L&T Technology Services Limited (BSE: 540115, NSE: LTTS), India’s leading pure-play engineering services company, announced its results for the first quarter ended June 30, 2020.

Key financial parameters for Q1FY21:

“With many industries operating at limited capacity on account of the pandemic, Q1 was a challenging quarter as expected. Still, we had a good performance in two of our segments - Telecom & Hitech and Medical, and our large deal engine continues to churn wins. Free cash flow generation was strong during the quarter and the healthy cash position sets us up well for the future.  Looking ahead, we see a path for recovery backed by good order bookings and a healthy pipeline. We expect both revenue and operating margin to show sequential improvement over the remaining quarters of the current fiscal.

The acquisition of Orchestra will enhance our offerings in the areas of Network Engineering & Enterprise Mobility and provide us strategic access to Telecom service providers who are investing in next generation digital systems for 5G and IoT networks.

As customers redraw their business plans, we are working with them to improve operating efficiency, finetune sourcing and production plans, and prepare for faster go-to-market.  Our newer set of offerings like Frugal Manufacturing, Telehealth solution and i-BEMS Shield are seeing good traction in the market. The large deal discussions we are having with customers are a notch higher in terms of criticality and adoption of new age technologies, which we believe will pave the way for greater mind share and competitive differentiation”, said Dr. Keshab Panda, CEO & Managing Director, L&T Technology Services Limited.

During the quarter, LTTS won 9 multi-million dollar deals across all major industry segments which includes one deal with TCV of USD30mn plus and two deals with TCV of USD15mn plus. On a YoY basis, LTTS has increased its USD10mn+ clients by 5 and its USD1mn+ clients by 3.

Will $3.9b Dell acquisition of Perot Systems payoff?

Dell agreed to buy Perot Systems for $3.9 billion, undertaking its biggest purchase ever to compete with International Business Machines and Hewlett-Packard in computer services. Dell, the second-biggest maker of personal computers, offered $30 a share in cash, about 68% more than Perot’s closing price September 18. The acquisition probably will boost profit in fiscal 2012, Round Rock, Texas-based Dell said in a statement on Monday.

Chief executive officer Michael Dell is pushing into computer services as consumers and companies curb PC purchases to cope with the economic slump. Larger services units helped IBM and Hewlett-Packard withstand the recession better than Dell, whose sales slumped 22% last quarter. The new services business would have annual sales of about $8 billion.

“This significantly expands Dell’s enterprise-solutions capabilities,’’ CEO Dell said in the statement. “The acquisition makes such great sense because of the obvious ways our businesses complement each other.’’

Once the transaction is complete, Perot Systems, based in Plano, Texas, will become Dell’s services unit. The purchase price is more than twice what Dell paid last year for EqualLogic, which was the computer maker’s biggest acquisition until now.

Perot Systems jumped as much as $11.89, or 66%, to $29.80 in trading before US exchanges opened. Dell, which ranks second to Hewlett-Packard in PC sales, fell as much as 5.6% to $15.75.

The acquisition of Perot, founded by former presidential candidate H Ross Perot, mirrors Hewlett-Packard’s purchase of Electronic Data Systems for $13.2 billion last year. EDS, the world’s secondlargest computer services provider after IBM, helped Hewlett-Packard increase services revenue 93% last quarter. Sales in the PC unit fell 18%.

Dell has relied on cost reductions to help prop up profit amid the recession. The company, aiming to save $4 billion a year, has farmed out 40% of manufacturing. Still, profit dropped 23% last quarter. Perot, which sells services to industries including health care, reported an 11% drop in sales and a 3% gain in net income last quarter. The company expects to benefit from the US government’s plans for electronic health records, Peter Altabef, CEO of Perot, said in an April interview. IBM’s sales fell 13% last quarter, while Hewlett-Packard’s total revenue dropped about 2%.

The companies have benefited from long-term services contracts to maintain corporations’ computers and networks. The Perot acquisition, while not subject to a financing condition, will need government approvals and the satisfaction of other conditions, Dell said. Dell to acquire x for $3.9bn.

Is Dell likely to cut 1,900 jobs from Ireland?

Dell Inc, the world's No. 2 PC maker, will cut about 1,900 of 3,000 jobs at its manufacturing plant in Limerick in the west of Ireland, Dell said on Thursday.

Dell, which ranks itself as Ireland's largest exporter, largest technology company and second largest company overall, said it would move production of computer systems for customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to its Polish plant and third-party manufacturing partners.

Dell cut more than 8,000 jobs last year and struggled to regain market share it lost to larger rival Hewlett-Packard Co. It also said last year it would outsource more manufacturing to cut costs.

Dell preparing for changes in senior management

Dell Inc's president of global operations, Michael Cannon, and chief marketing officer, Mark Jarvis will leave their roles in moves expected to be announced soon, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people briefed on the matter.

The people told the paper that they expect Jarvis to leave Dell, while Cannon will likely stay on in a different capacity.

Other changes are expected to focus on cutting costs and gaining tighter control over the company's global operations.

Two people with knowledge of the situation told the paper that Dell may also make cuts to its lower executive ranks.

The impending changes are intended to make managing Dell's world-wide business more efficient, people briefed on the matter said.

Operations now divided by geography will be consolidated into international business units, a shift Dell made earlier this year with its consumer division.

A Dell spokesman declined to comment to the paper on any changes, but said Dell has "been in a two-year process of positioning the company best for customers and long-term growth."

Dell could not be immediately reached for comment.

Motorola bosses take 25% pay cut

Motorola Inc, the second-biggest US seller of mobile phones, will freeze US pension plans and reduce executive salaries to help cope with the economic slump.

Co-Chief Executive Officers Greg Brown and Sanjay Jha are taking a 25 per cent cut in base salary in 2009, Motorola said in a statement. Employees in many markets won’t get a raise, and the company will temporarily stop making matching contributions to US workers’ retirement investment accounts.

Jha, hired in August to lead the wireless device division, seeks to turn around a unit that has posted operating losses of $2.8 billion since the start of 2007. He tapped Google Inc to supply software for phones after losing market share to Samsung Electronics Inc and Apple Inc, whose iPhone 3G topped Motorola’s Razr in the third quarter as the most popular US phone.

“Turnarounds are always hard to execute on, and a bad economy makes them tougher,” said Tavis McCourt, an analyst at Morgan Keegan & Co in Nashville. “I’d be shocked if this is all they do in 2009.”

The pay cuts and pension freeze will help Motorola add to the $800 million in annual costs savings it announced in October, including 3,000 job cuts, the company said.

Worldwide mobile-phone sales will drop 13 per cent next year, the first decline since 2001, as economic growth slows, analysts at Citigroup Inc said in a research note.

Motorola, based in Schaumburg, Illinois, rose 5 cents, or 1.1 per cent, to $4.46 at 12:07 pm in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares had dropped 73 per cent this year before today.

Dell likely to send more work to Asia

Since the beginning of the slowdown, IT firms have been maintaining that India will benefit if firms try to cut costs. Now, there is evidence that it actually may be happening.

In a conference call, Dell’s Asia-Pacific and Japan head Steve Felice said there is an opportunity to shift more work to Asia and Dell will do it. In its third-quarter results announced, the US-based PC manufacturer’s tight rein on costs helped it post better earnings despite a sales slump.

Dell has invested heavily in its India and China factories. From Bangalore, it has built systems management capability and software for enterprise activity. While in China, it does design work and R&D. In addition, in Malaysia’s Cyberjaya, it does software development. “Our intention is to grow these,” said Felice. Elsewhere, Dell has announced job cuts.

“We don’t just service Asia out of these locations. They have worked well globally to the extent that there are opportunities to shift more work to Asia arise, we will do it... We are happy with the performance of these facilities to serve global needs and will continue to invest them depending on market conditions,” Felice said.

However, he said the growth in Asia was not necessarily linked to the cost-cutting in the US and was in response to the growth in other parts of the world.

Felice said there was decline in overall IT spending in Asia-Pacific and Japan. Dell had weathered it and grown. Terming India’s growth as outstanding, he said the country had witnessed 77% growth in unit terms and 48% growth in revenues for Dell in the third quarter.

For China, growth was up 44% in unit terms and 18% in revenue terms. “We are extremely committed to India,” he added. The surge in growth has primarily come from consumers and the small.
