India Yamaha Motor (IYM) Pvt. Ltd. is proud to commemorate a significant milestone in its manufacturing journey with the completion of 10 years of operations at its Chennai Factory. Reinforcing its role as a critical production base for both domestic and global markets, the company also celebrated the roll-out of its 5 millionth two-wheeler from this state-of-the-art facility—an Aerox 155 Version S that marked the milestone.

Over the past decade, the Chennai plant has become a cornerstone of Yamaha’s global operations to serve both Indian customers and export markets. It currently manufactures Yamaha’s hybrid scooter range including the RayZR 125 Fi and Fascino 125 Fi, along with the performance-oriented Aerox 155 Version S. From an export standpoint, the facility also produces the FZ series, the Saluto range, and the Alpha scooter—reinforcing the factory’s role in delivering Yamaha's trusted quality to diverse global markets. More than 30% of the factory’s total output is exported, reflecting its manufacturing strength and global relevance.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Itaru Otani, Chairman, Yamaha Motor India Group of Companies, said: “The Chennai factory holds strategic importance in Yamaha’s global manufacturing network. It exemplifies our unwavering focus on people, processes, and products—driven by skilled employees, synchronized operations, and a strong commitment to global quality standards. As one of Yamaha’s most modern manufacturing facilities worldwide, it has supported India’s mobility aspirations while reinforcing its role as a trusted exporter to global markets. As we celebrate the roll-out of the 5 millionth two-wheeler, I extend my deepest appreciation to our dedicated employees, vendor partners and passionate customers who have made this journey possible. We will continue to progress, and Chennai factory will keep playing a major role in addressing the evolving customer demands in Indian and overseas markets.”

Spread across 177 acres, the Chennai factory operates with a unique integrated model—109 acres dedicated to IYM and 68 acres to co-located vendor partners—enabling seamless synchronization under a unified ‘One Factory’ concept. This approach has enhanced manufacturing efficiency, speed, and supply chain integration, making the facility one of Yamaha’s most advanced in the world.

Over the last decade, the Chennai manufacturing facility has been consistently upgraded to support Yamaha's evolving premium product strategy—producing high value-added motorcycles and scooters with small to midrange engine displacements. With India’s stringent emission regulations, Yamaha Motor Company Ltd. identified an opportunity to position this plant as a global export hub, delivering products that meet the highest standards of performance and compliance. Today, the factory supports Yamaha’s portfolio across segments—ranging from premium models for Indian customers to those tailored for markets in Europe, Latin America, ASEAN, and beyond. With its focus on quality, digital systems, and sustainable technologies, the facility is well-prepared for the future of smart and eco-friendly manufacturing.

Demonstrating Yamaha’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, the plant houses an installed solar power capacity of 4450 kW, significantly reducing its carbon footprint and supporting green manufacturing practices. The facility incorporates state-of-the-art infrastructure and advanced technologies for zero-water discharge and recycle/reuse of wastewater. It is also designed for maximum use of sunlight, and the buildings are compatible with solar power system installation. All common utilities are centrally located to minimize distribution loss and ensure centralized management, making it a model of sustainable industrial planning.

As Yamaha celebrates this dual milestone, the Chennai plant stands as a testament to the brand’s long-term commitment to make-in-India as a strong manufacturing and development hub of world-class two-wheelers. This achievement marks a significant step forward in strengthening Yamaha’s motorcycle business in Indian market with the unwavering support and loyal partnership of our enthusiastic customers who continue to inspire us at every step to push the limits of innovation and performance offering unique and enriching experiences worldwide.

Confident Group’s Dr. Roy C.J. Awards Rs 1 Crore In Scholarships To 201 Students, Eyes Bigger Impact In 2026

Driven by the deep belief in education as a powerful force for change, Dr. Roy C.J., the visionary behind the leading builder, Confident Group, awarded Rs 1 crore in educational scholarships to 201 deserving school students across Karnataka and Kerala. The initiative, a cornerstone of his philanthropic vision, was celebrated at a ceremony where Dr. Roy C.J emphasized that education is not just a tool for individual growth but the foundation of a stronger nation.

“This scholarship isn’t a corporate gesture, it’s deeply personal. I strongly believe that no child with potential should ever be limited by their circumstances. This conviction is why we have chosen to allocate our family funds to a cause like this”, said Dr. Roy C.J., Founder and Chairman of Confident Group while handing over the cheque to students. “It reflects my family’s belief that when we invest in a child’s potential, we invest in the future of our society,” he added. His dedication extends beyond education, with impactful interventions in healthcare, women’s empowerment, and support for the differently-abled.

A firm advocate for equitable opportunities, Dr. Roy C. J. has long championed education as a catalyst for change. The scholarship program aimed to support students studying in 8th to 10th standard at government-recognized schools. Each selected student received a scholarship of up to Rs 50,000, or their actual school fees. Eligibility for the scholarship was determined by a combined annual parental income below Rs 5 lakhs, coupled with the student achieving over 80% in their previous academic year's final examination. Furthermore, to extend support to multiple deserving individuals within a single household, a maximum of two children per family were eligible, contingent upon all specified conditions being met.

Looking ahead, Dr. Roy C.J. announced an ambitious expansion of the program, aiming to support 300 students in 2026.

Sweat & Concrete: 2-Day Event Brought Community Centred Solutions To Heat Stress

* A People First Cities initiative by Purpose, the exhibition builds on last year’s campaign that brought into sharp focus the issue of heat stress among urban informal workers - construction workers, vendors, construction workers, street vendors, domestic workers, delivery staff, auto drivers, and lakhs of others who keep the city running.

In response to the looming public health crisis caused by rising temperatures and intense heat waves, a two-day event in Bengaluru confronted one of India’s most pressing urban challenges: Heat Stress, and its impact on informal sector workers, who struggle with limited access to shelter, cooling, water and sanitation.

Organised by People First Cities, an initiative by Purpose, and in a creative collaboration with the ATREE Heat Shelter Contest, Sweat & Concrete took place at the community Space Sabha, Bengaluru. The event was conducted in a largely bilingual format (Kannada and English), making it inclusive and participatory for visitors across demographics.

The exhibition was built around the unveiling of the prototype of  Neralu Heat Shelter (Neralu translated to ‘shade’ in Kannada), the winning design from a national contest run by ATREE to provide a tangible solution to the issue of heat stress. Designed by architects Sagar and Ankrtiya, the Neralu Heat Shelter was inspired by the makeshift shade structures used by street vendors and workers, offering a collapsible microclimate that provides relief from extreme heat. Visitors and informal workers from communities around the city were invited to gather around the shelter, engaging directly with its design and functionality. They were also encouraged to share their feedback for further nuancing of the design.

Speaking about this collaborative initiative with People First Cities, the architects said: “We are thrilled to partner with People First Cities on this and bring our design to life. We collaborated on this project a year ago, connecting on a shared belief that design can create real social impact. We are also grateful to the many individuals across communities who shared their lived realities with us, as this greatly shaped our understanding of the subject and guided the design process.” Sagar Kandal & Ankritya Diggavi.

Sweat & Concrete also showcased the five runners-up concepts from the ATREE Heat Shelter contest, and highlighted the experience of living through unrelenting heat through a multimedia exhibit. Visitors were also invited to take part in Scorched Shadows, an immersive performance art experience by local theatre troupe ‘Kahe Vidushak’, which included story-swaps and interactive ‘tableaus’ play with the attendees.

CFM RISE Program: A Vision For Next-Generation Commercial Engines

Launched in 2021, the RISE* Program accelerates the development of uncompromising new propulsion technologies that will pave the way for the next generation of aircraft. With cutting-edge technology and strong partnerships, GE Aerospace is helping create a future of flight that’s more fuel-efficient while meeting expectations for durability and reliability.

CFM International (a 50/50 joint venture between GE Aerospace and Safran Aircraft Engines) is leading the next revolution in propulsion technology with the RISE Program, which aims to improve fuel efficiency by more than 20% compared to engines today.

5 Quick Facts About the RISE Program

Open Fan Engine Architecture

At the heart of the RISE Program is the Open Fan engine architecture, which removes the traditional casing, allowing for a larger fan size with less drag to improve efficiency. It will also be equipped with carbon-fibre composite blades for weight reduction, strength, and durability. Leveraging supercomputing, RISE Program engineers are designing a fan that maximizes efficiency while minimizing noise.

Compatibility with Unblended Sustainable Aviation Fuel

The core is being designed for compatibility with next-generation fuels, including unblended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), as well as with hybrid electric systems. It also uses adaptive engine technologies for improved thermal efficiency and cooling to boost performance while allowing safe and efficient operation at every stage of a flight.

Extensive Global Testing

To date, the RISE Program has successfully completed more than 250 tests across research facilities worldwide. In 2024, over 300 hours of wind tunnel testing were conducted at ONERA — the French national aerospace research center — using a one-fifth scale model of the Open Fan by Safran Aircraft Engines. Meanwhile, endurance testing of high-pressure turbine (HPT) blades and nozzles was conducted earlier this year, with over 3,000 operational cycles completed.

Advancing the Science of Non-CO2 Emissions

Beyond CO2, GE Aerospace is also helping to advance the industry’s understanding of non-CO2 emissions while it develops next-generation combustion technology. GE Aerospace recently partnered with NASA to conduct groundbreaking contrail analysis tests, leveraging state-of-the-art Lidar technology to capture three-dimensional imagery.

Ground and Flight Tests this Decade

As part of the RISE Program’s push to revolutionize next-generation aircraft propulsion, CFM, in collaboration with Airbus, is preparing for an Open Fan Flight Test Demonstration to evaluate performance, safety, noise, and aerodynamics under real-world conditions. These efforts are key milestones in the development of disruptive engine technologies, which could potentially enter service in the latter half of the 2030s depending on airframer strategies.

Karnataka Governor Launches JGU’s Sustainability Report 2025 Showcasing Higher Education’s Role In Climate Leadership

O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) released its Sustainable Development Report (SDR) 2025 at the Bengaluru Sustainability Conclave on Tuesday, 3 June 2025. The report showcases the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainability across research, teaching, operations, and community initiatives. With a focus on real impact, JGU has strengthened its alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The release function was marked by the presence of Shri. Thawaar Chand Gehlot, Hon’ble Governor of Karnataka, who officially released the report as a Chief Guest at the Conclave.

Shri Thawaar Chand Gehlot, Hon’ble Governor of Karnataka, remarked, “I am delighted that O.P. Jindal Global University and RV University have come together to inaugurate the Bengaluru Sustainability Conference and launch the Sustainable Development Conclave (SDR) 2025. To achieve the SDG goals, multi-stakeholder cooperation is essential. These goals remain a primary focus, and we in the government have been working assiduously to achieve them at the grassroots level through programmes like Make in India, Swachh Bharat, and others in water, health, farmer support, and state initiatives. Bengaluru, known as India’s Silicon Valley and a centre of science and research, is facing many challenges and stress on its resources. It is important that knowledge sharing, cooperation, and information exchange help mitigate the challenges of climate change. The growing carbon footprint, pollution, deforestation, and other factors have led to a climate crisis, and it is imperative that we address these issues urgently. We need to inform and sensitize people about them. Our campaigns to save energy, water, and other resources are aimed at protecting the environment. O.P. Jindal Global University has been working determinedly towards environmental sustainability and protection, and this is a very laudable step. This report is timely and important for fulfilling our responsibility towards achieving the SDGs.”

In the past year, JGU has made significant progress in research contributions, with an increase in sustainability-related research output and global recognition through citations in major policy documents. Student-led initiatives, new sustainability-focused degree programs, and international collaborations further emphasize JGU’s holistic approach to responsible education. The university’s campus has become a hub for innovation, featuring improved water conservation efforts, a pioneering e-waste management partnership, and health-focused dining reforms. The efforts to reduce our carbon footprint have led to reduction in total emissions across Scope 1 and Scope 2 categories.

Professor (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, O.P. Jindal Global University, stated, “It is with great pride and purpose that I announce the release of the Sustainable Development Report 2025 of O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU). This report stands as a testament to our unwavering commitment to embedding sustainability at the heart of higher education. It captures the breadth of our efforts—from environmental stewardship and social impact to academic innovation and institutional accountability. As a global university, sustainability is not just a goal—it is a guiding principle that shapes our teaching, research, campus life, community engagement, and governance. This report offers a transparent, data-driven reflection of that journey.”

Dr. (H.C.) A. V. S. Murthy, Chancellor, RV University, said, “It is important to achieve the sustainable development goals by maximizing the impact of multi-stakeholder partnerships for sharing and cooperation. India, with its 1.4 million people, is a nation with vast potential for achieving the SDGs.  It is about transforming aspirations, mental realities especially for the most vulnerable. We have seen a growing recognition that no single entity, the government or the private sector, academia or social civil society, can solve complex development challenges. What we need today are partnerships that are inclusive, purpose-driven and built on shared ideas as a cornerstone of sustainable development. For instance, a developmental agency might support a university’s research in exchange for policy relevant insights. Or integrate cross-sector partnerships, where multiple entities combine their unique strengths to tackle a shared challenge. These partnerships demand careful planning, mutual respect and strong governance for systemic change. In these cases, the challenge will be complex and multi-dimensional, requiring adaptive thinking, innovation and deep negotiation between diverse perspectives.  Technology can be a strong ally here, enabling real time monitoring, transparent data sharing and participating feedback groups that give voice to any stakeholder. The world has finite resources but infinite possibilities. We need to ensure that no child is left without education, no women without community, and no village without opportunity”

The report underscores the importance of paying attention to how every initiative undertaken at the university can contribute to sustainability, climate action, or social impact, and recognizing the interconnectedness of these goals. Higher education institutions have a responsibility to serve as models for environmental stewardship, as much as any other organisation. JGU is integrating sustainability across academic and administrative units to inspire the next generation of global leaders, not just through research and teaching but our policies and processes as well.

Professor Padmanabha Ramanujam, Dean, Office of Academic Governance, JGU, added, “The Sustainable Development Report is a testament to O.P. Jindal Global University’s unwavering commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through inclusive, ethical, and forward-looking higher education. At JGU, we believe sustainability is a collective responsibility—woven into our governance, pedagogy, and institutional culture. This report reflects our vision for fostering responsible innovation and shaping leaders who are committed to building a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.”

The Bengaluru Sustainability Conclave also featured a panel discussion on “Advancing the Sustainable Development Goals: Maximising the impact of multi-stakeholder partnerships through knowledge sharing and cooperation”, bringing together senior leaders from various backgrounds and industries from across India. The panel was chaired by Professor (Dr) C. Raj Kumar, with distinguished speakers Ms. Bhawana Pingali, Founder, REVASTRA; Prof. (Dr.) Dwarika Prasad Uniyal, Vice Chancellor (in-charge), RV University; Ms. Jyotsna Belliappa, Founder & Director, BlueSky Sustainable Business; Ms. Megha Arora, Partner IndusLaw; Mr. Panduranga Acharya, General Counsel Zepto; Mr. Prashanth Sabeshan, Partner Dentons Link Legal; and Ms. Smitha Chandrashekaraiah, Legal Director HARMAN International.

In his concluding remarks on the report, Professor R. Sudarshan, Dean, Jindal School of Government & Public Policy, JGU, said, “The launch of the report speaks volumes about how democracy and the political process can transform a country as India has from being very hierarchical to a more inclusive nation. There is no scope for complacency in our goal to protect the environment. The SDG 2025 report helps inform and changes attitudes towards climate change especially amongst academia and students.”

In his address, Justice Michael D. Wilson, Hon’ble former Judge of the Supreme Court of Hawai’i, USA, spoke about how we are entering a climate hell and elaborated on the damage that climate change and extreme events have caused, bringing distress and destruction to his native state.

Looking forward, JGU is committed to deeper integration of sustainability in every aspect of university life. The University envisions an ecosystem where students have access to cutting-edge resources and targeted mentorship, to be able to expand their focus and contribute to large-scale global challenges through cross-sectoral partnerships.
