Does TCS plan to hire 25,000 jobs globally?

In a move that could bring a smile to many faces, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced that it will hire 25,000 people globally in 2009, with 90 percent of them in India alone. Though the number is bigger when compared to the hiring these days, it is less than last year when TCS appointed around 35,000 people.

With this recruitment drive, TCS also plans to expand its presence into the tier-II cities in India. "We will be hiring 25,000 people this year, which means roughly 25 lakh square feet of work space required and, therefore, we need to grow outside the metros. Tier-II cities are our only focus for expansion in the country as the top rung are clogged and saturated," said Tanmoy Chakrabarty, Vice-President and Head of Government Industry Solutions unit at TCS.

Following this hiring spree, the total global manpower of TCS would go up to more than 1.8 lakh. This will put the IT services provider among large private Indian employers like Tata Steel, which has the total employee strength of two lakh. Going forward, the company, which has an estimated 32 percent market share, plans to cash in on the Indian government's plan to invest Rs. 40,000 crore on IT services.

Currently, 70 percent of the IT segment's revenue is from India, while the rest comes from the U.S., Latin America, Africa and South East Asian countries. However, the revenue contribution from Indian government businesses to the total company revenue of $6 billion is less than five percent, which the company intends to increase to more than 10 percent in the next three years.

Sun Microsystems begins laying off 6,000 across all ranks

Sun had earlier last year announced a series of changes designed to align its cost model with the global economy and accelerate the introduction of compelling open source innovations. As part of that effort Sun announced a global workforce reduction of approximately 5,000 to 6,000 employees, representing approximately 15% to 18% of the Company’s global workforce. Sun can confirm that today layoff notifications were given to approximately 1,300 employees as part of that action. Reductions were made across all levels, including vice presidents and directors.

Sun continues to make choices to align strategically, geographically and operationally with its plan for long term growth. We believe the restructuring will result in a more efficient coverage model with resources aligned to growth opportunities. We believe the number of positions that will be eliminated, when combined with the other cost cutting measures and organizational changes being implemented, will put the Company on track for improved financial performance.

Last November, Sun Microsystems said it would be laying off up to 6,000 employees — or around 18 percent of its workforce — after a weak first quarter performance. The cuts are happening today, we’re hearing from a well-placed source, ahead of the company’s second-quarter earnings report next Tuesday.

The server and software company is facing hard times as the market has shifted from closed-source to open-source software technologies, like Linux, and it is facing stiff competition from larger rivals like IBM and HP. To boot, a significant portion of the company’s business is in the financial sector — clients that aren’t in a position to make large purchases these days. Sun has been experimenting with software-as-a-service and other models to help it gain market share, and most prominently purchased open-source database company for MySQL for $1 billion last year. Here’s some more from the strategy announcement it released in November:

As part of this effort, Sun is announcing a global workforce reduction and alignment of its Software organization into new business groups - Application Platform Software, Systems Platforms, and Cloud Computing & Developer Platforms - with a focus on boosting open source momentum and growing new sectors of the market who view technology as a competitive weapon.

Indian companies to hire 2,50,000 in next few months

There is a good news for job seekers, with the companies planning to hire more than 2,50,000 new employees over the next months -- making the new year a welcome change from the gloom of 2008 in the job market.

While the proposed over 2.5 lakh hiring is mostly for the financial services industry, the industry experts believe that the overall job market scenario is also set for a recovery in the second half of the year.

Topping the list of the companies planning to hire big include public sector banking giants like State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank as well as insurance firms such as Anil Ambani group's Reliance Life, SBI Life, Metlife, Max New York Life.

Even some BPOs and healthcare firms like ACS and Accentia are planning to hire thousands of people in the coming days.

The proposed hirings include more than one lakh of full- time employees and about 1.5 lakh in the part-time positions with the insurance companies
.

Among other sectors, manufacturing and export-oriented businesses are, however, likely to continue to witness some pressure in the next few months, after huge job losses seen during 2008.

HR consultancy major Hewitt Associates believes that sectors like insurance, telecom (where new licensees are entering), infrastructure and Special Economic Zones may look for fresh hirings in 2009, being the major beneficiaries of the government's stimulus plans.

However, the hiring outlook remains uncertain for sectors like real estate, textile and retail sectors, it believes.

Another global HR consultancy Mercer believes that hiring plans by the companies would depend on their business prospects in the coming year.

Among the major companies planning to hire big time, SBI is planning to recruit 25,000 employees by March. Besides, its life insurance venture, SBI Life, is looking to hire 13,000 agents and 200 sales managers.

Besides, the country's second largest public sector lender PNB and Union Bank are also hiring 5,000 people each, while Indian Overseas Bank, South Indian Bank and IDBI Bank are bringing on board 1,000, 12,000 and 650 employees, respectively.

Among life insurance firms, Reliance Life is hiring 90,000 agents and 2,500 managers, Metlife has announced plans to hire 30,000 agents and 2,000 managers and Max New York Life is recruiting 30,000 agents and 14,000 managers.

Among other sectors, BPO major ACS is hiring 1,000 employees, while health care solutions provider Accentia plans to add 5,000 staff to its payrolls.

" Exponential growth had resulted in a culture where mediocrity flourished. 2009 is an opportunity for companies to bring the performance orientation back into how they manage their human capital," Mercer India Information Product Solution business leader Gangapriya Chakraverti said.

Global HR consultancy major Manpower believes that hiring outlook for the first quarter of 2009 was the weakest since 2005.

Expressing similar views, leading job portal Naukri.com's owner InfoEdge India CFO Ambarish Raghuvanshi told the media that hiring was going to be slow in the first quarter of 2009 as recruitment trends are impacted by the slowdown in economic growth and decline in business confidence in the country.

He, however, added that some improvement was likely in the second half of calendar year 2009.

Qualcomm to launch Rs 10,000 laptop

San Diego-based wireless communications major Qualcomm will introduce its small laptop, Kayak, primarily used for accessing Internet services, in India priced at Rs 10,000 in the second half of next year.

"We will introduce Kayak Internet access platform in second half of next year and this device leverages 3G chipsets as well. The main USP is it can compute in low power scenario like India. It will cost about Rs 10, 000," Qualcomm Senior Vice-President and India head Kanwalinder Singh told reporters.

In Kayak prototype Qualcomm has designed a device capable of bringing the Internet over cell phone data networks to areas that may lack wired Internet service from cable and telephone providers.

The US-based firm, pioneer of CDMA technology, has already launched Kayak PC alternative globally.

Kayak is a reference design for building low-cost wireless-computing devices designed to fill the niche that exists between desktop PCs, which require landlines or separate accessories for connectivity and Internet-capable wireless devices.

Kayak uses Qualcomm's dual-core mobile station modem chipsets to provide both computing and connectivity, he said.

"We see developing markets like India seeking connectivity as inevitable and believe that concepts such as Kayak that leverage 3G wireless will be a key to success in helping these areas join the global online community, Singh added.

Qualcomm is pushing its phone processors into PC territories such as desktop computers after adding computing features like e-mail and web browsing onto cell phones.

Alcatel-Lucent to cut 1,000 jobs; To reduce 5,000 contractors

Telecom major Alcatel-Lucent will cut 1,000 managerial posts and remove 5,000 contractors as part of its costs-saving initiatives.

"The company expects to reduce the number of managers by approximately 1,000 and the number of contractors by approximately 5,000," it said in a statement today.

"It will also complete its existing restructuring initiatives as well as seek savings in real estate, support functions and discretionary spending".

Hong Kong to create 250K jobs through infra projects

Hong Kong's government aims to create 250,000 jobs by launching 10 big infrastructure projects in 2009, its financial secretary said on Saturday, in an effort to slow the growing jobless rate in an economic downturn.

"(The) Hong Kong SAR government will facilitate the launch of 10 major infrastructure projects next year, hoping to bring in 250,000 jobs," John Tsang said in a radio programme, adding he had urged all government departments to propose ways of creating more jobs.

He gave no time frame for the 250,000 job target. Tsang had said earlier this week that he expected Hong Kong's economy to worsen in coming few months. The government recently cut its 2008 GDP growth forecast to 3 to 3.5 percent from 4 to 5 percent.

The unemployment rate rose to 3.5 percent in August-October, from 3.4 percent in July-September quarter. The government said the jobless rate was a lagging indicator and had yet to truly reflect the impact of the global financial crisis.

Economists see it topping 4 percent within a few months as Hong Kong is now in recession and as a trading and financial hub is being hit by the global economic downturn. The jobless rate has come down from a record 8.5 percent in the past five years as the economy has rebounded, but it now looks set to rise sharply in the next year as a global economic downturn hurts Hong Kong businesses.
