North Karnataka Origin Surgeon Operates Superstar Rajinikanth’s Brother in Bengaluru


Superstar Rajinikanth visited his brother Sathyanarayana Rao Gaikwad, who underwent a ‘bilateral knee replacement’ surgery at Apollo Hospitals Seshadripuram, Bengaluru. Sathyanarayana Rao Gaikwad, 77, had severe osteoarthritis in the knee and was unable to walk since a very long time.

“Satyanarayana is doing well now and is being declared fit to walk on the same day of the surgery,” said Dr Kiran Chouka, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Apollo Hospitals Seshadripuram, Bangalore.

“India is currently facing a knee ailments’ epidemic.  According to a recent study, more than 10  crore Indians suffer from knee-related problems like loss of cartilage, ACL tear (tear or sprain of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), a major knee ligament) and various types of age-related degenerative arthritis like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis among many others. As the number of such cases rises, incidences of joint replacement surgeries have also seen an upsurge in the past five years.  Osteoarthritis (OA) principally affecting the elderly, OA is the leading cause of disability in individuals older than 65 years and affects 70% to 90% of those older than 75 years. The most common form of arthritis, OA is a debilitating, degenerative disease of the articular cartilage and synovial fluid. Over the last decade there have been many studies looking at the impact of osteoarthritis on function and quality of life. Research has confirmed that knee and hip osteoarthritis are most adversely impactful on an individuals mobility, as well as their ability to perform routine daily activities such as walking in the supermarket, getting around the house, climbing stairs, and even getting in and out of a chair.’’ added Dr Kiran Chouka.
