HOSMAT Multispecialty Hospitals Unveils Dr. Thomas Chandy’s Bust, New OPD Wing, Transforms Lives With Free Surgeries For 10 Children

  • On Founder’s Day, HOSMAT Multispecialty Hospitals pays tribute to Dr. Thomas Chandy with the inauguration of his bust and a new OPD wing on Magrath Road, while continuing his mission through 10 free life-changing surgeries and a Clean Bengaluru campaign.

HOSMAT Multispecialty Hospitals marked its Founder’s Day with a heartfelt tribute to its visionary founder, Dr. Thomas Chandy, through the inauguration of his commemorative bust and the launch of a new, state-of-the-art OPD wing on the 4th floor of HOSMAT Multispecialty Hospitals, Magrath Road.

The ceremony was graced by eminent guests including Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, Archbishop of Bangalore Diocese, Mr. N. A. Haris, MLA – Shanthinagar, and Olympian & Arjuna Awardee Ms. Nisha Millet.

The event celebrated not just the life of Dr. Chandy, but also his living legacy of compassion through the hospital’s flagship initiative, the “Make Me Walk” program, which continues to transform young lives. This year, 10 free corrective surgeries were performed for underprivileged children suffering from physical deformities, reaffirming HOSMAT’s motto — #YourLifeMatters.

Among them was Salman, a 15-year-old from Kolar Gold Fields, born with multiple deformities that made movement a challenge. While his parents, a farmer couple, had nearly lost hope, HOSMAT’s team intervened through its program and performed complex surgeries on his hands and legs — entirely free of cost. Today, Salman can stand and move independently, embodying the spirit of healing and hope.

Similarly, Jaanvi, a 3-year-old from rural Bellary who had endured three failed surgeries for clubfoot, finally found relief at HOSMAT. A successful corrective procedure helped her take her first confident steps — a moment of joy and gratitude for her daily-wage worker parents, who once thought recovery was impossible.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Anisha Chandy Eckardt, Managing Director of HOSMAT Multispecialty Hospitals, said: “My father believed that healthcare is not just about treating illness, but about restoring dignity. Every surgery under ‘Make Me Walk’, every patient we care for, and every community effort we support is a continuation of his dream — to heal with purpose. The new OPD wing represents our next step in that journey — expanding accessibility and care. As we look to the future, our goal is to bring healthcare closer to people through preventive and home-based services.”

Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado, Archbishop of Bangalore, fondly remembered Dr. Chandy: “Dr. Thomas Chandy will always be remembered as a human being truly dedicated to society. In a gathering of nearly 200 doctors, he was chosen as the Founder President of the Doctors’ Association — a testament to his leadership and warmth. Wherever he went, he brought life, music, and dance. He was a brilliant orthopaedic surgeon, a visionary leader, and a humanitarian whose spirit lives on through his children, his doctors, and his beloved HOSMAT.”

Mr. N. A. Haris, MLA – Shanthinagar, added: “Dr. Chandy built institutions rooted in compassion, not commerce. HOSMAT reflects his belief that healthcare is a service to humanity. His legacy continues through his children and his team — I’ve lost not just a great doctor but a true friend.”

Ms. Nisha Millet, Olympian, shared a personal memory: “When every other hospital suggested surgery for my shoulder, Dr. Chandy recommended only physiotherapy — and it worked like magic. He truly understood athletes and their needs. His empathy matched his expertise.”

The celebration concluded with the culmination of HOSMAT’s “Clean Bengaluru Campaign”, a week-long cleanliness drive in collaboration with BBMP, covering Magrath Road, Viveknagar, and Victoria Layout, a tribute to Dr. Chandy’s vision of a healthier, cleaner society.

Today, as HOSMAT evolves into a multispecialty institution, it continues to uphold its founder’s principles — from orthopaedics to preventive health and homecare for the elderly.

With India’s ageing population and rising chronic diseases, HOSMAT’s forward-looking initiatives aim to make healthcare accessible, affordable, and proactive.
