Kumar Mangalam Birla Becomes Doctor Of Science (Economics) At University Of London Foundation Day
Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla is one of five distinguished honorands to receive an Honorary Degree from the University of London. Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Sir Terry Waite, Susannah Schofield MBE and The Reverend Philip Goff are also being honoured.
Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla is Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, a century-old leading Indian multinational and the first Indian business house to venture overseas. Today, it spans 41 countries across six continents, with revenues of ~$67 billion and a market capitalisation exceeding $110 billion.
A sixth-generation scion of the storied Birla family, his great-grandfather, G.D. Birla, was a confidant of Mahatma Gandhi and played a vital role in India’s freedom movement. A passionate champion of education, Mr. Birla serves as Chancellor of BITS Pilani and has chaired IIM Ahmedabad and IIT Delhi. He is also a Governing Board member at London Business School, where he endowed a £15 million scholarship, among the largest in Europe.
Mr Birla becomes Doctor of Science (Economics).
The awards were presented by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Chancellor of the University of London, during the University’s Foundation Day celebrations held at Senate House, London on Wednesday 19 November.
Receiving honorary degrees and fellowships at Foundation Day were:
· Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group – Doctor of Science (Economics).
· Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Professor of Economic History and Vice-Chancellor at the University of the West Indies - Doctor of Science (Social Sciences).
· Sir Terry Waite KCMG CBE, an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall Cambridge and the patron of many charities working for humanitarian causes – Doctor of Science (Social Sciences).
· Mrs Susannah Schofield MBE, who established up the John Schofield Trust in memory of her husband, a journalist killed in action in Croatia - Doctor of Literature.
· The Reverend Philip Goff, expert on academic dress - Honorary Fellowship.
Kavita Reddi, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the University of London, said: "We are delighted to honour Mr Birla with an Honorary Degree in recognition of his outstanding contributions to industry and philanthropy. His social initiatives have improved millions of lives, and his commitment to widening access to quality education, both in India and here in the UK, reflects the University of London's core values - a passion for helping others, recognising the value of education and a desire to unite, rather than divide.
“Each of our distinguished honorands share these values and have made remarkable achievements in their varied and respective fields. It is a privilege to recognise them all as part of our Foundation Day celebrations."
Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group, said, “I am deeply humbled to receive this distinction from the University of London. It is a particular privilege to accept a storied honour presented by Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, The Princess Royal. As an alumnus of the London business school, I have witnessed first-hand the university’s remarkable ability to transform ambition into achievement. My family has long believed that education is the most enduring engine of progress, capable of widening opportunity and reshaping communities. To be recognised by an institution that embodies those values and continues to equip new generations to take on an unpredictable world is both moving and motivating.”
Each year the University of London celebrates Foundation Day, a landmark date of the annual calendar marking the institution’s first royal charter, granted by William IV on 28 November 1836. The ceremony centres on the conferment of honorary degrees and fellowships, a tradition that began in 1903 with recipients including the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King George V and Queen Mary).
Foundation Day 2025 was attended by students and staff of the University of London, representatives from its 17 Federation Member institutions and its global network of Regional Teaching Centres, and people with long-standing connections with the University.

The Golf Foundation Launches India’s Largest Talent Hunt; Targets Children From Economically Weaker Sections
Announcing the Talent Hunt programme, Amit Luthra, Founder-President of TGF, Asian Games Gold Medallist and Arjuna Awardee, said: “The National Talent Hunt is where many champions begin their journey. With the support of our partners, we can ensure that no child with talent — whether from golf or any other sport — is denied the chance to excel.”
This year’s edition is being headed by leading golf coach and President of the PGA of India, Romit Bose, who brings decades of coaching expertise and a proven track record of producing multiple professional tournament winners, Amateur National Champions, and Junior European and World Champions.
Built on the philosophy that talent is everywhere, opportunity is not, TGF has spent over 25 years discovering and shaping champions from underprivileged backgrounds. Alumni such as Ashok Kumar, Rashid Khan, Shubham Jaglan, Honey Baisoya, Chikkarangappa, and Hitaashi Bakshi, among others, have risen from modest beginnings to compete on global tours including the Indian Tour, Asian Development Tour, Asian Tour, European Tour, PGA Tour of Americas, Women’s Indian Tour, Women’s Asian Golf Tour and Ladies European Tour. TGF’s impact has been recognised with the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar for sports promotion conferred by the Hon’ble President of India.
This year, TGF is conducting on-range Talent Identification Camps at golf facilities across India. Flyers and invitations have been shared with EWS children, government and low-income schools, NGOs, and clubs within TGF’s network, inviting them to a dedicated assessment day. Academies from various sports such as cricket, hockey, tennis, and football will also be approached.
Multiple teams of trained scouts will travel across states conducting in-school talent identification camps. Using portable hitting mats, nets, putting mats, and balls, scouts will conduct a series of athletic and golf-specific tests such as ball throws, 40-metre sprints, static jumps, and movement assessments. The programme is open to children from any sport, recognising that athletic qualities gained in football, cricket, athletics, hockey, or kabaddi often translate exceptionally well into golf.
“This year’s Talent Hunt is designed to cast the widest and deepest net we’ve ever attempted. India is full of natural athletes who just need a gateway into golf — and we intend to find them. State of the art technologies like Trackman are being used to gauge the performances, ruling out any favouritism,” said Romit Bose.
Across range and school programmes, TGF aims to screen 1,500–1,800 children. Shortlisted candidates will join twice-a-week training sessions at regional golf facilities until the first week of January 2026, before the final selection round. The 30 plus shortlisted finalists will enter TGF’s long-term pathway where ₹ 3.5 lakhs to ₹ 5 lakhs allocated per kid per annum from an overall yearly budget of approximately ₹ 2 crores in order to receive structured coaching, equipment, tournament exposure, mentoring, and financial support, setting them on the road to becoming competitive golfers.

From music and cultural performances to traditional games and senior-led stalls, the festival is designed to spark laughter, nostalgia and heartfelt connections. It encourages seniors to reconnect with old friends, make new ones and enjoy moments that celebrate simplicity, joy and community belonging.
Sharing their thoughts on the occasion here is what they opine: “Community and social engagement are vital for cognitive health,” said Kris Gopalakrishnan, Chairperson of Vayah Vikas. “Decades of brain research show that mentally stimulating social environments play a significant role in maintaining cognitive resilience as individuals age.”
Dr. Devi Shetty, Chairman of Narayana Health and founding member of Vayah Vikas, added, “Awareness and preventive health are essential for seniors to enjoy not just a longer life but a healthier and more independent one. Early detection and regular monitoring can transform outcomes for older adults.”
Building Intergenerational Bonds
A hallmark of Hiriyara Habba is its strong emphasis on intergenerational engagement. Families, youth volunteers, students and community organisations participate alongside seniors, fostering shared learning, empathy and respect. The festival reinforces that the well-being of elders flourishes when families and communities walk the journey together.
Hiriyara Habba 2025 promises to be a vibrant gathering that honours the spirit of aging with dignity, creativity and community. All are invited to join in celebrating the elders who continue to enrich society with their wisdom, experiences and warmth.

Bollywood Superstars Shah Rukh Khan And Salman Khan Attend Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi’s VIP Opening
Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, the latest addition to the Saadiyat Cultural District, marked its much-anticipated grand opening with an exclusive VIP preview on Thursday evening, bringing together global talent, cultural leaders and special guests for a first look inside the region’s newest landmark.
Ahead of the official public opening on 22 November 2025 in Abu Dhabi, Bollywood superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan were spotted exploring the museum and enjoying an exclusive first look at its collections and dynamic exhibits. The actors experienced the immersive displays that bring natural history to life and encountered key highlights such as 67-million-year-old “Stan”, one of the best-preserved examples of a fossilised T. rex skeleton ever discovered.
The VIP opening also welcomed an exciting lineup of international celebrities from across film, television, music, art, and culture. Leading the red carpet were Abu Dhabi resident and global TV icon Steve Harvey; acclaimed special-effects designer and MythBusters star Adam Savage; and rising Hollywood talents David Iacono and Audrina Miranda, stars of the recent Jurassic World movie. Joining them were award-winning producer and entrepreneur Swizz Beatz; celebrated actors Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Sons of Anarchy) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian); Tunisian-Italian model and cultural icon Afef Jnifen; and a host of other distinguished guests.
Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, the largest institution of its kind in the Middle East, has a special focus on the natural history of the Emirates and the wider region. Galleries take visitors back in time to seven million years ago, when the Arabian climate was very different, giving life to a green and lush savannah-like landscape roamed by now-extinct animals, including a giant elephant with four tusks, which is also on display for visitors to discover.
The galleries feature extraordinary exhibits which bring nature’s greatest stories to life, including awe-inspiring glimpses into the age of dinosaurs. The world’s first-ever display of a sauropod dinosaur herd can be found in the museum’s atrium, with five different species of these long-necked giants standing majestically to greet visitors as they enter. Deeper into the galleries, another world-first awaits: a display featuring Tyrannosaurus rexes locked in battle over the carcass of a Triceratops, which is the first time two fossil T. rexes have been exhibited in such a dynamic scene.
Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi joins a growing community of world-class institutions on Saadiyat Island, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, and the upcoming Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Together, these institutions define the Saadiyat Cultural District as a global destination for culture, creativity, and cross-disciplinary exchange, a place where art, science, and heritage are brought together to shape future generations.

Meghalaya Concludes Another Grand Cherry Blossom Festival, Marks A New High For India’s Concert Economy & Cultural Tourism Landscape
~ A moving tribute to late icon Zubeen Garg unites thousands in an emotional finale ~
Meghalaya’s iconic Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2025, the centrepiece of the State’s autumn cultural calendar and one of India’s most visually spectacular festivals, concluded with overwhelming public participation, star-powered performances, and an impressive showcase of the region’s cultural and creative dynamism. Over two days, thousands of visitors from across India and abroad gathered in Shillong to experience a celebration that blended global superstars with deep-rooted local artistry, reaffirming Meghalaya’s arrival on the national stage as a prime destination for music tourism, cultural experiences, and nature-led travel.
The festival was inaugurated by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Conrad K. Sangma, who articulated the State’s long-term vision to build Cherry Blossom Festival into one of the most defining cultural celebrations in India. Addressing the packed Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, he said, “This is one of the biggest festivals in the entire country. With your help, we will make it the biggest and the best and that is the target that we have. Festivals like these are truly important for our tourism sector. We’ll be working much harder in the future to ensure that our tourists get even better experience.” His remarks set the tone for a festival that not only dazzled audiences but also showcased Meghalaya’s larger strategy of nurturing a strong concert economy backed by local talent, global collaborations and community participation.
Nora Fatehi, The Script, Jason Derulo, Aqua and Diplo Light Up India’s Autumn Capital
Day 1 began with a surge of energy as Nora Fatehi took over the stage with her signature performance style, bringing her electrifying flair to the festival’s opening night. The atmosphere rose to a new high when Irish rock icons The Script delivered their chart-topping hits, moving seamlessly from the anthemic “Superheroes” to an emotional moment where frontman Danny O’Donoghue performed with a fan onstage. As the night progressed, international pop sensation Jason Derulo, accompanied by Les Twins, transformed the stadium into a massive wave of music and light through synced LED wristbands that made the audience part of the spectacle. Day 2 continued the momentum as Danish pop legends Aqua turned the venue into a vibrant dance party with infectious nostalgia, setting the stage for a grand closing performance by three-time Grammy winner Diplo, who powered Shillong into an ecstatic finale with his signature global electronic sound.
An Emotional Chorus for Zubeen Garg Resonates Across the Stadium
One of the festival’s most powerful moments came during the moving tribute to the late icon Zubeen Garg, whose legacy continues to define the musical spirit of the Northeast. The performance of “Mayabini” by Zublee Baruah, Prabin Borah, Priyanka Bharali and Arupjyoti Baruah brought the entire stadium together in a shared moment of remembrance, with thousands singing in unison. The tribute stood out not only for its emotional weight but also for symbolising how deeply Meghalaya’s festivals are intertwined with the cultural heartbeat of the region and the enduring contributions of artists who shaped its musical identity.
Beyond the main arena, Shillong came alive with multiple cultural experiences that added depth to the festival. A key highlight was the Japan Arena at the iconic Ward’s Lake, which returned for the second year as an immersive celebration of Japanese culture. As Japan’s Sakura traditions found a natural autumn parallel in Meghalaya’s landscape, the arena hosted Sumi-e and Shodo demonstrations, origami workshops, cosplay theatre, anime-led language sessions by the Japan Foundation, discussions on creative economy and visual storytelling, culinary showcases by Chef Santosh, and musical performances by Meghalaya-born artist Amo Daring. Visitors experienced a rare cultural convergence that reinforced the festival’s international appeal and Meghalaya’s evolving global collaborations.
The festival also mirrored the success of the CM Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP), a pioneering model that nurtures local artists, provides structured pathways for growth, and unites emerging regional musicians with global icons on the same stage. Over the years, the Cherry Blossom Festival has welcomed artists such as Akon, Clean Bandit, Ne-Yo, Boney M, and this year’s roster added Jason Derulo, Tyga, Aqua and Diplo to its growing list. By creating a strong concert economy supported by tourism, talent development and world-class event infrastructure, Meghalaya continues to position itself as one of India’s most innovative cultural destinations.
This year’s festival also arrived at a time when Meghalaya’s tourism sector is experiencing remarkable growth. With more than 1.6 million visitors recorded in FY 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic figures, and tourism contributing 7.7 percent to the State’s Gross Value Added, Meghalaya is rapidly gaining national attention as a nature-driven and culture-rich destination. The government’s commitment to sustainable tourism through the CM Homestay Mission, the Prime Tourism Vehicle Scheme, the Tourist Buddies programme and the multilingual OneConnect helpline has made travel more accessible, community-led and visitor-friendly. With over 300 tourist sites, more than a thousand waterfalls, India’s cleanest river at Dawki, the world’s longest sandstone cave, and living root bridges found nowhere else in the world, Meghalaya continues to strengthen its identity as the leading eco-tourism destination of the Northeast.
As the final beats faded and the cherry blossom–draped city returned to its natural rhythm, the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2025 stood out not only as a two-day celebration of music and culture but as a defining statement of Meghalaya’s ambition to become a global cultural hub. From world-renowned performers to heartfelt local tributes, and from international cultural exchanges to the vibrancy of its tourism offerings, the festival reaffirmed Meghalaya’s place at the forefront of India’s cultural and tourism map, inspiring travellers, music lovers and storytellers across the country.

Uber and Sulabh International Team Upto Improve Sanitation Access For Drivers In Bengaluru
Uber, India’s leading ridesharing platform, and Sulabh International, a pioneer in sanitation and social reform, have come together on World Toilet Day to provide free access to clean and safe public toilets, promoting hygiene and comfort for Uber drivers.
The partnership will enable Uber drivers to use Sulabh operated public toilets free of charge across nine cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad. The initiative is aimed at improving hygiene and wellbeing for those who spend long hours on the road, reinforcing both organizations’ shared commitment to dignity, inclusion and public health, while supporting the broader objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Uber drivers can avail this benefit by presenting their Uber registration ID on the driver app at Sulabh operated facilities. All locations are maintained by Sulabh to ensure cleanliness, regular upkeep, and the availability of essential sanitation supplies. Recognizing the unique needs of women drivers, 50 Sulabh toilet complexes will also be equipped with sanitary pad vending machines and incinerators, enabling access to free sanitary products and proper waste disposal.
Commenting on the partnership, Amit Deshpande, Head, City Operations, Uber India and South Asia, said, “For drivers who spend much of their day on the road, access to clean and safe sanitation is a basic yet critical need. Our collaboration with Sulabh International reflects Uber’s continued effort to improve everyday work conditions for drivers, while contributing to the Swachh Bharat Mission.”
Kumar Dilip, President, Sulabh International, said, “We appreciate Uber’s effort to prioritise the dignity and comfort of drivers on its platform. Sulabh has always worked to make sanitation accessible and inclusive, and through this initiative, we are extending these essential facilities to millions of drivers on the Uber platform across key cities. This collaboration supports better hygiene, greater convenience, and contributes to a healthier, more dignified workforce.”
This partnership highlights the power of collective action between technology and social innovation by bringing together Uber’s reach and Sulabh’s expertise to make access to sanitation a basic right, not a privilege, for those who keep India moving.

Amazon India To Create 25 Food Gardens In Schools, Further Investing In Nutrition Support For Children In Karnataka
Amazon India today announced a new collaboration with ICLEI South Asia to establish 25 urban food gardens in schools in Karnataka by 2027, expanding its nutrition initiatives that have already supported 250,000 school children across the state. This new program builds on Amazon's ongoing investments in nutrition and will address food security, drive digital inclusion, operational excellence, and sustainability — directly improving the lives of underprivileged children.
Through the collaboration, Amazon contributed $1 million through its Right Now Climate Fund to ICLEI South Asia to establish 75 urban food gardens by 2028 in schools across Bangalore, Delhi, and Kolkata. These gardens provide students with hands-on experience growing fresh vegetables while learning about sustainability. Early pilots in Bangalore show strong student participation, with 10-12 vegetable varieties already distributed to students over four months. The program will expand to an additional 16 schools in the next six months.
Amazon's nutrition initiatives in Karnataka also include its long-standing collaboration with Akshaya Patra Foundation. Since supporting Karnataka's Ksheera Bhagya milk programme in 2017—which benefited 170,000 children in Bengaluru government schools—the collaboration has evolved to address broader nutrition and education needs. In 2024, Amazon launched Project Aasha, enabling employees to share its expertise in supply chain and logistics to enhance Akshaya Patra's operational capabilities. Amazon employees nationwide have also supported the preparation and distribution of nearly 450,000 nutritious mid-day meals across India in 2025.
"From funding milk programs to building creative ways for children to understand nutrition, our programs and initiatives have continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of children and communities," said Abhinav Singh, VP Operations, Amazon India and Australia. "Together with Akshaya Patra and ICLEI, we are creating lasting impact that goes beyond food to education on nutrition and sustainability in the formative years of a student’s life."
Dr. Monalisa Sen, Associate Director at ICLEI South Asia added, "Urban gardens are more than nutrition; they cultivate sustainability awareness and empower students to grow their own future."
Mr. Shridhar Venkat, CEO of The Akshaya Patra Foundation said, "Amazon has been a transformative partner since 2017, evolving from the Ksheera Bhagya programme to encompass digital education and operational excellence through Project Aasha. We are grateful for their continued support as we work towards ensuring no child in India is deprived of education because of hunger."
The Right Now Climate Fund (RNCF) is Amazon’s $100 million global commitment to restore ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and help communities where Amazon operates. Since its launch in India in 2023, RNCF has allocated $3.28M for the country as part of its $15M commitment to Asia-Pacific. Through RNCF, Amazon is collaborating with the Centre for Wildlife Studies' Wild Carbon project in the UNESCO-listed Western Ghats to support 10,000 farming households, planting one million trees, thereby reducing human-wildlife conflict while creating sustainable income opportunities. Additionally, Amazon is investing $1.2 million to restore Mumbai's Thane Creek ecosystem by planting 400,000 mangroves and removing 150 tons of plastic waste from the city's waterways, protecting a critical Asian flyway for hundreds of bird species. This initiative protects critical habitats for Mumbai's flamingos while creating employment for local women.

First India Urges Ministry Of Finance For Clarity On GST Applicability To Logistics And Local Delivery Services
The amendments following the 56th GST Council Meeting were intended to streamline transportation services taxation, the subsequent notifications have inadvertently created considerable confusion among ecosystem participants. Of particular concern is the impact on e-commerce operators, logistics service providers, and thousands of MSME sellers who form the backbone of India's digital retail infrastructure.
This lack of clarity has triggered operational and compliance challenges across the logistics value chain. Businesses are unclear on who bears the primary liability to pay tax – the e-commerce platform, the logistics partner, or the seller, and face inconsistencies in documentation and invoicing. The risk of double taxation looms large, particularly in cases where a shipment involves both interstate and local movement, handled by different service providers. The small logistic service providers are grappling with different model of large ecommerce players. Inconsistencies in interpretation have led to varying approaches among major e-commerce players, with Flipkart claiming GTA exemption while other significant platforms like Meesho are not availing this benefit, as they believe they do not qualify under the exemption category.
Sushma Morthania, Director General, FIRST India said, “The GST Council’s move to streamline compliance and plug loopholes is well-intentioned, but the lack of operational clarity on what qualifies as a ‘local delivery service’ has led to widespread confusion. E-commerce logistics is the backbone of MSME participation in India’s digital economy. A timely clarification will help ensure uniform compliance, protect small sellers from unintended tax burdens, and safeguard business continuity for thousands of logistics partners and digital retailers.”
In this regard, FIRST India has sought clarifications from the Ministry on the following:
The geographical and operational definition of “local delivery services” and its distinction from GTA and courier services;
The applicability of the existing B2C exemption for GTA services under Notification No. 12/2017 when goods are delivered directly to consumers;
The treatment of intra-state GTA services facilitated through e-commerce platforms; and
Whether ancillary services such as cash-on-delivery handling or product verification at delivery points are to be treated as part of GTA services or separately taxable activities.
FIRST India emphasizes that a definitive clarification from the Ministry is crucial to ensure industry-wide compliance and fair competition. The organization stresses that clear guidance on whether Flipkart's approach of claiming GTA exemption or the stance taken by other major players like Meesho is correct would be invaluable. Such clarity would enable FIRST India's members to serve the nation in accordance with the true spirit of the law, preventing any potential misinterpretation of well-intentioned regulations. This would not only foster a level playing field but also help businesses avoid inadvertent non-compliance due to ambiguous interpretations of the amended GST provisions.
