For India’s top tech firms seeking to grow revenues from Europe in order to offset lower spend by American clients, it’s going to be Key facts on India's IT industry
a long, arduous journey, said research firm Forrester on Wednesday.
The US, which accounts for over half of India’s $60-billion software outsourcing industry, has traditionally been the top market for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and Wipro, among many others. However, over the past few years, Indian tech firms have been trying to mitigate their high American exposure by focusing on Europe’s $14-billion market for software and back-office services.
“You cannot replicate the US model in other markets. Unlike the US, European customers are not thinking primarily about costs. If Indian companies follow the same model for another 2-3 years, they will struggle,” said Sudin Apte, principal analyst of Forrester Research. Mr Apte, who surveyed around 400 European customers in order to understand their outsourcing priorities, said India’s tech firms will need to go beyond just hiring local workforce for sales and delivery efforts, if they really want to become successful in Europe.
“Offshoring in North America is a standard business decision, however in continental Europe, it’s a religious decision,” said Mr Apte, quoting one of the customers surveyed for his study.
Indeed, for almost a decade, the UK has been the top market for Indian companies with customers such as British Petroleum (BP) and British Telecom (BT) outsourcing projects to TCS, Infosys and Wipro. However, the UK, which outsources around $9 billion worth of projects to India every year, does not reflect the entire Europe.
“The United Kingdom is very similar to the US, unlike continental Europe where language and cultural barriers exist,” added Mr Apte.
Many European customers are more comfortable working with delivery teams in neighbouring countries, instead of signing large offshore contracts. “For example, Romania’s historical ties with Bulgaria, Italy, Greece, and Germany makes it easy to connect with clients in these locations,” Mr Apte added.
However, mature outsourcers such as BT, BP and ABN Amro have had no such bottlenecks, while deciding to work with large Indian offshore services providers such as TCS, Infosys and Wipro.
“For globalised European customers, outsourcing is not a new phenomenon, but for many companies, especially those who are pan-European only, outsourcing and offshoring is not such as hot thing,” he added.
Compared with Forrester’s survey in 2008, the current research shows a drop of more than 20% in the number of companies that were thinking about starting an offshore initiative for the first time. “This means that in the next 12 months, we will see few first-time offshore users sending their work to locations like India,” said Mr Apte.
The Forrester research also found that multinational firms such as IBM and Accenture are better positioned that the Indian IT vendors when it comes to serving customers in continental Europe.
“Accenture has more staff serving continental Europe customers than anybody else - it’s not about pure offshoring anymore,” he said. For instance, Accenture serves more than 300 customers from Germany with a few hundred staffs making use of the managed services model, which allows the company to serve more with less.

iGate expands Whitefield campus; To hire 1,500 by 2010
iGate on Thursday inaugurated the fourth phase of its global delivery facility at its campus in Whitefield, Bangalore. The new facility, set up at a cost of Rs 65 crore, provides 115,000 sq ft of additional workspace and can seat 1,050 people.
Phaneesh Murthy, CEO of the outsourcing solutions company, said iGate plans to hire about 1,500 people in 2010. The $220-million company currently has around 3,500 employees in Bangalore.
Murthy said he expected IT budgets to be up 2-4% in 2010.
“Discretionary project spends are starting to happen. The pricing environment is largely stable,” he said.
iGate’s campus has in the past sought to differentiate itself through the adoption of a host of environment friendly measures. The latest phase makes further advances on this front. It has LED lighting throughout and the lighting is solar powered. There’s an ozone-friendly air conditioning system, organic waste converter and a wastewater recycling system.
“We also made special efforts to procure green IT equipment,” the company said. The company has taken on a carbon footprint estimation study to determine the green house gas (GHG) inventory across all its global delivery facilities in India, Australia and Mexico.

Does TCS plan to hire 25,000 jobs globally?
In a move that could bring a smile to many faces, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced that it will hire 25,000 people globally in 2009, with 90 percent of them in India alone. Though the number is bigger when compared to the hiring these days, it is less than last year when TCS appointed around 35,000 people.
With this recruitment drive, TCS also plans to expand its presence into the tier-II cities in India. "We will be hiring 25,000 people this year, which means roughly 25 lakh square feet of work space required and, therefore, we need to grow outside the metros. Tier-II cities are our only focus for expansion in the country as the top rung are clogged and saturated," said Tanmoy Chakrabarty, Vice-President and Head of Government Industry Solutions unit at TCS.
Following this hiring spree, the total global manpower of TCS would go up to more than 1.8 lakh. This will put the IT services provider among large private Indian employers like Tata Steel, which has the total employee strength of two lakh. Going forward, the company, which has an estimated 32 percent market share, plans to cash in on the Indian government's plan to invest Rs. 40,000 crore on IT services.
Currently, 70 percent of the IT segment's revenue is from India, while the rest comes from the U.S., Latin America, Africa and South East Asian countries. However, the revenue contribution from Indian government businesses to the total company revenue of $6 billion is less than five percent, which the company intends to increase to more than 10 percent in the next three years.

Microsoft to hire Yahoo staff for the online search business
Microsoft Corp will hire at least 400 workers from Yahoo Inc if government regulators approve the companies' proposed Internet search partnership, and Yahoo will receive $150 million to cover any unexpected costs during the switch to new technology.
The details emerged in a regulatory filing that elaborated on an agreement announced last week. Sunnyvale-based Yahoo said then that an unspecified number of its 13,000 employees would be offered jobs at Microsoft after the Redmond, Washington-based software maker assumes control of the search results and search advertising on Yahoo's Web site.
The transition is supposed to begin early next year, assuming the alliance is approved by antitrust regulators in the United States and Europe.
Microsoft will pay $50 million annually during the first three years of the 10-year contract to supplement the revenue that Yahoo will receive from the ads appearing alongside its search results. The $150 million in guaranteed payments weren't mentioned last week.
The filing said Yahoo can use the $150 million to pay for unforeseen transition costs. Yahoo's stock has fallen by about 15 per cent since it unveiled the Microsoft deal, largely because announced terms didn't include a large upfront payment.
The disclosure probably won't ease the disappointment much, given analysts had anticipated Microsoft paying $1 billion to $2 billion for access to Yahoo's search engine.
Most of the revenue from the Microsoft deal will flow from ad commissions. Yahoo will receive 88 percent of the search ad revenue during the first five years of the contract. After that, Yahoo's commission will range from 83 percent to 93 percent, depending on whether it still handles some of the ad sales in the partnership.
The main reason Yahoo decided to turn over its search engine to Microsoft was to save money. If Yahoo wants to save even more on technology, it
has the option of adopting Microsoft's online mapping service replace of its own, according to the filing.
Yahoo Chief Executive Carol Bartz has already made it known she isn't impressed with Yahoo's online maps. As it is, transferring 400 workers to Microsoft would prune Yahoo's current payroll by about 3 per cent.
Yahoo will lay off some workers if the Microsoft deal goes through, Bartz said last week. Tuesday's filing didn't provide any layoff projections. Although it also has been jettisoning workers because of the recession, Microsoft finished its latest fiscal year end in June with 93,000 employees -- an increase of about 2,000 people from the previous year.
Microsoft is counting on the Yahoo partnership to help it reverse years of losses in its online operations and siphon some traffic -- and ad sales -- from Internet search leader Google Inc.
Yahoo's search engine is the second largest, making it the quickest way for Microsoft to gain ground on Google. Even so, Microsoft and Yahoo combined have less than 30 percent of the US search market compared to 65 percent for Google, according to comScore Inc.
To keep Yahoo happy, Microsoft will have to produce ad revenue per search that is within a certain percentage of Google's industry-leading rate. If Microsoft doesn't hit the target, Yahoo can abandon the partnership before the contract expires.
The filing didn't specify how close Microsoft has to come to Google's revenue per search. Microsoft estimates that Google gets 7 cents in ad revenue for every search, while Yahoo gets 4.3 cents and Microsoft gets 3.9 cents, according to a PowerPoint slide Microsoft mistakenly posted online.

Is Wal-Mart set to hire over 22,000 people in US?
Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores will hire over 22,000 people this year, a move that will bring cheer to the country’s strained labour market grappling with rising unemployment woes. The retailer, which is one of the least unscathed entities amid the financial turmoil, would be recruiting people for its new and expanded stores nationwide. Wal-Mart has said it would “create more than 22,000 jobs in 2009 to staff new or expanded stores in the US”.
The company would be taking people for positions including store management, pharmacists, human resource managers, customer service associates, cashiers and sales associates. In a statement on Thursday, the retailer said it would create over 1,000 jobs in several individual states. Wal-Mart would generate nearly “1,300 jobs in Arizona; 1,000 jobs in California; 1,300 jobs in Florida; 1,500 jobs in Michigan; 1,200 jobs in New Jersey; 1,000 jobs in South Carolina; 1,200 jobs in Utah and 1,100 in Virginia,” it said.
Last october, Wal-Mart announced plans to open 142 to 157 new or expanded stores in the US. Eduardo Castro-Wright, who is vicechairman of Wal-Mart said the firm is proud to create quality jobs for thousands of Americans during this tough economic time.
“Job creation is just one way in which we’re working hard every day to help people across this country live better,” Castro-Wright noted.
Wal-Mart along with Indian business group Bharti opened their first store in India last week. The joint venture between Bharti Enterprises and Wal-Mart Stores Inc was inked in 2007.
Rattled by the raging economic crisis, the US has seen massive job losses in recent months and the official unemployment rate is well above 9%.
The jobless rate has been on the rise as companies have resorted to trimming their workforce as part of cost-cutting measures. US Federal Reserve chairman Ben S Bernanke on Wednesday said more number of jobs could be lost in the next few months. Wal-Mart has presence in many countries and employs more than 2.1 million associates worldwide.

Wipro, HCL unlikely to make any campus offers this fiscal
To save on the cost of training, one of the leading domestic software exporter HCL Technologies said it will hire people 'just in time' of requirement rather than maintaining a bench.
HCL has been following the policy of just in time hiring, which has paid off well for the organisation, HCL Technologies CEO Vineet Nayyar said.
Declining to give a hiring outlook for the year ahead, Nayyar said the firm is unlikely to make campus offers.
"We have hardly made any campus offers... we have moved to the lateral strategy," he added.
Similarly, Suresh Senapaty, CFO of Wipro Ltd said the company will not hold any campus interviews this fiscal but will honour all the commitments made to 7000 fresh graduates last fiscal.
The overall global headcount of the company fell by 992, to 54,026, from December to March. However, the company clarified that it has not laid off any employee.
During the quarter the company has made a gross addition of 2,298 employees. In the BPO services segment, however, the headcount has came down to 11,426 from 12,750 in December.
Commenting on the BPO business, he said the company is trying to move away from voice-based services to platform-based services. So, it is unlikely that the company would make new recruitments for voice-based services.

Infosys to cut variable pay compenent
Infosys has cut the variable pay for employees, with the cuts being deeper at the higher levels. For senior executives, the variable pay, which constitutes nearly 50 per cent of their total compensation, has been slashed by 58 per cent.
“Some boardroom executives have even taken a 70 per cent to 85 per cent variable pay cut,” said T V Mohandas Pai, head of HR in Infosys. The company's hiring has been steadily declining.
In Q4, it added (net) only 1,772 people, compared to 2,772 in Q3, and 2,586 in Q4 of 2007-08. In the whole of 2008-09, it hired (net) 13,663 people, down from 18,946 in the year before.
The company maintained that it will not seek to trim its payroll by laying off software professionals. There will, however, be no salary hike this year, as the company plans to keep its operational costs under control.
“We are not laying off anybody and there are no such plans,” said Infosys Technologies HR-director, TV Mohandas Pai.
Infosys plans to hire 18,000 professionals in the current fiscal, including almost 16,000 fresh graduates and experienced hires. It will also recruit around 1,000 non-Indians outside the country to increase the number of foreign professionals in its workforce.

StanChart to hire 2,000 professionals in 2009, says Official
Global Banking giant, Standard Chartered on Sunday said it has no plans to freeze hiring in India despite the challenging market conditions and would recruit around 2,000 professionals this year.
StanChart had recruited 4,000 people in the last calendar year but has decided to scale down fresh recruitments in the face of financial downturn that has hit its operations globally, StanChart Human Resources Regional Head Madhavi Lall told the media here.
"We have not stopped hiring. Although, the number of new recruits may be lower in 2009 as compared to last year, the bank plans to recruit 1,500-2,000 people in the current calendar year," Lall said.
The lender already recruited 110 people in the last two months while it plans to hire 28 more people by July to strengthen its various business divisions, Lall said.
"These 28 people will be joining us from IIMs. The bank will go ahead with its hiring plans in the months ahead, which will include campus recruitments," Lall said.
Presently, StanChart has a staff strength of 19,000 in India as against its global headcount of 75,000, Lall said.

Is Wipro set to hire 8,000 freshers?
Is the country's third-largest IT company bucking the hiring trend? Yes, so says the website ITexaminer.
According to a report on the site, Wipro is making around 8,000 campus offers this fiscal year. In an email sent to all freshers seeking jobs in areas such as technical support and offshoring, the IT major has invited applications for 15,000 seats, says the report.
In the mail, the company's corporate vice president for human resources, says that nearly 14,000 offers were made last year, with the students expected to join by the end of this fiscal. He emphasised that there has been no delay in new recruits joining the company, and that those who received offers this year are expected to join the firm within the next fiscal year.
Incidentally, for the first time ever, Wipro in its Q3 report, showed a drop in its employee headcount in the IT services business by about 1,100 as compared to the earlier quarter.
The company went down by 1,092 software engineers and 226 BPO employees during the quarter. Wipro had 96,965 employees as of December 31, 2008, which includes 75,385 employees in IT business unit and 21,578 employees in the BPO unit.
In the JAS quarter, the company had 97,552 employees as of September 30, 2008. Though volumes have grown year-on-year (y-o-y), the number of employees has remained stagnant at year-ago levels.

TCS on a hiring spree; To hire 15,000 employees
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said on Friday that the company expects to add 15,000-18,000 people to its headcount over the next 12 months, compared with nearly 8,700 in the three months to December. TCS currently has about 144,500 staff.
However, CEO S Ramadorai said in an interview that the company expects to slow its rate of hiring new staff this year, as a broad economic downturn affects its global clientele.
Ramadorai said some contracts and projects were being delayed or cancelled, but the company expected to achieve some earnings growth in 2009 despite the worsening global economic outlook.
"We are confident of some growth, but what that amount is difficult to say," he said. "Yes, we are winning some contracts, but then there are delays in the decision making on a number of contracts," he said, adding there were hold-ups in implementing deals that had already been signed as well as several project cancellations.
"The slowdown is very obvious and very visible, and we think it will continue for the foreseeable future."
TCS, part of India's Tata Group, posted a lower-than-expected 1.6 per cent rise in October-December net profit on January 15.

Indian companies to hire 2,50,000 in next few months
There is a good news for job seekers, with the companies planning to hire more than 2,50,000 new employees over the next months -- making the new year a welcome change from the gloom of 2008 in the job market.
While the proposed over 2.5 lakh hiring is mostly for the financial services industry, the industry experts believe that the overall job market scenario is also set for a recovery in the second half of the year.
Topping the list of the companies planning to hire big include public sector banking giants like State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank as well as insurance firms such as Anil Ambani group's Reliance Life, SBI Life, Metlife, Max New York Life.
Even some BPOs and healthcare firms like ACS and Accentia are planning to hire thousands of people in the coming days.
The proposed hirings include more than one lakh of full- time employees and about 1.5 lakh in the part-time positions with the insurance companies
.
Among other sectors, manufacturing and export-oriented businesses are, however, likely to continue to witness some pressure in the next few months, after huge job losses seen during 2008.
HR consultancy major Hewitt Associates believes that sectors like insurance, telecom (where new licensees are entering), infrastructure and Special Economic Zones may look for fresh hirings in 2009, being the major beneficiaries of the government's stimulus plans.
However, the hiring outlook remains uncertain for sectors like real estate, textile and retail sectors, it believes.
Another global HR consultancy Mercer believes that hiring plans by the companies would depend on their business prospects in the coming year.
Among the major companies planning to hire big time, SBI is planning to recruit 25,000 employees by March. Besides, its life insurance venture, SBI Life, is looking to hire 13,000 agents and 200 sales managers.
Besides, the country's second largest public sector lender PNB and Union Bank are also hiring 5,000 people each, while Indian Overseas Bank, South Indian Bank and IDBI Bank are bringing on board 1,000, 12,000 and 650 employees, respectively.
Among life insurance firms, Reliance Life is hiring 90,000 agents and 2,500 managers, Metlife has announced plans to hire 30,000 agents and 2,000 managers and Max New York Life is recruiting 30,000 agents and 14,000 managers.
Among other sectors, BPO major ACS is hiring 1,000 employees, while health care solutions provider Accentia plans to add 5,000 staff to its payrolls.
" Exponential growth had resulted in a culture where mediocrity flourished. 2009 is an opportunity for companies to bring the performance orientation back into how they manage their human capital," Mercer India Information Product Solution business leader Gangapriya Chakraverti said.
Global HR consultancy major Manpower believes that hiring outlook for the first quarter of 2009 was the weakest since 2005.
Expressing similar views, leading job portal Naukri.com's owner InfoEdge India CFO Ambarish Raghuvanshi told the media that hiring was going to be slow in the first quarter of 2009 as recruitment trends are impacted by the slowdown in economic growth and decline in business confidence in the country.
He, however, added that some improvement was likely in the second half of calendar year 2009.

Yahoo to sack 1,500 workforce in high-cost markets; while hire in India
Yahoo Inc will tell 1,500 employees on Wednesday they are losing their jobs, after announcing in October that layoffs would occur by year's end, a person familiar with the situation said on Tuesday.
The expected date of the announcement and some details were reported this week by All Things Digital, a blog covering Silicon Valley. The layoffs will hit hardest in the labor-intensive areas of human resources and finance.
The blog had speculated the layoffs would affect more than 1,500 people, or about 10 percent of Yahoo's workforce, and the source said the number has not changed.
Chief Financial Officer Blake Jorgensen said in October Yahoo would be prepared to cut jobs and other expenses further in 2009 if the economy continued to deteriorate.
Yahoo will cut its workforce in high-cost markets and hire aggressively in lower-cost locales such as Eastern Europe, India and Southeast Asia, the company has said.
The highest-profile personnel change has not yet occurred. Chief Executive Jerry Yang said in November he would leave the company, after facing strong criticism for his leadership. That change will take effect when a replacement is named.
