Pidilite To Manufacture Litokol And Tenax Products From Italy In India

Bangalore: Pidilite Industries Ltd, a leading manufacturer of construction and specialty chemicals, announced the launch of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities under its two joint ventures, Pidilite Litokol Pvt Ltd (PLPL) and Tenax Pidilite Pvt Ltd (TPPL), in Amod, Gujarat. Toyota Mobility Foundation Launches $9 M Global City Challenge To Promote Drive Safe, Inclusive And Sustainable Innovation In Mobility


* Launches a three-year Sustainable Cities Challenge to bring cities and innovators together including India

* Three winning cities from across the world will work with innovators to tailor solutions to overcome their mobility barriers

The Toyota Mobility Foundation, in partnership with Challenge Works and World Resources Institute, has launched a $9 million global challenge to help cities adapt to the future, with the potential to transform the lives of millions across countries including India

As cities grow and evolve, the challenges of moving people and goods in reliable, efficient, and inclusive ways have never been more essential. At the same time, opportunities to apply advances in transport modes, infrastructure design, operations, energy options, and connected data systems have never been more promising.

The Sustainable Cities Challenge aims to improve the lives of people by increasing access to jobs, education and other essential services. It will bring cities and innovators together to implement mobility solutions that could reduce carbon, improve accessibility, and use data to build resilient transport systems.

Ryan Klem, Director of Programs at the Toyota Mobility Foundation, said: “Our experience over the past decade has underscored the importance of the local city’s buy-in and engagement with our activities. Throughout the Sustainable Cities Challenge, we are looking to come alongside cities to find innovative solutions in the areas they identify as critical to develop a scalable model for the cities of tomorrow.”

Call for Entries

Entries are invited from across the world including Indian cities, from 21st June 2023 upto 18th September 2023.  Entry to the first stage of the Challenge is open to city leaders and municipal corporations, governments, transport departments and other related local and regional agencies.

Entries should be submitted under one or more of the following three themes:

Expanding access to safe, affordable, and inclusive modes of transportation.

Harnessing the power of data to create connected and resilient mobility ecosystems

Reducing environmental impact through low-carbon and renewable energy solutions

Shortlisted cities will be invited to attend a capacity building academy in the US and will receive support developing their challenge design, becoming part of a wider network of other innovative city teams.

In February 2024, three winning cities will be selected to host a City Challenge to attract entries from global innovators. Innovators could be homegrown - living in the city or country chosen - or from anywhere across the globe, but with solutions applicable and adapted to the winning cities.

The winning innovators for each city will be announced in late 2024, and the cities and innovators will share $9 million in funding to test and roll out their solutions.

Increase mobility solutions for a more sustainable future

Many cities are now adapting to new behaviors and lifestyles, as our lives move increasingly online, and patterns of work change. With more than half of the world’s population currently living in cities, the United Nations predicts this to increase to two-thirds by 2050. Additionally, cities are responsible for 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions. 

The Sustainable Cities Challenge is funded by the Toyota Mobility Foundation and has been designed in partnership with Challenge Works and World Resources Institute. Challenge Works is an international leader in developing challenge programs to drive new thinking and find creative solutions to problems facing society. World Resources Institute is a global research organization which works with partners to develop practical solutions that improve people’s lives and ensure that nature can thrive.

Kathy Nothstine, Head of Future Cities at Challenge Works, said: “Brilliant people all over the world are working hard to create innovative solutions to help mobility systems work better, and with a lower carbon footprint. The Sustainable Cities Challenge will help those innovators interface with cities to test and adapt solutions according to local needs to improve people's lives. Challenges like this can act as catalysts for change by accelerating innovation in real world settings.”

In addition to helping cities decarbonize, transforming mobility systems will help cities become more inclusive and accessible for the people living in them. Currently, 1.2 billion people living in cities do not have access to one or more core services.

Ben Welle, Director of Integrated Transport and Innovation at World Resources Institute’s Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, said: “Cities are in need of innovations to foster sustainable mobility that reduces emissions, improves health, and increases access to jobs and opportunity for all. The Sustainable Cities Challenge is an excellent opportunity for cities globally to build capacity and support innovators to work hand in hand with officials.”

TKM Adopts ‘Miyawaki Concept’ Driven Afforestation, Creates Dense Forest At Its Plant Facility


Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), in line with its six aspirational ‘Global Environmental Challenges 2050’, continues to set new benchmarks towards conservation of the environment through its afforestation initiatives under its sixth eco-challenge ‘Living in Harmony with Nature’. As the company celebrates the environment month this June, it is noteworthy to mention about Toyota’s tree plantation activities which are strongly driven by adopting a unique concept namely the ‘Miyawaki Method of Afforestation’ since 2009, and TKM was the first corporate in India to implement such plantation methodology. TKM’s steadfast commitment to sustainability and ecological restoration is yielding remarkable results, as evidenced by the numerous advantages of the Miyawaki approach.

This ground-breaking approach, championed by renowned botanist (Late) Dr. Akira Miyawaki, has enabled dense, multi-layered forests using native species to mimic natural forest regeneration processes. The Miyawaki Concept focuses towards restoring and reconstructing the forests based on the concept of “Potential Natural Vegetation”, and this very application has helped in creating a ‘Natural Forest’, within the premises of TKM, by planting native species to create biodiversity and aid food chain and ecology.

By doing so, TKM not only restored native habitats but also created self-sustaining ecosystem that contribute to a healthier planet. Under the guidance of Dr. Akira Miyawaki himself, TKM initiated its maiden Miyawaki plantation drive, way back in 2009, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards conservation of greenery and eco-consciousness. Since that momentous day, TKM's plantation drives have continued to evolve and expanded to 112 acres of green cover within the factory premises, out of which 32 acres of afforestation has been developed using Miyawaki method. The selection of plant species involved a visit to nearest national park & other protected forests with the support of Forestry Professors and Senior officials from Forest department. More than 120 species of Forest habitat (Trees, shrubs, climbers & herbs) were identified, and 51 species were shortlisted for planting at TKM. Today, Toyota’s manufacturing facility, located in Bidadi, proudly boasts more than 328,000 saplings of over 700 native species planted within its premises. The results have been truly awe-inspiring, with a remarkable increase in biodiversity observed over the years. From a mere 181 plant species, the count has surged to an impressive 700, while the number of faunal species has risen from 76 to 264. The vibrant ecosystem now encompasses 88 bird varieties, 38 butterfly species, 107 insects, 17 reptiles, 8 mammals, and 6 amphibians, reflecting the successful development of a thriving native forest ecosystem.

Furthermore, TKM has created an experiential environmental learning centre ‘Ecozone’ (spread across 25 acres with 17 theme parks and home to 65,000 trees with 650 native species) for children, teachers, community members and other stakeholders, within its manufacturing facility aimed at creating the environment leaders and change champions for the future, to usher in desired behavioural change in the communities. This green zone depicts the creation of dense forest within the plant facility using the ‘Miyawaki Concept’ of plantation. The forests are dominantly planted with species of 4 major forest types such as Dry Deciduous, Moist Deciduous, Semi-evergreen and Evergreen Forest, covering 21 different sub-concepts such as Pollination meadows, herbal garden, plants for spices etc.

Needless to mention, TKM's afforestation endeavours have yielded far-reaching benefits, including significant carbon sequestration and noise reduction. A comprehensive study conducted in collaboration with experts from Bangalore University revealed that the Miyawaki method excels in carbon sequestration, capturing an impressive 30.86 tons of carbon per acre. In contrast, traditional pit method plantations recorded a carbon sequestration rate of 8.45 tons per acre. These findings underscore the Miyawaki method's efficacy in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. Additionally, the Miyawaki green cover surrounding the vehicle testing area within the TKM campus has proven to be instrumental in reducing noise levels and settling dust. The dense vegetation of the Miyawaki forests has exhibited a remarkable 20% greater effectiveness in noise reduction compared to pit plantations, exemplifying the multiple benefits derived from these green initiatives.

In a significant recognition of these efforts, the Miyawaki method of building climate-resilient forest covers received high praise from across the world. During a recent episode of 'Mann Ki Baat', our Honourable Prime Minister also acknowledged ‘Miyawaki’ method of plantation, shedding light on its numerous advantages in enabling diverse ecological biodiversity. This further reinforces TKM's commitment to environmental conservation and serves as an inspiration for others to adopt sustainable practices. Lam Research Introduces World’s First Bevel Deposition Solution To Increase Yield In Chip Production

Lam Research Corp. (Nasdaq: LRCX) today introduced Coronus DX, the industry’s first bevel deposition solution optimized to address key manufacturing challenges in next-generation logic, 3D NAND and advanced packaging applications. As semiconductors continue to scale, manufacturing becomes increasingly complex with hundreds of process steps needed to build nanometer-sized devices on a silicon wafer. In a single step, Coronus DX deposits a proprietary layer of protective film on both sides of the wafer edge that helps prevent defects and damage that can often occur during advanced semiconductor manufacturing. This powerful protection increases yield and enables chipmakers to implement new leading-edge processes for the production of next-generation chips. Coronus DX is the newest addition to the Coronus® product family and extends Lam’s leadership in bevel technology.

Deposition Adds Critical Protection During Process Integration

Complementing Coronus bevel etch technology, Coronus DX is a game-changer for chipmakers by enabling new device structures. Repeated layers of processing can cause residues and roughness to accumulate along the wafer edge where they may flake off, drift to other areas, and create defects that cause a semiconductor device to fail. For example:

In 3D packaging applications, material from back-end-of-line can migrate and become a contamination source in future processing. Roll-off in the wafer edge profile can impact wafer bonding quality.

Long wet etch processes in 3D NAND manufacturing may result in severe substrate damage at the edge.

When those defects cannot be etched away, Coronus DX deposits a thin dielectric layer of protection on the bevel. This precise and tunable deposition helps resolve these common issues that may impact semiconductor quality.

Proprietary Process Drives Yield Improvement

Coronus DX enables best-in-class precision wafer centering and process control, including integrated metrology, to ensure consistency and repeatability of the process. Coronus products incrementally increase wafer yield, delivering an additional 0.2 to 0.5 percent of yield per etch or deposition step, which can result in up to 5 percent improvement across the wafer flow. Manufacturers running more than 100,000 wafer starts per month may yield millions of extra die with Coronus – potentially worth millions of dollars – over the course of a year.

Every Major Chipmaker Uses Coronus

First introduced in 2007, the Coronus product line is used by every major semiconductor manufacturer, with several thousand chambers installed globally. Lam’s Coronus product family is the industry’s first mass production-proven bevel technology. Its Coronus and Coronus HP solutions are etch products designed to prevent defects by removing layers along the edge. Coronus solutions are used in the manufacturing of logic, memory and specialty devices, including leading-edge 3D devices. Coronus DX is now being used in high-volume manufacturing at leading customer fabs around the world.
