Digital Hub To Contribute To Volvo’s Growing Digital Needs Globally

* This adds to assembly line for all cars at Hoskote, Bengaluru & National Parts Warehouse at Bhiwandi, Mumbai

Volvo Cars India has come a long way since it first started selling cars in India in 2007. The last five years has seen Volvo grow the luxury mobility segment as well as invest in customer satisfaction and its own ecosystem.

The company’s Digital Technology Hub that recently moved to a bigger office space in Bengaluru will be 240 strong in a years’ time, leading to further strengthening the Company’s commitment to the Indian market and of its presence on digital platforms of the automotive industry. The India Tech Hub is an integrated part of the global delivery setup of digital solutions and services for Volvo Car Group. The hub aims at leveraging Indian IT talent with the goal of contributing to the ever-growing digital needs of the company’s cars as it progresses towards becoming an all-electric company by 2030. The Digital Hub is designed to promote a flexible style of working while encouraging collaboration & innovation.  It can host up to 500 colleagues working in a hybrid work model.

The Digital Hub at Bengaluru will boost Volvo Car’s capabilities in software engineering, data science and analytics, product management, online business, user experience and in all its customer offerings in the future. The Digital Hub assumes significance as software will play an enhanced role in cars of the future. The India Hub would be a full-fledged delivery organisation that, in partnership with partners, would be an important component of Volvo Cars' overall strategy and digital objectives.

“Digital technology plays an important part in Volvo offerings, and this is further going to increase as mobility technology advances. The digital hub will play an important role in catering to these needs. With this hub we have leveraged local talent re-enforcing Volvo Cars as an attractive and inclusive employer. I am confident that the Digital Technology Hub will play an important role in the development of the future generation of Volvo cars.” said Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director, Volvo Car India.

“Volvo recognizes the vast pool of talent in the country and our Digital Technology Hub leverages the best available, we expect this to be 240 strong in a year’s time. While this hub strengthens our presence in India with the opening of new office space in Bengaluru, it will also contribute to the ever-growing digital needs of Volvo globally more so as Volvo readies itself to showcase and launch cars of the future that have digital technology as their integral part” said Jonas Olsson, Head, Digital Technology Hub.

To ease the inventory pressure on dealers and the wait time for customers, the company, in 2018 opened its National Parts Warehouse (NPW), in Bhiwandi, on the outskirts of Mumbai. Presently stocking nearly 90% of the spares that could possibly be required, this warehouse has reduced the wait time for customers.

Volvo’s plan is to launch one electric car in India each year, beginning with the XC40 Recharge, a full-electric SUV, introduced in July this year. The transition to full electrification is being accompanied by an increased emphasis on online sales and a more comprehensive, compelling, and transparent consumer offer. Customers can now purchase a car from the comfort of their own homes thanks to this digital solution, which is backed up by the dealership's comprehensive sales procedure.

USC Viterbi School of Engineering Dean Yannis Yortsos Marks Post-Pandemic Return To India With High-Level Delegation Meetings

* School leadership reaffirms commitment to cultivate innovation in India alongside business leaders, alumni, and prospective students

Yannis C. Yortsos, Dean of the Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC) today completed a three-day trade and academic mission to India – his first since before the pandemic in 2019. Dean Yortsos led officials from the highly-ranked private engineering school to restore the annual tradition to meet in-person with the school’s India Advisory Board, a combination of renowned Indian business leaders, as well as connect with prestigious alumni and prospective students. In addition, the school held its annual joint lecture series with Indian accelerator Axilor Ventures to cultivate innovation among startups and future entrepreneurs.

With more than 13,000 international students currently enrolled, USC ranks as one of the very top universities in the United States in attracting international students. In particular, students from India number 2,590 (20% of international total) and have grown a remarkable 31.5% since the Fall 2019 pre-pandemic figure. Most notably, the Viterbi School of Engineering comprises almost 2,000 Indian nationals, the greatest concentration of Indian students on the university’s diverse campus.

The delegation from the USC Viterbi School of Engineering included Dean Yortsos, Vice Dean for Global Academic Initiatives, Dr. Cauligi “Raghu” Raghavendra, and Senior Associate Dean for Admission & Student Engagement, Kelly Goulis.

About his return to India, Dean Yortsos said, “I am thrilled to come back to collaborate in person with our Indian friends and colleagues in innovation. We look forward to continuing our alliance with leading scholars, engineering educators and researchers to take on the world’s biggest challenges, which are bigger than one country, one university or one person. As we have all learned in recent years, issues related to health and sustainability know no borders, and we must face them together.”

Solving the world’s grand challenges has been a passion for Dean Yortsos, who co-developed the Grand Challenge Scholars Program (GCSP) to re-imagine 21st century engineers. In May 2022, Dean Yortsos received the U.S. National Academy of Engineering’s Gordon Prize, the nation’s most celebrated award for engineering education, for his role in co-creating the program.

Another major achievement recently announced by Dean Yortsos while visiting Mumbai and Bengaluru was the $35 million gift to name the Alfred E. Mann Department of Biomedical Engineering, one of the largest such naming gifts for an individual biomedical engineering department in U.S. history. The gift will allow the department to spearhead advancements across the integration of engineering and medicine, and feature bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. programs that will appeal to Indian students. This announcement from November 2022 follows the school’s groundbreaking of the Dr. Allen and Charlotte Ginsburg Human-Centered Computation Building, which is planned to open in 2024.

These milestones and more to come were shared by Dean Yortsos to the USC Viterbi School of Engineering India Advisory Board, whose members read like a who’s who of Indian powerbrokers, including:

·  Srinath Batni (Chair), Director and Co-founder, Axilor Ventures Pvt. Ltd.

Beyond meeting with the USC Viterbi India Advisory Board and USC alumni and families, known as the “Trojan Family,” USC Viterbi co-hosted with Axilor Ventures its annual lecture series. The event is a showcase and open dialogue in which scholars, innovators and entrepreneurs from India and the United States gather to share new advances in science, technology and engineering, and push ideas forward. Dr. Ananth Krishnan, Executive Vice President and CTO, TCS, spoke on the topic of “Building Greater Futures with Innovation and Collective Knowledge,” while Kalyan Sivasailam, Co-founder and CEO, 5C Network, discussed AI in healthcare.

Dr. P. Vijay Kumar, Honorary Professor, ECE Department, IISc, USC Viterbi alumnus and emeritus professor at USC Viterbi School of Engineering, discussed his involvement in designing the spreading code for NaviC’s L1 Signal. 68% Of Youth Want Financial Stability Before Tying The Knot, Says Betterhalf Survey

~ 76% of young Indians still dream of a traditional but self-funded wedding ~

~ 54% prefer taking a wedding loan ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh ~

~ Following the pandemic, millennials, and millennials prefer small-scale, intimate weddings ~

In findings from a recent nationwide survey on wedding spending, 68% of the youth reported that financial stability was a top priority when it came to marriage and achieving other personal goals. The survey also revealed that self-funded weddings were becoming the next big trend, with over 70% of Millennials and Gen Z saying they would plan and finance their own wedding.

The survey was conducted jointly by IndiaLends, an online marketplace for loans and credit cards, and Betterhalf, an AI-based matrimonial website, in 24 Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities across the country. Over 2100 respondents participated in the post-pandemic wedding survey belonging to the 21-35 age group, comprising 93% salaried and 5% self-employed.

Interestingly, the results from the survey show how Millennials and Gen Z from both the salaried and non-salaried groups are shifting towards wedding financing options such as wedding loans. Some 54% of the respondents said they would opt for mid-size loans of Rs 1–5 lakh; about 40% of the youth are willing to invest up to Rs 10 lakh on wedding and related expenses; and 35% don’t mind spending Rs 5–10 lakh. Significantly, 57% of the participants said they would consider digital-lending platforms over traditional banks for wedding loans.

Small-scale, intimate weddings, rather than large, fat Indian weddings, have become the preferred choice for young couples in the post-pandemic era. The reduction in the guest list to only family and close friends allows couples to focus on creating a one-of-a-kind premium experience, splurging on personalisation, fancy locations, and multiple ceremonies. To ease the financial pressure on families, the youth are taking charge of most of it but not all the expenses, depending on their savings, and also arranging additional funds from trusted lending sources. This allows them to pay for the pre- and post-wedding ceremonies, including venue and catering, photo shoot and videography, and even the honeymoon.

In the above context, the survey reveals that 53% of Millennials prefer a micro wedding with under 100 guests, followed by 31% choosing a mini wedding with 100–250 guests, and only 16% opting for a grand ceremony with 250+ guests. Theme and destination weddings are on trend, but the interesting fact that comes out of the survey is that, over 76% of the respondents from Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities want a traditional wedding.

IndiaLends Founder and CEO Gaurav Chopra said, "Tradition and culture have always been an intrinsic part of India and Indian families, as evident from our wedding-spend survey, which shows how the youth of today still want to celebrate their big day with family and close friends in traditional style with pomp and splendour, yet keeping it intimate. At the same time, it is heartening to see that a majority of the respondents in the 21–35 age bracket are focusing on financial stability before they decide to tie the knot and settle down. To me, this is a reflection of their core values, as they do not wish to impose a financial burden on their families. Going forward, financing a wedding will become an important component of online lending platforms, thus giving the youth the financial freedom to own their dream wedding.

Betterhalf co-founder & CEO Pawan Gupta said, "It was a pleasure to work with IndiaLends on our combined wedding-spending survey, which threw up many interesting facts about how the youth perceive a wedding. Any wedding ceremony, big or small, involves careful decision-making, planning, budgeting, and execution. I am glad to see that millennials are not just aware of what a wedding entails, but they are also willing to take financial responsibility for the nuptials. Our survey findings also indicate that the youth still dream of having a traditional, albeit self-funded, wedding. This will pave the way for new financial products and services tailored to wedding needs."

IndiaLends is currently working with more than 60 RBI-approved partners, which include major PSUs and private sector banks, NBFCs, fintechs, and P2P lenders. The company also offers an open-API model for banks and NBFCs to partner with them through a plug-and-play approach. The company has more than 13 million customers, with over 85% of them being Millennials and Zillennials. The company achieved its cash breakeven in March 2022.

Air India Commits Over US$400m To Fully Refurbish Existing Widebody Aircraft Cabin Interiors

·         Completely new, latest-generation seats and inflight entertainment system to be installed in all cabin classes

·         Premium Economy cabin to be introduced

·         Regulatory and Engineering process has already commenced

Air India, India’s leading airline and a Star Alliance member, has announced plans to refurbish its entire legacy wide body fleet, comprising 27 Boeing B787-8 and 13 B777 aircraft, committing over US$400m for the project.

This refurbishment will see a complete overhaul of existing cabin interiors, including the addition of latest generation seats and best in-class inflight entertainment across all classes. In addition, the refurbishment will see the introduction of a Premium Economy cabin on both fleets. The First Class cabin will also be retained on the 777s. Air India has engaged leading London-based product design companies, JPA Design and Trendworks, to assist with the cabin interior design elements of this refurbishment programme. The collaboration brings together two experts in the fields of aviation and interiors that have produced designs for major brands including Taj Hotels, The Orient Express and Herman Miller International.

With this significant investment, Air India is committed to providing its passengers with a comfortable, modern, and technologically advanced cabin to facilitate travel experience that is comparable with the best airlines in the world.

The complete interior refurbishment entails significant regulatory and engineering preparation, which commenced earlier this year. This lengthy but necessary process, and the time required to manufacture seats, is expected to lead to the first aircraft entering service in mid-2024.

Commenting on the widebody cabin refurbishment programme, Mr. Campbell Wilson, MD & CEO, Air India said, "Under our Vihaan.AI transformation program, Air India has committed to attain the highest standards of product and service befitting of a world class airline. We know that, at present, the cabin product on our 40 legacy widebody aircraft falls short of this standard.  Although the project commenced some months ago, we are delighted to now publicly announce this significant investment on a complete interior refit, and we are confident that, when revealed, the new interiors will delight customers and show Air India in a new light.  We are working closely with partners to accelerate the refit process as fast as possible and, in the meantime, leasing in at least 11 new widebody aircraft with brand new interiors to improve our offering at the earliest opportunity.”
