DSP Mutual Fund, Dentsu Creative Webchutney & Falco Robotics Partner To Reunite Lost Children With Families At Purna Maha Kumbh

* Launch ‘Garuda Rakshak’, a Human-Interest Initiative…

The Purna Maha Kumbh, a rare and sacred Hindu festival, occurs once every 144 years, following 12 cycles of the Maha Kumbh. This year, it is expected to draw a record 400 million devotees, solidifying its position as the largest human gathering on Earth. However, amidst this grand celebration, a pressing concern emerges: the alarming number of missing children. Over 250,000 individuals, many of whom were children, have vanished during past events, facing exploitation or permanent family separation.

In response to this unfortunate but very real problem, DSP Mutual Fund has partnered with Dentsu Creative Webchutney, in association with Falco Robotics, to launch Garuda Rakshak – a groundbreaking offline, drone-based search-and-rescue solution designed to overcome network congestion challenges and swiftly reunite lost children with their families. Derived from the mythological Garuda, a divine bird embodying protection and vigilance, Garuda Rakshak serves as a guardian in the sky.

Based on 1970s marine navigation technology, it utilises low-frequency radio bands for long-range communication and precision satellite tracking, all while requiring minimal infrastructure.

If a child goes missing, guardians can simply tap their ID bands at the Lost and Found Centre to activate the Garuda Rakshak system. The drone, armed with real-time geo-data from the child’s wristband, springs into action, pinpointing the child’s location within minutes. It deploys an extendable colour marker high in the sky, cutting through the chaos to visually guide rescuers, while simultaneously transmitting the child’s details to the on-ground rescue team. This seamless, revolutionary solution ensures a fast, reliable rescue, even in the most chaotic situations.

Abhik Sanyal, Head of Marketing, DSP Asset Managers, said, “At DSP Mutual Fund, we believe that investing goes beyond chasing monetary gains—it’s about bettering lives, communities, and inspiring hope. Backing an idea like Garuda Rakshak truly resonates with our belief that the most meaningful solutions to real problems of today can sometimes be found by those willing to dip into the wisdom of the past. For us, this initiative of hope came straight from the heart, while still embodying, perhaps even elevating, our commitment to DSP’s ‘Invest for Good’ philosophy. Because the most meaningful returns are found in the safety, love, and smiles we can help bring back to the world.”

Gurbaksh Singh, Chief Innovation Officer, India, Dentsu Creative, added, "In an era dominated by IoTs, we've taken a step back to draw inspiration from the past and fused it with new-age drone automation that not only saves lives but also restores hope and reassurance to families in their most vulnerable moments. The project showcases the transformative power of technology when driven by human compassion and a relentless pursuit of a safer, more caring world.”

Vishal Dixit, CEO, Falco Robotics, commented, “The integration of drone technology with Garuda Rakshak's offline navigation system has resulted in a truly pioneering solution, uniquely equipped to handle the complexities of such extraordinary, high-density events. We're excited to see the difference it makes.”

Harnessing human ingenuity and technology to safeguard lives, Garuda Rakshak paves the way for innovation in search and rescue, reuniting families with every flight.

ASRTU, BOCI and AIMTC Announce January 24th As “Drivers’ Day”

* Honoring the backbone of India’s Transportation Sector

* Call  to operators to celebrate and recognize their driver workforce

* Initiative supported by ASTRU, BOCI and AIMTC

India’s transportation sector is powered by over 12 million commercial drivers and countless passenger vehicle drivers who work tirelessly to move goods and people across the nation. They form the backbone of our economy and society, connecting rural and urban India, enabling commerce, and ensuring mobility for millions. Recognizing their vital role, the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings (ASRTU), the Bus & Car Operators Confederation of India (BOCI) and All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), are proud to announce January 24th as “Drivers’ Day.”

India operates one of the largest road transport systems globally, with over 1.5 million buses run by private operators and 150,000 buses under State Road Transport Undertakings (SRTUs), moving over 70 million passengers daily. Additionally, commercial truck drivers handle about 70% of the country’s freight. Despite their vital role, drivers face challenges like long hours, poor infrastructure, safety risks, and limited welfare access. Heavy vehicles are involved in most road accidents, with driver fatigue being a key factor. The Government, has announced various initiatives like Highway Rest Stops and tech initiatives like vehicle telematics to improve safety and efficiency. While these efforts mark a positive step forward, there is still considerable work to be done.

On the proposed “Drivers’ Day”, January 24th, ASRTU, AIMTC and BOCI urge all stakeholder- state agencies, private operators, and the public—to celebrate drivers and acknowledge their invaluable contributions through simple, yet meaningful gestures, such as presenting them with flowers or certificates of appreciation.

Dr. T. Surya Kiran, Executive Director of ASRTU, emphasized, “Drivers are the custodians of safety for millions of passengers every single day. Their hard work ensures that India stays connected, whether it’s a student reaching school, a patient heading to a hospital, or goods being delivered to sustain industries and homes. Recognizing their contributions and improving their lives will inspire a culture of respect, safety, and pride in their profession. This initiative is not just about acknowledgment but also about driving real change for their well-being.”

Mr. Prasanna Patwardhan, President, BOCI, stated, “Drivers’ Day is not just a symbolic gesture—it is a meaningful step towards highlighting the crucial role that drivers play in our society and economy. Their untiring efforts keep the wheels of progress moving, often under challenging conditions. We should prioritize their well-being by addressing their hardships, providing better working environments, and equipping them with the tools and training they need to succeed. Let this day remind us to treat drivers with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), an apex body of Transporters both Cargo and Passenger also supports this initiative and has planned a special programme in recognition of the community. Dr. Harish Sabharwal, President, AIMTC, added, “National Drivers' Day will be celebrated with joy and enthusiasm across the country every year on 24th January. On this day, we will honor and encourage our driver brothers. Dedicating a special day for drivers will boost their morale and help them view their work as a respected profession. I am delighted to share that AIMTC has entered into a significant agreement with Lions International Club to provide health check-up camps, eye examination camps, and free cataract surgeries for our drivers across the country. Additionally, we are planning to collaborate with insurance companies to offer a ?5,00,000 insurance cover for drivers, and we are working diligently to implement this soon.”

Drivers are the engines of progress, moving people and goods across India’s vast expanse and connecting its most remote corners. Supporting and valuing their efforts is key to building Viksit Bharat by 2047. On January 24th, let’s celebrate Drivers’ Day, and let us honor these unsung heroes of the road and recommit ourselves to building a safer, smarter, and more sustainable transport ecosystem for the nation.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Concludes 24-Hour Hackathon In Delhi, Celebrating Road Safety Month 2025, Empowering Young Innovators

As part of its ongoing commitment to fostering road safety innovation and celebrating ‘Road Safety Month’ (January 18 – February 17, 2025), Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) proudly announced the successful conclusion of the 24-hour Toyota Hackathon at GL Bajaj Institute, Greater Noida, Delhi. The event, graced by Chief Guest Mr Ashok Kumar IPS , Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida UP, Guest of Honour Mr RR Meena Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India  and TKM’s senior leadership, including Mr. Vikram Gulati, Country Head & Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Governance, provided an engaging platform for young innovators to develop practical and implementable solutions to critical road safety challenges.

The two-day hackathon was further enriched by expert mentorship from faculty at GL Bajaj Institute and Delhi Technology University. These mentors guided participants in refining their ideas and transforming them into actionable solutions, underscoring Toyota’s commitment to nurturing future changemakers.

Education and Road Safety are core pillars of TKM’s CSR initiatives. The Toyota Hackathon is a flagship component of its broader Road Safety Initiative, aimed at achieving zero traffic fatalities through a comprehensive safety framework. This reflects Toyota’s holistic philosophy of prioritizing safety—not only through secure vehicle manufacturing but also by fostering awareness and driving behavioural change within communities. The hackathon addressed key themes such as Road Safety Awareness and Education, School Zone Safety, Traffic Management, and IoT Integration in Road Safety. The goal was to encourage digital and policy-driven solutions that can significantly reduce accidents and save lives.

India records the highest number of annual road crash fatalities globally. Each year, the country witnesses over 1,50,000 fatalities due to road accidents, with road traffic injuries being the leading cause of death for people aged 5-29 years.  Recognizing this crisis, TKM launched the Toyota Hackathon in 2018 to integrate road safety into school and college curriculums. By encouraging students to become critical thinkers and solution developers, the initiative empowers young minds to address contemporary road safety challenges. This platform not only unlocks the potential of young innovators but also develops them into ‘Change Agents’—pioneering positive behavioural shifts in their communities and making meaningful contributions to road safety.

The Delhi leg of the Toyota Hackathon 2025 saw participation from over 400 students across grades 9 to 11, representing nearly 100 schools. Participants followed a structured five-phase journey:

Team Selection & Idea Submission

Boot Camp Shortlisting

Final 24-Hour Hackathon

Incubation Support for City Winners

Out of 100 initial teams, 31 advanced to post-boot camp, 10 teams competed in the final hackathon, out of which 3 emerged as winners. These winning teams will receive ongoing incubation support to bring their solutions to fruition.

Following the successful event in Delhi, the Toyota Hackathon 2025 will continue in Mumbai on January 29 and Bangalore on February 14. For the 2024-25 academic year, TKM plans to expand the initiative to 300 institutions across these cities, with over 400 innovative concepts already submitted. Nearly 75 teams are expected to present functional prototypes, with top teams receiving incubation support. This initiative not only amplifies Toyota’s vision for a safer future but also inspires the next generation to leverage their knowledge and creativity in addressing critical societal challenges.

Present at the occasion, Mr Ashok Kumar IPS, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Greater Noida UP said, “The Toyota Hackathon is more than a competition—it is a movement towards creating a culture of safety and responsibility among young minds. Engaging students at this formative stage is key to instilling values of innovation and accountability. The ingenuity displayed here today is a testament to what our youth can achieve when given the right platform and support. I commend Toyota Kirloskar Motor for spearheading this impactful initiative and look forward to seeing these ideas transform into tangible solutions that benefit our communities.”

Sharing his thoughts, Guest of Honour Mr RR Meena Deputy Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India said, “The Toyota Hackathon is an example of how innovation and youth engagement can come together to address critical challenges like road safety. Involving young minds in this dialogue at such an early stage not only nurtures their creativity but also instils a sense of ownership and accountability toward societal well-being. Through this initiative, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has demonstrated the transformative power of collaboration, mentorship, and innovation. The solutions presented today showcase the immense potential of the students to think beyond the conventional, creating impactful ideas that can lead to lasting change. It is inspiring to see the commitment and passion displayed by these young innovators, and I am confident that their efforts will contribute significantly to building safer and more secure communities for generations to come. Government of India is doing lot of activities in creating road safety awareness. Today, I would also like to urge the students to login to Mera Yuva Bharat Portal and take part in various road safety activities such as road safety pledge, quiz, slogan, poster making etc.”

Speaking at the event, Mr. Vikram Gulati, Country Head & Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and governance, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said, “At Toyota Kirloskar Motor, safety is not just an attribute of our vehicles—it is a fundamental value embedded in our philosophy. The Toyota Hackathon exemplifies our dedication to empowering the youth to address pressing challenges like road safety. The passion, creativity, and technical acumen demonstrated by these students have been truly inspiring. Their solutions go beyond immediate impact, shaping a sustainable future with safer roads for all. We are proud to support their journey from innovative concepts to real-world implementation, furthering our vision for a safer and more responsible society."

The Toyota Hackathon is a key component of TKM’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, complementing the Toyota Safety Education Programme (TSEP), which has reached over 800,000 students since 2007. These initiatives empower youth to drive road safety through education, innovation, and collaboration. By fostering creativity and social responsibility, the Toyota Hackathon 2025 reinforces TKM’s leadership in sustainable mobility and road safety. UN Development Programme And The Coca-Cola Foundation Partner To Scale Up Management Of Plastic Waste In Asia

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) have partnered to help address the growing challenge of plastic waste management in Asia, a region that is home to significant environmental opportunities and challenges. Rapid urbanization, increasing demand for single-use plastics, and gaps in waste management infrastructure have contributed to a rising volume of plastic waste, making effective solutions more urgent than ever.

A significant portion of the world’s plastic waste enters the ocean through waterways in the region, posing serious threats to marine ecosystems, human health, and livelihoods. Sixteen of the top twenty polluting rivers in the world are in Asia, and account for more than two thirds -of the global annual volume of plastics flowing into the world’s oceans.

In response to this urgent issue, UNDP and TCCF are scaling up efforts in nine Asian countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, India, Maldives, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam—supported by a $15 million grant from TCCF to support UNDP’s initiatives across the region.

The three-year multi-country programme launched in India today, will help improve plastic waste management, promote recycling, reduce plastic leakage into the environment, foster country-based solutions, and facilitate regional collaboration. By adopting and disseminating best practices across the region, the programme aims to inspire policy changes and community-level actions to reduce and help to eliminate disposable plastic and improve the livelihoods of waste workers.

While expanding successful initiatives, the programme will focus on developing innovative business models for waste collection and recycling, offering technical advice on environmental best practices and tapping into the latest technology to improve collection and recycling, to reduce plastic leakage.

"Tackling plastic waste isn't just about cleaning up – it's also about building a smarter development model. Across Asia, countries are combating the problem by embracing the circular economy. Through our Zero Waste and Plastics initiatives, we are helping them craft policies, attract investments, and reduce the consumption of single-use plastics,” said Christophe Bahuet, UNDP Deputy Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific. “With this initiative, we are also empowering communities to scale up solutions that will effectively reduce plastic pollution and safeguard our planet."

“Collaboration is key to help improve waste management systems and strengthen recycling infrastructure. Through our collaboration with UNDP, the Foundation aims to advance solutions that minimize packaging waste, support better collection methods, and enhance processing capabilities. This approach not only helps address plastic waste more effectively but also contributes to long-term improvements in local communities and the broader environment.” said Carlos Pagoaga, President, The Coca Cola Foundation.

Happiest Health’s ‘Tech & Innovation In Healthcare Summit 2025’ Explores The Transformative Impact Of New-Age Technologies

 * The summit involved discussions around innovations improving patient care and healthcare delivery, offering delegates expert insights and networking opportunities

Health and wellness enterprise Happiest Health unveiled the ‘Technology & Innovation in Healthcare Summit 2025’ in Bengaluru today. The high-profile event saw healthcare experts and industry come together and discuss the ever-growing potential of emerging technologies in healthcare practices, giving individuals practical insights into their implementation. The summit was inaugurated by Mr Ashok Soota, Executive Chairman of Happiest Minds, amidst over 400 participants.

The summit introduced delegates to panel discussions and talks on vital topics shaping the future of healthcare, including those on artificial intelligence, robotics, and telemedicine. The informative sessions provided deep insights into how the industry is evolving with these innovations and the opportunities to look forward to, besides giving individuals the chance to network with industry leaders and technology innovators. The summit generated plenty of important conversations in a collaborative environment, reflecting Happiest Health’s commitment to adding value to the healthcare space in India.

Mr. Ashok Soota, Executive Chairman, Happiest Minds in his keynote address on opportunities in healthcare through innovation and technology, spoke extensively on various healthcare modules, touching upon innovation, data in healthcare, industry disruptions, and more. On what’s driving innovation, he said, “Today, we are witnessing the convergence of three forces. These forces of convergence are spatial omics technologies becoming increasingly high throughput and high resolution, large-scale data sets generated by patient biopsies and such, and AI models becoming even more powerful and sophisticated. These three convergence forces will lead to more powerful interventions.”

The summit’s first panel discussion, titled ‘AI & Tech In Healthcare: Is Adoption Happening Fast?’, was moderated by Dr Sreenivasan Narayana, President and CEO of Healthcare Services, Happiest health, was led by Mr Kalyan Sivasailam, founder and CEO of 5C Network, Dr Manjiri Bakre, founder and CEO of OncoStem Diagnostics, and Mr Niranjan Subbarao, co-founder and CEO of Cyclops Medtech. The discussion covered how the rapid adoption of technology like machine learning and data analytics is leading to improved diagnostics, personalised treatment plans, and increased operational efficiency, transforming patient care and making it more precise.

Dr Harshavardhan Rao B, consultant – Department of Medical Gastroenterology, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, held a session on ‘AI and its Applications in Healthcare & in Medical Gastroenterology in Your Practice’. Speaking on challenges from a physician’s perspective, he said: “One of the things that we consider when we talk about AI is whether it will affect our relationship with patients. Most patient-reported outcome measures are based on an excellent relationship with the patient. There is a placebo effect with most medications. And if the patient does not trust the doctor and the medicine, the clinical outcomes will be sub-optimal. That doesn’t diminish the fact that medications work. It’s just that we have to recognise the effect the placebo effect has – with AI and with reduced interaction, will that affect patient care?”

A panel discussion on the ‘Hospitals of Tomorrow’ involved Mr. Hanuman Jayaram, CTO, CTSI South Asia, an affiliate of Siemens Healthineers, Mr Kumar KV, group CIO of Narayana Health, and Mr Srinivas Iyengar, VP, IG head – Healthcare & Life Sciences, Happiest Minds. Mr Kumar KV shared his thoughts on the hurdles hospitals can expect in the future: “The key backbone, especially in the next five–10 years, is going to be from a technology standpoint. This basically necessitates that healthcare providers have all the tools required to provide efficient care, save lives, generate efficiency, and improve outcomes. Apart from having a suitable workforce and embracing digital transformation to transform the business model, the biggest challenge is to get the technology equation right.”

Mr. Sridhar Mantha, CEO of Generative AI Business, Happiest Minds, delivered the valedictory address on future developments in healthcare technology. He discussed the problem with healthcare data for training AI models: “Based on the AI models looking at the data right now, it’s quite easy for us to train the models. But it’s not that simple, as not all data is valuable. There’s enough garbage in the data. So, provided we have sufficient quality data to train the model on, we can reach at least 90% of the quality.”

Mr Ashish Pratap Singh, chief marketing officer of Happiest Health, said, “’The Technology & Innovation in Healthcare Summit’ is meant to catalyse dialogue between healthcare and technology experts, combining IT expertise with healthcare innovation. We intend to showcase the latest advancements and foster actionable insights and collaborations to revolutionise patient care and transform the healthcare landscape.”

Jacobi Group Unveils Carbonizer Technology, Setting New Standards In Sustainable Manufacturing

-       Reducing the impact of emissions and ensuring a cleaner environment

-       Generating power as a co-product while reducing emissions

The Jacobi Group of Companies, a globally recognized leader in the manufacturing and supply of activated carbon and related services, today unveiled its revolutionary Carbonization technology with a machine named Carbonizer. This state-of the-art equipment was inaugurated by Mr. Christian Kamill, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Sweden, India in the presence of Mr. Remko Goudappel CEO of Jacobi Groups who were Hosted by Mr. Antony Thomas, Managing Director of Jacobi Carbons India Operations. Marking this momentous occasion was also a notable CSR project flagged off by Mr. Remko and Mr. Christian Kamill wherein a government- collaborated ration shop was opened to provide essential goods to underserved communities further reinforcing Jacobi’s mission of working and growing with the community.

This innovation in carbonization significantly reduces environmental impact while boosting energy efficiency. By utilizing renewable coconut shells, the Carbonizer produces high-quality charcoal with a substantially reduced carbon footprint. The technology captures and repurposes volatile gases released during the carbonization process to generate clean energy, which powers Jacobi’s manufacturing facilities. This reduces reliance on external energy sources and reinforces the company’s commitment to sustainability and the promoting a circular economy. This technology would benefit the Indian charcoal suppliers to help produce charcoal in an environment friendly manner.

"Our Carbonizer technology represents a significant leap forward in sustainable manufacturing," said Remko Goudappel, Global CEO of the Jacobi Group of Companies. "It not only redefines how charcoal is produced but also demonstrates our unwavering commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship, in close cooperation with our partners. At Jacobi, we believe that creating a better world starts with rethinking our processes and pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the activated carbon industry."

Designed to process renewable 2700 MT of coconut shells as an input, the Carbonizer transforms it into 970 MT of Charcoal as an output with minimal emissions and maximum energy recovery. During the process of carbonization, the coconut shell will undergo into charring or pyrolysis process to convert as a charcoal. The coconut shells need to be subjected to very high temperatures for several hours to break down into charcoal. During this process biogas will be eliminated, and it is used as a fuel for carbonizer process (Cycle process). An excess heat energy from the incinerator helps to produce steam generation using boiler, which enabling the generation of 400KWH of clean electricity

using steam turbine to power Jacobi’s production facilities and reduce dependence on external energy sources. To understand the process better one may consider this as a scenario wherein processing 90000 kg of input material would result in 9600 units of electricity generated over a period of 24 hours, and coconut shell charcoal producers adopting this technology can achieve energy savings of 85-90% and operational cost reduction of 80% annually.

The Carbonizer technology which underscores Jacobi’s dedication to innovation and environmental sustainability. This technology not only minimizes greenhouse gas emissions but also transforms energy recovery into a key feature of the production process. The captured energy is converted into electricity, which powers not just the Carbonizer itself but also the entire activated carbon production facility. By pioneering this eco-conscious approach, Jacobi solidifies its leadership in sustainable practices within the activated carbon industry. The Carbonizer technology aligns perfectly with corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility (ESR) goals, offering benefits such as lower carbon emissions, use of renewable resources, and reduced energy costs. This transformative technology is ideal for industries such as energy, manufacturing, agriculture, ensuring versatile applications across diverse operational frameworks.

Karnataka Microfinance Sector – Outreach, Pperations & Impact

Microfinance Industry Network (MFIN), a Self-Regulatory Organisation (SRO) recognised by RBI and the Association of Karnataka Microfinance Institutions (AKMI), jointly organised a press meet in Bengaluru to highlight the critical role of microfinance institutions in improving the lives of the underprivileged sections of the society in the state. Mr. Rama Kamaraju, Head – State Initiatives at MFIN along with Mr. Venkatesh N, Managing Director, IIFL Samasta and Mr. Anand Rao, JMD, Chaitanya India Fin Credit underlined the immense contribution of microcredit loans in fostering financial inclusivity and empowerment in both rural and urban Karnataka.

Microfinance has emerged as an impactful tool in ensuring that credit and essential financial services reach the remotest corners of India. In Karnataka, microfinance institutions have transformed the lives of more than 1 crore and currently serve over 63 lakh individuals (unique borrowers) through microcredit loans. The total gross loan portfolio of microfinance institutions in the state has surged from Rs 16,946 crore (Mar-2019) to an impressive Rs 42,265 crore in the last financial year (Mar-24), empowering, women, families, and communities to thrive.

Microfinance customers in Karnataka have shown an eagerness to explore interventions to ensure family well-being and start new businesses. They have shown similar alacrity in learning about good credit discipline, regular repayment of loans and respect for lending institutions' advice to borrow within their capacities.

Mr. Rama Kamaraju, Head, State Initiatives, MFIN stated that “Microfinance operations of RBI regulated entities in the state of Karnataka have traversed a smooth path all along even at the time of demonetisation and  Covid pandemic. Women borrowers from the state have exhibited extraordinary resilience and maintained excellent credit discipline over the years. He mentioned in unequivocal terms that the loans offered by the regulated MFIs have helped changed the narrative from “women development” to “women led development”. Microfinance has received extensive recognition as a strategy for socio-economic empowerment of women, earning them a well-deserved and rightful role in decision making in the family. He further added that Microfinance, dovetailed with the efficient Govt schemes on the ground, has managed to alleviate them out of the poverty trap setting them on an upwards trajectory of sustainable livelihood.

Mr. Kamaraju stated that on the other hand,  regulated MFIs (NBFC-MFIs, Banks, Small Finance Banks) operate under very stringent regulations & oversight both from RBI and MFIN SRO. All these Regulated Entities are governed by the RBI directions on microfinance and Fair Practices code of the RBI. In addition, MFIN has established robust infrastructure and mechanisms to ensure that member institutions operate responsibly, adhering to regulatory standards, and avoiding wrongful practices. To give an example, currently MFIN is undertaking 2,131 financial literacy workshops under the RBI’s Depositors Education and Awareness (DEA) project initiative across the country, over the next 2 years. MFIN also operates a toll free 24*7 Client grievance redressal system in Vernacular language.

He pointed out that the recent reports of protests against MFIs are from a small section of the ill-informed individuals with the aid of unauthorised entities, indulging in unscrupulous rumour-mongering. We wish to assure you all that we follow a very well calibrated advisory approach and have our eye on the ball at all times. He urged the media to carry out a thorough fact check of any issues being reported on the sector so that the MF ecosystem is shielded from any untoward rumours. Having said that, we are open to talk and engage on the right forum to address any genuine concerns with regard to the microfinance ecosystem and its operations.”

Mr Venkatesh N, MD IIFL Samasta Finance Ltd., said, "Microfinance Institutions have been instrumental in empowering women entrepreneurs and uplifting communities by providing crucial financial access to the unbanked.

Regulated Microfinance Institutions have played a pivotal role in driving women's entrepreneurship and empowerment, with far-reaching effects that uplift families and transform entire communities. With this access to the unbanked, we foster entrepreneurial growth and generate crucial local employment, fortifying grassroots economies.

In the past few months, there some stress has been noticed in collections from borrowers who have taken loans from multiple lenders. However, the field reports from December seem to show positive signals of a turnaround, and I feel confident in observing these positive trends over the next few quarters as things normalise. He added that microfinance institutions play a key role in giving Shishu loans under the MUDRA scheme”

Mr. Anand Rao, MD, Chaitanya India Fin Credit stated “Microfinance in Karnataka has a 20 plus years of history of being part of the rural development story of the state. RBI regulated entities are governed by a strong code of conduct. The challenge the sector faces is from unregulated entities.”

Microfinance is important for the socio-economic development of the nation as it provides resources and capital to marginalized groups and those in the informal economy. Microfinance institutions not only help in increasing the household income of the borrowers but also educate them about businesses and help them improve their financial conditions.

78 MFIN Member Microfinance Institutions (Regulated Entities) work across 36 states & union territories, and 721 districts, including 112 Aspirational Districts ensuring that credit and other crucial financial services reach rural and urban India. Primary customers of Microfinance services are 7.94 crore (around 80 million) women from low-income households.

Workplace Wellbeing Redefined: 1to1help’s 2024 Insights Into Counselling, Trends, And Resilience

1to1help, India’s leading Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) service provider, has published its yearly report titled "State of Emotional Wellbeing Report 2024", focused on key trends and challenges around workplace mental health. Based on a substantial dataset of over 83,000 counselling sessions, 12,000 elective screenings, and 42,000 assessments from January to November 2024. The report reveals an increase in the uptake of counselling services among corporate employees. More interestingly, mental health concerns have risen to 15% and is one of the top 2 concerns for which employees reach out for counselling, as compared to previous years.

This also suggests that people are becoming more aware of the importance of mental health and no longer view it as taboo, which has led them to seek counselling for mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, or stress.

Ms. Mahua Bisht, CEO of 1to1help, stated, “Last year, we embarked on the journey of providing industry leaders with authentic, reliable data and actionable insights based on our counselling sessions. Each year, we seek to improve the data we share as well as the impact we deliver, and you will see more granularity in the findings of this year’s report. What really stood out to me this year was that we were able to reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, significantly and demonstrably for individuals struggling with these issues in as few as three sessions.

In addition, we found that managers can play a life-changing role, as over half of the manager referrals we received involved a presence of suicidal risk.

This shows the importance of organizations and crucially, of managers in helping employees reach the right support at the right time.”

Major Highlights from 2024:

1. Mental Health and Workplace Relationship-Related Concerns on the Rise

The support sought through counselling for mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and stress increased to 15%. While counselling related to workplace concerns constituted 11% of the total counselling sessions, workplace relationship-related discussions claimed the top spot, comprising 23% of all such discussions.

2. Gender-Specific Insights

Counseling uptake by men rose by 7%, with 70% of financial consultations being undertaken by men, reflecting their worries about financial anxiety and societal pressure surrounding their role as the ‘breadwinner’ of the family. Notably, there was a disproportionately larger representation of women in counseling with 52% of all counseling sessions being taken by women despite their lower representation in the workplace. Interestingly, 60% of relationship counseling was sought by women, affirming the emotional burden they often bear, in nurturing relationships.

3. Generational Differences in Mental Health

The findings reveal that signs of depression and anxiety were more pronounced among individuals under 30 than those over 45 years. This is likely attributed to stressors like relocation, career changes, and relationship difficulties in their early and mid-twenties. Organizations can support their young employees by facilitating open communication, demonstrating flexibility in work arrangements, and providing opportunities for growth within their organizations.

4. Distress and Suicide Risk Cases Surge

The data reveals a 22% increase in suicide risk and a 17% increase in distress cases compared to 2023. Alarmingly, 59% of employees referred by their managers showed signs of self-harm, reaffirming the need for manager training to help and support distressed employees. The report also reveals that the dependents of employees are at higher risk of suicide, stressing the need to extend emotional well-being assistance to employees’ family members as well.

5. Digital-Life Balance: A Growing Concern

According to the data, only 3% of individuals maintained a healthy digital balance, with most finding it challenging to disconnect from devices. This highlights the need to prioritize non-digital engagement and provide strategies to help employees manage technology use effectively.

6. Effectiveness of Counseling

98% of individuals achieved their goals or made significant progress within just three counseling sessions, underscoring the tangible impact of timely mental health support. Among those who initially screened positive for depression, 53% reported a significant decrease in depression symptoms, and 48% reported decreased anxiety. These results show that structured counseling can effectively address emotional challenges and promote well-being in a short period of time.

The data released in this year's 1to1help report highlights the urgent need for organizations to prioritize mental health by fostering psychologically safe workplaces, training managers to identify distress, and extending EAP services to employees’ dependents. It also suggests that by encouraging digital detox initiatives organizations can further promote healthier work-life integration.
