ROHM’s New 2nd Generation Terahertz Wave Oscillation Device Delivers 4 Times Higher Output Power
Occupying the frequency region between radio waves and light, terahertz waves combine the penetrating properties of radio waves with the straight-line propagation of light. Because they exhibit unique absorption characteristics for polymers, moisture, and other substances, they are expected to be used in non-destructive testing without ionizing radiation, medical and healthcare applications, and high-resolution radar sensing. However, conventional terahertz systems require large equipment and high implementation costs, making it difficult for new companies and research institutions to enter the field or pursue commercialization.
Since the late 2000s, ROHM has engaged in joint research with the Institute of Science Tokyo, Osaka University, and many other universities and research institutions to develop THz wave oscillation and detection devices using RTDs. In 2024, ROHM began offering samples of 1st Generation products, achieving substantial downsizing and cost reduction compared with conventional methods.
To address the growing demand for improved signal quality in application development, ROHM has now developed a 2nd Generation terahertz wave oscillation device. The device maintains the same compact 0.5 × 0.5mm chip size as the 1st Generation product while adopting an internal structure that enables higher output power. As a result, output power has been increased to approximately 4 times that of the 1st Generation product, reaching a maximum of 40µW. The higher output power improves the detectability of THz waves after transmission through or reflection from target objects – making the device well suited for applications such as sensing and imaging that require high signal quality.
The device is mounted in the same 4.0 × 4.3mm PLCC package, maintaining the industry’s smallest* footprint. This enables evaluation environments to be built even in space-constrained settings. In addition, compared with other THz generation methods, the RTD approach generates less heat and consumes less power, reducing application development load at both companies and research institutions
*ROHM August 4, 2026 study
Sales of the RTD-EVK-G2 evaluation kit, which includes samples of the 2nd Generation wave oscillation device, are planned to begin in August 2026 at $3,300 per set (excluding tax). By enabling evaluation at a lower cost than other methods, the kit supports the development of a wide range of applications, including non-destructive testing; imaging and sensing in the medical and healthcare sectors; material identification; and moisture detection. ROHM will also continue sales of 1st Generation devices for applications that prioritize low power consumption. For further information, please contact a sales representative or visit the contact page on ROHM’s website. Purchase of the evaluation kit requires signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with ROHM.
Going forward, ROHM will continue to expand the possibilities for THz wave application development and contribute to the early commercialization and real-world implementation of terahertz technology, accelerating its deployment across a broad range of industries.
Professor Safumi Suzuki, Laboratory for Future Interdisciplinary Research of Science and Technology, Institute of Integrated Research, Institute of Science Tokyo
“Terahertz waves are expected to be applied in a wide range of fields, including non-destructive testing, imaging and sensing, and wireless communications. At the same time, commercialization continues to face major challenges, such as the need for large-scale equipment and high implementation costs.
The RTD terahertz wave device developed through many years of joint research with ROHM is compact, power saving, and does not require cooling. It can also be introduced at low cost, helping companies and research institutions begin terahertz wave research.
With the launch of the 2nd Generation device featuring significantly improved oscillation output, I expect development of applications requiring higher signal quality to accelerate.”
Ken Nakahara, General Manager of ROHM Research & Development Center, ROHM Co., Ltd.
“With the launch of RTD-EVK-G2, we expect to make another major step forward toward the practical implementation of terahertz technology.
Feedback from users of the 1st Generation device revealed strong demand for higher-output devices. With this 2nd Generation product, we have succeeded in increasing oscillation output to approximately 4 times that of the 1st Generation device while maintaining a compact size, bringing us closer to meeting those needs.
Terahertz technology is steadily progressing toward real-world implementation. ROHM will continue working together with customers, partners, universities, research institutions, and government agencies to support the development of terahertz wave applications and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society.”

Terminology
Resonant Tunneling Diode (RTD)
A semiconductor device used as a terahertz-wave source that offers advantages such as compact size, low power consumption, and room-temperature oscillation. Following extensive research and development with various universities and research institutions, ROHM has successfully achieved in-house production of RTD devices capable of efficient terahertz wave oscillation and detection.
PLCC
Short for Plastic Leaded Chip Carrier, a type of IC package used for semiconductor integrated circuits.
Other THz generation methods
Conventional methods for generating terahertz waves include ‘frequency multiplication,’ which converts an electrical signal into higher-order harmonic frequencies, and ‘photomixing,’ where two laser beams of different wavelengths are combined in a photomixer to generate a terahertz signal at their difference frequency. While effective, both approaches typically require costly, medium- to large-scale equipment, limiting their practicality for compact, cost-sensitive applications.

FarmerChat: Digital Green's AI Farming Assistant Crosses 10 Lakh Users In India, Smarter 2.0 Version Launched
Available in five languages, FarmerChat offers timely, context-aware guidance across a farmer's decisions, from crop and pest management to livestock care and weather, even in low-connectivity environments.
What FarmerChat is, and how it works
Smallholder farmers face a range of challenges that make their incomes highly volatile from one year to the next. Among the biggest is access to timely, contextual advice: the knowledge exists, but reaching it at the moment a decision must be made is hard. To help farmers navigate these everyday choices, Digital Green built FarmerChat, an AI-powered app that provides tailored advice for on-farm decisions. A conversational interface lets farmers ask questions by voice, photo or text — accommodating both low literacy and the reality that many field problems are easier to photograph than to name.
FarmerChat answers field-level questions across the farming cycle: crop planning, pest and disease management, livestock care, weather forecasts, and inputs. Rather than waiting for a farmer to think of a question, it surfaces the right guidance at the right time, aligned to crop stages, seasons and livestock growth.
Powering the assistant are fine-tuned language models, combined with Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and expert-validated datasets, and refined through reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). Crucially, its outputs are not left unchecked: local agronomists and veterinarians regularly validate the responses farmers receive, feeding corrections back into the models — so answers stay grounded in verified agronomy rather than generic AI output. The result is guidance that is technically accurate, locally relevant, and actionable in the field.
For over 15 years, Digital Green pioneered a video-based advisory model: farmer-made videos screened at village group meetings, reaching millions of farmers across India. FarmerChat carries that legacy forward with AI: the same trusted, community-rooted advice, now delivered to each farmer directly, on demand, in their own language. More broadly, it shows how pairing AI with continuous farmer feedback and expert-validated knowledge can make trusted agricultural advisory cost-effective, scalable, and genuinely farmer-driven.
Reaching farmers at a fraction of the cost
FarmerChat marks a fundamental shift in the economics of agricultural extension. Traditional, in-person advisory can cost ~₹3,300 per farmer each year. Digital Green's video-based model brought that down sharply, and FarmerChat has reduced it further to ~₹33 per farmer a year, making it possible to reach far more farmers with quality advice than conventional systems ever could.
In India, FarmerChat has already answered over 30 lakh queries, with women making up around 45% of its users. Farmers are not just using the tool — they are acting on it: around 60% active users act on the advice they receive, and 91% report greater confidence in their farming decisions, according to a third-party evaluation by 60 Decibels.
FarmerChat 2.0: A redesign led by farmers
The rollout of FarmerChat's first version saw strong early adoption, with 67% of active users applying advice from the application, according to a third-party evaluation by IDinsight.
But farmers themselves pointed to the next step. Over the year, they moved away from typing their questions, choosing instead to speak to the assistant or photograph the problem in their field, and, notably, those who used the image feature proved significantly more likely to act on the advice. FarmerChat 2.0 locks these preferences into the design and moves the app away from waiting for a farmer to type a question. Suggested starter prompts — tailored to a farmer's crop, location and season — now surface the questions farmers should be asking based on where they are in the growing calendar.
Version 2.0 also introduces a simpler, clearer interface and advice that adapts to each farmer, through new advisory cards and an evolving farmer profile shaped by their crop, location, season and past questions.
The road ahead
Building on this momentum, Digital Green India aims to add another 35 lakh farmers to the platform by 2028 — deepening women farmers' participation, driving adoption of climate-smart practices, and improving household incomes.
"Everything in FarmerChat 2.0 came from listening to farmers. Through millions of interactions, they shared that they wanted advice suited to their crop, their season and their language, delivered the way they naturally communicate. The assistant was rebuilt around exactly that. But it is still evolving. The next step is the Agricultural AI Harness, an ecosystem foundation where trusted services for advisory, weather, markets and schemes plug in, powered by reasoning and memory that knows each farmer's context. One farmer, one trusted place, every service they need. And benchmarking quality rigorously, combining human-led feedback with automated evaluation, will continue so the advice a farmer receives only grows more accurate, relevant and trustworthy", said Nidhi Bhasin, CEO, Digital Green India.
About Digital Green India
Digital Green India is a social impact organisation that uses technology, data and community-led approaches to strengthen farmer livelihoods and enable inclusive development at the last mile. Founded in 2008, spun out of Microsoft Research, it has continued to innovate at the intersection of agriculture, technology and human-centred design — a journey that led to the deployment of FarmerChat, a multilingual AI-powered assistant delivering timely, contextual and hyperlocal guidance to farming communities.
