Goodknight Survey Uncovers Year-Round Mosquito-Borne Diseases Concerns Among Indians


·         80% of South India Believe malaria and dengue Can happen Anytime, Not Just During Monsoons

·         East India agrees with this revelation the most (86%), followed by West (81%), North (80%) regions

Majority of Indians fear threat of mosquito-borne disease year-round. Nearly 81% of Indians believe mosquito-borne diseases like malaria and dengue can strike any time of the year, not just during the monsoons. This surprising insight was revealed in a recent pan-India survey, titled ‘One Mosquito, Countless Threats’ by Goodknight, India's leading household insecticide brand from Godrej Consumer Products Ltd (GCPL). The survey was conducted by market research firm YouGov.

India reported more than 94000 dengue cases alone last year, as per a report by National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC). With World Mosquito Day approaching on August 20th, this serves as a timely reminder. It's a call to action for continued vigilance with Goodknight, highlighting the importance of prioritizing year-round protection against mosquito-borne diseases.

The Goodknight survey was based on a representative size of 1011 respondents with shared concern among both males and females regarding the year-round threat of malaria and dengue. 83% of male respondents and 79% of female respondents resonated with the apprehension. Moreover, according to various third-party research, the economic toll of mosquito-borne illnesses like malaria and dengue in India is high. 

In terms of geographic clusters, the survey data underscores similar level of concerns about mosquito-borne diseases. The East comprising states such as Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, and Assam stands out as the most vigilant, with a staggering 86% of respondents believing that malaria and dengue can happen any time of the year. Following closely, the West comprising states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh registers at 81%, while both the North comprising states such Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and South regions comprising states such Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, & Telangana show similar levels of concern at 80%. These regional insights highlight the importance of year-long prevention strategies to combat malaria and dengue.

This Independence Day, Philip Morris International’s (PMI) India affiliate, IPM India, reinforces its commitment towards illicit tobacco trade prevention to safeguard India’s economic interest & protect consumers.

Illicit tobacco trade is a major threat and growing challenge worldwide. India has witnessed a significant rise in illicit in recent years and it only seems to rise with time. As per 2022 FICCI Cascade study, the overall market for illegal cigarettes in India is estimated to be at ?22,930 crore. As per the reports, the total loss to the Govt. of India estimated for 2022, on account of the illicit markets in the tobacco industry is ?13,331 crore, up from ?6,240 crore in 2012, an increase by 46%. According to the Tobacco Institute of India (TII), the illegal cigarette trade comprising internationally smuggled and locally manufactured tax-evaded cigarettes account for as much as  one-fourth of the cigarette industry in India.

As per the recent reports, throughout 2023-2024, law enforcement agencies have seized illegal cigarettes across many Indian cities. In Guwahati, customs officials and railway authorities confiscated over 11 lakh sticks on multiple occasions, with the Assam Rifles also making seizures. Visakhapatnam saw the police and customs seize over 21 lakh sticks, while in Vijayawada, the tally reached over 103 lakh sticks, including 75 boxes. Hyderabad’s police force seized 267 cartons and 4.5 lakh sticks. Additionally, Lucknow’s customs officials seized over 2.12 lakh sticks and a substantial number of packs and boxes. Furthermore, Calicut Airport, Faridabad, Amritsar, and Indore experienced various seizures by customs, the police, and the DRI. Pune and Silchar, Raipur, Surat, and Ahmedabad saw the DRI seize over 85 lakh sticks.

According to Euromonitor International's 2023 report, illicit cigarette volumes in India reached 30.2 billion sticks in 2022, trailing only behind China and Brazil.

Globally, illicit trade continues to be a growing concern. KPMG 2022 annual study ‘Illicit cigarette consumption in the EU, UK, Norway, Switzerland, Moldova & Ukraine’, commissioned by Philip Morris Products SA, revealed that 35.8 billion illicit cigarettes were consumed across the EU alone, causing governments the loss of an estimated €11.3 billion in tax revenue—8.5% more than in 2021. The growth of the illicit market in the EU was partly driven by the continued rise of counterfeit consumption, which reached its highest level ever recorded. Notably, the vast majority of counterfeits (61.5%) were consumed in France.

Understanding The Links Between Sustainable Development And Public Policies – A Seminar at MAHE, Bengaluru

MIT, MAHE Hosted 78th Independence Day Celebration At Manipal


Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal, a constituent unit of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), hosted the 78th Independence Day celebration on 15th August 2024. The event was held in front of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences (formerly MMMC, Manipal).

Dr. H S Ballal, Pro Chancellor, MAHE Manipal, was present as the chief guest, and Lt. Gen. (Dr.) M D Venkatesh, VSM (Retd), Vice Chancellor, MAHE Manipal, was the guest of honour. Dr. P Giridhar Kini, Registrar, MAHE, Manipal, and Dr. Somashekar Bhat, Joint Director, MIT, Manipal, graced the event with their presence along with other dignitaries.

The day commenced at 8:50 AM with an assembly in front of the Department of Basic Medical Sciences, followed by the welcome address by Dr. Somashekar Bhat, Joint Director, MIT, Manipal. The National flag was hoisted by the chief guest, followed by Parade Reporting, Inspection, and March Past. The Guest of Honour delivered the Independence Day message, and participation awards were then presented.

Fresh Bus Raises INR 87.5 Crore Series A To Expand Route Network And Scale Operations


-          The new round of funding is being led by prominent investor Maniv, with participation from Shell Ventures, Alteria Capital, and existing investor Riverwalk Holdings

-          Fresh Bus will utilize the new funds to add 15 routes and deploy 150 new electric buses

All-electric, digital-first intercity bus startup Fresh Bus has raised INR 87.5 Crore ($10.5 million) through its Series A funding round. The Series A financing was led by international early-stage transportation-focused VC fund Maniv, with participation from Shell Ventures, Alteria Capital, and existing investor Riverwalk Holdings.

With its state-of-the-art fleet of 20 electric buses, Fresh Bus today provides seamless, convenient, affordable and eco-friendly travel on its current Bengaluru-Tirupati and Hyderabad-Vijayawada routes. Fresh Bus offers customers a digital-first customer experience, with best-in-class ticketing, real-time tracking of buses, a robust loyalty program, and more.

With this new injection of funding, Fresh Bus will expand its route network by adding 15 new routes and launching 150 e-buses soon. The new round will finance Fresh Bus’ fast-growing fleet. Fresh Bus will use the funds to scale its operations, enhance its technological capabilities, and strengthen its strategic team to drive growth. Fresh Bus was previously backed by notable industry leaders including Kunal Shah, Founder & CEO, CRED, Sudarshan Venu, MD, TVS Motors, and Deepak Garg, CEO & Founder, Rivigo. Earlier, Fresh Bus also secured 16 Cr as an investment from ixigo, a leading Indian OTA.

"Having served over 4 lakh passengers to date with an impeccable 95% OTP (On-Time Performance), an industry best, our goal is to establish a nationwide network and become the Indian market leader for intercity bussing in the upcoming years,” said Sudhakar Chirra, Founder & CEO of Fresh Bus: “We expect to scale to 1000 electric buses pan-India over the next four years, generate skilled employment opportunities for thousands of people and offer a green alternative for mass road transportation.”

Every day, over a hundred thousand bus services transport over 1 Cr Indians between the country’s cities, a market worth over INR 84,000 crore today. Since its inception, Fresh Bus has saved over 42 lakh liters of diesel, reducing nearly 15,000 tons of CO2 emissions – an impact equivalent to saving about 2.5 lakh trees.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Ranks MAHE 4th In University Category


The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) 4th rank Nationally in the university category, making it one of the top 10 universities in the country. MAHE’s position moved to 4th from 6th last year, showing a consistent desire to improve and provide the best quality of education.

In overall India Rankings, MAHE has secured the position in top 20 varsities of the country standing at 14th position. Many of the constituent units of MAHE are also among the top 10 position under various disciplines. In dental category, Manipal College of Dental Sciences, Manipal secured 2nd position, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal stood at 8th position in pharmacy and in medical category, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal secured 9th position. The lists feature rankings of higher education institutions in subcategories, including top universities and colleges, under engineering, medical, legal, management, pharma, architecture, agriculture, and allied sector. Institutions have been ranked based on parameters such as Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.

Known as the International Liquid Mirror Telescope (ILMT), it is the largest in Asia and was inaugurated on 22 March 2023.

ADITYA-L1: First solar probe: ADITYA-L1 is India’s first satellite dedicated to studying the outer atmosphere of the sun. It has been indigenously developed by ISRO, and launched on 2 September 2023. It will stay approximately 1.5 million km away from Earth, which is about 1 per cent of the distance between the Sun and Earth.

First cloned cow: On 16 March 2023, Ganga, the first cloned cow in India, was born. The scientists at NDRI, Karnal, Haryana, created her after they got access to a non-invasive technology called ‘Ovum Pick-Up’ in 2018.

* The composition, created on the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day has been performed by the Gurus & Scholars of ITC SRA in the true spirit of ‘Guru-Shishya Parampara’

On the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day, ITC Ltd. has paid tribute to the Nation with the creation of a unique musical composition ‘Desh Ek Raag’ performed by the Gurus and Shishyas of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy (ITC-SRA). The soul-stirring composition captures the confluence of Hindustani Classical Music forms, rooted in the cultural traditions of the country. The musical ensemble innovatively combines western and Indian instrumental accompaniments to play Hindustani Classical tunes in order to contemporise Indian classical music for the younger generations. The composition, rendered in a musical video, was shared by Mr. Sanjiv Puri, Chairman of ITC, through a post on LinkedIn today. Mr. Puri is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of ITC-SRA.

Performed by ITC-SRA Gurus and scholars, in collaboration with other artists, the special composition is an ode to the Nation, in which Parampara and Pragati (Tradition & Progress); Viraasat and Vikas (Heritage & Development) go hand-in hand.
