SIS Pitches Launches ‘A Guide To Cricket Pitch Systems’ With Objective To Enhance Quality Of Playing Surfaces

SIS Pitches, a global leader in the design, manufacture, and installation of sports surfaces, launches a comprehensive ‘Guide to Cricket Pitch Systems’ aimed at informing stakeholders of the game about the various types of cricket pitches, their benefits, and the specific challenges they address. This guide, poised to become an indispensable tool for cricket administrators, ground staff, coaches, and players who are involved in cricket pitch management, provides in-depth knowledge and practical solutions for creating and maintaining high-quality cricket pitches.

SIS Grass, the independently researched and approved hybrid grass technology from SIS Pitches, has been setting new standards in cricket pitch technology globally since 2017. The hybrid pitches combine the best of natural grass with synthetic reinforcement, offering unparalleled durability and performance. India’s first-ever SISGrass hybrid pitch was unveiled in May this year at the picturesque Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.

The primary objective of ‘A Guide to Cricket Pitch Systems’ is to offer a detailed exploration of different pitch systems, highlighting their unique characteristics, benefits, and potential drawbacks. SIS Pitches aims to empower stakeholders with the knowledge necessary to make informed decisions that will enhance the quality and playability of cricket pitches across various levels of the sport.

Paul Taylor, former England cricketer and SIS Grass International Sales Director (Cricket), said, “This guide is an educational resource for anyone involved in the management and upkeep of cricket pitches. In today's fast-evolving cricket landscape, understanding the nuances of different pitch systems is crucial. Our guide provides comprehensive insights into natural grass, hybrid, and artificial pitches, detailing their specific advantages and challenges. It is designed to equip cricket administrators, ground staff, coaches, and players with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions that will enhance the quality and longevity of cricket pitches. By leveraging our expertise and cutting-edge technology, we aim to support the Indian cricket community in maintaining high-performance playing surfaces that meet the demands of modern cricket. Whether you are managing a local club or an international venue, this guide will serve as an invaluable tool in ensuring that your pitches are always in prime condition.”

Highlights of ‘A Guide to Cricket Pitch Systems’

TYPES OF DAMAGE:

1.       Superficial Damage: Caused by gameplay, such as bowler’s foot marks and batters marking the guard.

2.       Preparation Damage: Low mowing, extensive rolling, and heat exposure can severely damage the grass plant.

3.       Covering Pitches: Reduces airflow and increases temperature, potentially harming turf health.

4.       Frequent Usage: Preparing pitches more than four times per season leads to significant potential deterioration.

TYPES OF CRICKET PITCHES:

1.       Natural Grass Pitches are the traditional choice, offering an authentic feel with varying bounces and paces, making them widely accessible and approved for all competitions. They are also more affordable compared to other pitch systems. However, these pitches require frequent maintenance, which is heavily impacted by weather conditions. Their ability to accommodate extended hours of play is limited, and the recovery period can be slow, sometimes preventing reuse. Additionally, they are susceptible to diseases and pests, leading to maintenance challenges and potential disruptions in play.

2.       Drop-In Pitches are versatile for multi-use venues, such as stadiums hosting various events, as they reduce surface damage. They allow for pitch preparation in controlled conditions, ensuring consistency, and can be protected from adverse weather when maintained off-site. However, they come with a high initial cost and a complex, time-consuming installation process. They do not offer additional hours of play compared to natural grass pitches and provide less time to prepare pitches for specific playing characteristics, reducing the home advantage.

3.       100% Artificial Carpet Pitches are cost-effective with low initial installation costs and require less maintenance, needing only basic upkeep and periodic surface re-levelling. They are also capable of withstanding adverse weather conditions. On the downside, they are not suitable for professional cricket and can offer an inconsistent playing surface, with unusual bounces for fast and spin bowlers. The creases can tear if inappropriate footwear is used, and they lack the traditional variability, resulting in uniform bounces and paces.

4.       Carpet Hybrid Pitches show less wear and better recovery, with the adaptability to be integrated into new and existing pitches. However, they can take up to 20 months to become playable, and their performance results are still being evaluated. They have a shorter lifespan compared to stitched systems and can be easily damaged due to the 50mm carpet height.

5.       Artificial Hybrid Pitches require minimal maintenance and are quick to install and prepare for matches. They can simulate variations in bounce, seam, and spin. However, they do not contain any natural grass, lack the traditional look of a cricket pitch, and are costly to remove and dispose of in an environmentally friendly manner.

6.       Stitched Hybrid Pitches offer proven longevity and excellent return on investment. They ensure faster grass recovery after matches and maintain a consistent playing surface, supporting extended hours of play. They also ensure strong grass coverage and visual appeal. However, they require approximately 10% more water for preparation, take 3-8 weeks to be ready for use depending on climatic conditions, and curators need time to slightly adjust preparation methods.

Each type of pitch system offers unique benefits and addresses specific challenges, tailored to the diverse needs and circumstances of the cricket community. This comprehensive understanding will enable stakeholders to make informed decisions, enhancing the quality and longevity of cricket pitches.

Exploring The Rise Of Foreign Medical Education Across India

*     Mr. Kadwin Pillai, Director of Transworld Educare and Chairman of Kings International Medical Academy

In an era characterised by globalisation and technological advancement, medical education has increasingly become an international pursuit. Aspiring doctors are now looking beyond their home countries, drawn by the promise of quality education, diverse clinical exposure, and the opportunity to immerse themselves in different cultures. This trend mirrors a broader movement towards internationalisation in higher education, where global mobility and cross-cultural competencies hold significant value.

The Allure of Foreign Medical Education

Foreign medical education offers numerous benefits that attract many students. Key advantages include access to advanced medical training, exposure to diverse patient populations, and often, more affordable education compared to private medical colleges in their home countries such as India. Countries like the Philippines and Georgia have emerged as favored destinations for medical aspirants due to their robust educational frameworks, globally recognised degrees, and comparatively lower costs of living and tuition fees.

Quality and Recognition of Foreign Medical Degrees

A pivotal concern for students and their families is the quality and recognition of foreign medical degrees. Esteemed institutions in countries like the Philippines adhere to an American-style medical education system, renowned for its rigorous curriculum and extensive clinical training. Moreover, many of these institutions hold accreditation from global bodies like the World Health Organisation (WHO) and are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, ensuring the legitimacy and international acceptance of their conferred degrees. While countries like Russia and Ukraine are known for providing excellent medical education, ongoing geopolitical tensions have led many students to seek alternatives. As a result, there has been a noticeable shift towards applying to other countries that offer stable environments and comparable educational standards.

Cultural and Professional Enrichment

Studying medicine abroad also fosters substantial cultural and professional growth. Students gain firsthand experience in diverse healthcare systems and practices, enriching their medical knowledge and enhancing their adaptability. Living and studying in a foreign country cultivates independence, resilience, and cross-cultural communication skills – all essential qualities in today's interconnected world. The cultural immersion and friendships forged during this period are invaluable, enriching students' personal and professional lives.

-Mr. Kadwin Pillai, Director of Transworld Educare and Chairman of Kings International Medical Academy

Gateway to Global Opportunities

For aspiring doctors aiming to practice in North America, success in the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a critical milestone. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must excel in these exams to secure residency positions and eventually practice in the US. Compared to other destinations like Kyrgyzstan, Russia, the Philippines stands out as a strategic choice for IMGs due to its exceptional track record in USMLE success, all the while being a low cost alternative.

Philippine medical schools consistently achieve impressive USMLE pass rates, frequently exceeding the global average. Recent years have seen pass rates for Step 1, Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge), and Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills) exams surpassing 90% in several institutions. Such outstanding performance underscores the efficacy of Philippine medical education in preparing students for rigorous licensing examinations. Furthermore, graduates benefit from a robust network of residency programs in the US that actively seek their expertise, reflecting confidence in the quality of education and clinical training provided by Philippine medical schools.

Challenges and Support Systems

Despite the numerous advantages, students may encounter challenges such as cultural adaptation, language barriers, and homesickness. However, many foreign universities offer robust support systems, including language training, counseling services, and peer mentoring programs to help international students adjust and thrive. Prospective students should carefully research and select institutions that provide such support to ensure a smooth transition and a successful educational journey.

The Philippine Advantage

Among the top destinations for medical education, the Philippines stands out due to its affordability, quality, and curriculum aligned with US standards. Additionally, the Philippines boasts a strong network of residency programs in the US that actively recruit graduates from its medical schools, making it an attractive option for students aspiring to practice in North America. The Philippines is revolutionising medical education by offering affordable, value-for-money learning options at a fraction of the cost seen in major countries like the United States and Canada. With annual tuition fees ranging from $2,000 to $5,000, it provides an economically feasible choice for ambitious professionals worldwide.

In conclusion, foreign medical education presents a viable alternative for students facing intense competition and high costs in their home countries. Despite challenges, the benefits of affordable education, quality training, and global opportunities make it an appealing option. Countries like the Philippines, Georgia and many others are leading the way by providing robust medical education that aligns with international standards and supports students' aspirations to practice globally. As the world becomes more interconnected, the trend of pursuing medical education abroad is likely to continue growing, offering students transformative experiences that prepare them to meet the challenges of the medical profession with competence and confidence.

 Quote-

"The Philippines is transforming medical education by offering affordable and high-quality learning options. With tuition fees ranging from $2,000 to $5,000 annually, it provides a realistic pathway for ambitious professionals worldwide. The country's robust curriculum, aligned with international standards, prepares students for global practice, supported by strong USMLE performance and coveted residency placements in the US. This makes Philippine medical schools an excellent choice for those seeking comprehensive training, cultural enrichment, and a pathway to fulfilling careers in medicine on a global scale."

IRGMA Calls for Ban on Non-Compliant Imported Gloves to Enhance Safety In Hospitals And Healthcare Sector

The Indian Rubber Gloves Manufacturers Association (IRGMA) in its latest bid to mitigate safety and health risks of medicos has sought directives through communications to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change to ban the import of chlorinated gloves and has also notified the Customs (Imports) Department of the violation of bio-waste disposal rules by importers especially of the phased out chlorinated gloves, and non-compliance of gloves manufacturers sending chlorinated gloves to India, some making way into India spuriously. IRGMA is seeking the use of only BIS Approved Gloves, through GEM, for Government Hospitals, conforming to the consideration and implementation of QCO (Quality Control Order) aligned with MDR 2017 Compliance of CDSCO Gazette Notification which was to come into effect from 1st Oct 2022.

In their communications to the aforesaid authorities, IRGMA has brought to notice that the Central Pollution Control Board had issued a letter to phase out the use of chlorinated gloves by 27th March 2019; that West Bengal State Pollution Control Board has issued directives to ban the use of chlorinated gloves and that CPCB has issued directive not to allow imports in violation of guidelines that ban chlorinated gloves.

In yet another communication to the Malaysian Rubber Council, IRGMA has specified that chlorinated gloves of all kinds are not allowed by the Indian authorities owing to violation of the guidelines, and that they do not require test to be validated in the view of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of India, and Biomedical Waste Rules 2016.

In their communication to AIIMS, IRGMA has issued a disclaimer to ensure that the healthcare industry procures the right quality of Disposal, Latex and Nitrile gloves to comply with the expected standards and rules prevalent.

The continuation of spurious import of examination gloves has serious safety and health risks. Many countries (US and Europe) have already banned the use of powdered, coated Nitrile Gloves, in their respective countries. The procurement of BIS Approved Gloves is very convenient because there are already many BIS certified companies manufacturing the gloves, and these companies are capable of supplying the quality product to the Hospital Staff.

Speaking about the directives on chlorinated gloves, Mr Sunil Patwari (President – IRGMA) said, “It is time that these spurious imports and usage of chlorinated gloves be curbed as it is detrimental to the health of both the healthcare providers and the patients, and for their safety the Government and the authorities must make firm implementations that impede the spurious circulation and import of chlorinated gloves.”

Mr Konda Anindith Reddy (Managing Director – Wadi Surgicals Enliva Gloves) added, “We need to ensure that we are providing the right quality gloves to the medical practitioners for the safety of them and the patients as well. This kind of trust will come only if there is a stringent regulation on the spurious circulation and import of chlorinated gloves.”

Medicos working in acute medical care units are at maximum risk of contracting infection with defective gloves. Even patients are equally at risk of contracting cross-infections if exposed to any open areas from a torn surgical glove worn by medical staff.

In order to implement the ban on noncompliant gloves and their spurious circulation, IRGMA has identified the urgent need and therefore requesting the for the FINALISATION OF QCO, through Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers; DIRECTING CDSCO to IMPLEMENTATIN of RULE 2 of CHAPTER 7; DIRECTING CDSCO, to ban the import of spurious/ loose gloves AND import of Chlorinated Gloves; DIRECTING the Govt Hospitals to procure only BIS approved Nitrile Gloves. IRGMA has urged the Govt to immediately consider that poor quality surgical gloves in hospitals need a check which is possible through FINALISATION OF QCO in compliance to CDSCO Gazette Notification (Rule 7 of Chapter 2).
