VRSI And RSSDI Launch Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Guidelines Aimed At Preventing Diabetes-Related Vision Loss

* The guidelines are an initiative to combat diabetes related vision loss, which if detected on time, is preventable

With over 101 million people with diabetes in India, the country has emerged as the diabetes capital of the world. As a result, a simultaneous and sharp rise has been observed in the prevalence of diabetes-related preventable vision loss.  A diabetologist plays an important role in timely screening for diabetic retinopathy and referring to an ophthalmologist for its management. Vitreo Retinal Society of India (VRSI) and Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI) have collaborated to formulate first-of-its-kind Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Guidelines, which will help every physician and diabetologist in India to educate their patients regarding diabetic retinopathy.

Owing to lifestyle modifications, migration to cities, obesity, and stress, there has been an increase in the number of diabetes patients in the country, parallelly increasing the number of diabetes related vision loss cases. Type -2 diabetes is common amongst the working-age population, impacting their physical and mental health. This condition if not screened timely can become the leading cause of blindness in India, causing a huge economic burden. With a national prevalence of 12.5% of diabetic retinopathy and 4% of vision-threatening ‘Diabetic Retinopathy’, approximately 3 million Indians are at a risk of vision loss. This highlights the critical need for timely screening of every patient with diabetes to prevent an irreversible loss of vision, which goes undetected in its early stage and is thus aptly known as a 'silent thief of sight.'

This initiative aims to empower healthcare professionals—often the first point of contact for those living with diabetes—with the tools and knowledge necessary to promote early detection and intervention, ultimately reducing the risk of severe vision impairment and blindness caused due to diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy screening guidelines for Physicians in India: Position statement by VRSI and RSSDI were released at a conference in Delhi, with eminent healthcare professionals and industry body leaders in attendance. Dr. Sudha Chandrashekar (Former Executive Director, National Health Authority – Ministry of Health and Family Welfare), Dr. R. Kim (President, VRSI), Dr. Manisha Agarwal (Gen Secretary, VRSI), Dr. Rakesh Sahay (President, RSSDI), and Dr. Sanjay Agarwal (Secretary General, RSSDI) shared their insights during the session, outlining the status of diabetic retinopathy in India and the gaps being bridged by the established recommendations.

Table 1: Diabetic retinopathy screening guidelines for Physicians in India: position statement by the Vitreoretinal Society of India (VRSI) and the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI)

Dr. Sudha Chandrashekar, Former Executive Director, National Health Authority – Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, added, “To safeguard the vision of millions of Indians living with diabetes, diabetic retinopathy screening has been integrated into the government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme. By prioritizing early detection at a national level, this initiative aims to preserve eyesight and improve health outcomes across the country. Diabetic retinopathy screening is particularly beneficial for the beneficiaries of the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) scheme, helping to avoid higher costs in the management of advanced stages of DR and ensuring better health outcomes.”

Dr. R Kim, President, VRSI, commented, “We’re pleased to collectively unveil these guidelines and set a new standard for diabetic retinopathy screening in India. By encouraging collaboration between physicians, diabetologists, and ophthalmologists, we aim to promote better diabetes management and reduce the incidence of preventable vision loss across the nation.”

Highlighting the importance of diabetic retinopathy screening, Dr. Manisha Agarwal, Gen Secretary, VRSI, said, "Despite the increasing prevalence of diabetic retinopathy, limited awareness and the often asymptomatic nature of the condition result in a disappointingly low number of individuals with diabetes seeking eye screenings. This makes it imperative to raise awareness about vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy and the need for timely screening and management.”

" In India, the growing number of individuals living with diabetes highlights the importance of not only monitoring glucose levels but also undergoing regular screenings for other health complications associated with diabetes to maintain overall health. Diabetic retinopathy is one such complication that, if left untreated, can cause severe and often irreversible vision loss. These guidelines will play a key role in increasing awareness among general physicians and diabetologists about the critical need for timely diabetic retinopathy screening," stated Dr. Sanjay Agarwal, Secretary General, RSSDI.

Published in the renowned International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries, the guidelines serve as a comprehensive reckoner and mark a crucial milestone in India’s journey to advancing diabetes management and screening for Diabetic retinopathy effectively.

Indo-Australian Patient Safety Compassion Workshop Held At Manipal

Manipal College of Nursing (MCON), Manipal, in collaboration with Deakin University, organises a workshop on patient safety compassion.  Dr Stephane Bouchoucha, Associate Professor & Head of School, International Faculty of Health, / School of Nursing & Midwifery/ Institute of Health Transformation, Deakin Australia, says Patient Safety Compassion is the need of the hour in today’s patient safety concerns.

In Australia, the prevention of infections has primarily depended on limiting personal freedoms during health crises, including vaccination mandates and lockdowns. These band-aid solutions aim to preserve public health, which will benefit society by preventing the spread of illness. It also observed that "Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) faced challenges and were slow to react but stayed focused on keeping people safe." Amid misunderstandings, recommendations also changed over time. IPC guidelines have a detrimental effect on patients, families, and healthcare providers by making family-centred care challenging.

Because of the COVID-19 crisis, people's compassion fatigue has been severely impacted by care delivery and restriction sets. The challenges that society still faces were considered when talking about it.

When debating ethical problems, the challenges that society still faces are taken into consideration. In times of emergency or critical care settings where patient safety is of the utmost importance, the administration must be aware of techniques that can keep us at ease while providing care. These strategies include patient-centred communication, a comfortable environment, continuous feedback and improvement, an interprofessional approach to care, and a supportive attitude from healthcare professionals.

Dr Vikram Palimar, Professor in the Department of Forensic Medicine, KMC MAHE, Manipal and also the head of the Patient Safety & Sentinel events committee of Kasturba Hospital, highlighted the day-to-day patient safety concerns in India that need close attention. Risks in the workplace need innovative solutions. He emphasised documenting unusual incidents, preventing patients from injuries, using correct identifiers, minimising medication errors, using closed-loop communication, and following hospital standards and protocols can save lives. Fact-finding and fault findings create fear in reporting. A supportive, non-punitive culture will enhance safety and encourage reporting to reduce incidents of morbidity and mortality. Encouraging error reporting without fear and retribution, a non-blaming attitude, regular feedback, a collaborative problem-solving forum, continuous training & support, and data utilisation can guide improvements in the system. He said, “Safety isn’t just a policy; it’s our promise to quality care”.

Dr. Judith A. Noronha, Dean Manipal College of Nursing, reinforced the significance of prioritising patient safety as an integral part of quality care, underscoring the policy, "Get it right, make it safe.". Dr Elsa Sanatombi Devi, Professor MCON, MAHE Manipal, welcomed the delegates and the experts and engaged the learners with exciting learning linkages. Mr. Shreenidhi Joji, PhD scholar, ignited the participants with his collaborative learning skills. A total of 48 delegates took part in the workshop. This workshop aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, each of which plays a vital role in ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all. These SDGs collectively highlight the workshop’s broader impact beyond healthcare by enhancing education, improving work environments, and strengthening institutional frameworks. Together, they contribute to improving healthcare outcomes, reducing morbidity, and enhancing the overall quality of life, aligning with the global health agenda.

The facility leverages Britannia’s robust milk procurement and support program with 3000+ local farmers

Britannia Bel Foods, a leading Cheese player in India, today marked a significant milestone in its growth, nearly two years after being established as an ambitious joint venture. The company announces the inauguration of its Cheese factory in India, dedicated to the local production of Britannia The Laughing Cow products, reinforcing its commitment to serving the best quality products to Indian consumers made locally. Britannia has scaled up the milk procurement program within a few years to 70 Village-Level Bulk Milk Coolers installed within a 100 km radius from the factory, spanning 10 tehsils in the Pune and near districts. This initiative supports local farmers, ensures a sustainable supply chain, and reinforces Britannia's commitment to community and agricultural development.  Britannia's Milk Collection Centers have advanced testing capabilities, ensuring that raw milk quality is assessed across 31 quality parameters at site and 20 additional parameters at unloading before being accepted at the factory.

To support the local community of its 3000+ milk farmers, Britannia operates an integrated support program focused on three pillars of management, breeding and feeding of cattle. The program encapsulates enabling best farm practices such as door-to-door animal health camps, farmer training & breed training programmes, quality fodder seeds distribution and a transparent direct payment services to the farmer. The farmer program is integrated with Britannia’s village development and malnourishment programmes under the efforts of Sir Ness Wadia Foundation and Britannia Nutrition Foundation.

A new step with the inauguration of the factory with state-of-the-art facilities

The establishment of this factory is creating numerous job opportunities, significantly boosting local employment and contributing to the region's economic growth. Over the past few years, the Maharashtra state government has extended immense support for the Britannia Mega Food Factory at Ranjangaon recognizing it as an Ultra Mega project and providing Britannia with a customized incentive package. This has enabled facilities for manufacturing the entire product range of Britannia across biscuits, cake, rusk, croissant, salted snacks, wafers, dairy drinks & powders & Cheese. Further, the seamless approval cadence of the state government for plans, licenses, infrastructure, development, power and several other factors have greatly benefited this strategic investment.

The facility’s technology, including Pasteurizer, Bactofuge, and auto-standardization units, provides best-in-class Cheese experience to consumers. Cheddar, Mozzarella & Processed Cheese are being manufactured by using world-class equipment imported from well-known global leaders of equipment manufacturers. CĂ©cile BĂ©liot, CEO of Bel Group, said: “I am proud to celebrate with Britannia the start of a state-of-the-art cheese factory leveraging the Bel 160-years legacy of operation on cheese. Commenting on how Sep'24 performed, FADA Karnataka State Chairperson, Mr Dharma Teja G said, “September 24 saw a decline in overall retail sales, dropping by 10.11% YoY.  Except for 3W and Trac, which grew by 17.44% and 8.42% YoY respectively. Other categories such as 2W, PV and CV fell by 9.34%, 21.09%, and 12.23% YoY, respectively. Honda Cars India Introduces A New “Assured Buyback Program” During Its Great Honda Fest Delebration In Partnership With CARS24

Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL), a leading manufacturer of premium cars in India, has introduced an “Assured Buyback Program” in partnership with CARS24, India’s leading autotech platform. This unique programme has been introduced as part of The Great Honda Fest campaign, which aims to guarantee a future resale value for new Honda cars purchased, allowing buyers to have complete peace of mind.

As part of The Great Honda Fest’s triple bonanza benefits during October’24, customers can choose from various options, including cash discounts, maintenance packages, assured buyback programme, and stand a chance to win gold worth upto Rs 5 lakh. The newly introduced Assured Buyback Program allows buyers to celebrate their purchase today & drive confidently while ensuring their investment is secure for the future.

Commenting on the Assured Buyback Programme and the partnership, Mr. Kunal Behl, Vice President, Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd. said, “Honda vehicles are known for their outstanding reliability, quality and long-lasting performance which contribute to their strong resale value. Our collaboration with CARS24 to introduce Assured Buyback Programme underscores Honda’s commitment to delivering exceptional value and peace of mind, ensuring that buyers not only enjoy a world class driving experience but also a secure and rewarding resale when it’s time for an upgrade.”

Talking about the partnership, Mr. Ruchit Agarwal, Co-Founder and Chief Financial Officer of CARS24 added, “When I bought my first car, I remember the excitement of every drive, but I also remember that quiet worry: ‘Will I get a fair price when I sell?’ That’s why this program means so much to me. The Assured Buyback Program is designed to give car owners the peace of mind I wish I had. With Honda’s reputation for unmatched quality this program will allow customers to simply enjoy their new cars, knowing that when the time comes, we’ve already secured their next step. It’s about lifting that weight off their shoulders and letting them focus on what truly matters—the drive.”

Key Benefits of the Assured Buyback Program:

No Depreciation Anxiety: Customers no longer have to worry about how much their car will depreciate over time. The guaranteed resale value offers peace of mind from the moment they drive off the lot.

Financial Flexibility: The assured buyback offers the flexibility to plan financial decisions better, especially for those looking to time major life changes, like a new home purchase or another big investment.

New Car Upgrades: Encourages smoother upgrades to more advanced and new energy models over time, contributing to both personal savings and environmental benefits.

Resale Certainty Even in Down Markets: In economic downturns or market slowdowns, customers can count on the guaranteed value rather than relying on unpredictable market conditions.

No Hidden Fees or Surprise Costs: Clear, upfront terms ensure that customers won’t be hit with hidden fees or unexpected charges when it’s time to resell.

Low Stress for First-Time Car Buyers: For customers who may be purchasing their first car, the program removes the guesswork and complexity involved in future resale value, making the entire car-buying process smoother.

In today’s fluctuating market, many car buyers prioritize resale value when making a purchase. The newly introduced Assured Buyback Program directly addresses this concern, ensuring that customers have certainty from the moment they drive their new Honda off the lot.

The Assured Buyback Program is available at all CARS24 outlets and Honda dealerships across India. This festive season, secure the future of your Honda and enjoy the journey ahead with complete confidence.

The Luxury Group By Marriott International Reveals Culinary And Beverage Trends In The Future Of Food 2025 Report

The Luxury Group by Marriott International today released its new comprehensive report, The Future of Food 2025, which highlights the transformative power of the Asia Pacific region in shaping global culinary and dining trends. With insights from more than 30 top chefs, mixologists, and industry insiders from the region, the report identifies 10 macro trends influencing the food and dining industry and the region’s impact on global gastronomy.

With the Asia Pacific region at the epicenter of culinary tourism, commanding a remarkable 37.8% share of the global market in 2023, with a projected growth of USD 6.2 trillion by 2033*, this vibrant culinary landscape is powered by both tradition and innovative dining experiences, making it a magnet for food and drink enthusiasts from around the world.

“The Future of Food 2025 report highlights Asia Pacific's pivotal role in shaping global culinary landscapes," said Oriol Montal, Managing Director of Luxury for Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International. "With gastronomy having a significant influence on travel decisions, dining has become an essential component of the global tourism landscape. This report demonstrates our commitment to culinary excellence across all our Luxury Group brands. We will continue to evolve our gastronomy landscape alongside the F&B industry, providing our guests with dining experiences that highlight the region's rich heritage, flavors, and techniques."

Petr Raba, Vice President of Food & Beverage, Asia Pacific excluding China, Marriott International, added, "We're not just observing these trends; we are actively contributing to their creation and influence. We're investing in immersive food experiences, sustainable practices, and innovative technologies to enhance our restaurant and bar offerings in the region. By embracing these emerging trends, we're not only elevating our guests' dining experiences but also contributing to the evolution of the global culinary scene."

Key Trends Shaping The Future of Food

From Asia Pacific to the World

From the fusion of Japanese aesthetics into French cuisine, the rising influence of Korean flavours, to the innovative use of traditional spices and techniques from India and Mainland China reshaping Western norms, Asia Pacific is becoming a culinary export powerhouse. The return of diaspora chefs to their native countries infuses local scenes with international flair, showcasing native ingredients and revitalizing traditional recipes. This trend is further bolstered by a growing global appreciation for Asian hospitality and innovation, setting the stage for Asian cuisine to dominate global dining in the future.

Revival of forgotten ingredients and traditions

Amid rising environmental concerns, chefs have a deeper appreciation for labor-intensive traditions and forgotten ingredients, integral to Asia Pacific heritage. Across the region, chefs are not only preserving but innovating within their culinary traditions, from nose-to-tail cooking to artisanal jang production, making significant contributions to both their cultural heritage and global sustainability efforts.

Fine dining redefined: Hyperlocal hype and Superfine dining

Dining outlets are celebrating lesser-known regional cuisines, offering culturally enriching and gastronomically satisfying dining adventures. Fine dining establishments are pivoting towards exclusivity by elevating prices, limiting covers, and introducing membership-based access, creating unparalleled value for guests through exceptional experiences. Additionally, the emphasis on quality over quantity and shorter, faster, more relaxed dining experience in intimate settings is becoming prominent.

Wellness on the plate

The wellness revolution is influencing food choices. While anti-aging foods that support hormone balance and enhance dopamine levels gain popularity, longevity is the new luxury. Food is regarded as medicine, with restaurants shifting to offering nutritious, chef-curated menus that prioritize fresh, whole ingredients and transparent sourcing. Hyper-personalized diets powered by AI can provide meal recommendations based on individual physiological and psychological states.

Emerging Culinary Destinations

As infrastructure and digital connectivity improve, new hotspots for culinary tourism are emerging, solidifying the region's status as a global center for cultural and culinary excellence. The report identifies the diverse and vibrant food cultures in Bali, Busan, Ho Chi Minh City, Jeju, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Mumbai, Niseko, Shanghai, and Tasmania. They are redefining local dining scenes and setting new standards in global gastronomy with unique, hyperlocal dining experiences that celebrate indigenous ingredients and traditional cooking techniques.

Other trends identified in the report

Conscious Cuisine: Sustainability efforts include regenerative farming, addressing the water crisis, and digitizing the supply chain are seen to enhance food security and waste reduction.

Farm-to-Future: The integration of sustainable practices from biodynamic farming, plant-centric dining to upcycled ingredients are driving incremental improvements, ensuring that our future generations can continue to enjoy diverse cuisines.

Pour it Forward: Innovations in beverages, including craft cocktails and non-alcoholic options alongside the experience-driven spaces, are redefining bar experiences.

High-Tech, High-Touch: Technology enhances the dining experience without diminishing the personal touch that is central to hospitality.

Sensory Dining and Sustainable Spaces: Restaurants are becoming arenas for multisensory experiences integrated with technology that are both enjoyable and environmentally conscious.

Team '24 Europe: Atlassian Rovo Now Generally Available, New AI Capabilities, And A Glowup For Jira

During its Team '24 Europe conference, Atlassian, a leading provider of team collaboration and productivity software, announced the general availability of Rovo, an AI-powered tool that enables teams to unlock organizational knowledge at scale, less than six months after its introduction.

It was announced alongside a host of new AI capabilities across its product suite, empowering teams to unlock greater levels of productivity and collaboration. Atlassian also unveiled new features and a new look for its flagship product Jira that make it easier, more flexible, and powerful for all types of work.

Mike Cannon-Brookes, CEO and co-founder, Atlassian said, "Rovo is one of the most ambitious and important products we’ve ever built. I’m thrilled we can get it into our customers’ hands just five months after we first announced it in Las Vegas.

“Whether you’re a dev team building the next big thing, a marketing team creating your next big campaign, or a service agent helping your customers solve a really big problem, AI is going to transform the way your work gets done. It’s a huge opportunity for us, and most importantly, for our customers."

Rovo: Unlocking organizational knowledge at scale

Powered by generative AI and the teamwork graph, Rovo seamlessly integrates into the Atlassian platform, and helps speed up work by making it easier to access the information teams need. Teams are already saving 1-2 hours of time per week on average, with 75% of beta users saying Rovo helps them get work done faster and 80% say Rovo helps them find the right information at the right time.

With the newly announced Rovo Search Connectors, Rovo Data Center Connectors, and the Rovo Browser Extension, these teamwork graphs become even richer as they get access to more sources. The search connectors also provide more knowledge to Rovo Chat, helping teams get the answers they need without switching tabs. Teams globally are pulling Rovo Agents into workflows to get better outcomes, while simultaneously saving hours or even days.

AI-powered innovation across the Atlassian suite

To improve collaboration and empower teams, Atlassian infused AI into all its products under the Atlassian Intelligence umbrella. The newest in-product AI features help customers reduce friction for developers, promote better collaboration across all teams, and accelerate service delivery and incident management. The key highlights include:

Jira: The new AI capabilities automatically break down work items, generate tickets, and streamline project management.

Jira Service Management: The AI-powered agents now assist with incident management, resource allocation, and post-incident reviews.

Development Tools: AI assists developers with code generation, analysis, and pull request reviews, boosting velocity and code quality.

A refreshed Jira for all teams

Earlier this year, Atlassian announced the next evolution of Jira - a shared place for every team to align on goals and priorities, track and collaborate on work, and get the insights they need to build something incredible, together.

Today at Team 24 Europe, Atlassian shared a refreshed and improved Jira experience to empower all teams to collaborate effectively and achieve ambitious goals. Now, Jira is bringing more flexibility to support any team's work style, through a new customizable sidebar that simplifies navigation and brings AI-powered search front and center. There are also new background colors, images, and card covers to take personalization even further.

To better reflect Jira's expanded user base to all teams, issues will no longer be the default name in Jira and teams can choose what to call their work (whether it’s “task” or “launch” or “issue”). Teams can also create custom project templates with pre-configured workflows, automations, permissions, and more, to scale their ways of working while remaining consistent.

Dozee Shravan - AI-Powered Remote Parent Health Monitoring Service Launched For NRIs

* Enabling NRIs to remotely monitor their parents' health with real-time alerts for early detection of any critical health deterioration

Dozee, India’s Health AI leader, has unveiled Dozee Shravan, a clinical-grade AI-powered Remote Parent Monitoring (RPM) service. Monitoring a parent’s health while living overseas is a significant concern for the Indian diaspora. Dozee Shravan now enables families abroad to regularly track their parents' health in India. Dozee’s AI-powered, contactless remote health monitoring technology is designed for seamless use by the elderly. The health data is securely shared with both families and healthcare providers. Dozee’s continuous health monitoring and real-time alerts help detect subtle deviations in vital parameters, ensuring timely medical intervention. As India’s No. 1 Remote Patient Monitoring company, Dozee is trusted by over 280 leading hospitals across the country.

For millions of NRIs, distance from ageing parents in India poses critical health management challenges. Existing support systems—occasional check-ins, help from relatives and neighbours, and limited telemedicine—offer limited reassurance and often fail during emergencies. The lack of effective early detection mechanisms leads to poor health outcomes, as manageable conditions are overlooked until it’s too late. Currently available solutions frequently fall short; many elderly individuals find them uncomfortable or forget to use, charge, or maintain them. Real-time, continuous data monitoring and alerting is another gap that must be addressed. This underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive, clinically proven, real-time monitoring solution that is accurate, dependable, and user-friendly—empowering families to care for their loved ones from afar while adhering to international standards of data security and privacy.

Dozee’s Shravan addresses this gap by offering continuous, contactless monitoring of vital signs such as heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, and sleep patterns. Built on AI-powered Ballistocardiography, the system uses advanced AI algorithms to analyze biomarkers and provide timely alerts for any deviations, reducing the risk of health emergencies and enabling timely medical intervention. The technology is US FDA-cleared and adheres to international standards for data privacy. Health data can be accessed via a user-friendly mobile app, ensuring that NRIs stay connected to their parents’ health 24/7, regardless of distance.

Already a trusted partner of more than 280 hospitals across India, the USA, and Africa, Dozee has emerged as a beacon of ‘Made in India’ Health AI, delivering global impact.
