Joint Research By Scientists With KMC, MAHE, Manipal Discovers New Mutation Involving Zinc Transport That Causes Rare Brain Disease

* The research was done in collaboration with University of Pittsburgh

A team of researchers led by Dr. Anju Shukla from the Kasturba Medical College, MAHE, Manipal and Dr. Quasar Padiath at the University of Pittsburgh have discovered a new gene mutation that causes hypomyelinating leukodystrophy which is a type of neurological disorder.

The new gene, TMEM163, encodes a protein that transports Zinc, an essential dietary micronutrient, out of cells. This is the first time that a mutation in a zinc transporter gene has been definitively linked to the development of any brain disorder and has the potential to provide insights into the role of zinc in normal brain development, injury and disease.

For rare diseases like hypomyelinating leukodystrophies, finding such cases was only possible by tapping a network of scientific and clinical collaborators from all over the world. In this study, the first patient sample came from Dr. Shukla in Manipal. Enquiries to other groups in the US and the Netherlands identified additional families that also carried mutations in the same gene.

A series of in-depth lab studies showed that the TMEM163 mutations impair the transporter’s ability to effectively shunt zinc from inside the cell, causing reduced production of proteins responsible for synthesis and maintenance of myelin and increasing cell death.

Speaking about the efforts of the researchers Lt. Gen. (Dr) M.D Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education said “This discovery is remarkable and has the potential to help in development of new treatments for neurological conditions. We admire the efforts of the scientists at KMC and University of Pittsburgh. This work is published in the highly reputed journal Brain, which publishes landmark papers in clinical neurology and translational neuroscience since 1878 by Oxford University Press. This research is also an important milestone in the ongoing MoU signed between the two Universities this year”

Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Dr. Sharath Rao said “The department at Kasturba Medical College has been doing some outstanding work in the field of genetic disorders in children. We congratulate them and wish them all the success. We hope to do more such fruitful collaborations with the University of Pittsburgh”

Speaking about this new discovery, Dr. Anju Shukla Professor and Incharge Head, Department of Medical Genetics, KMC said "This discovery is very momentous as myelin disorders are one of the core research focuses of our team. Also, discovering a new gene responsible for causing a disease is always exciting, that feeling never gets old”

Dr Quasar Padiath , Associate Professor, Dept. of Human Genetics, University of Pittsburgh said “Finding out that a zinc transporter is really important for proper myelin development could have many clinical implications and offer new ways of treating other related neurological conditions”

Ms. Michelle Rosario and Dr. Guillermo Rodriguez Bey were the co-lead authors of the study. Other authors of the study include Bruce Nmezi, Fang Liu, Talia Oranburg,  Ana S. A. Cohen, Keith A. Coffman, Maya R. Brown, Kirill Kiselyov, Quinten Waisfisz, Myrthe T. Flohil, Shahyan Siddiqui, Jill A. Rosenfeld, Alejandro Iglesias, Katta Mohan Girisha, Nicole I. Wolf, Quasar S Padiath and Anju Shukla.

It Will Be A Great Fun For Fans To See Legends In Action, Feels Gujarat Giants Coach Venkatesh Prasad

Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad believes the Legends League Cricket will provide an exciting opportunity for Indian cricket fans to witness the cricketing greats in action as the second season of the league kick-starts at the Eden Gardens Stadium in Kolkata today.

“This league is taking cricket to different parts of the country like Jodhpur and Lucknow. People will get to see some legends playing in front of their eyes. It will be great fun for the spectators as they might not have seen these greats of the game playing live before,” Prasad said.

Prasad has been appointed as the coach of Gujarat Giants, which is owned by Adani Sportsline. The team is led by one of India’s best opening batsmen of all time, Virender Sehwag and consists of top names from the world including six-hitter Chris Gayle, Richard Levi, Daniel Vettori, Kevin O’Brien and Ajantha Mendis.

The second season of Legends League Cricket will feature cricket stars from 10 countries. A four-franchise league will be played in Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Cuttack and Jodhpur with the final scheduled on October 5.

The 53-year-old cricketer felt the league also offers an excellent opportunity for cricketing stars to enjoy the game even after retiring from international cricket.

“It’s great opportunity for the players. Legends League Cricket is a good concept. Earlier retired cricketers only had the option of coaching or commentary but now with this league even after having stopped playing international cricket they can come back and play Legends League Cricket,” he said.

Prasad further said it’s tough to pick one team with all the sides equally balanced but added that he would love to see Gujarat Giants to go in the final and win the inaugural league just like how India won the 2007 T20I World Cup.

“We do have a couple of players in our team like Sehwag and Joginder Sharma, who were part of the Indian team that lifted the T20I World Cup in 2007.”

Sehwag’s Gujarat Giants will begin their campaign against Gautam Gambhir’s India Capitals in the league opener in Kolkata on September 17. Manipal Tigers and Bhilwara Kings are the other two teams taking part in the league.

The announcement was made in the presence of Mr. T Harish Rao, Minister of Finance, Health, Medical, and Family Welfare, State of Telangana; Mr. Jasdeep Singh, Group CEO of CARE Hospitals; Dr Nikhil Mathur, Group Chief of Medical Services, Dr. Manjula Anagani, Padmashree awardee, Clinical Director and HOD of CARE Vatsalya Woman & Child Institute; and Mansi Wadhwa Rao, Head of Growth Programs, Medtronic India.

The milestone procedure was performed by the expert clinical team of CARE Hospitals, led by Dr. Manjula Anagani, at the group’s flagship facility located at Banjara Hills.  The patient, a 46-year-old woman, was suffering from prolonged Adenomyosis, a condition that causes the uterus to thicken and enlarge. She underwent a robotic-assisted total hysterectomy procedure where the affected uterus was removed using the HugoTM RAS system. CARE becomes the first hospital in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to install this new robotic-assisted surgery system from Medtronic.

Quoted by Mr. T Harish Rao, Minister of Finance, Medical, Health and Family Welfare, Telangana, said, “Investments in technology enabled healthcare solutions is vital to ensure quality patient care at affordable costs. High quality equipment like robotic system helps improves accuracy, reduces hospitals stay, fasten patient’s recovery.”

Mr. Jasdeep Singh, Group CEO, CARE Hospitals said, “CARE Hospitals has always been at the forefront of providing technology and clinical expertise enabled healthcare solutions to the patient community in both metro and non-metro cities. The introduction of the all-new Hugo™ RAS system from Medtronic is a testament to our pioneering initiatives and perfectly complements the continued efforts of our surgeons in delivering the high-quality care to our patients.”

Talking about the surgery, Dr. Manjula Anagani said, “Utilizing the new RAS system from Medtronic for hysterectomy, which was APAC’s first gynecological procedure, is a testimony to our dedication to provide high-end clinical care. It is a proud moment for all our teams, and we look forward to using this innovative robotic system to expand access to the powerful benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients.”

“We’re proud to celebrate this exciting milestone with CARE Hospitals,” said Mansi Wadhwa Rao, Head of Growth Programs, Medtronic India. “These first cases with the Hugo™ RAS system are ushering in a new era of robotic-assisted surgery in India and around the globe. That is made possible by our partnership with the CARE Hospital team and our shared vision for patient care and the future of surgery.”

Elaborating about the Advanced Robotic program, Dr. Nikhil Mathur, Group Chief of Medical Services said” This landmark surgery will open up new opportunities for our team of world-class surgeons to further use the Hugo™ RAS system in other clinical specialties. We look forward to using this innovative robotic system to expand access to the powerful benefits of minimally invasive surgery to more patients looking for treatment under General Surgery, Urology, Gynecology and more.”

The HugoTM RAS system is a modular, multi-quadrant platform designed for a broad range of soft-tissue procedures. It combines wristed instruments, 3D visualization, and Touch Surgery™ Enterprise, a cloud-based surgical video capture and management solution, with dedicated support teams specializing in robotics program optimization, service, and training. It is designed to bring the benefits of minimally invasive surgery —fewer complications, smaller scars, shorter hospital stays, and a faster return to normal activities1–3,† — to more patient around the world. And, in doing so, help address global inequities in access to care.

Engineers Set To Shape A New Era of Frontier Technologies Including AI And Web3: CoinSwitch CEO

Indian engineers and product builders have a rich history of simplifying complex technologies for common users. This is the Indian school of product building.

We can see this theme in multiple industries: The ISRO engineers have built a homegrown space industry of great utility to the common person cost-efficiently; builders of Aadhaar leveraged complex technologies like biometric authentication to simplify pain problems like identity verification. UPI made peer-to-peer and peer-to-merchant payments so easy and seamless.

Today, a new generation of cutting-edge technologies such as AI and Web3 is upon us. While these frontier technologies are evolving rapidly in the West, I firmly believe that technologies such as Web3 can truly reach its potential if they go through the Indian rigour of simplifying the complexities.

India’s unmatched talent density, internet adoption, and public digital infrastructure place us in a sweet spot to lead this technology revolution.

Over the next decade, I see Indian engineers and product builders simplifying Web3 and shaping it to solve unique user problems. As its real-world utility rises, so are the solutions to many problem statements solved by developers with an engineering background. What we do today will be foundational to the new internet. Hopefully, tomorrow’s Amazon and Google will be built in India.

Emirates And United Expand Market Presence Through New Agreement

* Emirates customers to connect on United to nearly 200 new cities in the Americas, through Chicago, San Francisco and Houston

* United to launch new nonstop flights between New York/Newark and Dubai in March 2023; connecting customers through Dubai to more than 100 new destinations on Emirates and flydubai

Emirates and United announced a historic commercial agreement today that will enhance each airline’s network and give their customers easier access to hundreds of new destinations* within the United States and around the world.

From November, Emirates customers flying into Chicago, San Francisco, and Houston - three of the biggest business hubs in the U.S – will be able to easily connect onto United flights to and from nearly 200 cities across the Americas on a single ticket.

At the eight other U.S. airports served by Emirates – Boston, Dallas, LA, Miami, JFK, Orlando, Seattle and Washington DC – both airlines will have an interline arrangement in place.

United will launch a new direct flight between Newark and Dubai starting in March 2023 – from there, customers will be able to travel on Emirates or its sister airline flydubai to more than 100 cities. Tickets for United’s new Dubai flight are now on sale.

Emirates and United announced their agreement today at a ceremonial event at Dulles International Airport, hosted by United CEO Scott Kirby and Emirates President Sir Tim Clark, featuring United and Emirates Boeing 777-300ER aircraft and flight crews from each carrier.

Sir Tim Clark, President Emirates Airline said: “Two of the biggest, and best-known airlines in the world are joining hands to fly people better to more places, at a time when travel demand is rebounding with a vengeance. It’s a significant partnership that will unlock tremendous consumer benefit and bring the United Arab Emirates and the United States even closer. We welcome United’s return to Dubai next year, where our hub Dubai essentially becomes a gateway for United to reach Asia, Africa and the Middle East via the combined network of Emirates and flydubai. We look forward to developing our partnership with United for the long term.”

Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines said: “This agreement unites two iconic, flag carrier airlines who share a common commitment to creating the best customer experience in the skies. United’s new flight to Dubai and our complementary networks will make global travel easier for millions of our customers, helping boost local economies and strengthen cultural ties. This is a proud moment for both United and Emirates employees, and I look forward to our journey together.”

Customers of both airlines can soon book these connecting flights on a single ticket – making check-in and luggage transfer faster and easier. For example – travelers will be able to visit United.com or use the United app to book a flight from New York/Newark to Karachi, Pakistan or go to Emirates.com to book a flight from Dubai to Atlanta or Honolulu.

This agreement will also give the loyalty program members of both airlines more opportunities for more rewards: Emirates Skywards members can soon earn miles when they travel on United operated flights, and United Mileage Plus members flying on United’s New York/Newark to Dubai flight will be able to earn and redeem miles when connecting beyond on Emirates and flydubai.

Eligible customers travelling on codeshare flights will also soon enjoy access to Emirates and United lounges. More details on frequent flyer awards and lounge sharing benefits will be communicated in the coming weeks.

Both airlines have recently announced significant investments in the customer experience. Emirates will retrofit more than 120 aircraft as part of a $2 billion effort that includes elevated meal choices, a brand-new vegan menu, a ‘cinema in the sky’ experience, cabin interior upgrades, and sustainable choices. At United, the airline will add 500 new Boeing and Airbus aircraft to its fleet with a focus on a new signature interior that includes seat-back screens in every seat, larger overhead bins, Bluetooth connectivity throughout, and the industry’s fastest available in-flight WiFi.

* Codeshare activities and United’s new flight to Dubai are subject to government approvals.

Kohli Recalls Childhood Memories With Cool Street Cricket Slangs

Street cricket has been an integral part of almost everyone’s childhood, especially if you are born in a cricket-crazy nation like India.

On Thursday, star India cricketer Virat Kohli walked down memory lane and recalled funny street cricket slangs used during his childhood in a video uploaded by him and sportswear brand PUMA on its social media platforms.

A video, titled Do You Know Your Cricket Slang put the spotlight on Kohli as the batting icon explained the meanings of popular local slangs used in Indian street cricket such as ‘Batta’ and ‘Baby Over’.

Kohli couldn’t hold back the laughter as he narrated the instances in response to local cricket terms. “Batta is a desi and rugged word for chucking,” Kohli said as part of his funny response to the term as he spent some light moments off-the-field in a short fun video clip.

Batta is a commonly used word in Indian street cricket where a bowler might chuck the ball.

The 33-year-old batting legend is also known for his fun and jovial side. The amusing video clip, organised by PUMA, witnessed the passionate cricketer’s off-the-field personality. Cricket is full of offbeat terms and expressions and a successful player ought to know his game-glossary well.

Kohli has, undoubtedly, performed exceedingly well over the last few weeks, slamming his much-awaited 71st century as well as two half-centuries to conclude tournament as the second highest run-getter.

PUMA shares a close association with Kohli since 2017 and collaborates with him on brand one8. The German sportswear brand is also the official kit partner of IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore with Kohli as a key player in the team.

Godrej Körber Automates India’s Cold Chain Storage Sector; Introduces Advanced AS/RS Technologies

~ Godrej Körber targets revenue contribution of 20% from the cold chain sector by FY25.

~ The business was present at the IDF World Dairy Summit hosted by India after 48 years in Greater Noida.

Godrej Körber, a joint venture company between Godrej & Boyce and Körber Supply Chain, a German company, is driving warehouse automation transformation for the Indian Cold Chain sector in India through differentiated automation solutions. Godrej Körber is steering for 20% contribution in revenue from India’s cold chain sector by introducing highly advanced high density AS/RS systems in FY23.

Cold storage sector encounter challenges that other ‘dry’ warehouses do not face. The higher cost of operations in the cold storages make it critically important that the space must be utilized in the best optimal manner. In India, the dairy or cold chain industry has not evolved in terms of intralogistics automation as companies ignore the benefits of modern cold storage design which also includes a high density storage system apart from advanced refrigeration technology. Aside from needing to pay the labour working in cold storage more than in a dry environment, there are also major concerns such as attrition and difficulty recruiting individuals to work in freezing warehouses. Automation technologies such as ASRS systems, Conveyors, and Layer Picker solutions can guarantee faster delivery, allowing for less footprint and maximised space utilisation in the facilities.

Godrej Körber is expecting 18% - 20% growth in the next 5 years as it has witnessed a major shift happening towards the adoption of automation in the supply chain after the pandemic and expects this trend to continue. Due to the growth of the manufacturing sector, development of organised 3PLs, Pharma, retail, e-commerce, and food service businesses, as well as shifting consumption patterns, the government is encouraging companies to invest into cold chain and cold storage facilities. Considering this, Godrej Körber is focussing on bulk handling in the automation industry, for leading private players as well as public-private partnership projects.

Suunil Dabral, Senior Vice President & Business Head, Godrej Körber stated, “An automated cold storage facility's purpose is to expedite procedures and increase safety for both staff and commodities. Godrej Körber aims to bring this transformation to India’s cold storage facilities by providing special high density storage automation solutions, including stacker cranes and shuttle based AS/RS solutions that let you fully control the storage of all palletized commodities without the need for manual handling. By integrating advanced technology and innovation, we aspire to tackle supply chain complexity across sectors and automate a large number of the cold chain warehouses in India.”

To further address the growing segment of Cold Chain storage, Godrej Körber exceeded order intake targets with order books full in FY22 and dominating an overall market size worth 4000 Crores owing to its successful coalition with global player Körber Supply Chain. Godrej Körber attended the IDF World Dairy Summit, which was held in Greater Noida for the first time in 48 years.

Today's announcement marks the availability of Cloudinfinit FinOps, powered by Aquila Clouds. This technology-leading FinOps platform provides cloud asset management, performance, and cost trend analysis, cloud cost optimization and automation, budget control, chargeback, security and compliance management, and more.
