Convert Co-Opportunity to Co-Creation to Give and Get More

The Business Roundtable and Davos both have stated the purpose of a company is to create value, not just shareholder wealth creation. Perhaps we should expand this to co-creation of value which makes more sense than just consume and dispose. Co-creation of value is implied in the Business Round Table and Davos’ New Purpose of a Company. The world has changed and sustainability is important and so we have to co-create more with our stakeholders such as employees, customers, and even competition, who in a skewed way is a stakeholder. They have an interest in our business just as we have in them.

Customer centric customer value creation is important and requires a relationship. Hence we should promote relationship through co-creation.

How many times have you missed an opportunity because you did not have the resources to take advantage of it? Resources could mean money, it could mean skills, it could mean reach etc. Thus when a friend wanted to buy a farm property in Delhi, he could barely afford the minimum 2 acres required by law. He came across an 11 acre parcel at a great price. He went to 3 other friends, and made them partners in buying the whole parcel. This was a co-opportunity which became a value co-creation opportunity when the friends actually divided the parcel into 4 pieces.

Co-creation of babies is a natural example where two different people are needed. Shared resources are becoming common, like cloud storage, using rail tracks belonging to another company to run your trains. Or sharing a teacher in a class room to co-create learning. Or sharing knowledge.

Sharing, community thinking, co-creation are natural activities. Yet, in most corporate situations where winning, driving market share and profits become the goal, we forget these natural activities, and tend to go alone, go solo.

Competition is viewed as the enemy. Build defensive and offensive strategies to beat them.

Customers are often viewed as the adversary, (message often seems to be take advantage of them).

Remember, co-opportunity should lead to co-creation and conversely, co-creation should lead to co-opportunity.

In this new thinking competition are friends, they are enablers, and they are helpers.

Customers are friends, they need us, and we need them.

To do this, a mind-set change to Value creation is necessary for the CXOs, the employees, and must be communicated to customers. In a sense we need to build a co-creation community, and we need to do everything to build or better still co-create a community. What are our needs, what are the needs of the community and our competitors? What are the shared and emotional connects we have and what are the end results we seek? Can we share a joint passion, such as sustainability? Such as uniting for charitable purposes (in India on CSR, Corporate Social Responsibility).

Internally our strategy should be very clear on co-creation and co-opportunity creation. This should translate into a purpose we want to portray to our people, our customers, our partners and our competitors, and if need be the government. We should keep our focus on the members of the community, reminding them on the purpose and the need to co-create, the co- opportunities and the end results.

Then we look at this as a project with a start (the members and the purpose) and an end, which is co-creation improving the well-being of the members (which is value creation) and ourselves. Our decisions are to be driven deliberately by the strategy, the purpose and achieving the greater good of all through co-creation.

We must empower and involve members and the community with tools, with a culture of co-creation and partnership. We must find shared interests.

What improves a co-opportunity and co-creation program is a sense of belonging and fulfilment. Am I getting something worthwhile out of this? Can I connect to my customers and my competitors without making them antagonists, but by making them partners, working towards a common and shared good (or value). Examples include App Developers for Apple or Microsoft, people who go on a co-driving experience, people who build an association with members of typically competing companies, and customers and companies. Companies often buy raw materials from their competitors. Today, many companies share R&D programs. There are many examples. Apple, MS, Amazon all creates competitive advantage through co-creation.

But we forget these in the heat of our wanting to win and not think of win-win. If you are not doing this, maybe you will think differently after this.

ExxonMobil, IndianOil and Chart Industries to Pioneer Virtual Pipeline Initiative

Highlights

* Leading companies innovating with virtual pipelines to accelerate gas access in India
* Focus on designing rapidly scalable mobile infrastructure for deployment
* Strong potential to stimulate localized manufacturing of essential equipment

ExxonMobil India LNG Limited has signed a Letter of Cooperation with Indian Oil Corporation Limited and Chart Energy & Chemicals, Inc., to establish a system of transportation infrastructure to expand gas access in India. Virtual pipeline systems deliver liquefied natural gas by road, rail and waterways to areas not connected by physical pipelines.

This Letter of Cooperation brings together ExxonMobil, IndianOil, India’s largest state-owned oil refining and marketing company, and Chart, a leading global manufacturer of LNG equipment for use throughout the liquid gas supply chain. The parties will implement a gas infrastructure initiative that leverages LNG ISO intermodal containers to move gas as a reliable, cleaner and cost-effective fuel.

The initiative seeks to develop a pilot project and create a roadmap for mobile gas infrastructure expansion at scale, improving access to an abundant and cleaner fuel source.

“India is ready for the benefits of natural gas now,” said Alex Volkov, Chairman, ExxonMobil LNG Market Development Inc. “By linking our global expertise with other leading players, we can create strong and reliable pathways for gas to move quickly and efficiently to where it is needed.”

As a major LNG supplier, ExxonMobil has been working closely with IndianOil to explore innovative supply-chain solutions for enhancing India’s gas access. Chart’s collaboration will accelerate this progress and create new opportunities for localized manufacturing of essential equipment, leveraging Chart’s main India facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

“We believe this collaboration with ExxonMobil and IndianOil will accelerate India’s ability to offer cleaner energy within its growing cities,” said Jillian Evanko, Chief Executive Officer, Chart Industries, Inc. “We are excited to combine our international experience and local presence in Sri City to design the winning formula alongside two great collaborators.”

Abbott Launches New Four-Ftrain Flu Vaccine for Wide Protection Against Influenza

Abbott, the global healthcare company, recently launched a new inactivated quadrivalent vaccine for influenza, the first of its kind sub-unit vaccine offering protection against four virus strains, in India. It is the only 0.5 ml quadrivalent flu vaccine in India that has been approved for use in children below 3 years. In fact, it can be given to children from 6 months onwards, and to adults. A 0.5 ml vaccine could improve the immune response in children below 3 years.

A globally approved product, Abbott’s vaccine offers wide protection by immunizing against four different flu virus strains simultaneously. Hence, it is called a quadrivalent or tetravalent vaccine. It includes a second B-strain of influenza virus, compared to one B-strain included in trivalent vaccines. Recommending a vaccine can be complex for the health authorities. This is because there may be a mismatch in the vaccine strain and the circulating viral strain. Therefore, the inclusion of an additional B-strain in quadrivalent vaccines can help broaden protection.

As per a recently published study on this vaccine globally, in children, quadrivalent vaccines demonstrated superior immunogenicity or immune response compared with the alternate- lineage B-strains in trivalent vaccines, with comparable safety.

This is the first 3rd generation, quadrivalent sub-unit flu vaccine in India. A sub-unit vaccine is the most advanced flu vaccine. The benefit of a sub-unit vaccine is that it undergoes a further step of purification as compared to split vaccines, and thus is more refined. This may lead to lesser side-effects. In clinical studies conducted globally across high-risk groups including children, the elderly, pregnant women, asthmatics and diabetics, sub-unit vaccines have shown better tolerability and a favourable safety profile compared to other flu vaccine types.”

An inactivated influenza vaccine is beneficial in high risk populations, since it can be given to a larger set of people, such as pregnant women, children below 2 years, older adults and immunocompromised patients.

Dr. Srirupa Das, Medical Director, Abbott India said, “We are excited with the launch of the quadrivalent version of our flu vaccine, which can be offered to both children above 6 months and adults.  This particular type of vaccine provides good immune response with less side-effects. This is yet another significant step in Abbott’s endeavor to protect as many people as possible against the flu. As part of its “Mothers Against Influenza” (MAI) campaign, which recognizes the potentially serious consequences that influenza can have, Abbott is raising awareness among people on the importance of protecting families against influenza so that they may live healthier, fuller lives.”

A respiratory infection that affects all ages, influenza is distinct from the common cold. An influenza infection typically results in high fever lasting for 3 to 4 days, including symptoms such as headache, myalgia or muscle pain, exhaustion and severe chest discomfort and cough. Moreover, influenza can cause serious complications in certain groups such as those with respiratory ailments, cardiac disease and diabetes, as well as young children and the elderly. Influenza A and B, the two viruses that cause human disease, are currently circulating globally and in India causing seasonal outbreaks. The disease burden of influenza is substantial, and B viruses have been estimated to be associated with 25% of all influenza related mortality.

Children are particularly vulnerable to influenza. One India study estimates over 16 million influenza cases occurred in 2016 in under-5-year-old patients, accounting for 10.9 million outpatient visits and 109,000 hospitalizations. Despite the proven benefits of influenza vaccination in children as well as adults and the elderly, immunization rates across all vaccine preventable diseases remain low.

Dr. Bhaskar Shenoy, Head Department of Pediatrics & Chief, Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore and Life Member, Infectious Disease Chapter, Indian Academy of Pediatrics said, “The National Center of Disease Control estimates show that influenza reported cases have increased 5-fold in India from 5,044 in 2012 to 28798 in 2019. And in Karnataka, influenza reported cases have increased almost 60% per annum from 122 in 2013 to 2,030 reported cases in India.

Manchester City and XYLEM Tackle Water and Education Issues in Bangalore with Fan Volunteers

Five Manchester City fans from across India were given an exciting volunteering opportunity to team up with the Club’s Official Water Technology Partner, Xylem, to increase access to safe water for primary schools in Bangalore. Despite being one of the world’s fastest growing cities, many of Bangalore’s 12.3 million residents still do not have access to clean drinking water and are at risk of contracting water-borne diseases.

As part of ‘Water Goals’, a project supported by Manchester City and Xylem Watermark, the fans worked with Xylem and their local partner Planet Water Foundation to install new clean water filtration towers in two new schools. The schools were also fitted with an AquaSan latrine sanitisation system, to sanitise school toilets, accessible to hundreds of schoolchildren. Club legend Paul Dickov was also involved in the trip, joining the fans to complete the builds.

Since January 2019, Water Goals has trained 100 Young Leaders and reached over 5000 participants and young people in 26 locations, with support from local partner Magic Bus.

The City fans also joined up with young leaders from the Cityzens Giving project to find out how they use football to educate young people about the importance of water sanitation and hygiene. This trips marks the second annual volunteering opportunity for City fans building on the first installation of two Xylem water towers in 2019 which now provide access to clean water for up to 1800 people each day.

Paul Dickov, Manchester City legend, said: “I was honoured to join this year’s volunteering trip alongside our partner, Xylem, and our amazing fan volunteers. To see first-hand the difference being made in these communities, and to be able to contribute to the building of the water towers, was an incredible experience.”

Tom Pitchon, Director of City Football Foundation, said: “We are inspired by the impact of this second fan volunteering trip in Bangalore, bringing together Xylem’s expertise in clean water with the passion of City fans across India to make a difference in local communities. This, coupled with the long-term impact of our existing Cityzens Giving project in Bangalore, continues to demonstrate that football can truly help tackle social issues around the world.”

Joe Vesey, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Xylem, said: “Many of Bangalore’s more than 12.3 million residents do not have access to clean drinking water and are at risk of contracting water-borne diseases. This affects their health and can also impact their education.

“Our business and our mission are all about bringing the best technology to bear on solving the world’s most challenging water issues. It’s so rewarding to do that in partnership with Manchester City fans, through Cityzens Giving we’re bringing safe water and sanitation to thousands of students across Bangalore. This will have a huge impact on their health, on their education, and on their futures. “

Konica Minolta Consolidates its Position as an Environmentally-Sustainable Organization

Highlights

* Wins the prestigious Grand Prix award at the inaugural Nikkei SDGs Management Grand Prix
* The brand has already implemented a collection drive to help its India customers comply with the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, and achieve their sustainability objectives

In keeping with its vision for a sustainable future, Konica Minolta ensures that its solutions are aimed at tackling deep-rooted problems that have a direct impact on society and the world at large. With this broad outlook, the company identifies pressing problems within its purview to implement ethical business practices that raise awareness and drive positive change at the grassroots level.

Each of Konica Minolta’s products and policies is designed to reduce energy consumption and paper wastage. The production process for its proprietary polymerised toner technology, Simitri HDE, reduces the carbon footprint and sulphurous/nitrous emissions and consumes minimal energy.

Konica Minolta also engages in Green Supplier Activities, linked to its Green Factory Activities. Under the initiative, environmental experts from Konica Minolta visit supplier production sites to evaluate existing setups and propose suggestions for improving processes/workflows, as well as outlining cost reduction benefits, investment rationale, etc. They also provide assistance to suppliers to implement the relevant measures, thus helping them simultaneously reduce both the environmental impact and their operating costs.

For such consistent efforts, Konica Minolta Inc. has recently received the prestigious Grand Prix award at the first Nikkei SDGs Management Grand Prix. The platform recognizes businesses that are actively addressing environmental, societal, and economic challenges, and taking this a step further by integrating SDGs in their corporate practices to enhance corporate values. The assessment was made based on the company’s responses to the Nikkei SDGs Management Survey with questionnaires in four categories, viz. SDGs strategy and economic value, social value, environmental value and governance. Konica Minolta was rated highly across all four categories after a comprehensive evaluation of the initiatives it has implemented at multiple levels.

In line with the latest achievement, the company is now working towards furthering its vision and efforts towards achieving the SDGs by creating new values and developing solutions in association with its customers in India. As an ethical and environmentally conscious organization, Konica Minolta India has been compliant with the norms and guidelines mandated under the E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016, by the Government of India. The brand has also initiated a collection drive to enable its production printing customers to achieve the same compliance with the rules pertaining to e-waste. To facilitate this, it is conducting a collection of empty toner bottles and used/defective spare parts from customers. The drive began on January 15th, 2020, and is being carried out in all metro cities to create an avenue for customers to do their part for the larger mission to build a greener, more sustainable future.
