlation between energy consumption and the Human Development Index (HDI).

The conference also underscored the importance of ethical and philosophical grounding in scientific pursuits. In a joint reflection, Dr. Vishwanath D. Karad, Founder of MIT Group of Institutions, and Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, Former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, emphasized the synergy between science and spirituality and called upon students to apply science for societal transformation.

The event concluded with a valedictory ceremony graced by distinguished guests, including Prof. G.D. Yadav, Emeritus Professor and Former Vice-Chancellor, ICT, Mumbai; Dr. Shekhar Mande, Former Director General, CSIR, New Delhi; Prof. Sagar Mitra, IIT Bombay; and Prof. Ashok Joshi, Founding Director, Microlin Inc., USA, along with the conference convenors Dr. Bharat Kale, Dr. Anup Kale, and Prof. Siddharth Chakrabarti.

Dr. Rahul V. Karad, Executive President of MIT-WPU, during the conference said stated that research is the foundation of national development, and that through NSRTC, the university aims to inspire young minds to think originally and pursue impactful careers in science and innovation. He also noted that it was encouraging to see over 600 students actively engaging with more than 100 leading scientists from across the country.

The event marked a meaningful step toward building a future-ready scientific community one that can help shape India’s journey to becoming a global leader in innovation and knowledge. The ideas shared, the collaborations sparked, and the energy of the participants have laid the groundwork for lasting impact.

Cybercrime 2.0: Evolving Ransomware Calls For Urgent Cybersecurity Action

SecurEyes CEO Karmendra Kohli Urges India Inc. to Prioritise Awareness, Resilience During Ransomware Awareness Month

As the global threat landscape shifts, ransomware continues to dominate as one of the fastest-evolving and most damaging forms of cybercrime. Marking Ransomware Awareness Month, Mr. Karmendra Kohli, CEO and Cofounder of SecurEyes, has called on Indian organisations and citizens to step up cybersecurity readiness and treat ransomware not as a one-time threat, but as a persistent risk demanding long-term vigilance.

Ransomware attacks work by encrypting digital files and systems, rendering them inaccessible until a ransom is paid—often in cryptocurrency. In recent years, this criminal tactic has morphed from isolated malware into a full-fledged industry. The emergence of Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) has enabled even low-skilled attackers to rent or purchase ready-made ransomware kits, making advanced attacks more accessible than ever before.

“Ransomware is no longer just malicious code—it's a commercial operation with its own business model, partners, and service delivery,” said Mr. Kohli. “The barrier to entry has dropped, while the sophistication of attacks continues to rise.”

Attackers today are not only locking systems but also engaging in double extortion: stealing sensitive data and threatening to leak it publicly if the ransom is not paid. This puts organizations at greater legal and reputational risk, particularly under India’s newly implemented Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDPA) and other global privacy regulations.

Adding to the complexity is the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by cybercriminals. AI is being weaponised to automate phishing attacks, identify weak targets, evade detection systems, and even conduct ransom negotiations through intelligent chatbots. This AI-powered shift is making it more difficult for traditional defences to keep pace.

In response, Mr. Kohli advocates for a multi-layered defence strategy. He identifies human error as the most common entry point for ransomware, urging companies to invest in ongoing cyber awareness programmes through interactive sessions, visual reminders, and periodic drills.

Beyond awareness, technical safeguards remain critical. Regular software updates, strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and avoidance of pirated tools form the baseline of digital hygiene. Most essential to recover from a ransomware attack is the habit of creating frequent offline backups, which allow affected systems to be restored without giving in to ransom demands.

For enterprises deploying Security Operations Centres (SOCs) to monitor networks in real time, implementing network segmentation to contain breaches, and developing robust incident response frameworks to build cybersecurity resilience are of paramount importance. He also emphasizes to look closely into third-party vendor risks, as attackers are increasingly infiltrating organizations through compromised partners in the supply chain.

“In the event of an attack, isolate affected systems immediately and report the breach to cybersecurity teams and law enforcement,” he advised. “Decision of paying ransom or not has its own dilemmas and a stand has to be taken based on situational awareness during an attack; with a collective understanding that such decisions have their own legal and ethical complications, and recovery is never guaranteed.”

Ransomware is not just a technical issue, it’s a risk to business continuity, public trust, and national security. The time to act is now.
